Dr. Mitchell is a good Doctor who listens to your concerns and put you at ease when he is talking, he breaks it down to where the average person can understand. A few times with a lapse of insurance I had to go on self pay and his Office was very accomodating with bill pay! Never had any issues here. read more

I wish I could give this company no stars. From the very beginning, they weren't "great" but I only needed physicals so I didn't care too much about splitting hairs. They had a PA named Brandy and she was actually very good for the first two years I've been going there to get my physical. Surprisingly, I was informed that Brandy had "left to pursue new opportunities". However, the real story was that this doctor's office was imploring shady business practices under new insurance guidelines. For example, they are claiming that I signed a form for my physical that states that they would be performing an additional test that is not covered under the majority of insurance plans physical guidelines (they refused to send me a copy of this form signed or blank) so I can review to verify the exact verbiage of this to see exactly what it states. I never requested this test to be done by the new PA they assigned to me (I believe her name was Julie) and have stated like I do every year I've went to that doctor's office that I only wanted the bare minimum physical done so I can check the box off for my employer. Then, I was informed that they had decided to run preventative tests using the same blood work for additional labs including STD test - again I was never informed or requested this. In fact, if and when I do want to get STD tested, there's plenty of free clinics in the region that do this preventatively so why I would pay hundreds of dollars to have them do this was far beyond me. They had no paperwork done to say I signed off to have this work performed but stated that when I authorized them to do labs/bloodwork, that constitutes blind acknowledgment that they can run and charge whatever tests they like O_O. All this was explained rudely to me by a woman by the name of Melissa - who has to probably be the most, condescending customer service employee I've ever met in my life to be completely honest. She matter of factly told me that the amounts where only a few hundred dollars and next time I should be more careful and get a specific inventory of all the tests and lab work they decide to run on the day of my basic physical to make copies, audio recordings of my exam to ensure that I can beyond a doubt prove that I did not request or authorize in specific or blanket form that their office can do whatever they want. Fun fact - apparently, you can still get credit for doing a "physical" by just going to the doctor and not having them touch you, take any blood work, or perform any tests other than verbal examination - at least that's what she claims is truly a basic physical so if you see them trying to actually touch you or do anything else, you better pull out your phone and insurance declaration page to start making calls and verify coverage on your own - especially when dealing with this doctor's office. Dr. Whittaker is simply amazing. He is fully in charge of both me and my spouse's health and we would never trust any other PCP. Most times I can get in to see him within a day or two. If you are looking for a doctor who is knowledgeable, takes a personal interest in your health, and has a great personality. If you want a a top notch doctor, look no further, Whittaker is your man. I've never experienced a more rude, inept group at any physician I've ever been to. Since he shares the office with two other doctors, I won't hold his receptionist area against him. I saw that as the negative part in a review and I have to agree. I wasn't crazy about the doctor I'd been going to, so I thought I'd try a new one. I needed a physical, and I found a lump in my chest I wanted looking at. Would they give me a physical? Nooooooo. They utterly refused to until I went to a "new patient consultation", which no other doctor in my 38 yrs of living has required. The consultation consisted of Dr. Whittaker basically making fun of me for whining about the problems I need addressed, and making fun of my shirt for being too tight. The lump I wanted looked at -- he walked out without looking at it, and I had to call him back in for it. The bill? $331.00, with a patient responsibility for me of $208.00. For nothing. I got my prescriptions reviewed, and he felt a lump for 1 minute and told me "watch it to see if it gets worse". Yeah. I was already doing that. Anything to avoid spending money, everything to be able to collect $300. read more

I am a new patient and visited Dr Mitchell for a physical. I was told that I had to have a new patient office visit before I could have the physical. I was not told that an office visit is not covered by insurance. The office visit consisted of a 30 minute conversation with the doctor about medical history, diet, exercise, and other preventative health topics. Dr Mitchell was professional and courteous, but it was unclear why this visit was necessary before having a physical. After the visit I received a notice from my insurance saying that the claim was not covered and the physician sent me a bill for $150. Are you kidding me, $150 for a 30 minute conversation that I had to have instead of the physical I actually wanted? Now it is clear that the new patient office visit is a way to extract money from patients in advance of providing them the services that they request. I spoke with the practice regarding the outlandish bill and received very curt, unprofessional, condescending remarks from the Office Manager. This office takes advantage of its patients. Not exactly the type of relationship I'd want to have with my doctor. I will not be paying them a dime or visiting them again. read more

I moved here from Southern California and it took a long time and so many disappointing consultations to find Dr. Michael Mitchell. He is such a caring doctor, takes his time with patients, is always on time and truly listens to you. My past experiences in the area were not positive and I had all but given up. So now that I've found him I'm very happy and thankful. His front office is efficient and most of the time, friendly. Dr. Mitchell's office hours are flexible and can fit anyone's schedule. I think the only down side is the parking situation. So it is important you give yourself the extra ten to fifteen minutes to find parking before your appointment. read more

I've been a patient here for over a decade. This is a review of the practice as a whole (my review of Dr. Mitchell specifically http://www.yelp.com/biz/michael-mitchell-md-alexandria). Located on the 12th floor of the Alexandria Professional building, the practice is insanely convenient to get to being just off 395 and there's ample parking on the lot and the garage below - just be careful if you park in the shopping center lot as only the spaces along the retaining wall are available for patient use. The staff is simply incredible, friendly, and well organized. They deftly handle getting patients in and out in a very efficient manner - while always maintaining sensitivity and respect for the individual. The nursing staff is very kind and gentle. One of the phlebotomists (who is awesome at getting a stick on the 1st try) rescued me from the 'vampire' on duty before my arm was a sieve and quickly filled the vials. She also told me to tell anyone who needs to draw blood to use a butterfly needle on my ridiculously squirmy veins. One of the best things is they keep a good number of appointment slots open so that they can handle emergency walk-ins as needed. I've never not been able to get an appointment on the same day when I've been very sick. They also have some days with appointments available as early as 7am making it very convenient to stop by and still get to work on time. read more

I changed PCP's to Scott Whittaker after interviewing two other internal medicine specialists. It is important to me that I have a good personal rapport with my PCP,, that he/she listen to my MANY questions and answer them without patronizing me. Had a great first visit with Dr. Whittaker when he spent over an hour going through my complicated medical history. He eliminated some medications - he said I was poly-pharmaceutical since I had several specialists prescribing and he also said I did not need all the specialists -- that he could manage what they had been. My initial phone call with the office was not positive, but I tried again and have never had a problem getting a quick appointment or a quick call back from the doc. I'm a fan and have already referred a friend who is now seeing Mr. Whittaker as well. read more

I have never seen these doctors. I attempted to make a new patient appointment because we're changing insurance (to Carefirst HMO through the federal plan) in January and my husband is a patient of Dr. Whittaker's. He saw Dr. Whittaker yesterday and told me that Dr. Whittaker said he'd take me on as a patient because I was a spouse. Okay - great. I call to make my appointment. They are part of Loudoun Medical Group, who has my information in their system from 8 years ago when I went to their Sterling clinic once in February/March 2004. I had no insurance at the time of the visit and explained that upfront - they said I could make payment arrangements. I ended up leaving their office via ambulance because I had meningitis. They sent me to collections despite efforts to set up a payment plan. The bill was discharged in January 2006 as part of my bankruptcy. I was not able to make an appointment with Dr. Whittaker's office because they would not accept me as a patient due to my "outstanding balance". I explained that the debt was discharged almost 6 years ago and that I had all the paperwork to prove it. The lady I spoke with (Melissa) said that she spoke with the billing office and they said they had no record of the discharge and that I still had a "high balance". I asked if there was anything I could do to clear my record and she said "I spoke to Dr. Whittaker and he said he would absolutely not see you now." She hung up on me before I could get the billing office information to clear my name. I called my husband to report this finding and now he's worried that Dr. Whittaker will not see him because of this. He also said to me that Dr. Whittaker told him that they are turning Carefirst patients away from the practice because they have had ongoing billing disputes with Carefirst and they don't want to be part of the insurance anymore. I am writing a negative review based on the fact that the initial contact with the office was so rude and callous and unhelpful that it doesn't deserve such high ratings. The doctors themselves may be wonderful clinicians, but when you have an office staff that treats patients like dirt, then they deserve to be put on blast for it. I work for a medical practice and I can guarantee you that if I ever treated a patient like how I was treated, I'd have been written up. read more

I went in this past week and the very first thing Dr. Wu said to me was "for all new patients, we check the Virginia Board about medications and it seems you have taken a lot of pain medication and I am NOT giving you any" - The very first thing he said to me. I was NOT there to get pain medication, I was there because the ER told me to follow up. I have an OBVIOUS issue -. He didnt even look at my chart and the paperwork I brought with him - if he would have, I think he may have had a different tone. The staff is very very nice, helpful. Dr. Wu seems knowledgeable but I left there not knowing what the answer or possible answer to my issue was. I received a slip to get some further testing done - which I am scheduled for next week but I have to say, to barge into the exam room saying what he said and the assumptions - not comforting! read more

Do not use this doctor's office!! If I could give 0 stars, I would. I selected Dr. Whittaker as my Primary Care Provider and called to schedule my first appointment. It was a month before they could see me. The day of my appointment, I showed up and was turned away because they said they don't take my insurance. I told them that I was able to select Dr. Whittaker as a PCM and was rudely told "I said we don't take your insurance ". I called my insurance company and they said that I shouldn't have been refused service because Dr. Whittaker is a PCM in the network. read more

I didn't see Dr Mitchell when I went but one of his partners. The doctor I saw was the biggest jackass I've ever met in my life. Did not ask me any of my health history, told me he was really unhappy with my weight and suggested diet pills. He didn't care when I told him that I work out 6x a week and eat a mostly clean diet, he also told me supplements were a joke. I would NEVER recommend this practice. read more

Since my Primary Care Physician moved to another state, we need to find a new PCP. He really have great reviews on Yelp and other site, so I called to have an appointment for my Annual Physical. So this lady, answered the phone to schedule for my appointment, she gave me a schedule and ask me to wait. I waited for 30 minutes and nobody came back to me on the line. Then, I called back and she pick up again and said, "Dr. Mitchell don't do back to back for new patient. He only see new one patient in the morning and one in the afternoon. Then, since you are new patient you will only see him for consultation (February 2014)and you can only schedule your Annual Physical by May." Why do I need to have consultation first and I bet this consultation if for me to write my information on the paper. Then, he will bill my insurance for nothing. Also, I am choosing him as my PCP, it means I will see him mostly likely once a year, then, why can he have my annual physical right away. All the my past PCP (3 doctors), I never had this kind of experience of scheduling a new annual exam. If you are looking for a new Primary Care Physician, please don't have him. It is a waste of time calling and set up an appointment. read more

I really like this doctor. He's very caring but also, he has been on time the two times I've been there and his office staff is very responsive. And, when you call for an appointment because you're having some sort of issue, they are able to fit you in. After being "let go" by 2 doctors that went concierge, I did some research and chose Dr. Mitchell. Like all good doctors, he is busy but I was able to get a decent "meet & greet" appointment followed by a physical a few months later. The "meet & greet" is so they can collect all your info and have the doctor talk to you briefly. It is required as a first a appointment and helps them cover costs. They will never do a physical as a first appointment, which is fair. As luck would have it, I had a lingering sinus infection when I came in and he did prescribe some antibiotics that did the job. During the physical he spent a good amount of time with me and was open to discussing my concerns with statins based on research I had been doing on the internet. He was gracious with his time and did not take a "hard line" on statins being awesome for everyone. I am perfectly happy with Dr. Mitchell and would recommend him to others. The staff is courteous and efficient. I believe I heard or read that if you are a patient and are sick you can do a walk in, which is somewhat rare. (Maybe I should only give him 5 stars if he cures some bad disease of mine, but hopefully he won't get that opportunity so I will give him the benefit of the doubt) My wife went in June 2015 and was pleased: no wait to get the a room and then no wait for the doctor to show up. For blood tests, they can do some themselves and the can send to LabCorp and Sunrise(?). Make sure you check with your insurance, even though they might be covered, the Dr. office will likely charge you more than if send to LabCorp. read more

The unhelpful and unfriendly person who answered the appointment line, told me that I have to first have a "new patient consultation" and only two month after that I may schedule a physical. Really? *I'm currently kicking myself!* I am a devoted yelper, yet somehow neglected to review my primary care physician. Dr. Mitchell became my PCP in 2012 when I moved to the area. I kind of "tried him out" to establish care and ultimately realized he was the perfect fit. From day 1, he has always been attentive to my concerns, followed up personally by phone, and spends just enough time at the bedside to let you know he cares. I am also a physician, but when it comes to MY health I want to be a patient. He recognizes this and educates me as such. Dr. Mitchell is an all around pretty awesome physician! Oh... and the front desk staff. Ok, so I have seen instances where they lack professionalism. One time they wouldn't even let me in upon arrival, 3 minutes before their lunch break ended (I was only picking up a prescription btw) LOL My fiancé actually cringes at their desk etiquette. HOWEVER, they get their job done and I have never had any issues with things being carried out. If you are looking for a "stiff" militant front desk...not your place. If you are looking for one where you may overhear some gossip, but your paperwork, prescriptions, appointments, and all other aspects have already been handled...here you go! The phlebotomists are excellent and never had any issues with blood draws...quick and painless! That's about all I can say regarding the staff...I don't know the other doctors and likely will never meet them, because no way I am seeing anyone other than Dr. Mitchell. read more

I'm seriously shocked by this office's overall rating. It should be WAY higher. I guess I can't speak for everyone, but every time I go, I have a pleasant experience. The front desk staff members are always kind and I just love my doctor, Dr. Mitchell!! He's seriously the BEST PCP I've ever had. I always do lots of research before picking a doctor and besides his obviously stellar credentials, he also has the best bedside manners. He never makes me feel stupid or awkward or uncomfortable. He is very thorough and answers all of my stupid questions. He's very patient with my low tolerance for blood and needles and I never feel rushed when I have a doctor visit. I tried making an appointment at this place today since its less than a mile from my place. When I called, I explained in detail what I needed and that I didn't have insurance. I asked what the visit would cost... The lady answered, "Anywhere from $109-$450." Ok, but this is a program you all offer... What's the standard visit cost? I live about a mile away from the Alexandria Professional Building, and my previous internist (on the 7th floor) not only failed to give me sound medical advice, but knew what happened last time I was not given the medication, a grand mal convulsive seizure. The medical advice was verbatim "wait until you have a seizure, and then go to the ER." I responded "I'm outta here and I'm finding another primary care physician because I'm done at this place." So I decided to get on my phone and change my internists to these guys on the 12th floor. My first appointment with Dr. Wu was great! I told him about what I was told on the 7th floor and he could not believe it. He prescribed my medication I needed and also gave me the referrals to specialists I see also. My mother also changed from her old physician to this practice and she is impressed. Once you are an established patient, if you have a matter that is somewhat urgent, you can see one of the other physicians on the same day. I've dragged myself when I've felt like garbage to get checked up on and anti-nausea when I had a horrible bug a few months ago that put me out of commission for a few weeks. Wu also went the extra mile to call my professors at GMU that I was seriously ill and allow me time to recuperate! Excellent healthcare from these doctors, they spend as much time with you as you need or if you just need something quick you are in and out. 2 thumbs up to these guys! read more

As the other reviews on here state, a separate consultation appointment before a physical is not standard practice. 2-3 months out to schedule a physical is not an acceptable timeframe. Perhaps, this is a fantastic practice, but I'm not really sure how a new patient can ever find out unless they are scheduling an appointment for specific complications. Preventative medicine doesn't appear to be a priority at this practice. read more

I used to be a patient of Dr. Mitchell a while back. I moved outside the area and had to change doctors. I'm back in the area and decided to contact them again, to find out that the only doctor that would take my insurance was Dr. Wu. I gave him a try and will never be back. He couldn't care less about my concerns. I couldn't believe that after 5 min with him he said to continue seeing the specialist I was seeing and to keep him posted. I would not trust my health with Dr. Wu. It sounds to me they don't need new patients so maybe they should stop accepting them. read more
