Although the scenery is breathtaking, the actual dining experience at Phil's Marina Cafe leaves much to be desired. We had to wait over 30 minutes for a table and another 20 minutes just to be served food. This place seems to be really popular among the locals but I was so unimpressed with the taste and portion sizes of the meals. I ordered the fried snapper as my entree but the sides were bigger than the main dish. Thankfully, one of those sides was the mac-and-cheese--a creamy and delicious bowl of goodness topped with that extra layer of golden brown cheese. The gouda grits was a close second with its buttery and simple execution of a classic Southern staple. But the actual fish itself was dry and unseasoned, and had to be aided by the accompanying tartar sauce. This is an interesting one....we picked this place based on stars and, late afternoon pre-dinner, it was a really fun, laid back, bay view restaurant. I believe that the fun vibe & cool view of the storm rolling in made me enjoy this place more than I ever would have, seeing past the dirty windows with greasy kid prints all over it (cleanliness is usually one of my tops!) and just "okay" food! The tuna (w/butter) was good, the 2 baked mushroom appetizer was okay but the 1.5 pounds royal reds, although edible, were very overcooked and needed lots of lemon/cocktail sauce to get down. I grew up with Gulf Coast seafood and it just wasn't all that great. What was great besides the vibe and the view was the Banana Bread Pudding w/Rum sauce - yum! Even our margarita was just okay. The food is hot and fresh, and portions are huge. I had the seafood platter. Be hungry, cause this is a massive portion. The shrimp was amazing and breaded nicely, catfish was clean and well breaded, clams were good and oysters had good flavor even though they were breaded. It's a nice restaurant on the banks of lake Pontchartrain . Service was a little slow, my waitress was too busy visiting with her regulars. After 35 minutes I called because I still hadn't gotten my order & was told Sorry we're to busy to bring it out. Every time I ask if it is a good time to order & have my order brought to me. They finally brought it out the food was ice cold cost me $57.00 & wasn't exactly what I ordered but I kept my mouth shut & paid & even gave a $5 tip. Then the lady inform me don't ask for this on Weekends & even times during the week as they only 3 people & they can't stop to accommodate me. I've been a regular customer for over 20 years even had family parties but no more. The food was unstable. We had to throw it away. We were looking to try another seafood restaurant on our way to the New Orleans airport so this was our first time at this place. We arrive at 11 when they open. There was already a line at the door. We tried a couple dozen raw oysters, crab claws, and crab cake. It was all delicious! I keep getting shells in my oysters but my husband did not so we will be back. It was probably a fluke. Food took forever to be served and our drink glasses sat empty for 25 minutes or more. The worst part was they charged us for an extra cocktail sauce that was in a 1 ounce plastic ramekin. Twice I've gotten fish dishes - once was fish tacos, and more recently the house special Mahi Marliene - where the fish was dry. I really dislike dry meat and fish, so maybe I'm more sensitive/picky about than average, but surely in a dish advertised as a house special, the fish shouldn't be dry. Yes, the stuffing and buttery spinach mostly offset the fish, but I shouldn't have had to rely on other components to offset the main component's shortcomings. I didn't give it a 5 star because that's reserved for excellence in every way, however it is a great family restaurant serving really good food at great prices. I have been there several times to meet up with childhood friends and we have always throughly enjoyed ourselves. There has been a time or two when the appetizers were late and came out almost at the same time as our entrees, a little frustrating but nothing unusual fora neighborhood restaurant. If you expect exceptional service you may want to go elsewhere. For a good meal, casual ambiance and can accept the 'not quite fine dining' experipence, I would definitely recommend. read more

Started with 12 oysters for $15, they tasted good but prepare for some shell in them (although isn't that part of the experience) they brought many lemons which was appreciated. This very nice restaurant is facing a waterway, and dock with many ships and boats. The restaurant was nautically themed decorated. Without the fishy smell when you walked in. I wish I knew our waitresses name. She was dark haired and extremely knowledgeable and one of the best waitresses I think I've ever had. She was fast and efficient and not intrusive. Can't ask for any better and she timed our food perfectly. So our first course was the fried gator bites. They were so light and so fluffy and so tender, possibly the best gator bites I've ever had. The gator was so tender. The salad was fresh and the dressing was nice. Unfortunately, the gumbo was over salted we could not even eat it. We told our waitress that we weren't trying to get out of paying for gumbo, but then it was too salty to eat. She took it off our bill anyway. The stuffed blue crab was absolutely delicious, wonderful stuffing with some andouille sausage,. The crème brûlée had a nice crunchy Brulé top. This was a very pleasurable dinner, you should seek it out if you're going for a date or just you want to get together with some friends. I visited Phil's Marina yesterday and the service was far less than expected. We sat in the patio area with a nice view of the water. We were seated quickly but waited an extended period to be helped. Waitress came and took drinks and we let her know that we've been sitting here for over 30 minutes and that everyone who was seated after us were working on appetizers.... And we don't even have drinks or water. She ignored us asked what we wanted. We proceeded to wait. It wasn't until the table next to us got dessert that we looked for the manager. The manager did not help the situation at all. She starts with checking the ticket and we can hear her from the computer say," it's only been 33 minutes." She approaches the table and tells us that it's been 33 minutes. That makes it even worse to let us know that our ticket was just submitted when we've been here for over an hour. No accountability whatsoever, no remorse. It was only three of us at the table, and we knew what we wanted. It should have been a smooth transaction. read more

What's going on at Phil's? I've been going to Phil's for years but the last few times has been less than desirable. We took some friends from GA last night and it was the worst Phil's experience yet. My Shrimp and Egg plant boat , as well as my eggplant appetizer was burnt. The Snapper Pontchartrain was dry and the stuffing was the consistency of an over cooked hamburger patty. The other two guest ordered the shrimp platters, even a chain restaurant like Popeyes can't mess that up, but they tried. The fries were limp and temped and looked like the leftover scraps from the last batch they fried. Well at least the service was good......wrong. I actually had to go to the bar myself and refill our drink orders with the exception of my friends Cosmopolitan which she said wasn't a Cosmopolitan, so she didn't even drink it. You need to step up your game Phil's or I wont be the last customer you lose. read more
