I ran over a tire tread on the freeway and a Google search recommended I take my car in for a Midas courtesy check any time after hitting road debris to make sure the undercarriage wasn't damaged. According to the Midas website, a courtesy check includes several undercarriage safety checklist items, so I made an appointment online for the following day. My appointment was approved within about twenty minutes of submitting it. I explained to the guy at the front that my car had had a slight, irregular tapping sound since the incident but that I'd found that the rubber piece under my bumper had been torn, which I was pretty sure was the source, and otherwise there didn't seem to be any issues, but I wanted the check up to see if everything else seemed ok. He said that because of the reported noise that there would have to be a test drive and they would charge for the inspection. I replied that I would just take my car home, but I had to clarify three times that I wasn't leaving my car. To be clear, if there was an issue noticed during the inspection, I would have used Midas to fix the problem, but I didn't appreciate being told that they had to perform a paid service that I didn't ask for; I wasn't asking for diagnostics, just a look over. The employee was courteous, and I'm sure he was just following his training, but it wasn't a good impression. These are the items that are looked at during a courtesy check, as quoted from the website: "Under-the-Vehicle Items Shocks & Struts Worn or badly leaking shocks and struts can cause braking problems and premature suspension wear. A cracked or broken mount will cause noise over bumps. Brake Line/Hoses Road conditions and undercarriage corrosion can cause cracks or wear in the steel lines and rubber hoses that carry brake fluid underneath your vehicle. A leaking brake line may cause loss of brake pressure to the entire braking system. Leaking fuel lines are potential safety hazards. Exhaust System Leaks, rattles, broken clamps or hangers are all potential exhaust system conditions. Midas La Mesa changed my oil on March 9, 2021. On March 11, 2021 my vehicles engine light came on. In addition, my vehicle was running odd after the service. I called the shop and advised them of the situation as soon as the light came on. They asked me to bring my vehicle in. Manuel L., the service adviser hooked up a scan tool and showed me that there was oxygen sensor codes and MAF sensor code. I advised him that I have never had any issues with my vehicle until after they performed the oil change. I also told him that I purchased my vehicle brand new in 2018 and have kept it well maintained. He told me there is nothing they could have done to cause this. That this was simply a coincidence. I expressed that they need to see what's wrong as my vehicle was running well before I brought it in. Reiterating, that I have never had any sort of check engine light or issues with my vehicle. Manuel L. then told me that this is a coincidence AND if I want them to conduct a diagnosis, it will cost me their hourly rate. This is unacceptable. Midas La Mesa needs to take some responsibility for this. I had a perfectly running vehicle, no leaks, no vibration, etc. I am not a happy customer. Now I am having to take my vehicle to Bob Stall Chevrolet (nearest Chevrolet Dealer to me) to see what is wrong with my car. Which has a cost of $170. Midas La Mesa is more than capable of doing the diagnostic themselves. That is why I took it back to them. They were the last to work on my vehicle before issues followed. Manuel L. was not apologetic or even entertaining the fact that they had anything to do with this. But yet, they do a "Midas Courtesy Check" of your vehicle and you can clearly see that the air filter was removed as it is imaged on the report. They were under the hood checking fluids, etc. They could have at least checked the areas they had put their hands on. Put it on the lift for any obvious signs of cause. This could be as simple as the air filter not being reset properly. Such a shame! NEVER USING THEM AGAIN! read more

My wife was charged $113.78 for a 3.9 quart oil change using synthetic oil. This was a discounted price after factoring in her $20.00 off coupon. When l called about the high price, I was told part of the high cost was due to my "European car." (My 2014 Volkswagen Jetta) Why the one star? Update: David K made it right and we are thankful for his quick reaction. My friend ordered tires for a Toyota Corolla... I can't imagine that they're actually special order tires but regardless nowhere on the contract or on the website does it say that there is a restocking fee. Manuel charged her 15% restocking fee when she canceled the order before the tires were ever even put on the vehicle. When I called and asked where this was in writing he said nowhere but he told her son verbally. I said I was going to be calling mitis consumer affairs and he said that I should do whatever I have to do. Feels like a case of taking advantage of a customer. My brake pedal was not holding so I figured something was going on in the master cylinder line as I'd had the the brake pads checked recently by another mechanic. Midas was busy but still worked me in for a system eval complete with pictures and suggestions. To fast forward, I had quite a bit of work done on the front end (all needed) to include the brake power booster, leaking master cylinder, struts, bushings, control arm, sway bar and wheel alignment to name a few. I also had an oil change. Had a hiccup on one part which was quickly resolved. I would give Jerry and his coworkers a 10 star rating if I could. I was also given a military veteran discount (yay! Thank you!) My 30 year old Honda Accord LX braking system is like new again and for much less than the dealership wanted. Customer service was great and I was tickled nothing else presented itself during "tear down" of the visually evident worn parts (all those replaced were the original 1993 parts). I'll be returning at manufacturer's maintenance intervals for recommended check ups. I would recommend more than one estimate before "buying" any repair work. I found the staff here to be kind, accommodating and knowledgeable. (And, quite honestly, I found the estimate to be a little less than i anticipated in today's economy.) read more

Backstory here: Little sister needed company in getting an oil change and had no clue know where to go. Drove us to a Jiffy Lube on El Cajon Blvd but left right away because they had atrocious customer service. SOO GLAD WE DID!! Googled the nearest oil change spot. Midas popped up and gave the store a call - I wanted to inquire if they accept coupons and they happily said yes and to check the Midas website. Upon arrival, they graciously accepted our coupon (she's a student on a strict budget) and welcomed us into their customer lobby where we had access to a tv, kuerig for hot drinks, and seats to relax. First time to this location and now we have our designated Car service spot. Id like to thank the team (Manuel, Scott and lastly Nick for the oil pan screw) at this location for taking great care of my little sister's Mazda 3. These guys are pros and know their business, looking out for you and your ride. Now when you go in, understand right off the bat that they're going to want to upsell you on something. Don't get all bent out of shape about it, because you know full well that all places do that, from the bookstore to the video store. Just accept that it is part of the game, but more importantly, pay attention. It is going to be valid information they're sharing with you, and might very well be applicable, so educate yourself first on what is needed, before you act like a sheep and hand over your benjamins. Went in for an oil change. Easy enough. They pulled the old oil filter off and spilled oil in the engine bay. Then watched the "tech" try to put the oil filter on for 10 minutes. The inspection gave things on my car the yellow mark as non urgent issues but then put notes on the bottom saying they were normal. Wouldn't recommend anyone to this place. Poor quality. read more

I left my car for an oil change and some gasket seal work. They left the car outside with the doors unlocked. After picking it up and getting it home I noticed razor slits on the passenger side door panel. I brought the car back to show David the manager the damage asking for repair. He smiled and said that it looked like sun damage and that sometimes they forget to lock the doors. He did not seem to care that my car was damaged and they were not going to fix it. I would give this place zero stars if I could. This place totally stripped my oil pan plug on my S2000 and took no accountability for it. My car is garaged and barely driven. There was never any leaks before they worked on it and after the fact, the oil was leaking profusely. I called them and I told them what had happened and their excuse was that it was already stripped and they took pictures beforehand. Edit: Lol,I'm cackling. For context I actually called the Midas on Convoy afterwards and they quoted me $40-50 depending on if they had to take of the bumper (sidenote: you don't). I was able to buy the replacement bulbs for $16 at the autoparts store and spent another 5 mins of my time twisting them into place. This place is a joke and the management is clearly extremely unprofessional. Don't come to this spot ! Only reason why I came here is because my car couldn't make it no where else. Had a emergency and had to hit the nearest mechanic near me .. unfortunately it happened to be this spot. At first everything seemed cool, hit me with a 5000$ bill but they had financing which I had no problem with. Signed up and got approved due to my credit being good. Said a couple days , but I guess parts were back orders so it took 3 weeks. No their fault so no worries. Me thinking i just financed 5000 damn dollars my car should be running perfect. I came here a couple weeks ago to get my oil change, brakes checked and serviced and new tires. I really thought I was going to spend a lot more than I did. For all 3 services plus an alignment for my Acura RDX came out to $1100. I love the fact that I was able to get all 3 things that I needed for my car in one place. The only reason they didn't get 5 stars is because the wait for my car was super long, about 6 hours and I waited at the store -- also my tires weren't in stock and needed to be ordered. So I walk up in there, $19.99 coupon in hand and I wait a bit before being helped. The dude behind the counter (Allen) is on the phone, so I wait patiently. A few minutes later I'm telling him what I need done. He was real nice, tells me it'll be 40 minutes max. An hour later I'm picking up my car. And I'm ready to hit the road. Brought my car in for an oil change about two months ago. The oil change was fine however when I got my car back the contents of my glovebox had been emptied all over my passenger floor. When I brought it to the attention of the person at the front desk the reaction was *shrug* "what can you do now?" I would really expect better customer service than that, especially since the technicians really did not need to go into the glovebox, at all. Not only that, but I had several questions regarding my oil change and they were completely unhelpful.
