We had 6:45 reservations and spent about an hour and half there. You choose the length of your reservation when you make it. I'd say it's about one drink per hour unless you drink very quickly. And I wouldn't recommend drinking quickly because 1) you want to savor the drinks and flavors but also 2) they are strong! The staff is great. They are very interested in what they're doing and knowledgeable. I don't know if you could get a seat by just showing up. It's fun to learn to details of a seemingly simply cocktail. logistics: We came on a Friday around 5:30 pm as walk-ins. It's a bit hard to find but it's the door with the red lightbulb. We rang the doorbell and it took a while for them to open so just be patient. Luckily, we were able to get seated for an hour before a reservation showed up. So glad they were able to fit us! During this time, there was plenty of street parking near 6th. I don't love the reservation system. You have to put a $20 deposit and there's not an option to modify your time. Had tons of open seating but I'd assume they were waiting on the reservations. They did seat us in the back patio. Was disappointed that the back patio didn't include the same drinks as the inside. Midnight Cowboy is the epitome of a hidden gem on dirty 6th. We were lucky to get in on a whim on our daughter's birthday because it was a Thursday night and pretty early for the young crowd. Usually reservations a required, but they had some cancellations which opened up a table for us. You also have to reserve on the hourly or two hour basis, so plan ahead when visiting this speakeasy! It's dark but not dank. It's secretive but not seedy. It's in an old building with an interesting history! It's everything you want in speakeasy! Always a treat to be able to visit this cool speakeasy on 6th street in Austin. Formerly a brothel called the Midnight Cowboy modeling agency and massage parlor, this speakeasy has a interesting history and cool atmosphere. They have a variety of great cocktails some of which are made and served table side. The bartenders really take the time to explain how they are making the drinks and how the ingredients work with each other. Definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Austin. This bar is in the middle of dirty 6th street which is really weird because it's surrounded by a punch of rowdy college bars that people party in while this place is a chill bar hidden behind what looks to be an apartment complex door. Recommendations are highly recommended and you can make one online pretty easily. When you get to the front you will not see any signage but you will see a little call box that has some names next to the buttons. One of the names on that list should be "Harry Craddock" and that's the button you should press in order to summon someone who will open the door for you. For my first drink I asked the bartender for a recommendation and he gave me the dark roast ($13) which he said is similar to an old fashioned that I can only get here. For my second drink I ordered the hotel nacional ($12) and both drinks were strong and delicious. This was such a cool bar and an interesting experience! read more

This was a truly hidden speakeasy, as there is no sign out front to guide you. I pressed the button on a panel outside and when the door opened I was asked if I had a reservation. I had made a reservation for two hours, all dependent on the number of drinks you thought you'd order. After a moment, they opened the security door and let us into this classic, dimly lit bar and sat us in an upholstered booth. Loved the cocktail menu that looked like a passport, with a full description of each drink on every page. The drinks were uniquely presented. The ordered the Jungle Bird, a tiki drink served in a parrot glass! The Afrikan Rif was made tableside. It was s treat to watch as the server made drinks on a cart!! It's an absolute experience. Midnight Cowboy seems to no longer be the quiet, elegant speakeasy that it was a couple years ago. Whenever I visit Austin, I prioritize reservations to visit the intimate Midnight Cowboy experience. However, this past weekend, I was extremely disappointed by the apparent deterioration of the beverage quality and service. None of my party's drinks arrived as described: the sparkling wine cocktail had no bubbles, the Szechuan peppercorn drink was sweet/syrupy without any spice, & the drink that was advertised to be made on the cart was not. We absolutely understand that restaurants are still recovering post-covid, and decreased quality is excusable - had it not been paired with such offensive service. *The server who presented the building's history as a brothel told us it was a "whore house" and that some of the previous employees(?) still worked there and we could probably "guess who they were." We've heard the spiel many times before, and this twist on the description seemed unnecessarily vulgar and also slightly racial, given the buildings' former status as an 'Oriental Massage' parlor. Was the server suggesting that we search for any Asian employees? *We were seated in one of the private rooms and were surprised to be greeted by a Jock-Jams playlist, including (but certainly not limited to) "The Macarena" and Venga Boys "We Like to Party." After 45-minutes of politely asking all 3 servers who came by our room if we could either have a music change or simply lower the volume, the staff provided conflicting reports that: (1) They weren't/couldn't control the music, (2) we must be hearing music from outside, or (3) the music was playing everywhere in the bar and we were the only ones who didn't like it. The rest of the bar was definitely playing different music than our room, so we were very confused by the staff responses. After ~45 minutes, we finally decided that the experience would not turn out to be as we desired. We were slightly embarrassed of the experience we had subjected our friends to endure. Comically, just before we left, one of the servers DID finally change the playlist in our room. Hopefully, Midnight Cowboy will return to better days. read more

I've been here twice now and I could easily become a regular if I was local to Austin. First the staff are incredible, some of the most talented bartenders I have ever met. They are an absolute wealth of knowledge and they love to share. I found all of them approachable, informative, and perfectly attentive. True artists of their craft. Second the atmosphere is just what I want for an intimate evening over cocktails. Their semi-private spaces in the back for slightly larger parties are wonderful. The booths are perfect for date night. Third their COVID-19 protocols have been exemplary. I felt very safe both visits. And lastly THE DRINKS. OMG. the drinks. You have to make a reservation and then their is a little buzzer at the front which you have to buzz to get in. Pros: Cute concept. They give you a passport which serves as your menu, and you choose drinks which are unique based upon what destination you choose. Some of the drinks are made right at your table while others are made at the bar. The server did a great job explaining the passport menu to us as well. Drinks were delicious and pretty strong. Cons: It is very dark in there. It made for a romantic vibe I guess but it was almost too dark to even see the menu or anything. Additionally, the place itself is very small and their patio wasn't completed, so we couldn't go back there either. This place was so so cool! I love speakeasys and I've been to a few, but Midnight Cowboy was really unique! We got really really lucky that we got in. It was more of a lucky happenstance. We found the door to the bar, and we were right behind a group that was just entering the password to the bar to go in. We followed in but were stopped by the bartender and told we needed a reservation. He checked to see if there were any tables available and we were lucky that someone just cancelled their reservation, so we could sit. Apparently you have to make a reservation about a month in advance. Each reservation is an hour long and you get one or two drinks max. The drink menu is intense. All the drinks were in this cute passport booklet. They have a lot of classic cocktails, but there were 16 cocktails that represented different countries. They were each really interesting and unique cocktails representing the country! My friend ordered the Alaska and they did a demonstration on a cart in front of us to make it. It was so so cool! It's a must to have a reservation. The drinks were absolutely incredible and all had a unique twist to them. There are specific drinks on the menu that the bartenders will bring a cart out and make in front of you, which was a wonderful experience because the servers went into detail about what each ingredient brought to the drink, giving each cocktail more meaning. For our reservation we were put in one of the more private rooms, with details of exposed brick that has been there for over 220 years.
