I had purchased a Groupon for a Smog Check at Super Smog Escondido. Johnson immediately greeted me when I arrived. I was the only customer throughout my visit and did not have to wait while he immediately began the intake process and inspection. Near completion, he mentioned that it had been a little difficult to read the numbers on my catalytic converters. This was surprising because, although my vehicle is a 2000, the converters were newly installed just a few years ago. I shared that I had bought my vehicle at an auction and afterwards learned it needed all four of the converters so...spending more than the car is worth.. I had new ones installed a few years ago. I have also had my vehicle smogged after the converters were installed, years ago. After completing the inspection and passing, I provided my Groupon to another Auto Tech while Johnson moved my car out of the service bay. Johnson instructed the other Auto Tech, if I was paying cash, it would be $10 (exactly) for my "8.25" smog check certificate". (I didn't realize this discrepancy until after I had left). Right after I had paid and after he had parked my vehicle, Johnson re-approached the service desk and explained that he needed to charge me an additional $10 because there was an "aftermarket service charge." I replied that I had read some of the reviews his business has received and mentioned that, in his replies, he often states for customers to refer to the terms of the Groupon. I then explained that there is nothing in the terms and conditions on the Groupon that mentions an "aftermarket service charge." He referred me to a sign under the service desk that showed a $10 charge for aftermarket parts, then he admitted it is not included in the terms on the Groupon certificate but that he would be adding it soon. He then offered not to charge me the fee "this time" but that now I would know for next time. Two stars for the fast, friendly service; minus three stars for the round up the certificate fee and the other surprise upcharges. Ultimately, I suggest you reconsider going to Super Smog Escondido if it would make you uncomfortable to refuse to pay incorrect charges ($10 instead of the $8.25 certificate fee) and other inappropriate charges that this business will likely try to tack on. Personally, I plan to not return. There are other smog inspection places nearby that are competitively priced and don't play these haggling, bait-and-switch games. read more

Called for a star station smog check.No appt necessary. In and out in 10 minutes. Unfortunately it failed inspection so have to repair and make a trip back. Will be charged again should be a good bargain. read more

Disappointed. Took a car in previously and was satisfied. I liked the guy who runs the shop and the service was quick. Brought in my 2002 4runner this week and was charged an extra $20. This takes it just to the state mandated maximum of $50. My old smog station didn't charge an additional fee for my 4Runner. It was a new guy this time and he told me that this $20 was new and State mandated and that they didn't see a penny of the $20. Did a quick search on the internet and found that was a BS story. In California, an SUV smog check typically doesn't incur an extra charge compared to a standard car smog check; however, some smog check stations may add a small additional fee, usually around $10, for larger vehicles like SUVs, vans, or trucks depending on the station and the specific vehicle type. Also consider that it isn't anymore complicated or different to smog this vehicle vs a passenger sedan. It's just a rip off and not every smog shop does it. read more

Extremely disappointed with this shop. When loading my truck, the technician slammed my door into the alignment machine, leaving paint damage. The alignment was done twice and still pulled hard to the right. When I returned the next day, they somehow made it worse--now every right turn feels unsafe, like the wheel could fall off. To make matters worse, the person who advertised this shop on Facebook deleted his post and stopped responding as soon as I shared my experience. Went to get my smog checked and they failed me because the check engine light was on. So I spent $200 on a new part and labor to get the O2 sensor fixed, came back and they charged me for reinspection! Why not just tell me up front, hey, just so you know we're going to have to charge you again once you take care of the check engine light...?! Had I known that, I would have waited till it was fixed first. Total waste of money that could have been avoided. Overall point is, terrible customer service. Just a greedy money grab. I went to this place to get my car smog tested end it went fine but of course my car failed. The employee told me if I came back it would be cheaper for the second try. So I get my car fixed and bring it back. He tells me prices went up and doesn't give me a discount like he offered me before. Just thought that was really shady. I ended up paying more for my second attempt than the first. Of course he tells me the price after he was done checking the car. I mentioned it when I saw this ridiculous amount and they guy just said "oh yeah it's $29.99 plus some extra fees because the STAR smog is more expensive" total came to $78.23. Really? $30 on fees, wow. Called smog check Escondido and they told me the price for a STAR smog for my car was $50. I feel robbed. Total rip-off job. Advertise online for a $29.99 smog test, took the bite. Big mistake. They charged additional $10 for SUV and trucks, $10 for certificate, sales tax and 4% credit card convenient fee and the total came out to over $55.00 could have done it here locally cheaper without having to drive the extra 20 miles from SD to this $hit hole. read more
