They did my roof on a new construction 4 years ago. Slate. Cost a fortune. Was ok to work with during the process - visited a few times and understood my needs and design criteria. Not the friendliest person on the planet. Contract says warranty for 10 years. Slate tiles are shedding off the house like a maple tree in winter. Left three messages for Matt. Mid Peninsula put our roof on about 14 years ago and it went very well because it was through our then contractor who had a relationship with the owners. They came back a few years ago to do repair work and installed some vents in the roof. The vents they installed are now leaking. They did send someone over a few weeks ago to look at the roof but then never sent an estimate or called to give me any info on the issue. I've called at least 4 times and left messages for Matt but no one has called me back. I emailed Ron and never heard back. This is not how repeat customers should be treated. I understand they are busy but to not even return a phone call is so unprofessional. Very disappointing customer service. If you could rate a company with negative stars, this one would get minus 5 stars. Absolutely miserable customer engagement. We called them 4 times last year to repair our tile roof before they finally came out to give an estimate (we should have known better at this point). We heard nothing for weeks, then finally got in touch and they told us that the had lost the estimate. They finally found it, and we scheduled a repair date. They never showed up and we got no reply after repeated calls. We just make one last attempt via phone (spoke with phone rep) and via email, but it's been a week with no reply. We have been patient beyond reason. Stay away from this company, at this point I would not hire them to re-roof a discarded dollhouse. read more

Terrible customer service! Good luck if you have work done by this firm as once they receive the final payment, just don't have any issues with your roof. They will ignore your calls and are not responsive as my wife and I have been calling them for the past 3 months to attend to an issue with some slate tiles that are hanging down and are a hazard as they are ready to fall to the ground at any point. The receptionist will apologize and say that she will put your message on the bosses table and have him call you to set something up, only to wait days and weeks before you call them again and again only to get the same message. I have not received a response back as of today. Our roof is an all slate roof that cost us over $120,000 and is under their warranty! Consumer beware as they will not respond or honor their word! Not sure how much they pay to get their supposed diamond certification. Total scam! read more

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. If your time and money is valuable to you, do not do business with this company. They don't respect either. Here's my tale... Years ago (14?) we hired Mid Peninsula Roofing to re-roof our home. They put on new cedar shingles and beautiful copper gutters. It looked good to me - but what do I know? The city of San Mateo sent one of the building inspectors over to sign off that the job had been completed. All was well, so I thought. A year goes by and my neighbor is re-roofing. I come home one day and one of the guys working on their roof yells to me that I have a problem around my chimney. He comes off the roof and asks me who put our roof on. I told him, Mid Peninsula, and he half laughed half exhaled because he was a bit worried it was his company may have done it. As it turns out, Mid Peninsula never put flashing around my chimney. For one year, rain water was going straight down the outside of my chimney and into the walls of my home. This was back when it actually rained here. The roofer told me to call them and tell them to get back and fix it ASAP. I did and they did respond and came and put flashing around the chimney. I then called the city and asked how could an inspector sign off on a job that clearly wasn't completed.. They, of course, had no explanation and that then set in my head that the permit process in this city is a joke and is just a revenue stream - but THAT conversation is for another day. In any event, I was incredibly grateful for the roofer next door for spotting the mistake and telling me. Flash forward 14 years and we have a huge leak in a part of the house which was not re-roofed prior. It was an addition put on by previous owners and the roof was done in a fake slate which was supposed to last forever. Ha! Anyway, our roof is leaking and we clearly have a problem so I call Izmirian (who caught the mistake of no flashing around our chimney) and Mid Peninsula. Why did I call them again you ask, because I am an idiot. No other explanation needed. I received two bids. Izmirian was higher which I later found out was because they actually use Union workers (something I wish I had know prior but that's my fault for not asking). I STUPIDLY decide to go with Mid Peninsula Roofing. Twice I received a phone call telling me the roofers would be there Monday morning bright and early. Both times they never showed up. Not a big deal EXCEPT our master bathroom shower had a window which is parallel to the roof which was being replaced. I did not want to be in the shower when these guys were on my roof for obvious reasons. So, expecting them to show up when they said they would, I got up extra early to shower, etc. No shows. Twice. FINALLY they actually show up when they say they would (3rd time is the charm), get the roof done, replaced the gutters and all looks great (and smells good too - LOVE the smell of cedar) until the first rain of the season. The roof leaked. Again. I am not happy. After having the sheet rock replaced where the leak I had painters scheduled THAT week to come and repaint and now the leak is back and there is a swimming pool where my kitchen table sits. I call Mid Peninsula. Matt, the owner, calls me back the next day telling me it is impossible that the roof is leaking, etc., and he'll send out his "best guy". The Best Guy comes a few days later, gets up on the roof, looks around and then tells me he thinks it is the skylight. He caulks and does something else and tells me to call him directly if when it rains next the leak comes back. Well, it did come back. And I did call. And he didn't call me back. So, I call the main number and ask for a return phone call. A week goes by and I call again and ask for a return phone call. NO CALL BACK. Nothing. Zip. Zero. In the meantime, I have a friend who is a builder come and look at the situation. He tells me that it isn't the roof but the skylight and the skylight needs to be replaced. Oh, and you just wasted $6k re-roofing when you didn't need to. He also told me the roofers should be able to replace the skylights and given that they did the roof, they know what they did and what they used up there and to go back to them and hire them to replace the skylights. Well, that isn't easy to do with THEY DON'T RETURN PHONE CALLS. I'm not accusing Mid Peninsula of knowing the problem was the skylight and not the roof but you'd think that maybe at one point someone might have brought that up. Since they decided not to return ANY of my calls my business is going elsewhere - to the company I should have hired to begin with - IZMIRIAN. Moral of the story: DO NOT HIRE THESE PEOPLE, listen to your gut and learn from my mistake. We will have to re-roof the remainder of the house in a year or two and guess who will NOT get my money? From what I hear, a very good reputation. My next door neighbor spoke highly of them, strongly recommended them and gave me the name and number of the owner. HOWEVER, my experience was quite frustrating. I had a small roof problem causing a leak. I contacted Mid Peninsula during the dry season (July/August). They came out, diagnosed the problem and vowed to return to make a quick fix. Despite repeated calls (four) on my part, no show. I work mostly from home and was very available. We discussed and then the manager/owner (couldn't tell) agreed to call me back "first thing" the next morning, between 7 and 8AM so he can tell me what time this day his workers will be able to come. $175 per hour for 2 guys. 8AM and no call. At 8:15 I call and I get someone who says they'll call me back. 30 minutes later and no call back. I call again and they tell me and tell me they can't talk to me.. and I have to wait..I ask if I'm on the schedule for today at all and "they don't know". Still waiting and no answer. Had the same bad experience as Dennis M. from Redwood City (see below). They came out for a roof inspection. I have not heard from them since. My realtor and I both tried to contact them for over 2 weeks straight and the secretary only tells me that Matt will call me back. Did not get any phone calls for a long tie. Then finally, Matt did call me back, however, he said that Joaquin, the guy who did the roof inspection does not remember the job at all and therefore he did not write a report. Matt said he will talk to Joaquin and will get back to me. I never got a phone call back. If they lost the report, I wish they didn't waste my time and told me so or came out once again to do the inspection. However, they for some reason avoid me and do not return calls. I called every day! I did use this company several years ago to replace the entire roof ($50,000 job!) and that's why I am very very disappointed to see how they treat their clients after they get their money. I will definitely not use them again or recommend them to a friends simply because if you have any issues or concerns or needs after you paid them, good luck getting a hold of them. read more

Beware of this roofing company. They replaced our roof about four years ago and now it developed a leak in the flashing with the chimney. They came to my house twice to determine where the leak was coming from and then they never returned. The owner Matt, is not good in keeping his word. He repeatedly said he would send some one over to fix it but it never happened. After a while he never returned my phone calls. The bottom line is that this roofing company will replace your roof for lots of $$$$$ but when a problem develops don't count on them to help you. Folks, beware! Mid Peninsula was recommend by two companies that worked on our home. They came out for an estimate, measured and said we would have it by the following day via email. No email came. I called back several times that week and was repeatedly told it was coming soon. A few days later I received a note in the mail from Matt the owner saying their schedule is full and they can't provide estimates at this time. Advice to Matt: Don't waste people's time by coming out in the first place. Assuming you do, don't delay a week with the phone operators giving bad information. Assuming you do, have the courtesy to call the home owner rather than having the secretary send the form note. Assuming you send the form note, consider recommending an alternative roofing company so the home owner isn't starting from scratch after you wasted a week+ of their time. read more

We had our shake roof replaced by Mid-Peninsula and we were very pleased with the quality of his work. Matt was recommended by a neighbor and has re-roofed many of the houses in our neighborhood. Reasons for the five star review: 1. When you switch from shake to composite, your house will become hotter due to the composite shingles. Matt was the only roofer to offer two additional solutions to reduce the heat besides increasing ventilation in the attic. He recommended special insulation on one side of the house and a special aluminum treated board for another side to help cool the house down. A neighbor told me that her house is 70% cooler in the summers after Matt replaced her roof and installed solar-powered attic fans. 2. We had four bids and Matt's was highly competitive. Good value for your money. 3. Matt helped us select the right shingles for our house. For example, Matt recommended the TL shingles which have more shape to hide the inconsistencies in our roof. He also recommended the nicer shingles because you can see our roof from the street--there's no point in spending money on the nicer shingles if no one can see your roof. We're very pleased with the color and selection. 4. The roofers were quick and polite. Our roof was finished in 4 days. They even swept the leaves from the walkway and porch. 5. The roof looks great--it looks professional and clean. They spray painted the pipes and extra sidings the same color as the shingles so that the entire roof is uniform and one color. I noticed that not all roofers pay attention to those tiny details--some of the houses have silver-colored gutters and pipes which glare in contrast to the dark shingles on the roof, so be careful about which roofer you select. 6. He tarped up our leaking roof for free during the rainy season. 7. They were able to quickly reroof our house after we agreed to the bid. Matt has a large group of about 40 roofers, so you won't need to wait. Another smaller roofer company was so over-booked that we would have had to wait 3-4 weeks. 8. Matt was very pleasant to work with. He was prompt and quickly responded to our calls. 9. Make sure that you pick a roofer who has worked in your area and knows how to get the permit. Matt works from Millbrae to Los Altos Hills. 10. Because Matt had roofed many houses in our neighborhood, we could visit nearby neighbors houses and compare their roofs and shingles. Good luck finding a roofer--make sure that you consider every possible solution that can keep your house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Some tips and what we learned: Walk around your neighborhood and compare roofs--see which shingles you like and don't like. From my walks, I noticed that old wood shake looks the best, but new wood shake looks the worst-- It fades and wrinkles. Pick a shingle color that contrasts with the color of your house--without contrast your house will look washed out. One neighbor has tiles which we thought looked nice. But she complained that the tiles crack easily when you walk on the roof and it is slippery--she's planning on switching to composite. read more

Matt, Joaquin and Jorge (demo) are top notch gentlemen. As matter of fact the whole team that showed up to take care of the roof was great! Pricing was the best out of the 4 bids we received. They are clean and highly professional. I was speaking with Jorge outside my house when a small piece of my old roof fell behind my bushes. He politely said "excuse me" and quickly went behind the bushes to pick it up and tossed into the back of the truck. Now that's how clean they are when doing the demolition. That piece of old roof was not visible where it landed, so it could have been left there. Jorge made sure that my house was left like no one had been there tearing up my roof. Joaquin has made a lasting impression on us. He was on site making sure things went smoothly and once everything was done, he came back to make sure everything was to our liking. He took care of some flashing issue that was left from the previous owner and offered a few suggestions that I can do to improve the function of my house and all with a smile. I would highly recommend this company to anyone. Whether the project is small or large, I sure MPR will handle it. We just had a new roof put on, and Matt and his team at Mid Peninsula did a great job. We took a few weeks to decide on a roof style and Matt had his team come over and tarp our trouble area on our old roof, which held us over during the very rainy weather we had in March. They moved quickly and were very clean, which are important when installing a roof. They even fully tarped my garage because we had to move so quickly between rain storms, we could not completely clear out our garage, so they literally put a drop ceiling in our garage and kept all our stuff clean. They even put back my boxes that were in a small attic area. I would recommend Mid Peninsula Roofing as a company that I would work with again, which I hope will not be for another 30 years! read more

After interviewing eight roofing companies, I chose Mid Peninsula. I spent many hours checking out references and reviewing previous jobs of different roofing companies before making my decision. I found Matt to be extremely professional from the time of the consultation to the completion of the project. Matt was patent and knowledgeable; but not over-bearing in his guidance. His crews were competent, respectful, worked hard, and arrived daily on time! There was a time-schedule and it was impeccably observed. I had been concerned about the care of the garden; but each day everything was left intact and the garden was preserved. The quality of their products and workmanship is very high. I chose a wood shake roof and complete gutters and downspouts. I am very pleased with the end result. Winter has yet to arrive; but I fully trust Matt to follow through and correct any problems if necessary. Mid-Peninsula replaced my roof earlier this year. I based my rating on: 1. A reasonable price, compared to bids from 4 other roofers. 2. Speed - they had a well-coordinated set of crews working on my project so that they were in and out quickly. 3. Extra work - they gave me a fair price for the dry rot they discovered and didn't nickel and dime me on a few other extras that emerged 4. Good quality product - although I haven't wintered yet, the work they did looks really nice. 5. Cleanliness - they were really good about cleaning up after themselves every day. Our house in Palo Alto presented a few challenges: steep gambrel (Dutch) roof, redwood gutters, copper flashings, lots of plants, and mature trees restricting access. Invited bids from four roofers; only Joaquin from Mid Peninsula Roofing said 'no problem'. My wife was unsure of her material choice, so Matt took us to a house in Woodside they had recently completed using the same material. The MPR crew set up scaffolding without damaging anything (well, they asked permission to squash one square foot of green onions in our kitchen garden). All work was completed in one week by courteous, competent workmen. Any debris was cleaned up at the end of each day. At the end, they went around with a magnet on a string to find any stray nails. The roof looks great! There were no extra charges. My wife and I are completely satisfied with MPR. By the way, MPR was the lowest of the bids, although we didn't choose them based on cost. read more

Their team was extremely professional, meticulous, and a pleasure to work with. Our job was very detailed oriented and challenging given the old style of our house, the preexisting asbestos roof, and the steep pitch and they handled it all beautifully. I just got a new TPO roof. I can't say enough about the amazing job the Mid Pen team did. From the first contact I had until the final walkthough the whole thing went so smoothly. I highly highly recommend Mid Peninsula Roofing. I couldn't have made a better choice. I worked with Ron, who is the VP of roofing division and President of solar division. His personal attention and time was so refreshing (and needed since getting a new roof done is stressful and something you usually know nothing about). The best of the whole experience - the attention to detail and how CLEAN my home was left each day. You wouldn't even know anything was happening at then end of the day. I had read horror stories about roofers leaving homes a giant mess and refusing to come back and clean it. Not here...they made a point of tarping everything including my driveway where the truck was parked. Then they cleaned up the entire perimeter each day so there was not a spec of dirt left. Ron and his men did a terrific job on our new roof. They did exactly what their quote and contract said they would do and were very professional and friendly. They did an amazingly professional job stripping off the old shingles, adding a plywood sheath, adding vents, and installing new shingles, and they finished faster than they expected. I am very disappointed with Mid Peninsula Roofing. The Company did a fine job putting a slate roof on our 7000 Sq foot Hillsborough home 14 years ago, but whenever we've had an issue since, they're a NO SHOW. We had a small leak about a month ago and, after several phone calls and several promises that I'd be hearing from them, weeks have gone by without a word. The same thing happened last year. Mid Peninsula Roofing installed a slate roof on my estate sized home in Hillsborough in 2004. The owner, Matt, provided guidance and advice on not only the best materials and approach to installing the roof, but he also went out of his way to help me with other areas of my home building project. Our roof went on beautifully, and we enjoyed compliments on the roof for many years. Matt even went out of his way to repair a chimney leak problem which was caused by the general contractor, not even part of Matt's roofing installation. I am now in the process of building another Hillsborough home, and I thought it was interesting that not only was Matt my first and only phone call for the roof installation, he was the first recommendation from every person in the construction business that I have spoken with. More specifically, when people in the construction business see the complexity and steepness of my roof, the suggestion has been to call Matt because "He is by far the best in the area." Matt continues to help with suggestions and ideas to help make the roof a real asset to the house. I have noticed a couple not-so-positive comments from individuals on this site, however, I find it interesting that the comments from professional builders are all extremely positive. read more

Mid Peninsula did a great job for us in San Carlos. We got a new composite roof and they also arranged, at our request, for an insulation company to come out and insulate our attic with a foam insulation while the roof was open. We really appreciated the care they took in putting up a scaffolding to demolish our old roof so that our driveway pavers would not be disturbed. They also rebuilt our chimney and re-enforced our skylights. I worked with company Vice-President Ron Stahl before, during and after the job. Anytime I had a question or a request he was there to take care of it. He would return my calls immediately and quickly take action. A great guy! It has taken me a few months to write this but here we go. I should have read reviews because the negative feedback I am reading rings true to me. We hire this roofing company to be honest because they were one of the few who called me back and came out for an estimate. Folks are busy with a lot of work clearly. The rep who came out was very polite and nice. But that is where the positive ended. I will cut to the chase. 1. They do not return phone calls. 2. They do not communicate. 3. They lie. 4. They are grotesquely unprofessional. 5. The own is one of the most verbally abusive people I have ever come across in a professional environment. I have remodeled and owned three homes. Our current home was gutted and a year later we did the re-roof so for me to say this was the worst service provider....is significant. I had my general contractor managing the project for me and asking legitimate questions. Our home is on a steep hill and a gamble roof so it was a bit complicated. The guys doing the demo and re-roof did not protect exposed electrical wires as they are required amongst other things. We simply checked in every once in awhile and that is my right. This home in question is a 2 million dollar home and I have a right to protect my investment. mid project no one showed up one day and we called to find out why or what the schedule was. As I said, there was never any communication. About anything. Well apparently our calling really upset them and the owner Matt Greening jumped to a lot of conclusions, called me back and screamed and yelled at me in such an abusive manner I had to pull my car over and burst into tears. I was shocked. I had NO idea who he was. I had never spoken to him and he made no introduction. The receptionist (who is an idiot) conveyed that were angry no one was there. I was angry there was no communication. I was ripped into and told that he has done this a long time and his crew is working like crazy etc. He literally tore my head off. Then he said he is not responsible for my wiring (which is not true). There was no resolution, there was no discussion, there was no "customer may have a point or customer is right". There was abuse. The rep whom I suppose was to be our point of contact went on vacation and said he told us but he never did. There was a lot of lying and there was a lot of BS. There was a half hearted fake apology later but far too little far too late. The crew also damaged my back deck (which they compensated me for) but they also charged me $850 for stucco work for which NO CHANGE ORDER was given to me. They just billed me in the end without my ever signing any change order. Our roof looks great. But the lack of communication and the unprofessionalism were unacceptable. Go elsewhere. Seriously. Update: my new roof leaked due to poor workmanship. They did fix the roof. My bathroom flooded. So far they don't want to pay for it and are trying to make me absorb the cost (not going to happen). read more

I can't say anything about the quality of their work-because they never gave me their estimate, despite repeated requests. Here's the scoop: my neighbor referred me to them for a little leak we have in our skylight. Joaquin and one other worker came out as scheduled and he told me he would send me an estimate in a few days. I followed up a day past the promised date and every day thereafter for a week. After three days I was told that my quote had gotten mixed up with my neighbor's file. I figured that once they had figured that out, they would send me the quote, but nope, I never got it, even after two more calls. It has now been three weeks and I have officially given up. I guess I join Elena K. and Dennis M in the frustration pool. I wish they would have just told me my small job wasn't worth their time rather than have me waiting around and wasting my time. read more

I had Mid Peninsula replace my 1920's red tile roof. Joaquin and his crew did an outstanding job. They were professional and clean (even tarped my flowerbeds for protection). The crew very carefully stacked my almost 100 year old irreplacable roof tiles without breaking one while they installed a new membrane. They even came back on a Saturday morning to complete my job. Mid Peninsula put a new roof and gutters on my house in May. I am belated in giving them the praise they deserve for a job well done! The owner, Matt, was very responsive to my questions the entire way and even asked if they could work on a Saturday to get my job done sooner, which greatly helped me since I told him I had company due. Most importantly, all of his employees were very friendly, courteous, and professional. This was reassuring since they were all over my house on scaffolding while the work was being performed. With them all being so nice, I never felt uncomfortable. As well, they always kept me informed about the next step in the process and cleaned up the debris each day before they left. Mid Peninsula put on a new roof for me six years ago. Over this weekend, with the heavy rains, a leak developed in my bathroom. They came out immediately following my call (on what had to be a very busy day for them), inspected the roof and located the problem (a huge clog of pine needles causing water to back up under the shingles).
