We discovered only after the fall chill descended that the fancy, idiot-proof Heat&Glow gas log fireplace operated by a wall switch in our "new" house was blowing black soot, so much that we couldn't even see through the glass enclosure. We found Midgley's through the manufacturer's website, where they're listed as an authorized service provider. Unfortunately, Midgley's is very popular: that was November, and we couldn't get a service appointment until January. So we waited with our cold living room and our fingers crossed that it wasn't something expensive. Andrew arrived right on time and did a fabulous job taking the whole complicated thing apart and cleaning it meticulously with a brush, vacuum, and spray cleaners. Turns out that yes, there was actually a set of logs behind the thick layer of black soot on the glass, and that the original installers forgot to open the air intake! That's right, it was completely closed, which was a simple fix but could have been a complete disaster if we'd continued to use it. Whew! The standard fee for a maintenance service call is $199, and they give a discount if you preemptively schedule maintenance in the off-season (summer). They recommend service yearly, and I can see why. Five stars for the excellent tech service, four stars for the scheduling. Next time, we'll know to plan ahead. read more

Due to a health issue, we needed to change a wood burning fireplace to a gas burning insert. The first company we had out to estimate this for us ended up telling us that it wasn't possible to do. We then went to Midgleys. Roger was prompt and professional taking many measurements, inspecting multiple areas and even going on the roof to check the venting. He designed the best option for us, and we gave the go ahead to get it done. On demo day Red & Johnny were so professional, placing floor tarps down, enclosing the old fireplace to limit dust, and communicating every step of the way. So happy to have Andrew back again this year to check on our gas fireplace. He reminded me where the on/off switch is in case the remote stops functioning, which was a concern. I purchased a wood stove. After researching, I decided to use Midgley's as they did EVERYTHING. Nothing was subcontracted out. When Ryan, Drew, Anthony and Red came for the install, they protected my wood floors with tarps and walking boards before they started. They were on time, kind and courteous. Ryan was very patient in explaining how the stove works and was very knowledgeable about the install. When they were finished, they took the time to review with me how to complete the process with the inspection. Everything was extremely well organized. Worst customer service for pellet stoves in Eugene. We were customers for years. They did an annual cleaning, then blamed us for a fuel fire, after showing my husband how to clean it! Refused to help us after the issue. Several times we asked them to find a part & never got back to us. 6 weeks ago my gas fireplace started clicking and not starting. The Midgley repairman Dave Cole has done general cleaning in the past. This time he arrived on time, quickly identified the problem, replaced our electronic box (it has failed) and cleaned the rocks and rest. Dave even convinced my wife on the right way to use the remote control turning the fire on and off. Dave knows his units whether gas pellet and others. The only negative is the long wait from request to scheduled service. Midgley's kept track of my appointment, even called the day before to confirm. Highly recommended for maintenance and repair. read more

We started here when we looked to upgrade our fireplace in our new home. From the start everything felt wrong. We went into their showplace as they suggested to make a selection and because we have a 100 year old home and a unique situation we asked for more guidance. They kept referring us to their catalog and wouldn't schedule someone to come out until we made some selections. So we played along but when the representative came out to give an estimate he was stymied. He said they couldn't get on our roof without bringing heavy equipment, a boom lift and that would start at $1000. Did we want to proceed? We tried to call to discuss this and learn more about the rationale for this expense but no one responded with a satisfactory response. We went elsewhere, where the situation was seamless and personalized and with excellent service, as you'd expect for this line of work. AND they didn't need a boom lift. read more

I had Midgley's install a propane fireplace in my house. The job was poorly managed and did not inform my wife and I that we had to finalize the inspection with the city and acquire an electrician to finish the project. They also left an opening in my wall above the fireplace that was 9 inches wide by 36 inches long. They said that they needed the space so that the could do the install and that it was my job to fix it. I called several electricians to finish the project but all were tied up for at least a month. Fortunately Contractors Electric had a cancellation and were able to get our fireplace working properly. I would not recommend Midgley's but Contractor's Electric on the other hand was fantastic. read more

It was a bit of a wait, a couple months, to have John come out and do a safety inspection and cleaning of our pellet stove and fireplace, but well worth it! He was very knowledgeable and talked me through maintenance on the pellet stove as he trouble shot the blower fan not starting. We just moved to Eugene and our home has a lot of problems. It was apparent the gas log fireplace had not been used in a while so we contacted Midgleys for an inspection and cleaning. They sent over a delightful technician called Andrew. Not only was Andrew very personable but he was extremely competent and professional. He did a fabulous job on the servicing and at my request installed a safety pilot, which he voluntarily painted so it would blend in. He even cleaned the fireplace glass doors. And he left everything spotless. It's been a long time since somebody impressed us with the quality of their work, attitude and positivity. Midgley's sent an employee who had not been vaccinated against COVID to our home, without informing us that he was a health risk. He did not tell us he was unvaccinated before he entered our home. We sent him away when he answered "No" to our question about his vaccine status. When I called Midgley's office to ask why they had risked our lives in this way I was told that "only the State can require employees of a business be vaccinated". This is, of course, completely untrue according to the Oregon Bureau of Labor & Industries (https://www.oregon.gov/boli/workers/Pages/covid-vaccine.aspx) . Any business can set conditions for employment, as long as those conditions are legal. Requiring a COVID vaccine for business employees is not illegal in Oregon. We WERE loyal Midgley's customers for several years, but we have a very different view of them now. How can we trust a company that risked our lives in order to turn a profit? read more

Horrible, every review I just read is so true. I wish I didn't let North West Natural set up the repair for my gas fireplace after they came out and couldn't light my pilot light. I am a new widow and they took advantage of me. The women at the front desk that is the one that collects the money is so rude. She was disrespectful, and lied. Stay away from this place, they not only don't know what their doing but also inappropriately try to charge you. Don't give them your credit card in advance of the work being completed. I enjoy having John Denny come out and clean our wood stove/chimney. He's super efficient and friendly. We've had a very good experience with Midgley's. They removed our pellet stove and installed our wood stove. When I discovered the pipe was crooked, they dispatched someone to right it immediately. When our new stove had the first and then second defective door we've been given prompt help replacing it. No complaints and much appreciation. read more

Overall I was pretty happy with Midgley's. The only feedback I would give would be to estimating the install. When they came out they were very negative about where I wanted to put the stove. I would have appreciated more "this is what we can do" instead of "this is what we can't do." The installation crew was amazing. Clean, friendly, and open to new ideas. Hands down, the second-worst customer service I've experienced in the area. We purchased a $5,000 wood stove insert, which Midgley's installed in April of this year. We didn't get to really test it out until this Fall, and have had nothing but problems for the last two months. We've troubleshooted everything we could find on our own, and have fixed the issue ourselves several times but we obviously need to get to the bottom of why the stove isn't working as well as the salesperson advertised. I left a message for their service tech and when he called me back later that evening, he was immediately rude and abrasive, and refused to listen or help me troubleshoot the problem in any way. I found myself having to lead the conversation in a productive direction. I wasn't looking for any sort of argument - nor was I complaining about the stove - I just needed more information as to what could be going wrong. I hoped that this poor experience was an anomaly for Midgley's but, after reading of others' experiences, it's clear that Midgley's has a history of poor customer service and doesn't care about you once they make the sale. I didn't do enough research before choosing Midgley's (after that heavy snowstorm this year, we were desperate and made a hasty decision). I'm really disappointed in Midgley's after this experience and I urge you to research their competitors and go with a company who values their customers just as much AFTER they take your money. read more

To the Midgleys Staff, We thank all of the Midgleys employees for the wonderful experience we have had with the purchase and installation of the Lopi ANSWER fireplace insert, as the primary heat source, at our newly purchased Oakridge cabin. We had our very first fire on the night of October 2, 2017, and spent the rest of the evening sitting in front of the warming fire sipping wine and simply enjoying a long awaited experience that is the culmination o fa life dream for both of us; a beautiful wood cabin isolated in an old growth forest, fronting on a beautiful clear stream, and warmed by a natural wood fire in a beautiful fireplace! Now every day is much more cherished and we often think of you and how seamlessly all aspects were handled. We thank Mike for the timely lesson on understanding how to properly stack wood! Answered questions we had about maintenance and condition of our fireplace and overall it was a quick and painless visit. As a newcomer to Eugene, I've largely been very impressed with how customer-focused most folks are here. This is was not the case with Midgley's. I have an older custom-built home, and I inherited a very high-end insert that had been purchased from Midlgey's some time ago. Since I'm not familiar with inserts, and have had difficulty tracking down the instruction manual, I called. It took several times but I finally got someone on the phone. That person kept bugging me about the manual, when I all I wanted was a thirty-second conversation with someone about how best to light the wood and keep the unit clean. She sent me to someone whom she promised would "get right back to me." Um. Yeah. Maybe in twenty years. I left a detailed message, listed my phone number several times, and never ever heard anything other than crickets. I guess if you're buying something, they love you. But if you actually need a little simple assistance, they don't want to know. Not the way to build trust and customer support, for at some point I'm likely going to need to purchase products or services. If this is how responsive they choose to be to someone with a simple, swift request, then I have to admit to not being less than enthusiastic about trying again. read more

Age discrimination. No customer appreciation. I went to pick up an item using a family debit card. The woman asked if I was a signer on the account, seeing as how the card had a different first name, same last name. I said yes and showed her my ID. She continued to ask the same question multiple times, then showed me the card saying, "You're a signer on THIS account?" She spoke to me as if I didn't understand how bank accounts worked or as if I was lying. I'm 23 and she was much older. She said "Normally I don't allow this," like I should be thankful she allowed me to buy the $20 item. I think if I was older I would not have received that treatment. I felt as if they couldn't care less about our business and we will not return. read more

Midgleys were called twice last spring to address a problem with a smoking fireplace insert which they had installed ten years ago. My fireplace insert suddenly started smoking like the smoke was coming back down the chimney. Midgleys girls said it just needed a chimney cleaning. So we scheduled one. The first trip out was to clean the chimney. They gave the stove a clean bill of health. It continued to smoke and I called them again. This time the technician said everything looked fine and the we just needed to have a window open when we started a fire. we had not had to do this in ten years, why now? But, the weather grew warm and we didn't need the fire to keep warm so we accepted the second visit as solving the problem. It did not. Last night we wanted to warm up the house so we built a fire like we have for ten years and opened a window like we were told to. The stove bellowed smoke out from all around the outside of the insert. It was horrible, horrible, horrible! I called today and Midgleys are just brushing me off. I should have called last summer, did I have a window open, the flue needs to be warmed up. When I insisted that something is really wrong, and tried to convey my concern the girl got very testy. She said the first they can come out to see the stove is October 27th--they are just really busy this time of the year. They are too busy to even correct a job that they had two tries to fix last spring. When I protested the lack of professional support for a product they sold and installed she hung up on me. I was not rude, I did not curse or yell at her. My voice conveyed my frustration and she hung up on me. Don't do business with these people they are not honorable or reliable and do not back up their products. If I could give them a minus five stars I would. read more

My installation went very well. They removed my old wood stove insert and old zero clearance fireplace from the 1970s for very little money. They gave me a decent price for a summer install. One of the installers thanked me for buying in the summer when he usually had little work. As far as their attitude, it could use improvement. I have found that in Eugene, older more experienced tradesmen tend to be cranky, younger folks tend to be friendlier. read more
