I've been on PTO for the past few days...just burning up time I have to burn before the end of the first quarter so I don't lose it. No big plans. Just spending some time with the kids, parents, and kicking around. On the way home from my parents' place on Tuesday evening I had a check engine light come on up by Stanhope on Hwy 17. I still had to take the kids home to their mom's (near Norwalk) and then drive back to my place in Clive. It was solid...not blinking...so it probably wasn't anything catastrophic. I've blown two head gaskets in my past and seized up one engine so I can say that my butthole puckered up just a little the rest of that ride home (about 80 miles in total were left to go). I got home and started stressing a little, but got to sleep. The next morning I started checking into what I needed to do. I found online that O'Reilly's will do free code checks on check engine lights. I showered up, got dressed and headed that way. The guys at the Clive location were great. Ran the codes and gave me a print out. He did tell me that the codes generated were sometimes general and not 100% accurate. They won't clear the warning so that light stays on...they just check the codes for you. It was showing problems with my emissions/catalytic converter. A quick search showed that replacing a catalytic converters is about $1,300 in parts and labor. Ugh. I took the print out to the Midas in Clive. The guy at the front desk was great. He looked at the print out. Made it clear that emissions do involve the catalytic converters, but there are other things like O2 sensors, etc. in play. He asked me the year and miles of the car and then he laughed and said it was highly unlikely that it was my catalytic converter. He asked me if I knew how to clear the check engine light. I'd already Googled that. Remove the negative battery connection for a couple of minutes and hook it back up on a GMC vehicle. He told me to do that and he also asked if I ran ethanol. I do. He recommended getting a good fuel additive, filling up with Premium for a couple of tanks, and getting it out of town and to "drive it like I stole it." Lol He said if the light did come back on to bring it in and the would hook it up and dig in deeper, but he didn't want me to waste my money. That's important to me too! I was kind of taken aback. It's not often right now that you find great people who provide good customer service and think about you more than just with their own wallet in mind. Or at least it kind of seems like it's less often than it used to be... The light hasn't come back on and I hope it stays that way. I didn't put a lot of miles on yesterday, but I put quite a few miles on today in town, on highways, and the interstate. I'm hoping it stays that way if the good Lord is willing and the creek don't rise... I appreciate the guys at both O'Reilly's (Clive) and Midas (Clive). It was nice to deal with people who weren't going for an immediate cash grab... I know they really helped relax me when my anxiety was kicking in thinking worst case scenarios. As an added note... A lot of farmers in rural Iowa are burning off parts of their land and ditches right now. I ran through some really heavy smoke on the way home. In hindsight the heaviest was North of Stanhope. I read online that smoke from wildfires etc. can sometimes impact your car's sensors... Could have just been a coincidence too. read more

Used to be my go to spot for all things needed on my cars. Appears leadership changed and could tell as service not the same. Setup time for oil change week in advance confirmed at 945a. Show up at 935a am told there are 3 people ahead of me will be 1.5 to 2hr wait. What's the point of setting up an appointment that gets confirmed by the store only to be told it's a 2 hour wait before they can start. Do yourself a favor drive two blocks up to Jiffy Lube be in and out in 15 minutes. read more

I took my car in at 11:30 AM. As per my appointment. When I made the appointment I indicated I would be waiting for my car. At twelve forty My car had not been looked at so I finally got someone to pick me up. I was told that the time my car would be next. I went to lunch and at one I called to check on my car. I was told they was being looked at. And someone would call me back in a few minutes. 40 minutes later, someone called me and told me. The prices which were inflated and tried to upsell me on several different things from my car. I told the Tech that I wanted nothing but my brakes and rotors. Please and that I wanted the cheaper rotors. He was very confrontational and insisted. I needed the other things he was trying to sell me. I told him no I only want cheaper rotors. He said he would call me back. He called me back in a few minutes and the rotors were cheaper. He said he was working on my brakes right now. Two hours later at four p m I called to check to see if I could come and get my car. He said it was not done but it be done by the time they closed. Ask why I had an appointment in the morning if they could not work on my car. He started getting angry and saying that he was doing the best he could, and he had a bunch of cars to work on, and he had guys that didn't come to work and excuse him. And then he hung up on me! I normally take my car to the dealership for anything service related. My check engine light came on and I wanted to try somewhere closer in proximity. My significant other always goes to Midas so I decided to give them a shot and I'm so glad I did! The other 5 star reviews posted are a solid representation of the service I experienced today. I worked with Brandon & Jason, both are personable and customer friendly. I am very critical of auto repair/service shops because prior experience has taught me that if there is an inch of an advantage to be taken, it will be. That is not at all what I experienced today, in fact far from it. Luckily, I just needed an oil change today but had that not been the case, I trust that whatever issue could have been and will be in the future, I will not be swindled here. This is a great place to get your vehicle serviced. These guys are honest, respectful of customer time, polite, professional and knowledgeable. Customer service is something that actually happens here! They don't try to give you the runaround and sell you a bunch of extra stuff. I very much like that the waiting area is completely open to the shop bay area - you can see the work being done. If they want to show you anything, they escort you back to show you on your vehicle. I had a scary experience....my brakes on my Escalade after no warning went out. Luckily, at least I thought at the time, it was in front of a Midas. Had several calls back and forth with Brandon and Steve, agreeing on getting my Escalade back to be safe. I went in on Friday evening to pick it up, Steve calling saying it was done and good to go. That everything went well, brakes were working and car was safe and good to go. I pay the $1200 and jump in WITH MY KIDS, and head down the road. Confident that my car was safe and FIXED. As I try to stop at the first stop light I come to MY BRAKES GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I can't stop, my kids are screaming and I am in a panic. I had to throw it in 1st gear and use the emergency brake. I call my husband, who is very unhappy, because I am not going another foot in this car with my kids. I call Steve it goes to voicemail. I made it to a parking lot, hit the curb as my brakes go out once again. My kids are upset, I am crying. We use the emergency brake and 1st gear to limp it back to Midas. I ask them why wasn't my car test drove and what a huge liability. I was told 'yep we should of' .....I am so thankful I didn't kill someone or that my kids didn't get hurt. I have ran through every horrible scenario that could of happened, none being good. I will never use this Midas again. I called my regular mechanic to look over the car before it is driven any more. I just can't get over what happen. I just don't want this to happen to anyone else. On a side note. They were closing their doors at 5:30 when it said they were open till 6 and obviously stopped answering calls. Also the lobby smells like an ash tray! Super unhappy and disappointed. Not the type of person to leave reviews... But this is something worth sharing. Was in a hurry and went in for oil change and tire rotation, but the mechanic forgot to rotate my tires. Brandon, the manager was super nice and apologized and offered to throw the car back on and do it. Because I was in a hurry I declined and left a bit frustrated that I had waited 45 minutes to not have completed what I was told would be completed. I called back after leaving to express my frustration and ask for some sort of discount. With NO questioning, and LOTS of apologies I was refunded the entire thing. They made a mistake, recognized it, apologized repeatedly, and made it right. GREAT to know people working for a big company like this are still willing to treat customers like this. This place is hands down the best place to get your vehicle worked on. Compared to other shops in the metro, Midas is fantastic. From the wonderful customer service to the fair prices, they are your go to guys. The Owner/Manger Brandon is the best guy, so nice and friendly. They allow you to come out to their garage and show you what is wrong with your car rather than just telling you, and hoping you believe them. They don't pressure you into doing anything you don't want to do at that time. They don't tell you something is wrong when it isn't. They thought I needed a new wheel barring for my front tire, upon looking at it further, they determined that I did not. They aren't going to screw you over, they won't lie to you just to make a couple hundred dollars. They are honest, I will never take my car anywhere else ever again. read more

After my car being in the shop at meineke for almost 2 weeks I finally got it back and it was worse then it was before. I called Midas on my way home and told them about the issues. They told me to bring it straight in and they would see what they could figure out so I turned around and headed straight to Midas. This was on a Friday around 5 and they closed at 6. After looking it over they told me they couldn't get to it that day to tear it apart but they would have it done for sure by Monday. Brandon the manager handed me keys to the shop car and told me to keep it until they were done. This was much better then my previous shop as they had just left me without a car for 2 weeks. I received a call Monday morning telling me what the other shop had messed up and they told me no matter the job they would be done today. I received a call on Monday evening around 5 to tell me to come in around 6 pm because they were just going to stay and finish it up. Mind you the shop closes at 6 so they just needed me there to pay by 6 so they could get everything else closed up. It ended up taking them until 7 to get done. I couldn't believe they stayed that late just to fix my car. Brandon the manager and John the mechanic were awesome. They got me fixed up and back on the road! I will be back for any job I can't handle on my own. Thank you midas! read more
