Dr. Trahos is extremely thorough ... if there is something he or you should know, he will detect it or order the right test (e.g. blood exam, CT scan, MRI, heart stress test) and find it or refer you to the appropriate specialist (e.g. podiatrist, urologist, gynecologist, cardiologist). Mr. Trahos is a horrible, horrible doctor. Besides his stellar personality of being condescending, rude, and annoyed that you have the audacity to ask any questions regarding your health, he should not be allowed to touch patients. He is not a trained chiropractor and should never try to adjust anyone. Even when I was screaming at him to stop, he did not. He completely maimed me and robbed me of 2 plus years of my life. After his "adjustment" he left me not being able to walk, stand for more than 30 seconds, and basically bedridden due to the severe amount of pain. This forced me to have surgery and I will now have lifelong issues with my back. He does not listen to his patients; he could care less to make you wait for 45 plus mins while he's shooting the breeze with someone else. There's a reason why it's so easy to get an ADHD prescription from him because you don't have to go through all the hoops. That's how I was lured in. I wish I never met his man. His staff is through and efficient but at times quite busy sometimes can't help you right away but follow through and get back with you. Here are some additional experiences I had that I failed to mention, unrelated to the two experiences I've already recounted. On several occasions, I mentioned a particular symptom I was manifesting. The symptom was then explained to me in anatomical or physiological terms, along the lines of "this symptom is a manifestation of the way your body is working." It nonetheless turned out that the symptom was actually a common side effect of a medication that had been prescribed for me, and it was only after doing some research on my own that I came across this information. The symptom became pronounced enough that I stopped taking the medication; after several days the symptom disappeared completely. Another disappointment occurred when an intern made a diagnosis that was either inaccurate or to some extent greatly overblown, and a confirmation of the diagnosis was made and a program of treatment was suggested. I declined the treatment, and there have been no subsequent problems. This experience did, however, cause me some mental distress. If the condition indeed existed, why had it not been previously discovered and discussed with me during my many years as a patient, and why was there no subsequent discussion of it during the medical appointments I had afterward? My recommendation in such situations is that the patient be as proactive as possible in questioning both diagnoses and the effectiveness and necessity of the prescriptions they are given. read more

Dr. Trahos is a great physician - a funny one too. I went for my regular physical checkup and cholesterol test prep. The receptionists were somewhat rude. I have yet to encounter a friendly receptionist. This normally transitions to equally rude doctors. Not Dr. Trahos. He was great. He welcomed me and thoroughly did checkups using his experiences and personal tips. Although it was same routine checkup, he made it fun and did it very comfortably unlike other doctors who hates seeing patients like me since I'm only here for routine checkups and that doesn't translates to $$$. I'll be sure to coming back but dealing with receptionists isn't something I'm looking forward to. read more

I was in search of a reliable primary care physician that actually cares about your well being and not about rushing you back out the door so they they can see more patients. Needless to say the search was long. I finally found Dr. Trahos on ratemydoctor and the reviews were positive so I gave it a shot. I went in for a routine checkup and he was very nice and welcoming. I was referred to Dr Trahos through a friend. I was unhappy with my previous Doctor who was just bad. Dr Trahos is very good at explaining things and usually has students with him, who h I find useful since he will have them answer questions that I find informative. He is always pleasant and easy to ask questions. His staff has always been helpful, if you are calling for a refill it will get done at the end if the workday. I LOVE Dr. Trahos! My co-pay is dirt cheap (maybe that means I just love my insurance?) but for $10 I get some random jokes, a doctor who actually is a nice person and listens to what I have to say, AND a chiropractic adjustment! He is not one to just dole out an RX for whatever is wrong, but actually explains how to adjust your lifestyle for whatever is wrong with you. I would highly recommend him! I have been a patient for more than 1 year. Dr. Trahos takes time to answer my questions and consider multiple treatment options. I feel he cares about getting the treatment right for me personally. I also like that he has students with him. They always ask if it's okay if the student(s) participate of sit in on the visit, so if you don't want them around, no problem. Good doctor, but his office and his staff were dreary and rude. His office hasn't had an update since the 70s and gives the impression of being quite sketchy. His staff were seriously unwelcoming and rude. They made it seem as if I was a significant intrusion to them. They seemed disgusted that I couldn't tell them exactly how my 35 year long back issues had started. and when I told them I would not be using insurance, rather than ask if I was self paying, or anything, they responded "The doctor will not see you then." I responded that "Don't you want to ask me if I plan to pay for the visit?" She simply stuck out her hand and took the credit card, no "sorry", no nothing. Dr. Trahos and his staff are awesome. He cares about his patients, has a gentle bedside manner, and is very professional. He's experienced and confident. He listens and *hears* you. I've never waited more than a couple of minutes for my appointment. I was recently in the hospital after having violent flu symptoms. I fainted and hit my head and was having sharp pains in my head. The hospital was running tests but wasn't doing anything about my pain. When Dr. Trahos heard about it, he personally showed up at the hospital and the next thing I knew was they finally gave me pain meds and he got me released into his care. He knew exactly what was wrong with me and fixed it almost immediately. Whenever I call after hours, he personally responds. I've been seeing him for years, but this is the first time I've really had a problem. I'm so impressed with him. When I looked up and saw him standing over my bed in the hospital, I almost cried because I knew at that moment he would take care of me. I cannot recommend him more highly! read more

He's an osteopath so that's a plus for me. He has medical students with him during appointments (but always asks if its OK for them to stay). It's kind of good because as he explains things to them I get more comprehensive information about my condition from their questions. I don't know why doctors don't give these kinds of thorough explanations to patients themselves. Apparently they think we're too dumb. Wrong. At one point Dr. Trahos said said to his med students that they should talk to patients like they are middle schoolers because that's the level of education/intelligence most of them have. (I can't believe he said that in front of a patient! And I hope he never talks down to me as if I'm 12. So far that's not an issue, though.) Some others commented on rude receptionists. I don't have any evidence of that. Everyone I encountered in the office seemed nice enough to me. --------- Updating my review and downgrading by one star: I did end up changing providers, and for these reasons: I felt like Dr. Trahos didn't really listen to me. He sort of talked over me, saying "understood" before I've finished my sentence. He says "understood, understood" when I don't feel like he actually cares to understand. I didn't actually feel heard. (I completely agree with another Yelp reviewer who said this: "It seems his consultation or advice is more of a show for the students - on several occasions it seemed like he dismissed my concerns or wasn't actually talking with me." Also his office is not modern at all. For one, he keeps paper records instead of electronic ones. He also doesn't stock flu shots, or at least he didn't last year. (I was under the impression that he never had any, not that he had run out.) He also doesn't have more modern devices such as a testing device that checks diabetic a1c levels in the office instantly and with a little finger prick similar to what's used for a blood-glucose meter. I would have to go to an outside lab to get stuck with painful needles every three months and then wait several days or longer for the results. My current doc tests it right in her office quickly, efficiently and (nearly) painlessly. Dr. Trahos is ok, but I feel much more comfortable with my new provider. read more

They just added a new Quest Lab in their office. This makes them Lord of the Dance. Am so excited. Dr Trahos prescribe a med years ago that was cutting edge. I did not take it then but do now which is awesome. His staff is crisp and clear and on target consistently. He is my second opinion doctor, because he doesn't do Arlington Hosp. But Im giving up on Arlington Hosp because your can get really hurt there if you don t watch it. read more

Dr. Trahos is an outstanding physician!! I was having all sorts of problems and had been to quite a few physicians and chiropractors with no help. He quickly diagnosed it and did a few manipulations that made a HUGE difference immediately. Turns out it's a back problem that was causing knee problems. He gave me lots of good advice for how to move forward and heal. Dr. Trahos is an old fashioned doctor, with a progressive mind set, who actually cares about people and their health! Best Doctor Ever!!!!!!! Dr Trahos was highly recommended to me over 30 years ago. From my very first visit I was impressed. His diagnosis of what ever my issue was that day was correct and has been correct EVERY time since (wether I liked/agreed with his diagnosis or not) it was correct. I referred a relative to him one time, he listened as she described her symptoms And said you have ...... She didn't agree, after seeing 11 other doctors. Specialists, MRI's, EKG's and other test over the following 11 months, guess what? She found out she had the exact problem Dr Trahos had diagnosed in her first visit. (She could have been 11 months closer to relief if she had listened to dr Trahos the first time. His staff ( very friendly and courteous ) goes way out of there way to help. Getting appointments in a timely manner, making sure I get the most coverage from my insurance company and the least out of my pocket!!! Recently my insurance company denied coverage on a certain medication I needed. I couldn't afford it So I couldn't get it. Ok can't afford it do so I won't take it. The next day I get a voice mail from his staff saying they found out my insurance wouldn't cover it, they took it upon their selves, and went the extra mile! I didn't notify them this had happened! they just "did there "thing" The message said there was a prescription waiting for me at my pharmacy that my insurance did cover!!! Surprise!!! To say the least!!!! They are very friendly and VERY efficient ((((note to payroll, give them a raise $$$ )))) Over the years I've moved farther away from Alexandria, first time 45 min. Away second move an hour, third time an hour and a half (with traffic sometimes three hours) each time I moved I tried closer doctors to me, that gave me wrong diagnosis about every time, and didn't seem to care if they were right or not, so I took the extra drive time to go see dr Trahos (WELL worth the drive). Several years ago I moved to North Carolina, and guess who my doctor is??? Well it's a 7-9 hour drive to see dr Trahos, might take two days to get there and back, but it's a LOT shorter that 11 months with the wrong diagnosis !!! I had several bad experiences with the staff at Dr. Trahos' practice. The most recent one was so bad, it earned this 1-star rating. Dr. Trahos himself is very pleasant and attentive during office visits; however he does not follow-up and is loathe to consult over the phone between visits. It is hard to tell whether this quality is a result of call screening by his staff, or his preferred way of running his practice. Dr. Trahos is also actively involved in teaching med students. He always checks to make sure you are comfortable with med students attending your office visit. Sometimes though, it seems his consultation or advice is more of a show for the students - on several occasions it seemed like he dismissed my concerns or wasn't actually talking with me. read more

I am so happy to finally find a doctor I really, really like (I've tried a couple in this area). First of all, they were able to get me in the same day I called, parking was easy and the office staff and nurse were friendly. I did have to wait half an hour with nobody else in the waiting room so I would really give this practice 4.5 stars. BUT, after meeting Dr. Trahos, I had to give 5. He was friendly, easy-going, professional and took time to talk to me! He was able to diagnose me immediately but still took time to do an exam. He had med students with him and they were very professional as well. I'm always happy to let students practice on me (especially speak as a health care professional myself). Overall, I am very pleased and definitely going to make him my regular PCP. read more

I oversee my mother's care with Dr. Trahos. We both have found him to have an excellent bed-side manner and is as experienced and knowledgeable a geriatric physician as you will find. On each of our visits over the past two years, he trains medical students as part of the routine in-office exam, which is fine because you get to hear explanations that you may not otherwise get with a typical visit. During one visit, he must've sat and talked with me and my mother for well over an hour, discussing causes-and-effects of medications to be prescribed, and that is virtually unheard of as doctors go today. He never seems rushed, or self important. He speaks in very plain English and does not seem to try to sell you anything. He is a gentle and kind physician with a solemn demeanor, a rarity in a society where everyone seems to feel so rushed and short on time. We feel lucky to have found him (we did a fair amount of research before choosing him); and five minutes from home to boot. :-) read more

Dr Michael Trahos is a wonderful, very caring, and very thorough doctor. I have never met such a fine doctor before and plan to keep seeing him until he retires which hopefully isn't soon. It's a rare find to find a doctor that takes the time to listen to you and explain things to you. The reason why I gave such a poor rating is because of the receptionist. She is not friendly and not very welcoming. I am very ill and have to go in monthly for my follow ups and Upon arriving for my appointment, I walk in to see her at her desk and she doesn't look up at me, nor does she smile, and nor does she greet me or any other patients in any way that come in. Maybe I'm old fashioned but what happened to the days when people use to be so welcoming and nice. I do not look forward to that part of the visit, she's very rude and just plain cold. Maybe I got her on a bad day, but it scared me to think if my doctor was going to be the same way she is which is not the case whatsoever than goodness. Do not let the awful receptionist steer you away from seeing Dr. Michael Trahos. He's very wonderful. read more
