The Gastroburger
Judy H.

Came in on a Saturday around 5:45pm. We had a group of seven. They kindly put us at a large table with bench seating. This is a local sports bar with a warehouse feel. There is a large rectangular bar and several tables. We opened a tab for our table and ordered several entrees: gastroburger (medium), bacon cheeseburger, Greek salad and the peach raspberry mile purple crown and an old fashion. The burgers were amazing!!! The Greek salad had a great lemon dressing : ) the drinks (mules, old fashioned, beer). Loved this place. Food is amazing and drinks were great as well. The only thing is that there is only street parking or a paid parking lot.

Ambiance 5/5- It's clean, expansive with plenty of dining options, from their basement to the rooftop. Perfect place for happy hour or hanging with family or friends. Food 4/5 -We had pizza, salad and buffalo wings. I was expecting standard tasting food but the taste exceeded my expectations. The pizza crust was light and fluffy like it was oven fire roasted. The buffalo wings were exceptionally crispy which is rare in most buffalo wings. Everything was good! Service 4/5- We sat at the bar and our bartender was warm and welcoming.

Guacamole bacon burger with side salad!

Stopped here before heading to the auditorium across the street. Decided to try this place because location location location lol. You walk up and order, they have a large beer menu as well as food options. I had the guacamole bacon burger and it was honestly cooked perfectly with a side salad instead of fries. Husband had the spicy chicken sandwich which is a thin cutlet that's breaded perfectly on a sourdough bread and fries. Daughter has the grilled cheese with tomato soup and she loves it! There was a bit of a wait for food so I'm happy we came early. But I don't think they were expecting it to be busy with kids on a Wednesday. So definitely would come back again.

Interior of the building

This is one of these businesses that is confusing as to what the name is. To make things simple and according to the Sacramento County food facility inspection website, it is called "Burgers and Brewhouse". The main dining area is called "Midtown Gastro Bar" while the rooftop area names it "Midtown Rooftop Bar". And even though they are still owned by the same people that own Burgers and Brew, this place is not on the Burgers and Brew website. Sometimes multiple restaurants under one owner can be quite a tricky process. However, this place is affiliated by their sister (and more popular) location at R and 14th St's as well as locations in West Sacramento, Davis, and Chico. Located directly on J St. (and in between 16th and 17th St's in the heart of Midtown Sacramento), Midtown Gastro Bar has been operating since 2018. Before, this place was where "Purgatory" once stood until the building was left empty for a few years. During my most recent experience, I ended up coming here during the afternoon of Sunday 5/21/2023 at around 3:30pm. As many other Yelp reviews have stated, the purpose of visiting a restaurant is to enjoy the beautiful outdoors; especially when Sacramento experiences beautiful weather in the spring and fall months. Which is why I find it quite disappointing that their rooftop bar is ONLY opened Friday & Saturday from 8pm-12am. However, this place does have a decent outdoor patio where you can enjoy a meal & drink as well as peoplewatching everyone going about their day. The inside though is quite impressive with a very spacious bar area, lots of tables for dining in (especially the cool winter night and hot summer days), and quite a bit of TV's that are viewable from every angle. Their menu is your standard pub-styled food that includes mozzarella sticks, jalapeño poppers, wings, sandwiches, salads, and pizzas. Their burger selection is very minimal as they only have about 3 different burgers (as opposed to the 20+ burgers from their other locations). Since I wasn't craving anything too heavy, I ended up ordering their "12 Bone-in Buffalo Wings" for my +1 and I priced at a very reasonable $12. These wings are sautéed in red-hot buffalo sauce and I ended up going with both ranch and bleu cheese dressings. To drink, I went with an iced cold "Mojito" also priced low at just $7. During my visit, I ordered everything at the bar while the bartender handed me a number and I proceeded to sit outside. Service was timely and attentive as they only took about 10 minutes to bring my wings out. Overall, these wings hit the spot with a ton of chicken meat and the perfect amount of seasoning. All in all, "Midtown Gastro Bar" is a decent place for comfort food, a variety of drinks, and a good place to gather with friends. Many Yelp reviews have stated that the service, wait times, and food did not meet their expectations. I will say, at least from my experience that I had an enjoyable experience other than not being able to go to the rooftop bar. With that said and done, I am giving them an above average four star rating.

Chicken sando
Joseph N.

Disclaimer: bartenders and servers seem cool. This is obviously a business owner disregard to their business I ran into this spot by looking at a wall of food items that don't even exist. This chicken sando is garbage. Since I read the wall and ordered expecting the wall food. Bro I expected coleslaw, pickles, aoili.. but it was actually a LTO Buffalo chicken sandwich with sourdough... fix your wall dudes that's absolutely ridiculous. And the price is insane. Fries aren't even that good. I am just so disappointed man. Figure it out.

I had such a fun, first-time visit at Midtown Gastro Bar. Met up with some friends for some drinks and small bites. They have a dog-friendly outdoor front patio (huge-plus) and they have an even bigger roof-top with comfy cabana-like couches plus a full bar upstairs. The DJ spinning on the Friday night I visited was great. He had the crowd dancing and having fun! The main floor is nice too. When you enter, you are greeted with high ceilings and a big open bar that's adjacent to the kitchen. They have multiple big screen TVs throughout the walls, which makes this spot great for watching sports especially for those Sunday Football games. I think I found my go to place for my Sunday Fundays!!! This place is very underrated and deserves more than its current 3 star rating. Come check out Midtown Gastro Bar, such a fun environment!

Menu as of 9/5/23

The original place we intended to eat at was closed, so a quick Yelp search showed Midtown Gastro Pub was open and just around the corner. Since it was a Tuesday night, parking wasn't much of an issue but they do have a parking lot to the right of the building should there be no street parking. When we walked in, it was pretty empty. Literally only 5 people and that's including the bartender and cook! Again, kinda expected since it was late on a random Tuesday. We walked up to the bar and they had the menus on the counter so we grabbed some and seated ourselves. After a few minutes, the bartender came to our table with waters and took our order. I had the fish and chips, my husband had the tomato soup with grilled cheese and we also got their jalapeño poppers. Fish and chips were meh, just ok. You'd think they have a beer batter but it was more like bread crumbs. Fish is also tilapia, so a cheap fish at a fairly steep price. My husband did enjoy his tomato soup though. The jalapeño poppers were decent but I had asked for blue cheese instead of ranch and he still brought ranch. Our friend ordered a Strawberry vodka with soda water and he was given a vodka cranberry. Not even remotely close to what he ordered. Overall service was ok, he was the only one tending bar and working the tables. Inside is fairly large, there is a downstairs that was blocked off where all the brewery tanks and equipment are. The main level has a large open bar with seating all around and pub style tables along the walls. Upstairs is their rooftop bar, unfortunately it was closed off the night we came but may be worth another visit to check it out. Overall food ok, nothing exceptional. Menu is a little lacking as well. Between the messed up drink, no blue cheese and minimal follow up, service was just ok as well. Would we be back for late night eats, probably not but I'd come back to try out the rooftop area.

The Irish fries are awesome! I ate my burger with out taking a picture!

This place is awesome! I walked in with my husband tonight to eat a good burger and a good burger is what I got! Not only was the food good but the bartender was great! His name was Marco! Another customer who was 86ed refused to leave and began yelling at him that she was going to get him fired. She was out of line and he handled it beautifully! I tried my best to stay out of it because you just never know these days. He walked away and let her fight with herself until she finally left. As a bartender myself I made sure to let him know that he handled it well and I definitely want management to know that he did well! He then went above and beyond to make the rest of our experience great! Thank you Marco!

Juan V.

Service was great. Bartender allowed us to try our choice of beer prior to final order. We ordered two burgers I ordered The gastroburger- Delicious. And my friend the Spicy Guacamole Burger- Its a decent spice to enjoy your burger. Fast service too. 100% recommended. They also have a rooftop to chill every once in a while.

They are just kids and we reserve the 1st floor for them

It's that mix of a lively sports bar with really good Italian food, all inside a historic space filled with sports memorabilia. Walking in feels like stepping back in time with all the vintage photos everywhere. Knowing Joe Marty, a former professional baseball player, originally opened his bar here back in 1938 and seeing how they've renovated it without losing that character makes it feel like a really special piece of the city. One of my favorite moments was when my husband ordered a Manhattan and the bartender came over and poured it tableside. It turned into this whole little production and the table next to us immediately ordered one too, which was kind of fun to watch. The food held up just as well. My teen had the spaghetti with marinara and meatballs on the side and finished the entire plate, which says everything. I told our waiter Sean to surprise me and he brought out the lobster ravioli and I was not mad about that at all. It was so good. My husband ordered the carbonara with shrimp and that was also a hit. The bread came out warm and fresh, but just a heads up the dipping sauce was pretty spicy. Our palates was definitely feeling it, so we ended up switching to balsamic and olive oil instead. Even the restrooms had things to look at, including old Land Park newspapers, which just adds to how much character this place has. Helpful tip: If you're not sure what to order, let your server guide you. Ours nailed it.
