Mike and Mr Thomas know what they're doing. Custom profiling, a billion combinations. It's nothing like going to Jose A Banks etc. it's all custom here down to the button and even belt loops. You can choose anything. They're not selling you a suit, but providing a long term relationship. Thinking of picking my second suit already. Price varies on your material. Turnaround time is a month or so. Next time I'm getting more creative, because the suit I got was very formal for the office setting. I am new to DC from Manhattan and needed a last minute alteration on a vest for a cruise and Google searched "tailor shop". I called on Wed 09 Nov 2016 and spoke to Michael. I briefly explained my story and stopped into Michael Thomas Custom Clothier shortly thereafter. Both Michael and his father Thomas came out to assess my situation. I left my vest there overnight and returned the next afternoon when I met their tailor Aziz. He properly fitted my vest with pins and I left their shop on Thursday at 1:30pm. Michael called me back when it was ready and I had it packed in my suitcase three hours later! Not only was the alteration priced lower then a nearby professional alteration shop, but the friendly environment and awesome quality of service has solidified my relationship with my new DC tailor and custom clothier. I have been extremely disappointed overall with my experience with this "tailor." I went in to ask if they could make a couple simple shirts. That's when I found out that their tailors/seamstresses are not in-house, rather they are in New Jersey. So they sent them a picture of one of my shirts and they said they could do it. "Let's just start with one," they said. This shirt was your typical tailored-fit ladies shirt with a zipper on the side so that it fits you well and you can zip it up after you put it on. So on March 13, they measured me and Kristen helped me choose the fabric and the Harris accents. Then, I received an email from Kristen informing me that the fabric was out-of-stock and wouldn't be in for a month. She said I could pick a different one, but I didn't want to spend another hour in there so I just said I'd wait. The shirt arrived on April 24 and you could have fit 3 of me inside it. Despite the fact that they measured me, it was ridiculously big -- like a tent. They said they may have done that because they were too worried I wouldn't be able to get it over my head because they didn't know how to put the zipper on. Then, I noticed the Harris detail wasn't done with the second fabric. I was told by Tom that I didn't pay for that, when in fact I did. After I left, Kristen confirmed that I had paid for that. She said their local tailor would meet me in their store the next day and he would fix the shirt, then they'd send it back to the factory to get the Harris detail put on. I met with the tailor who said it was so big that he would have to modify it inch by inch meaning several meetings with him as he changes one thing at a time. He measured me and assured me he'd fix it and it would look great. On May 8, I contacted Kristen to ask if the tailor had brought the shirt by. Instead of a response from her, I received a call from Tom telling me that the shirt was too difficult to fix and that I would not be happy with it. What? A month and a half later and several trips to the store and they decided for me that I would not be happy?! I was as patient as anyone could be and I really wanted that shirt. He said it would cost them too much in tailoring and just told me to come over so they could refund the cost I paid of $193 for the shirt. There was no real explanation provided. It all seemed very shady. In the end, Kristen never even apologized -- she had her father refund me and he was very short with me. I am extremely disappointed to have wasted so much time there. It is clear that they are not professionals and I would not recommend them to anyone. Instead, just find a shirt at the mall that fits. It'll be far less hassle than dealing with this company. read more

My fiance and I had purchased a custom tuxedo from another company that unfortunately was not what we ordered and was unwearable. This tuxedo arrived with only 11 total days (9 business days) before our wedding, leaving us LITTLE time to find an alternative. This for certain became the most stressful event throughout the whole wedding planning process. It was midnight when I frantically e-mailed Thomas and Michael. Early the following morning, my fiance was already on the phone with Thomas trying to come up with a solution. He did everything to help us... he called all his tailors to see if they could craft a custom tux within such short time, he called all his vendors to see if there was an already made tux that he could tailor, he also offered his personal tailor to completely redo the botched tux we had from the initial company. I was truly taken aback by Thomas' sincere willingness to help our situation and all the effort the was putting in. I had been expecting him to laugh at such an outrageous request to get a custom tuxedo in such a short time, but instead he was caring and understanding of the situation. In the end, we ended up going another route, so I cannot comment on the quality of his products. BUT I just want to say that Thomas' responsiveness, professionalism and caring nature is something I will always remember. Highly recommend on just customer service alone. read more

Michael took a ton of measurements and was extremely helpful. There are so many different options, I had no idea, ha. Luxurious, excellent customer service, sheer perfection--those are the phrases which come to mind when I think of Michael Thomas Clothiers. I went in to get a custom outfit made for my 40th birthday party, and I was delighted with their vast selection of fabrics and colors for suits and shirts. As this was my first experience with bespoke garments, I was a bit intimidated. Mike was extremely patient with me as I pored over binder after binder to find THE perfect shirt. He spent two hours with me, discussed all the options, listened to my preferences, and made helpful, insightful suggestions--I never knew there were so many details that could enhance an outfit. I ended up buying four shirts and a suit! When I went in for my first fitting, Mike remembered that my beverage of choice was Coke and had a chilled Coke waiting for me upon my arrival. I was amazed at how well the suit jacket and pants fit to a tee. Tom remarked that I was tearing up as I looked in the mirror; he was right--I had never had clothes fit so well! The jacket sleeves were a little short, and they assured me their tailor would make the necessary adjustments within a week. Two of the shirts fit perfectly, while two of them needed slight alterations. I happened to see some new fabric samples and saw a color that would match one of the shirts even better than the black suit I had originally purchased. I decided to splurge and buy another suit in that color, thrilled that I had now found THE PERFECT OUTFIT for my birthday party! As promised, the alterations were done in less than a week, and when I went in for the second fitting today, the suit jacket and the two shirts fit me so well I didn't want to take them off. The clothes are worth every penny, for the care and attention in their production are evident. I was impressed with the quality of the clothing and the customer service I received. A few days after my first visit, I received a handwritten card from Mike, thanking me for my business. The fact that he took the time to WRITE a note won me over. Went to Michael Thomas Custom Clothiers to purchase a tuxedo for my wedding. First off, the customer service was fantastic. I was borderline psychotic about the particulars of a few attributes of the suit and Mike was accommodating the entire way. Second, the fit of the suit was near perfect the first time I tried it on. The on-site master tailor was able to make 1 or 2 very minor alterations while I waited around, and after he was done the suit fit like a damn glove. I also think that the quality of the construction of the suit is worth mentioning. I have done a couple "custom" suits in the past from "traveling" tailors that visit the area and meet with clients and take mass orders. The quality of the suit that I got from Michael Thomas is definitely superior. The suit just feels strong throughout. All in all, I would highly recommend checking this place out. I turned to Michael Thomas clothiers to make a suit for me to wear on my first day at a new job. I chose them over their competition because they were the only place that agreed to have a suit ready within four weeks, in time for my first day. This was my first-ever experience purchasing anything other than an off-the-rack suit. Overall, I had a positive experience and would return again. The Good: 1. Tom Comeau and his son did a thorough job fitting me for the suit (which of course, is their job). Since I was new to the whole process, I wasn't exactly lightning quick in my decision-making. They took time to explain the types of fabrics and colors that I could choose, and (again, as one would expect) made all the necessary measurements. I spent well over an hour at the initial measuring session, and never felt rushed. 2. During the whole process, I had a direct line to Tom on his cell phone, and was able to ask all the questions I needed. They are indeed a family operation and customers get all the benefits that this entails. 3. I paid $795 for the suit - from my research, I understand that this price is pretty competitive with other clothiers in the area. There were less expensive options at Michael Thomas, but I decided to go at this price range. 4. As promised, the suit came in just in time for me to wear at my first day on the job - in four weeks. I was pleased with it. It is stylish, modern, and fits me perfectly. Tom and his son came to the shop on a day on which it was otherwise closed to make sure the suit fit properly and to answer any questions I had. Some things to be aware of: I get the impression that (not surprisingly, considering this is Washington) the business caters to a professional crowd. Therefore, the default fashion suggestions you get here may lean towards the conservative. I am younger and wanted a more modern, slim-fitting European look with snazzier lapels, etc., but something just conservative enough that I could pull it off at work. I had done a little bit of research online before I went into the store, and am glad I did. I was pretty confident in what I wanted, and Tom and his son happily ran with it (and gave me other helpful suggestions along the way). I would suggest that for others who are looking for a more modern stylish look, you do a little bit of legwork beforehand and get an idea of what you want. Also: if you really need a piece of clothing on short notice for an important occasion, I would suggest taking advantage of the direct line to Tom and proactively check in with him periodically about the status. Ultimately, my suit came in right when promised, but it was more of a cliffhanger than I cared for. That said, my request was unusual, and at the end of the day they delivered. And that's all that counts. So: I got the suit I wanted at a reasonable price, with pretty personal service. I think anyone looking to have a suit made could choose Michael Thomas with confidence. read more

The service I received from the staff at Michael Thomas Custom Clothiers was absolutely excellent. I had two suits I bought off the rack altered by their tailor. He had excellent knowledge of proper fit and what is possible with alteration. The finished product fits like a glove and was not terribly expensive. It also only took a week turnaround. I will definitely be bringing more items for alteration and would consider buying a made to measure item from them based on the service alone. read more

All well and good, but they don't sew and use some crappy outsourced services to do so. Thus the actual "tailor" is not even on site doing his own measurements or fittings. This, and the fact that they use substandard tailors to begin with, yields pathetic results. They not only messed up a suit, but messed up other items I brought in for alterations - completely ruined one item. The fact is that real sewing and tailoring is sadly becoming a lost art in the US, and all the "personal service" in the world cannot overcome this fundamental deficiency. Go to Europe and even small casual clothes stores will have on-site people who can perform alterations far superior to what Michael Thomas "Custom" Clothiers can produce. This at bottom should be a very simple business: find a true master tailor and the world will come running to your door. The trick is to find the talent. This place evidently has not come within light years of finding that master tailor. Instead, their business model is that that "consultation" and "service" compensate for pathetic tailoring. These are nice enough people, but only a rube will fall for the sizzle without the steak. read more

I'd give them 6 stars if possible. I needed a suit made on a short timeline and the staff not only met my needs but exceeded all expectations. Had a great suit in hand two weeks later! I did pay a premium for the rush, but they were able to make it happen when no one else in DC could. Final alterations took another day (done by their in house master tailor) but overall very happy with how things turned out. I actually ended up putting in an order for a custom shirt before I left the store. Great staff, great quality, and totally reasonable prices. I moved to town for work and needed a new wardrobe for a position I took. The staff took the time to help me pick out amazing combinations of shirts, pants and ties.
