Try to get there early as by the time we got there around (~10am) many pastries were already sold out. However, I would recommend the Smoked Salmon open face sandwich. This was one of the best things I had while on Kauai, it was so fresh and so flavorful! We also had the Prosciutto sandwich, Ginger Cinnamon Morning Buns and coffees all of which were good. French patisserie meets Hawaiian flavors. Not much for ambience nor speed, but incredible baked goods and prepared sandwiches. We stopped by en route to Lihue to grab some snacks for our flight... Unfortunately, we ate them all before we boarded the plane! We had a breakfast croissant sandwich which had incredible lamination- flakey and melt in your mouth buttery! We also grabbed an ube turnover (purple yam) and orange cinnamon roll. We tried to '"just take a bite" of each, but ended up eating both before we had started boarding the plane. Would recommend traveling with a box of pastries (which you keep sealed until you've boarded the flight to remove temptation) to increase the likelihood arriving at your destination with goodies to share! read more

Delicious, fresh food. The pizza was a nice surprise, as we didn't see it on the menu. While we were ordering, one of the chefs brought it up and told the woman taking orders it was available. My wife visit Midnight Bear Breads for pastries multiple times each time we stay on Kauai (even though it's about a ten mile drive from where we stay.) We love the macadamia nut cinnamon rolls, the almond croissants, and the pastries with local fruits and cream cheese. Treat yourself with a visit to this fantastic bakery. Like many small towns America, Hanapepe has a tale of two diners: - One is oldschool, traditional, offers massive portions at meager prices, and probably has a truck or 3 parked out front. In this town, this is Bobbie's. (it's also cash-only and has no public restroom) - The other is the new, hip, trendy place where you can find gluten free items, fancy-looking takes on the classics, and a few Subarus outside. That's what Midnight Bear Breads is. On our last day in Kaua'i, we did both. We got food at Bobbie's (amazing, check my review) and we got coffee at Midnight Bear Breads. The coffee was fantastic, some of the best on the island. The ambiance was appropriately hip, in stark contrast to Bobbie's. We saw other folks getting the food, and well as baked goods on display. All looked incredible! Hours are weird (only open on M-W-F) so make sure you plan ahead, or just go to Bobbie's next door! read more

My experience getting a couple sandwiches for lunch wasn't good. There was no one ahead of us, and after waiting a while for our order, I noticed there didn't seem to be any activity in the kitchen. The lady who seemed to be in charge went back, then came out and said they were just wrapping up our sandwiches. Five minutes later, still no sandwiches. I did an errand in town and returned. Sandwiches were ready, which we took to go, only to find they'd used a stale piece of bread on one of the sandwiches. Plus they charged $2 for extra pesto mayo on one of the sandwiches. Amazing! I was researching coffee shops in the area before we got to Kauai, and this place popped up on a list of the best places in the nation for croissants. We got there around 9:30 and there was a long line, but it moved pretty fast. Ordered the almond croissant with homemade marzipan, which I can say was the absolute best I've ever had. Flaky, crispy outside, soft and tasty inside. The Mac nut and lemon lavender rolls were yummy, and I almost snatched my husband's ham and cheese croissant. Everything was delicious. Prices are reasonable, lots if flavor options. We didn't try the beverage but they had a big menu. I wish we were staying closer so we could have had lunch - the menu items looked amazing. Staff was friendly. Cozy interior and some outdoor seating but we took our box to the beach for breakfast with a view. If you're in south Kaui, definitely worth the drive. read more

OMG - this bakery is AMAZING! The kouign and chocolate croissants were incredible! I'm a baker and typically very critical of bakery... this may be one of the best bakeries I've been to in a long time. What a hidden gem! During a walking tour of Hanapepe, our second stop was the Midnight Bear Bakery. We tried the Caprese croissant, which was good, and the macadamia nut cinnamon roll, which is very good. During my most recent visit to Kauai (Early October 2018), we decided to give Midnight Bear Breads a go for lunch. We had it bookmarked on Yelp and decided to take a short drive from Poipu to Hanapepe. This was our 4th visit to Kauai so we've explored most of the small towns spread out over the island and we wanted try some new places to eat this visit. Hanapepe is a super small town, really not too much to see, but It's a nice stop on the way to Waimea Canyon or if you are checking out Port Allen which is the next town over. Midnight Bear Breads not only bakes fresh loaves of bread and other pastry goodies, they also make a mean panini that will knock your socks off. My wife ordered the Pesto Grilled Cheese & I had the Prosciutto Grilled with a delicious balsamic reduction. Both sandwiches came out piping hot and were absolutely yummy. Although the Panini's were really good, the plate looked a little baron. I wish they would add a small mixed green salad or even potato chips on the side to step up their plating a bit. It smells wonderful in this small mom n' pop eatery and the two owners behind the counter seem to love what they do and are hustling to keep their customers happy. The next time we are on island, we will definitely come back and give their homemade croissants a shot. read more

Always a line the entire time we were there. Unfortunately they don't heat up pastries. We got: Croissant bread pudding- it lacked enough moisture and was too dry for my liking. They serve it cold and even if you heat it up it just wasn't any good, skip it. Nutella cruffin- reminded me of the morning bun from Tartine from SF. It was crispy, flaky, sugary and soft in the middle. The fact that they used real Nutella was an added bonus. Mac nut cinnamon roll- it was crispy, not too sweet, and just the right amount of cinnamon to it. Way better than the Hanalei bread company one. read more

WOW! That was tasty! I was looking for a place that would give more choices than a salad to our family vegetarian and this place was AWESOME! I had the hot Caprese sandwich (fresh mozzarella, tomato, macadamia nut pesto, house made citron balsamic, reduction, sea salt, and cracked pepper on fresh baked country sourdough). It was almost the same as the pesto grilled cheese (which almost everyone else had), but with a little extra. I also bought a macadamia nut cinnamon roll and ... that was gone before we left the restaurant. We also bought some Rosemary Sea Salt Baguettes, which were great at home with butter ... mmm ... Parking was on street parking, but we found a spot fairly close. Inside, you order at the counter (short line), and find a table. The restaurant was in historic Hanapepe, so I think that if we'd wanted to wander and window shop, it would have been a great place to do so ... but we wanted to get to the Salvation Army thrift store in Hanapepe before it closed for the day.
