Very small very understocked it looks like an old staples store setting they didn't have enough help

Went to Michael's and we're told by one of their employees to download their 30% discount coupon, and save even more than the Black Fridays deals. What a disappointment. The 30% discount only applied to the lowest priced item. Had I known that I would've pulled the most expensive item aside and use the coupon for that instead of a $3.00 item. This promotion is very misleading and a bogus way to apply a 30% discount coupon. When I asked one of their employees how the discount was being applied, she said that she thought it was off the lowest price item and there was nothing she could do about that. She didn't even offer the idea of perhaps separating the most expensive item out and applying the coupon to that item. I've been in retail for a long time, and this is an extremely misleading way to honor 30% off coupon. Shame on you Michaels. read more

Customer service is pretty bad in this store. I usually go during the week days and it's not usually busy to warrant the non-existent service. If I use the cashier I get a zombie stare with no greeting. The cashiers usually don't bother bagging the merchandise. One time I stopped a clerk to ask a question and I could tell they didn't want to be bothered. I won't be back even though they do have some great sales. read more

I am a long time Michaels customer but have had two unfortunate experiences with the manager at the Capitola store. In September I was at the store when it opened to buy a Cricut machine. The store was virtually empty, I was standing at the Cricut and saw an associate walking towards me. I asked for help and she said "If it's about a Cricut I don't know anything about them.". I told her I just wanted to know if they had what I wanted in a certain color. I couldn't believe it when she told me she would help me when she was finished taking boxes to the store room. I asked why she couldn't help me now and she did come and help. Today I returned some light vinyl fabric. The associate called the manager (same young woman from Sept) who said that I could not return cut fabric. She told me I knew it had creases in it when I bought it. All fabric has creases when you buy it by the way. However, this fabric had creases that I could not get out. I steamed it, tried the hair dryer, and even tried to place books on it to work out the creases. All fabric has creases but they can be ironed or steamed out. She finally told the associate to give my money back because she "didn't want to argue". Very unpleasant and no diplomacy. read more

I usually prefer to shop at local stores but unfortunately they didn't have specific frames and other crafting items I needed. I was able to order from Michaels ahead of time via online order so I could see what was in-stock. I picked up at the store with no issue within a day of ordering. Definitely will be back if the local shops don't have what I am looking for- they offer pick up in store, parking lot, shipping and delivery service options. Not going to lie, it is nice to not have to drive over the hill. read more

I would like to give my recommendation for the Framing Dept. at this Michael's store. I took the same canvas oil painting to 3 shops in Santa Cruz, and selected similar frames and borders. Everyone says to go to Lenz, but they wanted $640 for the work. So I tried FastFrame in Capitola, and their quote was $420. I went to Michael's on 41st, and they were having a 70% off sale. The final total, for the exact same work? $240. You read that correctly. I had 10 paintings to frame, so I am guessing it would have cost over $7,000 at Lenz, including tax, to get those done. The grand total from Michael's? $2,600, including tax. It's a no-brainer. Go to Michael's when the sale is on. Also, the employees in the framing department are very easy to work with, and from what I could tell from the work we had them do, take pride in doing a good job. Everything we received exceeded our expectations, and we will surely go to Michael's for our framing needs in the future. I believe Michael's may have purchased the assets of Aaron Brothers, which, no surprise, is where we used to have frames made when we lived in Dublin. P.S. After I posted this review, I noticed this frame shop has a previous negative review about delivered framework having some defects. I think the store may have listened to that review, based on one thing I didn't mention in my original write-up. When we went to pick up our artwork, they were 1 frame short on delivery. Once their quality control person had reviewed our order, they found a small nick in one of the prepared frames, and pulled that item from our order. When they showed me the nick, I don't think I would've even noticed if they hadn't pointed it out. But they had already ordered a replacement frame, at their expense, which they then delivered to us a week later. So the moral of this story is that if someone makes a mistake, that's not a big deal - mistakes are par for the course. What IS important is that they correct the mistake. In my case, they corrected it before I even knew about. That's about as good a service as one could ask for. read more

The frame shop needs more training to provide better customer satisfaction. I brought in an original watercolor to have framed and double matted. End size was 36"x48". The first time I picked it up there was a 4" scratch on the metal frame. They had to reorder the frame and redo it. The second time I picked it up there was an 12" scratch on the glass. At least the frame was ok so they only needed to redo the glass. After the first issue the manager said she would give me a good discount. After the second issue I asked to have it comped as I now had to come back a third time to pick it up. And it was now going to be 2 weeks late for a birthday present gift. She didn't want to comp it but after a moment agreed to do so. I didn't have time to wait for her to do the paperwork. That was my mistake. She said it would be taken care of when I picked it up. I trusted her. When I went to third time to pick it up, there was a different manager at the store. She refused to comp it. Though she did give me a good discount. When she went to give me my refund, she did not know how to do the math to give me the refund. I ended up having to do the math for her on my calculator and showing her how to do it. She also did not know how to wrap up the print in the protective paper. The staff person who finished putting the new glass in did not wrap it up. She brought me into the back and had me wrap it up myself. Her comment was "hey, I only work here and I'm trying to do the best I can". And she was a manager. I get that it's a new store and that finding staff is difficult these days. But these guys definitely need more training. It was not a good experience. I will definitely not be back. In the end it did turn out beautiful. But it took two extra weeks and a lot more of my time. read more

While I typically shop local, when I need multiple craft items in a pinch, this location has served me greatly! However, the reason for the review was the outstanding service I have consistently received here. Knowledgeable and friends people are able to help guide and answer questions. Today I was supported by Tomiko who answered a plethora of questions succinctly and with a depth of knowledge that showed she actually used the items as well. While Tomiko was the highlight, I appreciate the staff at this location and will be happy to return. read more

Smaller than many other Michael's stores, but still has a very good selection of reasonably priced art supplies and friendly staff. I will still shop at established local art stores for many supplies, but this is an excellent addition to our Santa Cruz County options with a lot of supplies not available in the other area shops. read more
