I have been a loyal customer of Brookside Optometric in Stockton, CA since 2013, which is why I was disappointed by my experience today, April 22, 2026, around 3:42 PM. I stopped by the office to see if I could reschedule my upcoming follow-up appointment with Dr. Linda Hsu on May 28, 2026. For context, I saw Dr. Hsu on March 28, 2026, and during my exam I mentioned that I was seeing shadows on the letters during eye sight testing. She advised me to see an ophthalmologist to determine whether I may have cataracts. Because of this, I wanted to discuss my follow-up appointment and make sure I understood the next steps. Unfortunately, the front desk clerk, Brianna, was argumentative at times, did not seem to listen to my concerns, and repeatedly provided information that did not address the reason for my visit. I respectfully asked several times if she could confirm the details with Dr. Hsu so my concerns could be properly understood. Brianna stated that she relayed the message to Dr. Hsu while I waited in the lobby for approximately 45 minutes. At around 4:32 PM, Brianna told me that Dr. Hsu likely would not have time to see me because she was still with another patient. This left me wondering whether my concerns had actually been communicated to Dr. Hsu while I was waiting. As a long-time customer, I found this interaction disappointing due to the poor communication, lack of attentiveness, and lack of hospitality shown to a patient with legitimate concerns about their vision. I have been a patient with Brookside Optometric Group for many years and my experiences had always been positive until recently. Last week, I called their office to schedule an appointment for new glasses and to order a year's supply of contact lenses while my prescription was still valid. During that call, the staff member scheduled my appointment for next week and told me that someone would call me shortly to place the contact lens order. Five days later, I had not received a call, so I contacted the office again. I explained that I was still waiting for someone to call me so I could place my contact lens order. A different staff member informed me that there were no notes indicating that I had requested contacts, apologized for the oversight, and assured me that someone would call me later that day to place the order. I agreed and waited for the call. Later today, another staff member called. I explained that I wanted to place an order for a year's supply of contacts and then use my insurance for glasses during my appointment next week. At that point, she informed me that my contact lens prescription had expired 4 days earlier. I explained that I had called the office before the prescription expired specifically to place this order. She said she would check with the doctor (Dr. Sohail Din Akram) to see if the prescription could be extended. When she returned, she told me the doctor (Dr. Sohail Din Akram) declined and cited California Business and Professions Code §2541.2, stating that contact lens prescriptions must be valid for at least one year and no more than two years. Ironically, that statute actually means the doctor (Dr. Sohail Din Akram) had the discretion to issue a prescription for up to two years, especially considering that my prescription has remained the same for the past 3 to 4 years. Unfortunately, no one took responsibility for the staff oversight, even though I had called before the prescription expired to place my order. I did my part by contacting the office in advance, but the staff stated there were no notes from the original call. This situation was very frustrating because the issue could have easily been avoided if the original request had simply been documented. Based on this experience, I would recommend considering other optometrists who have better internal communication and accountability within their staff. If you have Dr. Sohail Din Akram, I'd recommend switching to a new doctor. Before deciding to go here, please read the other negative reviews. You will notice a pattern. I can almost guarantee that the owners or management will not actually resolve the issue. Most likely you will simply get a response asking you to contact their office again, which only leads to more runaround. If they truly cared about their patients, someone from management would reach out directly to resolve problems instead of posting generic responses. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case here. In my experience, it feels like once there is an issue, they are not interested in taking responsibility or making things right. If you are looking for an optometrist that values accountability and customer care, I recommend going elsewhere. read more

I've been going here for over 20+ years and It's gotten to the point I am just going to get my prescription and change my families eye dr. Shouldn't be this difficult to order contacts. This is an updated review of this office speaking as a patient there for over 25 years: since this practice was sold, I have observed and endured an erosion in services. The deterioration is principally felt within the office functions making "routine" calls, contact and requests near to fully impossible. My experience most recently, paraphrased: Following nearly two weeks of calling the office (so called "assisted by AI) in excess of 20 times, I was able to reach a "human" twice. I left messages including for the office manager that were ignored or lost. It pains me to say that no matter how much over whelming confidence I have had in my ophthalmologist for over 25 years, I am searching for a new provider and an office that actually assists a patient with scheduling, billing and office needs. read more

I have been a patient for 13-15 years. I love Dr. Scheer, she is the best and very thorough! I also really like that it's a one-stop shop. I get my yearly exam, select my new pair of glasses and stock up on my yearly supply of contacts all at once. Their inventory of glasses is well stocked with a variety of brands. The staff is so nice and helpful. I've gone in for adjustments on my glasses without an appointment and they are always welcoming & happy to help. Also, if you are like me and get a new pair of prescription glasses yearly, the Vallejo Executive Lions Club collects "old eye glasses" for Lions in Sight. They have a drop box located on the billing dept counter where you can donate your glasses. My prescription changes yearly so I would rather donate than have them collect dust. Lions In Sight is a Recycling Center ( for eye glasses) for the Western U.S. The eye glasses are then provided to children and the poor in undeveloped countries. I've been a patient here for many years and love all the doctors I've interacted with. Even after moving away from Stockton, I still come here for my eye needs because of my amazing eye doctor. My review is for the outside lab that they work with for frame repairs and for the office dropping the ball on my frames by not following up with the lab in a timely manner. I squished my glasses during a nap, a first for me in over 20 years of wearing glasses. They were unable to adjust the frames and the gal recommended that I use my 1 time warranty for frame repair. I was quoted 3-4 weeks bc they send them to a lab. In the meantime, I wore my previous pair. At week 3, I called to find out the status and was told they were showing "in process" and to wait after week 4. After week 4, I called and they still showed in process and would find out from the optician what was going on. I got a call back a couple days later letting me know that the lab broke the frames and that they needed to be sent a new pair and that it would be another 1-2 weeks. I asked when did you find this out? And the lady said they were just informed. So the lab kept this information to themselves for weeks and didn't bother to inform the office about it. It was only until I called the office and they called the lab did this come to be known. After 2 weeks, I called again and still no glasses. During this time the lab sent the office lenses not assembled into the frame, ok but when they tried to put them in they were incorrect sized lenses, then lenses but no transitions. Just too many errors. After 7 weeks, I called again and this time asked to speak with the manager because at this point it was getting ridiculous. I was told I could come get the glasses they had received in the meantime so I could at least wear the proper prescription but they weren't transition. I agreed and was also given a few pairs of contact lenses. Eventually, after 9 WEEKS I was informed they were ready for pick up. I wore contacts this day as I was going to a special event afterwards. I thought we'd be doing a 1:1 swap, I give them their glasses back and they give me the new ones. Actually the gal took my glasses to the back, popped out my frames and popped in the new ones with transition. I tried on the glasses, girl adjusted them, gave me the "old" lenses, I put them in my purse and I left. Remember I am wearing contacts. As I was leaving the parking lot with my husband, he asked me, "are you suure they have the transitions?" He got me thinking since there were many things wrong leading up to this. I took the glasses out of the case and let the sun hit them and only 1 of the 2 LENSES TRANSITIONED. I would have been looking like a pirate. Lol. Thankfully the gal gave me the "old lenses" and one of them transitioned so she got mixed up when she was swapping them. Ok she got mixed up but I'm unsure why she didn't check before giving them to me. I went back in and was helped by someone else who informed me that the gal was new and she shouldn't have given me the old lenses to keep. This new gal did the swap in the back and brought a flash light and did the test in front of me so I could see that they indeed had the transitions now. The lab they work with is disorganized and the office could've done a better job with following up after week 3. Instead of taking 3-4 weeks, it took 9 weeks. Keep that in mind if you choose to have frames repaired here. I'm now more careful with my glasses since I don't want to go through this process again. read more

I've been a patient for years...before Bob and Rosemary had kids. I've always been pleased with the entire experience. However this past year or less it's been impossible to get a person on the phone. Had to leave 3-4 messages before I got a call back. Went to pick up glasses and took too long. No fitting just picking up. I asked about changes, especially phone system. I was told they are under new ownership. I notice a number of complaints about the phone system....response being "please call" so we can discuss further. Good luck with that. Get a better phone system. Saw Dr. Sheer. She was super friendly and informative. Our pediatrian recommended our daughter see Dr. Sheer. We were afraid that our daughter would be difficult since she has never had an eye exam before but she did really well. She took her time during the exam and was very thorough. We loved her so much that our whole family sees her now. They also have a nice variety of brands and style of glasses to choose from. And the turnaround on receiving our glasses was very quick. I've been coming here for 6 + years but for the past few years, the service has been horrible. The wait and being on hold to get to the receptionist to schedule an appt take almost a half hour every time I call and when the wait is longer than 30 min you have to leave a message for a callback and I'll be damn if I miss their phone call the whole freaken process starts all over again. When coming to the office to check in, the front staff is not welcoming at all. They seem more annoyed every single time a patient checks in. The staffing had definitely gone downhill. Brookside is a well-oiled patient centered machine with heart! Having been their customer for over 10 years i've seen 4 different optometrists; all delivering personal, efficient care. In addition, each employee from "on the phone" to front office to various "exam procedures" have always been "awake, alert, eager!" to assist. (in this "post Covid shut down" we read good employees are hard to find.) Dr.Laurel has been exceptional. Of course she is a bright/qualified/experienced clinician.. but more than that, she is "present" during her time with me. Whatever else may be going on in her life, she remains totally focused on the patient. IN FACT, this Saturday morning my wife called Brookside Optometric to cancel an existing appointment with one of the optometrists AND make NEW first time appointment with Dr Laurel. Immediately a "live" friendly person in the phone and her cancellation/new appointment was handled in minutes. Another example of their efficiency. read more

Everyone is so friendly. I have an eye condition called keratoconus and the doctor I met with has gone above and beyond to get me the help I need. Unlike other different optometrist here in Stockton that I have gone to, they didn't even know I had this condition !they couldn't tell me why I couldn't see! witch if I had known sooner I could have had taking care of it sooner .Now I have to wait for a cornea transplant . I didn't know think that I would be able to see clear again I been having my rgp lenses for about a month now and it's definitely a life changer . Have been going to brookside since i was a child. Over the years have gotten many wrong eye prescriptions. Had to go get it redone at a different office, but kept going to brookside to get glasses for two reason. They have a large selection of glasses and their warranty. 1 year replacement on the flames, and 2 years on the lenses. They no longer honor that warranty even if you are still in that time frame. Due to the high cost they add on to services, and frames. I would recommend going to a different place. read more

There are several reasons for the 1 star but mainly the rating is for their customer service. Feels like they really don't care as long as you pay. We have insurance and my son was due for new frames and we placed an order but they found his spare (his prescription didn't change) I called that same day to cancel the order and save it for when we need it since we only qualify every 2 years. I called and explained to them. I left 2 voicemails that day and then I called Thursday left vm and Friday left vm. They finally called me back that Friday afternoon and told me they would talk with the manger but never got a call back called again Monday and nothing they said the order was already placed and they would talk with manager and call me back it's now Thursday and I showed up to pick up the glasses and asked to speak with said manager and she is in a meeting. I also work in customer service and I understand we all get busy but this is so petty and underwhelming for an office that brings in so much revenue. Please if you are considering them as Dr's office fond somewhere else to get your prescription filled. It's bad enough for me that I am taking my family elsewhere with the exception of my son who likes dr sheer and has been seeing her since he was 4. Losing 5 clients might not be a big deal to them but I will be telling everyone I know about this experience. I hope they change in the future. read more

Made an appointment with this doctor for a certain day, and I leave work early to come to my appointment and they say oh it was the previous day. They never gave me courtesy call or text at all. Office made a mistake with my daughter's glasses. So much so, she cannot see out of the glasses. She is essentially blind. Spoke to 2 people in the office, none would speak about what might be wrong or how to fix. Only wanted to talk in hypotheticals. They refused to fix the problem or try to find out what is wrong. My insurance VSP, requires they fix the problem or take a return of the glasses for a full refund. They refused. I had to contact VSP and now VSP is taking care of the problem. Not the cheapest frames and lenses, but really great service. Service: I've been coming here for about 8 years and the service has been amazing. Receptionists are very fast and attentive. They pick up the phones right away and there's usually no or a very short line to check in. The assistants are very well trained and have great bed side manners. They know how to work the machinery well. The doctors are top notch. Most are graduates from UC Berkeley and they do a lot of volunteer work. If one doctor is not available, you can often switch to another without any gaps in service. Inside: Very clean and well kept. The layout hasn't changed in years, but it works! They accurately schedule patients so that the facilities aren't too overcrowded. Pricing: The women's selections is 2x the men's selection. This bugs me but I understand that it may be just based on their clientele. My main gripe is with the pricing. Brookside carries most of the top luxury brands, and very few of the more affordable ones. I understand that doctors mostly make their money off of insurance, but it is a bit annoying that most of the lenses that actually look good are prices above what is the average insurance coverage amount. Almost every time I pick frames, I have to pay out of pocket, and I think this is due to how they price their frames. Overall, great service and great office. I just wish they'd carry more men's styles, and would come down on price a bit. read more

Every time we come here we spend more money then the next year with the same insurance. They do a poor job of explaining what is covered and what isn't. I was told it would be better using one insurance instead of dual (my husband and I both have vision coverage). It's expected that doctors offices should run and know what is covered and warn patients before they're seen. That procedure has been lost nowadays and it's highly disappointing. I had my first appt exam on the 14th of August 2020. I picked them because thry have 5 stars. I was very pleased and impressed how they handle the COVID-19 guidelines. When I went in I was greeted in a nice friendly professional manner. I only had to wait about 10 minutes to go in and have my eye exam. The man that took me in was really nice. I forgot his name. He was Asian. My doctor was Dr. Wong. She was really nice and made you feel at home. All of the people here are very nice and a peaceful atmosphere. When I went to pick out my glasses I had Amy. She was really nice and patient. I love my glasses. Took a couple weeks to get them but I'm really satisfied and will definitely go back for my next visit. When I arrived at 8:05 with my appointment at 8:00 they said they no longer have a grace period but never once let their patients know.
