Will was amazing. I came in with a huge picture of my son that I thought I could get custom framed, but it was way more expensive than I thought. He helped me to downsize the poster and frame it for me, and I'm sure I took him away from other work. Will I really appreciate you. Thank you so much for your help!

Michaels was our savior during COVID when a majority of us needed things to fill our time and keep us from going stir crazy. It's a crafters paradise where you can let your creativity and imagination run wild. You can find supplies for painting, knitting, cross stitch and bead making. There's kid craft kits and you can also find nice seasonal home décor too. Honestly, the possibilities are endless. It's a place for brides, or frankly anyone, to get their DIY on and I love how they offer crafting classes (both in person and online). Some of their classes are free of charge too. Check out their website to see their current offerings. My last visit in, I was searching for supplies to create my flower crown for a Renaissance Fair we attended. I found a DIY tutorial online, got inspired and drove over to Michaels. I was able to find everything I need at this location and started working away when I got home. I finished my flower crown in about an hour and had enough floral to make a matching boutonniere. I love going to Michaels and if you sign up onsite or online, they offer coupons on the regular for their items. Pro tip: Go right after Christmas and pick up some cards and gift wrap. They have good discounts.

Easy web pickup. They have cubby holes with your initial and you pick up your order. Time saver.

Michael's always seems to stock whatever art supply I need... and more. Well organized, great staff, broad selection. Love this store.

    s. It's self checkout here these days and like in a Walgreens or ice cream shop, the customers can come and go here in big cluster

It's a little out of the way, and it's a bit of a jumble. Most of these supplies look as though they sat in a warehouse for a long time. You have to be willing to look and search. I'm pretty craft-compulsive, and I bought nothing. Nothing. There were some (longtime?) customers in the store so they must know what they want. I was able to go down aisles, wander down corridors freely and no one bothered me. I suppose if I asked for help I would have gotten it. Sorry but this was not my vibe.

That said, it's a bit disheveled and dim; you're not in a Michael's. But if you are willing to poke around you, are sure to find some treasure! It's a good thing for GPS because the location is slightly hard to find, but gladly the nondescript building does have a big sign on it, the address is posted on a sign near the street, and the aqua blue door are all things to look for. Worth the drive!

I really like an old fashioned multi hobby heavy on trains with expert repair service but with really nice and helpful knowledgeable trustworthy and respectful employees. I have just described Desplaines Hobby Shop. What you give up with a shop like this is any discount which is the price you pay for a really good hobby shop with trains stocked in depth. What you gain is the kind of shop that you can refer friends and families to and know that they will always be treated with respect and given accurate advice and guidance on trains regardless of their level of knowledge in the hobby. I have purchased both brass and plastic from them as well as modeling supplies. Their repair service is top flight and in fact they will often tell you how you can fix your problem yourself absolutely gratis. Without a doubt this is the one and only hobby shop I patronize and would recommend it to anyone. They are a monument to the days when Chicago was full of great hobby shops like Hobby City, Al's and Chicagoland that are all gone, Des Plaines Hobby is the last great hobby shop standing

I recently moved back into the area, and was looking for paint for a couple of model projects. Judging by their website, I was under the impression that they were mainly trains, but they had the paint I was looking for, so I stopped in and was pleasantly surprised to see that they carried a wide selection of of other items including plastic model kits. The staff was very courteous and helpful, especially the older gentleman who brought me a shopping basket when he saw the growing number of paint bottles I was holding. As it turned out, they were having a store wide sale which meant I was able to get what I needed for a savings on what I had expected to pay when I walked in the door. I will definitely be returning.

This is a nice little store in downtown Skokie. Prices are fair and employees have always been…read morefriendly and you can tell they really enjoy the hobby. I've been going here for the past year and have mostly had good experiences. The reason for three stars is because the one time I tried to sell my old binder of Pokemon cards (which admittedly I did not know a lot about) it seemed like they tried to take advantage of the fact that I wasn't knowledgeable. I say that because they offered me $100 for the whole binder - which had a base set holo Charizard and a lot of other base set cards. I ended up selling just that Charizard for $300 on eBay, and a handful of the other ones for $40-60 as well. The $100 offer was quite insulting, and after doing more research it really felt like they were trying to take me for a ride. I know card shops have to make money but to offer $100 for the whole binder when I sold one card for triple that amount is pretty insane. When I asked the employee how he got to that value he just said "a lot of these cards aren't in good condition", and didn't really elaborate after that. Will definitely still be a customer but will most likely not try and sell anything here as that experience left a bad impression on me.
