The thin cut catfish is amazing!!! Super nice staff. Restaurant is spacious and clean though I took my order to go. I called my order in and within 15 minutes my order was hot, fresh and ready. read more

Terrible the seafood platter was horrible. 2 to 4 shrimp on the plate and the batter fell off as soon as u picked the shrimp. 3 oyster that were so undercooked they tasted raw. And the fish was so thin it was like eating crust. Do not recommend this place save your money!!! read more

Good food, superrrrr long wait times. Not sure if the wait time really justifies the food and price. But it is a nice big place. Decorated really cool. read more

We had a wonderful experience here! The restaurant was clean and spacious, and our server was attentive. Our party had the thick fried catfish, broiled catfish, boiled shrimp, and lava cake for dessert. Everything was delicious - cooked and seasoned perfectly. Iced tea was great. We will be back! read more

This place was delightful! We stopped here because they had a large parking lot which we needed for our rv. We decided to give it a try without knowing anything about it. We were pleasantly surprised. The crispy thin catfish is so light and crispy. I love it! I've never had catfish prepared that way before. It's fantastic! Our friend ordered the seafood platter-wow! Wedge salad was exceptional with 4 whole strips of bacon across the top. For dessert, the bread pudding was yummy I'm so confused by the poor ratings . Amenities are very nice. Really cute sandy play area for the kids as well. And the staff are wonderful!!!! We will be sure to stop here next time we pass through! read more

Great food and service. We had eaten at one of the other locations that is just too far out of the way for us, so while because of costs, we won't be here super often, but will be more than able for other locations. I need to change up next time though. The turtle soup is excellent. Had never had, though heard people talk about it frequently, and never saw on any menus until Middendorf's. Also had the BBQ shrimp. Father had the salmon, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Stepmother had the fried seafood platter. That had a lot of food (easily can feed two for older couples), and while she felt the stuffed crab was dry and overdone, my father did eat it and enjoyed it. All 3 of us had food left to bring home read more

Not sure where all the negative reviews are coming from, as I thought the place was on-point today for our first visit to this location. I found it to be far more pleasant of an experience than the original location, which in my opinion, has become a total sh1t-show (versus what it was like 40 years ago when I first started going there). Service was great, Food was just as good as at the original location. read more

I'd been To Middendorfs in Akers, after hearing people gush about the tender thin cut catfish at this scenic bayou restaurant. Went with my husband, my dad who was 86, his sister, and her family. My takeaway was the catfish was overcooked and tasted like fried duct tape, and the server completely neglected to bring my dad his lunch. Fast forward two years, having just spent most of the day at my dad's funeral in Slidell, my hubby saw Middendorfs atop a scenic concrete hill nestled by the freeway. We were both hungry, he wanted to try it, and I didn't have a better idea and just hoped for crab cakes. It was around 2 p.m., and when we walked in the waitstaff told us they close at 3, and reminded us later as well. At least the food was better this time... I cried into my turtle soup (my dad's favorite), and the oysters and stuffed crab were delicious. The waitress forgot to bring us lemon wedges, and when my husband asked for some, she bristled. Well, that's Middendorfs, y'all. Hope it's better for you! read more

We were pleasantly surprised at our experience with Middendorfs yesterday ! The food was delicious , the environment was nice and also clean and our server Zack was absolutely wonderful! We will definitely be back! read more

I saw that they were building this new location and was so very excited! Could not wait until it was open!! However, after reading the reviews I am soooo disappointed. My dreams of going to the new, easier to get to 'LEGENDARY Middendorfs" were absolutely crushed. Not just by the very bad Yelp reviews but also from family and friends who've been. All of the people I know say the same thing: Don't waste your time or money. New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood is way better!! How horribly sad! So disappointed, won't even try it out until reviews improve greatly. Come on MIDDENDORF's!! Live up to the Manchac Legend!!! read more

Had lunch here on Saturday 01/25/2020, tried the thin catfish, I did not enjoy it, it's very thin catfish to the point it appears you're eating only the breading. The server did state they also serve regular catfish fillets. Some may enjoy this, I do not plan on returning. Will add the service was very good and attentive. Lunch for two $63.00 read more

If you go here DO NOT get the ceasar shrimp salad - really bad. Tiny shrimp which tasted like they were quickly dipped in watered down crab boil, croutons hard as bricks, lettuce was swimming in dressing and the fish in the salad was cold and hard. Worst $13.50 I ever spent. I was expecting nice size, Louisiana boiled shrimp and a decent amount of them too. Stick with the fried foods as that is what they do best. Another complaint - we went with my family of 15 for my birthday and brought our own cake from Whole Foods and Middendorf's wanted to charge us $2 per person to eat it there. No thank you - that would have cost us an additional $30 to eat a cake we brought. I thought that was totally ridiculous and very UNaccomodating as our table spent nearly $400 that day. Other than that, the place is clean and decor nice. read more

My wife and I had been looking forward to FINALLY eating here! We should have gone to McDonald's !! The gumbo had tomato's in it and was burnt, the fish was bland and just not good! The best thing I ate was the hush puppies! Our waitress was a sweetheart! Such a let down. We ate there with another couple, they woNt be back either !! read more

I got the thin fried catfish and it was delicious!!! The service was great and so is the atmosphere!

First and last time! one and i'm done Lawd have mercy- how can you mess up fried fish, fries, hush puppies and coleslaw- now the bread was delicious! I had enough read more

Went there with our kids so it was a party of 5. Order our food, waitress was very nice. Food comes out and my boyfriend took a bite of his burger and went to set it back on his plate to find a hair there. So he stops eating it and has our waitress take it. Manager comes over, he was like ya there was a hair in my food she then processed to tell him that all of her kitchen staff wears stuff around there beards so hair can't fall. Well my boyfriend has a beard and has never dropped a hair in his food, is it possible sure. She then goes around and says how is your food and yours, then says enjoy and leaves. We didn't get an I'm sorry this happened or anything basically blamed him. She did take off the burger but never in all the years i have eaten out had a manager blame me for hair in my food. I will never go back. read more

Went to Middendorf's for dinner tonight and was really looking forward to someplace to get great catfish. I got the seafood platter and was very disappointed, the catfish had no flavor and was very bland with lots of flavorless batter, the crab cake was loaded with crab but was so dry that it was not edible. Ordered a glass of their HOUSE Cab to the tune of $9.75 per glass...what are they thinking? If this location does survive, it will be from tourist and not from locals. If you are looking for the best catfish you will ever eat - take a road trip to Taylor, Mississippi and try out Taylor Grocery where the catfish is life changing! Can honestly say that I won't be going back to Middendorf's. read more

Great service. Restaurant, menu, decor and food very retro, like you've gone back in time. So-so food. Breading on the catfish is bland. They give you a lot of food, so come hungry. Potato salad is very good. Best part of the meal, aside from the service, was the hush puppies. read more

Terribly expensive for terrible food. Save your money. Everyone just ate in silence (not the good kind).

Middendorf's in Slidell is just like Manchac! The fried catfish and shrimp are the exact recipe as the original. We go to Middendorf's in Manchac every few months and have been for years, so we could tell if anything was changed in their recipe. It is the same delicious taste. Don't mess with success. It's not a spicy coating on the seafood, it's a corn flour, like my grandma used to use. You can really taste the fish and shrimp! Oh, and if you have any room when you're finished with your fish, try the Banana Split! Service was wonderful, attentive, but not hovering. The restaurant is spacious and bright with wonderful cypress wood and murals on the walls. The parking lot is huge and convenient. If you haven't been to Middendorf's in Slidell, GO! read more

If Middendorfs has any plans to see a one year anniversary, they had better step up their game. Wife and I split a seafood platter. We thought that we would get fried oysters, shrimp, thin catfish and stuffed crab. What we got was tasteless oysters with soggy breading, very rubbery shrimp, limp, soggy catfish and a tin shell full of bread crumbs. strongly do not recommend. read more

I've only been once, and I usually give a place more than one shot, but I can't bring myself to do that here. The building is absolutely beautiful. The fried shrimp were okay. That's where the positive ends. It wasn't bad enough to send back, it just wasn't good. The gumbo tastes like vegetable soup. We ordered kids shrimp, a thin catfish, a thick catfish, and a broiled shrimp with lemon butter. I've never been to the other location, so I can't say how it compares, but this location does not deserve my hard earned money. read more

Probably the worst seafood I've eaten ever. I took maybe 3 bites of my seafood platter and couldn't even stomach the rest. So disappointed. Don't even waste your money. Service was good though. read more

This restaurant is a feast for the eyes. Raw edged cypress paneling, beautiful murals and artwork, eclectic fixtures, and a playground for the kids. Middendorf's is known for its thin fried catfish and it didn't disappoint. It was delicious. Mixed my tartar sauce with a little cocktail sauce and enjoyed every bite. read more

I wrote a review on the Food being cool and the RUDENESS of the greeter and NO RESPONSE from Managment. Is this a sign of just not Caring about people that patronize their business ?? All I expected was assurance that they would speak with the greeter and have them not make any Rude comments to their patrons and a apology. read more

Hostess said 45 mins, 1.5 hours later(understand) sat at the bar. 2 bartenders - running around with there heads chopped off, bar was disgusting, bartender didn't make 2 drinks the same, didn't shake the juices and watched 4 drinks sent back. Finally sat down, waiters was very nice. Asked for 2 unsweetened teas, got 2 sweet teas twice (I'm a diabetic). Orders appetizers gator bites (burnt) and crawfish cake (too much breading and no taste). Ordered main meal 1 thin catfish dinner with shrimp (nothing but grease when you bit into the fish and shrimp were cold) and 2 tenderloin catfish (fish was under cooked) and the fried were cold. Never eaten at a Middendorf, not sure if I ever will return read more

My first visit to Middendorfs and we chose to visit the new location in Slidell. The site is spacious, with plenty of parking and seating, nicely decorated with a patio for outdoor dining. We ate inside, and received very good service. However, that unfortunately did not make up for the so-so food. I found everything to be very salty, and I like a good amount of salt. I ordered the shrimp and crab gumbo, which was dark and a bit too tomato-y. The "crab" portion was a crab claw in the bowl. I thought the crab would be scattered throughout.... But again, it was very salty. I also had the broiled catfish with lump crab meat on top. Crab chunks were substantial, but had more of a fishy taste. Very salty dish also. And pricey. Run of the mill fries, coleslaw, and hush puppies rounded out the meal. Overall, the travel time and food doesn't warrant a return trip. Expected more, and unfortunately this will be a one-and-done. read more

Ordered the thick cat fish plate. The cat fish had no taste, fries no taste, hush puppies no taste, coleslaw no taste. A friend got the thin fish plate. It should be called thin breading plate cuz we could hardly find any pieces of fish inside the breading. read more

Excellent lunch and service! The catfish was as good as it gets and the shrimp remoulade was amazing. We will go back

We ate there on Sunday. we only waited about 20 minutes for a table even though it was packed with people. Our waitress was very nice and helpful. However, the food was not hot and it was very bland. The fries were terrible. I have had better seafood at a lot of other places. I will not be going back unless the food improves a lot. Very disappointed and not impressed. read more

My family and I have been going to the original Middendorf's in Manchac for generations. This location lives up to expectations. The thin catfish was delicious and fried to perfection and the service was friendly and good. I like that you can substitute French fries with potato salad, boiled spiced new potatoes or steamed vegetables. The food was not salty enough but that was easily corrected with salt and pepper shakers. There was also a shaker with cayenne pepper to make the food hotter if that is your taste. We are happy we no longer have to drive to Manchac and will definitely come back! read more

Just had the Middendorfs special thin catfish small, there was enough catfish for two meals but the taste was the same as you a get out of A box fish fry. The fries were slightly limp, The hush puppies had decent flavor but were hard as a rock. The best thing of the whole experience was the service our waitress was very mindful and on point that's the only reason why I tipped. read more

food is terrible! service was great but was not able to eat the food. appetizers were not great but the fried platter and softshell were inedible. Very overpriced, go anywhere else. read more

My husband, daughter, and I just left from having an early dinner and everything we had was great. My husband had the thick cut catfish, daughter had the thin cut and I had the boiled shrimp which is an appetizer along with boiled potatoes and a side of thin cut catfish to taste it. Everything was delicious and my daughter and I really loved their tarter sauce. Only thing lacking for any of us was the cocktail sauce which I am sure they keep mild for customers who do not like spicy food. We will definitely be back. We had waited for the opening rush of a new place to pass before giving them a try. So glad we waited and that we did not go off of other peoples reviews because I couldn't have been happier with my meal. I noticed also some of the reviewer mentioning another local place and comparing them and that is not fair. I say always try a place for yourself and not based on reviews since everyone has different tastes. read more

My family and I were very excited to see Middendorf's open a second location in Slidell as the one in Manshac is very good. We were sorely disappointed in the food! We had the fried shrimp, thin catfish, gumbo, Caesar shrimp salad and shared the "house made banana bread pudding with rum sauce". The fish and shrimp were bland, bland, bland. Not even a speck of seasoning to be found. The gumbo was ok, it is a tomato based gumbo, which we are not fans of and it is chunky. Some people prefer it that way, but not us. The salad.... a lot of dressing which made the lettuce soggy. We were expecting seasoned boiled shrimp, but the shrimp were small, and had no taste like they were boiled in plain water. The bread pudding was "custardy" and like everything else, no flavor to the rum sauce. Do not waste your money! read more

Went to Phil's tonite but 45 min wait so went to midendorfs, second trip there was no better than first visit which was bad, stuffed flounder with mostly bread and not much else, this time split a food platter with my wife. Shrimp crust tasted like flour and egg wash and falling off, little seasoning. Won't be going back. Should have drunk a couple of beers to kill time and waited that 45 min at the marina grill read more

Terrible terrible terrible. The gumbo taste like it came out of a can and tomato juice was added to the base. Chef boyardee came to mind when I tasted it. Nothing creole about it but maybe the creole tomatoes. The fish was ok and the shrimp was weird. You get better onion rings from out a hole in the wall bar. The waitress was super nice though. Food not worth the money you spend. Hope the menu changes or at least the recipes! read more

I was at the original Middendorf's just 2 months go and have been eating there for over 40 years so I think I can be pretty honest about a review. Went today, to the new location in Slidell, before 11:00 am, before any crowd. Sat outside which was great , there were 9 of us. Waiter was very sweet but very green. Heard they had trained for a month before opening so I was a little surprised at this. 2 People ordered the Shrimp Salad but.....it came with NO SHRIMP! When they told the waiter, who never realized this when he served it, he brought out a soup bowl of previously frozen shrimp and told them to add it to their salad! OMG! One person ordered the crab gumbo which came with NO RICE (a serious No No in LA!) but she still couldn't eat it because it tasted like tomato soup from a can and very bland! Others at the table tasted it and agreed. I ordered the shrimp and thin catfish combo plate (which I had ordered 2 months ago at the original location ) and it came with a good order of catfish but only 4 shrimp and about 5 french fries!! Hello! The coleslaw was tasteless too! Another order was shrimp sandwich on a bun which was also frozen shrimp and tasteless. Hello this is LA, not CA!!! I paid $17.95 for this plus tax. What a disappointment. I will give them about 6 months to work out the kitchen issues before I go back. I will give them another shot but only one - they have had 85 years to work out the bugs - no more slack from me! Meanwhile, go at your own wallets risk! I actually have a photo of the "salad shrimp" they brought but can't see a way to download it but trust me, it was lame! read more

Not so impressed today. The wife and I wanted a early dinner and said why not try the new place. The place is large and plenty of seating and space between tables. I ordered a cup of crab gumbo to start. The cup was small and the gumbo was more like soup. Not thick enough to be able to get a taste of crab. At over $5 a cup I'll skip it next time. I ordered the fried oysters and thin fried catfish. 6 small fried oysters and 3 very paper thin pieces of catfish laying on limp fries. The coleslaw had little flavor. Hush puppies were great. After eating what was good, I had a plate of fries and coleslaw left over. Felt cheated for paying that much for a small amount that was eatable. Wife asked if a side salad was available and it is not . $58 later and most of the food was not eaten. If I go back I will try another meal. Or skip it all together. Wait staff was great- she got the tip. Tip for the rest, lower the price a little, or better quality. Especially when you pay $20 a meal and you get a styrofoam cup of coleslaw that's not really flavored. read more

What the heck? What happened to this place? I have been going to the one in Manchac for decades. That location is rustic, warm and cozy. It feels like a Louisiana swamp restaurant. The one in Slidell is nothing like that. I went there for the first time last night. The food was mediocre at best. The lighting was sort of like a modern shopping mall. I seriously felt like I was in a police station having a detective question me with the lighting situation. They have LED lights with the 5000-6000k lumen day light setting. It just screams commercial restaurant. The place could be nice if it was completely re-done. They need to take examples from some of the country kitchen restaurants around. Similar to Cracker Barrel. If they just duplicated the setting in Manchac that would be wonderful. We got the Italian meatballs. It was garbage. You could tell it was commercially made. The cheese was totally processed and the dish was horrible. The gumbo was horrible. It tasted like watered down freezer commercial gumbo. The catfish was thin fried and it was the best thing there. That's why I gave three stars. The catfish was not as good as Manchac but it was still good. The fries were completely over done. It just seems like the kitchen staff don't care. The waitress was very nice. This place could be awesome if it was just like the Middendorf's in Manchac. I had high hopes. It just took me by surprise. I knew something was up when the parking lot was empty at dinner time. The whole time I was in there my wife kept telling me we should've gone to Texas roadhouse. What did you do Middendorf's? Did you sell out? The Slidell location is such a disappointment I don't have enough words to express it. Sad read more
