What really irritates me because you don't have pennies you round up the purchase I've been in there four times in the last two weeks and they haven't had pennies most businesses have them still. Good place to come get your hardware needs. Smaller than Home Depot, but has quite a bit. You can come get your car battery replaced here as well. What's nice about Ace is that there's actual people there to check you out. It's also not as crowded generally and the parking is much easier. I don't feel like I'm going to get a nail stuck in my tire in front of it. I'm more familiar with other hardware stores but might have to make this one a more frequent visit. read more

This is my go to when needing something for Aptos home or rentals. Like that several of employees are senior and senior friendly. Mellow vibe and prompt check out experience. Prices higher than big box but I am OK with that and there are specials via Ace app and/or Member sign up and/or paper flyer. Usually a good selection to choose from, for things I need, usually. Selection: Good Value: Good Service: Terrible I ordered two bags of birdseed on the phone. They were listed on the Ace Hardware website @ $35.99 each. The bags of seed were shipped to the store, where my husband picked them up. However, he was charged $41.99 per bag - a total of $12.00 too much! I checked the website again after he got home. The seed was still listed at $35.99. When I phoned the store to ask for a refund of that amount, instead of just crediting it to our VISA card (which my husband used to pay for the seed), the clerk said we would have to come into the store to be repaid. This is the second time I've had a friend go or I've gone to this hardware store and they have been absolutely awful. As someone who worked for ace hardware for 3 years myself I am shocked and appalled that this store has not been cracked down on by corporate . They have to be so low on the national customer service ranking and if not they deserve to . My partner walked in , looked around and couldn't find jumper cables 1. Bad store layout /poor merchandising He politely asked the older woman working in front where they would be . She replied "did you look??" (Are you kidding me? That is nowhere near ace standard ) 2. have been shopping here for 15+ years. They used to be so friendly and helpful as is the ACE slogan. In the last few months everything has changed. Please don't let them put you on hold, you'll be there forever, they are too busy. Also if you are a woman and want help with something like painting expect the typical attitude from a sexist and insecure man. And if you do call to make an inquiry, you are burdening them and they are not very courteous or polite. I called the yesterday inquiring about an item in stock. They stated they had plenty in stock and that they 'are looking right at them'. When I arrived there today, they had ONE on the shelf. When I was checking out, there were 3 cashiers standing behind registers and 2 customers asking where they could find something. One was a very elderly customer who was confused but eh directions given to her by cashiers just standing there with no one in line but me. They kept just pointing to her to go over there and she would see it. Seriously?? They could not walk 15 feet to help her?? The thing I love the best about Ace Hardware is great service, people who are willing to answer a dumb question or show you where something is. While I love Home Depot for the amazing amount of stuff that they have (and I mean the online version which is about 100 times more stuff than our local store), the greatest challenge is finding someone to help you when you do go INTO their store. I went into Home Depot to order tile and was told to wait at a certain desk for what ended up being an hour. Two other HD people checked on me, but weren't "allowed" to take my order. When she showed up (I was told she was having her lunch and there was no one else) and took my order, I had to show her how to multiply the number of tile I needed to get the lineal amount. [eyeroll emoji here] While I sure couldn't remodel a home with the much smaller amount of selection at Ace Hardware, it's just a hardware store and our lives are filled with a lot more incidents of small items that we need, like paint, stain, screws, etc. and I know that I can get in and out of this store faster that the other one, PLUS find a person pretty easily to answer my questions! I hope they continue to focus on the willingness to be helpful, and the level of knowledge and location of items by their help, because this is the one edge they have over the Big Store business. I'm glad they survived the Rancho Del Mar remodel/business decimation and are still there! read more

First, I do love the staff here, very kind. However I've now had two times they have offered advice that I later find is either incorrect or illegal. They told me to put mothballs out to deter skunks. It sounded great, until I came home and looked up mothballs (which I did purchase and just tossed). I have little ones around my home, this can kill kids. Also, I found out it's illegal in CA to use mothballs to deter animals because of what it does to the environment. I do realize, many people here do whatever they want to, clearly, but I am someone who doesn't put toxins knowingly into our environment so this was disturbing. The last time I was in I was offered a way to 'rig up my heat' that didn't seem safe (and I ran it by a contractor who agreed - probably effective but not safe). Being from the country myself I do realize people find unique options for issues. As someone who lives alone I have come to depend on people at stores to tell me how to use products. Unfortunately, I find I always look up what they say before I buy it here. read more

I discovered the prices on the Ace website were lower than inside their store. When I asked the store about it they claimed - something to the effect that - they were more or less not affiliated with the Ace website. Each store is independently owned, etc. Hmmm... sounds weird but there you go. And the hours posted on the ACE website read: Open from 12:01 pm until 12:01 pm. Great. However, when I have gone inside the store (sometime between 12:01 pm when they open and 12:01 pm when they close) I can find single screws or Ace brand sawzall blades at a reasonable price. I don't remember if they have nails but they do have drawers of single screws with an entire box stuffed in the back of the drawer. This store seems to have a little of a lot of things. I did buy a gallon of paint where they were able to almost match the Home Depot paint color. It was close enough that it made no difference. 3 stars because if you're not willing to match the ACE website it means I really don't know what ACE stands for. Today, the manager gave attitude when I found he charged me for items I did not purchase and overcharged me for the items I did purchase. The people who work at this store are helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. Allan helped us pick out a new Weber bbq, and it was delivered on time for a reasonable charge, which included carrying it upstairs, through our house, and out onto the desk. Ace has the best service in a hardware store I've ever had. Compare: anxiously walking around Home Depot trying to find someone - anyone - who works there to ask a question about a thermostat. Never did find anyone, so had to wing it. When you walk into Aptos Ace, someone asks you if you need help as soon as you walk in. I thought I knew where the weed barrier cloth was, but I couldn't find it. A man asked me immediately if he could help. In and out in less than 5 minutes. If they get wiped out by the Safeway expansion, I'll be sad. read more

I have been to this particular ACE a few times because it was convenient. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!! Two days ago I went to the ACE hardware in Freedom. I was looking for a latch for the back door that I needed to replace. I bought two because I wasn't sure of the size. One fit so I was going to return the other. This morning the one I installed broke so I returned them both because they didn't have a replacement. Fast forward to Aptos Ace. Found my part, checked the price, checked it against my receipt thought the price shown was a mistake. Take it to the register, sure enough that price was the price it rung up for! Here it comes..I checked the skew, they were the same. So...."hold up" Tell me why a part I bought two days ago in Freedom and I returned it there today was only 6.99 but you're trying to charge me 9.99? "Oh, each store is independently operated". So basically Aptos Ace thinks it's okay to tack on add'l 30% to your products JUST BECAUSE YOU LIVE IN APTOS!!!! I walked out laughing! Hell no I'm not gonna pay that price for a 6.99 item (which you know is already been marked up for retail). They are ripping you off. Item is probably cheaper at a different local hardware store. Been going here for a long time. It's not a huge store but you would be surprised on how much stuff they carry. This store isn't for those valley girl talking non-licensed construction guys who need to build a backyard oasis without a permit for customers on their red tagged property. It's more geared toward honest working American home owners who need hardware and home supplies to keep their homes in good shape. I'm ALWAYS welcomed at the door. ALWAYS asked if I need help and every time they get it right. They even have nice gifts. Best of all, they will take retired American flags that need to be handled properly. . Go to Yahoo Groups and join Santa_Cruz_Mid-County Neighbors Safeway's expansion at Rancho del Mar in Aptos, CA will wipe out ACE -- a small, handy, excellent, well managed, A+ service hardware store. And the Safeway expansion will wipe out the movie theater, Le Chef (cooking tools) and the old Vessey then Rite Aid pharmacy. For a small hardware shop, these guys are very well stocked. You can get almost anything you might need for home repair or small projects. The folks working there are extremely nice and helpful. Nice people, but seriously...., I purchased a tube of tub calling. I arrived home to find a 1/8 inch tear in the tube, thus allowing air into the tube and allow the calling to harden. I'd skip this store and go straight to Orchard supplies. For 2 reasons, 1. The staff at Orchard are a LOT friendlier, knowledgeable and helpful and 2. The prices are a little cheaper at Orchard. Every time I go to Aptos Ace Hardware there are people immediately available to help me find what I need and answer my questions. I never have to search for a salesperson, and the checkout counter is always staffed well so that you rarely have to wait. I also like their "rewards" card. read more
