My regular smog check place, where I'd been going for years, suddenly closed, and I only found out when I drove up and discovered the building had become an EV used car lot. Go figure. Sigh. So I jumped on Yelp, found Midnight Smog, and I'm very glad I did. They were a little difficult to find at first because Google Maps sent us to the wrong location, but once we called, they were super helpful. I asked if I needed an appointment, and they said, "Nope, come right in." That alone was a huge win. The service was excellent from start to finish. They were professional, reliable, affordable, and efficient. The owner was incredibly nice, knowledgeable about cars, and very friendly. My car was smog checked and everything was handled within about an hour. In a world where good service can be hard to find, Midnight Smog was a breath of fresh air. I have not given feedback in quite awhile, but I felt compelled to jump on and express my absolute joy at finding Midnight Smog. Like other reviewers, if I could give 10 stars, I would. I have been getting my cars smogged for over 44 years and this is bar-none the best, most reasonably priced smog test I have ever visited. (in my life, that is around 30-35 smog tests so far). As for the shop: good location, the signage is really clear, the shop is spotless, the staff is really friendly and helpful and the price with a coupon is unbeatable. Backstory: I have zero time during the regular week to go to a shop. Saturday is my only option. I searched north county (Encinitas, Carlsbad, Escondido and San Marcos) for Smog shops that were open on Saturdays. I figured no one would be open on Sunday. One shop in my Encinitas neighborhood was listed as open until 4pm on Saturday... I drove down at 3:15pm... NOPE! They stop taking new customers at 3pm and would not make an exception! They obviously do not want my business. I jumped back on the Internet & found Midnight Smog. Great name! ...and I was amazed they they actually stay open until midnight on Wednesdays! More importantly, they are open until 8pm all other days - Sundays included - and were STAR certified. San Marcos is a 20 minute drive - but I had to get my car smogged this weekend, so I drove up with no appointment. There were two customers ahead of me, one was having his car smogged. The owner Nic immediately acknowledged me and said he would be with me shortly. Nic was so efficient that my turn came up before I knew it. As mentioned, the entire shop is spotless and the waiting lobby is really comfortable. They offer free coffee and water and they have a beautifully restored Porsche 914 and a rare BMW Isetta on display. I asked a few questions about the Isetta (I had never seen one before) and that started a really interesting discussion with Nic's father Fred. My wife even liked being there. Long story short - I will NEVER go to any other smog shop again. Seriously, even if I had to drive 40 minutes and wait in line an hour with 10 other people in front of me, I would go to Midnight Smog. Getting my car smogged here is better than any other shop I have been to. It makes me happy to support this business and will tell everyone I know about it. Not only was it only $40, but the shop was exceptionally clean, tidy, and professional, and the owner is by far the nicest shop owner that I have met.
