Visited Dr. Kropf as a second opinion with my mother in January. To say " NOT ATTENTIVE" would be a understatement, but... At the time of paying for the visit a young woman at his front desk suggested if I pay the entire bill at once I would not be getting any additional payments. I did as she suggested, I believe around $750 or so, only to continue to receive additional bills. I had to pay a separate bill to Cedar Sinai (no idea why) and I continue to receive $350 that I have been trying to resolve for months. Right hand does not know from left. They continue to send me to different people and my mother continues to receive these bills. He may be a good DR, I wouldn't know, but the office seems quite unorganized and it feels like pure gouging. read more

Hello Dr Kropf. Angie Monroe here. I don't know if you remember me as it's been awhile. I remember that after seeing you for eight years, your CV was 18 pages and now it's 30 pages with smaller print. The largest I've seen of anyone's here has been 3 to 4 pages. Seriously. At any rate, you literally saved my life. When I first came to visit you, I had all but given up and ready to end my life. Then I was referred to you. If you remember, my employer hit me in the back of the neck and broke it. I could never go back to my job in the auto industry, so I got my real estate license and was going back to playing music after you fixed me. You did such an amazing job on my neck as to make that possible. Because I'm a singer, you moved my muscles over one at a time so very carefully so as not to damage the nerve controlling my vocal cords, blood pressure, or breathing. I knew I could work and make a living again until I was attacked again while at physical therapy because I refused to date a man twice my age. He broke it again and dehisced the muscle. You repaired it and had to amputate the rear spinous process fr C6, C7, T1, and T2. However he damaged my neck below the fusion and you had to go back in a third time to fuse C7 through T3 and amputate the rear spinous process at T3. Then, alas - the drunk driver - my muscle didn't hold and dehisced down to T8 and the compression fracture at T11. There was too much damage and atrophy for any more repair and you were so kind when you explained that I'd had enough surgery anyway. Those people put an end to my career but you and your wife - that wonderful woman - saved me. She told me before the first surgery when I was so very terrified, "Angie, put your life in God's hands and know that he is working through Dr Kropf and you will be fine." She was amazing. I was amazed to hear such a soft spiritual voice speak of God. She was exactly what I needed at that very moment. I could see in her eyes and by the look on her face, they weren't just "words". She truly meant it. Those kind words took away most of my fear. She was correct, too. I saw you for nine years more until you released me to Dr Kramer in 2011. Thank you for saving me. I've had numerous complications since then - falls, broken bones - many of them. My last one in 2023, I broke two more rear spinous processes below my fusion, The ER doctor said it was only soft tissue. But hey - this is Lubbock, TX. I could only shake my head as he said I was fine and released me. I thought to myself, "hmmm definitely not Dr Kropf." I also remember that when I first came in, I'd wanted the artificial discs in my neck, but they were only released for the lumbar spine. Years later they have finally been released for the cervical spine. Wish I could swap out my hardware. I'm getting nerve burns in my lumbar and sacral spine now. They seem to work ok - better than nothing. I'm still seeing Dr Kramer every three months. But of all my doctors, you and Dr Kramer are by far, my favorite doctors of all time. Fraudulent Billing I had an appointment with the doctor on Jan 18, 2021. I drove an hour to see him. I was made to sit for half an hour in the waiting room. Then I was told the doctor is not in the office - he left. They then tried to force me to see the Nurse practitioner and get some Imaging done - I refused and walked out of the office without any treatment. This is my third review of Dr Kropf. I've had two surgeries with him, and he's fantastic. I am possibly having a back surgery and he's the only doctor I would have work on my spine. Please use Dr Kropf for your spine surgery. He's not trigger happy for surgery, instead he's very cautious, and only orders surgery when it's your last option. I was referred to Dr Kropf by another Dr in same building for 2nd opinion. When I made appointment I asked if was in network with my Insurance - was told YES. I saw Dr Kropf, he spent no more than 10 minutes with me (already had x-rays & MRI). Several months later I receive bill for $500. I called his office, was told they would look into it. Month later received bill for $350, was told not in network but would reduce to this amount. Denied that I was told they were in network. Previous Doctor I saw in same office, both Cedars Doctors was paid about $200 from my insurance company (this included some of my deductible). I have spent about a year calling to come to agreement with office, I offered to pay half of the $350, they have refused to accept this payment in full and are sending me to collections. First they overcharge me, they deny telling me they were in network and then refuse to work with me to get paid. WIth COVID and people having hard times you would think someone would have a heart- clearly not this office! Would never refer this doctor not only for what happened regarding billing, but also because he was only Dr I sought out opinion who recommend fusion- turns out I did not need fusion- had nerve mangling C4/5- had removed by amazing neurosurgeon, and doing well. read more

I was born with scoliosis and had managed to avoid back surgery, but at 72, I found that the combination of old age and arthritis was causing my condition to deteriorate rapidly (particularly in the last 2 years). When I was younger, I was about 6'3" and before surgery I had shrunk (compressed) to 5'10" and was in a lot of pain. I was having trouble just getting out of bed and athletic activities I had done my whole life were excruciatingly painful. I still continued to snow ski, play paddle tennis, racquetball, and softball but I suffered and my abilities were greatly compromised. I found even swimming to be painful and so I began to research physicians and treatment options. I saw 4 different surgeons but my wife and I agreed that Dr. Kropf had all the qualities we were looking for and we both felt comfortable and confident with Dr. Kropf and the entire Cedars Sinai Team. I was facing major spinal surgery and major surgery is always a risk so I wanted the best and we chose Dr Kropf. In mid-July of 2021 I had the first surgery, an Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) and 3 days later I had a spinal fusion that required 4 rods and too many screws to count. Make no mistake about it, that first week I was in more pain than I had ever imagined possible (Think of a really bad car accident & on a pain scale of 1-10 this was more like a 99). Dr Kropf had repeatedly warned me but the intense pain was still a shock. The first day a walk to the door of the hospital room and back on a walker had my whole body sweating & shaking and every time I tried to stand, I felt light headed but I kept with the program and continued to walk daily. Each day I tried to walk a longer distance and more frequently and by the time I was released to the inpatient rehab center I was able to walk easily and was walking 4-5 times daily. Every day I was in the hospital, Dr. Kropf or one of his staff and all the surgeons on his Cedars team checked on my progress (This included the other spinal surgeon, my Internist & the vascular surgeon). Directly from the hospital I was transferred to Cedars Sinai inpatient Rehab center. Cedars took care of everything. I spent 2 weeks in rehab which was essentially wake up, have breakfast, then 2 separate PT/OT sessions then nap before lunch, eat and 2 more sessions of PT/OT, have dinner and get some rest to do it all over again the next day. I am home now (it's been almost 4 months) and I still walk daily and workout for about 1/2 hour each day. I am pain free and need to thank Dr. Kropf for giving me my life back. All the money in the world could not give me more time or a better quality of life, but Dr. Kropf gave me both. read more

After one and a half year of dealing with an excruciating pain and crazy symptoms after his laminectomy, a new MRI just showed how much of a mess dr. Kropf left in my husband's back: lots of bone fragments that they will have to go in again to remove it. The doctor told us last week that Kropf has been so aggressive at my husband's spine that the nerves were severely damaged and there were lots of bone fragments left it behind. Since his failed double laminectomy, my husband could never sit again, could never wear shoes again, can barely leave our bedroom to go to doctor's appointments, and is seeing his life being taken away from him slowly. If I needed surgery of the type Dr. Kropf is in experienced in I would head straight to him. No other.

I first met Dr. Kropf & Andree -his wife and his RN- in 1999. I was only 24 and had bad symptoms of a herniated disc. He had me do additional MRIs, CTs, Xrays, to what I already had and brought with me, but nothing showed that I had a herniated disc. I had such badly numbing legs that kept me up all night. I was almost begging him to just cut me open and check. We both were frustrated at that point. I was having problems since I was 17 after falling and no doctors believed me, including Dr. Kropf. Of course they didn't, I was way too young to have such problem and no MRI, CT showed any proof of what I said. Then, he sent me to have a Nerve Conduction Study done. Going over the results, he said: there is enough weakness of the nerve to cause some problem but not enough to cause what you are describing. If you want, I'll open up the area, perform a Laminotomy to take care of the problem I can see you are having, and see what else is there. But I won't promise that all will get much better. I said yes I want you to do that! Dr. Kropf ended up having to do a Microdiscectomy, Foraminotomy & Laminectomy. After surgery he said and I quote: " Surgery went well, however, you had such a massive herniation hiding behind your tailbone which didn't show on any images, that in within a year or two you'll need a fusion surgery" "And I am very sorry that I didn't believe you and that you had to go through such process!" Now, I know NO Doctor that would apologize, especially to a 25 year old. Even if you can beat a "sorry" out of them, it would be a sluggish, "hey, sorry"... Dr. Kropf's " I am very sorry" was heartfelt and was his very first words as I was waking up from anesthesia . It was very comforting to wake up to that! Probably that's the reason why I remember it so well. There was a discussion of a second surgery in year 2013. But in the end I was not ready and was able to manage until now. My ways didn't help me any longer so I decided it's time. I was received with the warmest welcome by his wife and RN Andree saying " Oh my god it is really you. When I saw your name -spelling- I knew it was you" .. I was remembered after all these years. Dr. Kropf couldn't believe I made it this long without that 2nd surgery and even offered other solutions. I thanked him for that but declined and said "its surgery time". He said that he believes that a Revision Foraminotomy & Laminotomy will help ease my symptoms about 90%. According to the Xrays, my vertebrae fused on its own and a fusion surgery is no longer needed. I am not going into more details but there were surprises waiting for him again, once the incision was made. But Dr. Kropf must have brought good/healing energy to the surgery table, with a steady hand I might add, because I woke after the procedure with no pain at the surgery site. It's been 2 weeks since and still no pain there & symptoms are also only felt after overdoing it. (It is easy to do that when there is no pain to remind you "hey you just had surgery ). We will see at the 2nd Post-op visit in 2 months how successful the procedure was. I would also like to mention 2 of his staff that I was in constant touch with: Jennifer, his Surgical Coordinator & Yna, his Executive Assistant. They both went out of their ways to help, explain and follow up with me even after surgery. I am certain that all other members of Dr. Kropf's staff are equally nice and helpful, only I didn't have the luck to interact with them. If my review isn't saying enough of Dr. Kropf's integrity & skills than this will: I don't live in CA anymore and flew across the country to a Surgeon from 20 years ago, and on top of the extra expense of travel & stay in LA for a week, I also had to cough up In and also Out of Network Deductibles as the only one place that is In-Network with my Insurance Company is the Surgery Center. But no regrets (nor fun & vacation for a while...) -money is just money- I was willing to pay the price to get a worry-free procedure from the best I know. read more

I saw Dr. Kropf for a 50 year old injury to my neck that was the result of a horseback riding accident. 10 years later I experienced horrendous pain in my right arm making it almost useless. I saw many doctors in 1981 and 1986 about this issue and no one I saw knew what to do. I did finally get some relief with chiropractic treatment after 6 years and was stable for a long time. About 3 years ago I started having trouble with my left arm as well as the right arm and went through pain management and several orthopedic doctors without improvement. I went to Dr. Kropf and he immediately told me that my neck was dangerously unstable and needed to be fixed very soon. He performed cervical fusion from C3 to T1 (5 discs) 10 months ago. I worked hard on the physical therapy and I have healed beautifully. Not only did the pain in my arms go away, everything got better. I can sleep on my right side and put dishes away (above my head) with my right hand. I had not been able to do either of those things for 40+ years! I've required two different back surgeries over the last 5 years due to work related incidents. The first in 2014 was a single level fusion and the second in 2019, was a discectomy. Both times I was lucky to have Doctor Kropf and his professional staff treat me. I'm returning to work tomorrow full duty for the second time. I was treated great by everyone on his team and most of all my issues we're resolved to almost perfection. I'm at a level 1 pain now down from a 10! He is one of the top spinal surgeons in California (possibly the US) and I was lucky to have him fix me. I have recommended him to many people and will continue to recommend him to others. This rating is more about awareness than anything: 1 year ago I started having electrical nerve type issues down one leg. I had garden variety back pain for a year or so before this. I have tried PT, Chiropractor, acupuncture, and a variety of meds with no relief. I finally succumbed to an epidural steroid injection into my lower back with another reputable Orthopedic Surgeon. This is where things went bad. 4 days or so after the injection I started having intense debilitating electrical activity down my leg and into my feet. The electrical shocks and pain were so bad I almost couldn't move. Lying down or sitting compounded the problem. No med would touch the pain or make it go away. Note: epidural spinal injections are not FDA approved and not recommended to be injected into your spinal canal although Dr's get away with this procedure because they use off-label products. They are approved in muscles and joints only (knees ). The increase in spinal injections is related to the opioid crisis. Many Dr's would now rather inject you than prescribe meds. After the epidural I was desperate for relief and sought the help of Dr Kropf as a 2nd opinion. Dr Kropf and staff seemed friendly and concerned and he advised that I needed a double fusion because of pressure on the nerves. In my desperate situation and not wanting to have such a major surgery, he gave me the option of a 2 section laminectomy. We rushed this through do to my pain and a few weeks later had surgery. The second I awoke I knew something was wrong. He tried to discharge me immediatley and the RN at Cedars talked him out of it. I stayed the night in horrific pain and the next day they discharged me saying this was normal. After the hour drive home I walked in the door and felt ill. My temp was 104!. I immediatley went to an ER where they sent me back to Cedars to be admitted. The sepsis destroyed me for a week while in the hospital. All MD's seeing me were confused and basically they pumped me full of antibiotics. After a week I came home and the fever continued for another week or two. In the next 12 weeks my symptoms became worse and worse. I could not sit or lie down and was tortured daily. Upon my next few follow up appointments, I noticed that Dr Kropf was throwing his hands in the air. He actually said he has never seen this before, this I don't believe. He then started farming me out to others. As weeks went by I saw a pain management MD who only wanted to do more injections and install a spinal cord stimulator. In other words, they didn't know what to do and wanted to make more money at my expense. The main med they prescribed was Lyrica which destroys your mind and does nothing. I am getting off this med now and it takes months of weaning because the withdrawals are so bad. I have since been to a Neuro Surgeon, another Orthopedic Surgeon, and an Internist who have all diagnosed me with Adhesive Arachnoiditis ( AA ) and CRPS. AA is caused usually by epidural injections or spinal surgeries and is usually diagnosed by a contrast MRI. There is no cure for AA and you are in insufferable debilitating pain for life. This is more common than you think and Dr's DO NOT like talking about it. My complaints: -Dr Kropf should have seen this as a possibility and done an MRI with contrast prior to doing any surgery. -Dr Kropf should have seen that I was not progressing and used options such as high dose steroids early on to try and slow the process of AA. -Dr Kropf should have communicated this as a possibility. Instead he became non responsive and he did not want to deal with me anymore. -With 25 years experience Dr Kropf should have suspected that I had AA. This was something I investigated on my own was finally diagnosed by other MD's. This should never have happened. Important issues for future patients: -Epidural's/surgeries are not the cure all and pose huge risks. -Dr Kropf will be helpful only if things go well. -Do your homework on epidurals. -If you have any of these symptoms post epidural or surgery, they're not normal and you need to act immediatley. You are your best and only advocate. -The worse thing you can do if you suspect AA is to let anyone touch your spine. Things will get worse. -Before any procedure investigate AA. There is plenty to see. -Lyrica is a horrible drug. Look this up, their are "I survived Lyrica" groups all over the internet. read more

I had been suffering terribly with my right hand and went to see my carpal tunnel doctor for a shot of cortisone. He told me that is was not carpal tunnel and that I needed to see a neurosurgeon; the pain was coming from my neck. I got referrals from my internist and a few people that I know. I had recent MRI's and CT scans with me as I went in for consultations. One spinal surgeon wanted me to book the surgery while I was there and was pushing me hard without even doing more tests. The next doctor that I saw had no bedside manner and did not explain to me his diagnosis and any options that I had. He spent no time with me, yet was ready to operate. Jennifer got me an appointment with Dr. Kropf pretty fast, and when I went for my consultation I had all my records with me and he took the time to discuss with me what he saw. I had cervical spinal stenosis and he would have to cut into my throat to fuse three levels that were bone on bone. He said that he needed for me to have a few more tests done and x-rays so he could see exactly what was going on. He is conservative in his approach and takes his time to make sure that he has all the information that he needs before he jumps into operating. He knew what was wrong with me and it was going to be a tough surgery as I would be in a neck brace for quite a while and could not drive, exercise or do anything. He left nothing out and I appreciated his straight forwardness. The surgery was scheduled and I was so happy to have found a surgeon that I trusted. He has a wonderful bedside manner, is very calm and does the best job ever. He is a brilliant surgeon that is unsurpassed by any surgeon that I have ever known, been operated on by or heard about (thanks Jennifer!) and truly cares about his patients. I saw him yesterday, 3 months post op, and after taking x-rays, everything fused correctly and he cut so precisely that you could barely see any scar on my neck. I see him again in 8 weeks. The brace is off, I can now drive and exercise lightly. I am so grateful to him and his wonderful staff for giving me my life back!! There aren't enough words to describe how grateful I am to him and his expertise. He is the doctor that you would want to see when it comes to your neck, spine, back and anything else that relates to his skills. I highly recommend him. He is the best!! I was schedule with Dr. Kropf on 4/15/19 for back surgery and come to find out he used other surgent then I told about and used Dr. Hill with only 7 years experience after asking him before surgery he stated that Dr. Kropf, Dr. McGinity and Dr. Wagner was going to do this surgery. Dr. Hill name was not give to me and if had I would not have gone through the surgery as I am a type A personality and want to know who is working on me and was not given the opportunity to vet him. There were complication with this surgery but no answer my question on what Dr. Hill did and was told to go back to Dr. Kropf and he said that he assisted but I thought that was Dr. McGinity roll as his fellow and was not listed on the OR report. I have had previous and post surgery with Dr. Kropf and he is great and would recommend him, the staff is great and very responsive. But make sure you ask the question who is going to be there to prevent this type of misunderstanding read more

I can credit Dr Kropf for giving me my life back. He is an amazing doctor and I will be forever grateful I was referred to him . I had severe scoliosis and had an anterior lumbar interbody fusion, extreme lateral interbody fusion, posterior spinal fusion, laminectomy and multilevel osteotomy. Everything went as planned and I am as good as new. My recovery was long and it was hard at times about seven months, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. Yesterday I had a visit with kropf regarding my scoliosis condition. His nurse was attentive, guided me and thoughtfully followed up with me after the visit. Kropf was nurturing, insightful, answered all my questions and concerns, and I felt very cared for. I myself work in healthcare and understand the pressures that the healthcare system places on clinicians, ie. Less time to actually see and spend time with patients. I didn't feel that there. I walked away feeling heard, reassured, nurtured and an overall very loving energy. Dr. Kropf took me on ashes patient after my surgeon Dr Dawson passed away. My first surgery with him was in 2004. My first surgery in my life was when I was 18 in 1974 for scoliosis. That surgery was done thru a military hospital since my dad was in the Air Force. I have had a total of 17 surgeries due to degeneration or my falling and fracturing my spine. In 2015 I made the mistake of allowing an HMO surgeon in Rancho Mirage to operate since he was merely taking out some of my hardware. Unfortunately he sent me home the next day and I blacked out that night fracturing my spine when I hit the tile floor. The ER doctor said nothing was wrong. And when I saw the HMO doctor he said there was a tiny crack that he would just put bone in without hardware and then remove the rest of my hardware. He failed to see the two compressed fractures so removing the hardware caused my spine to tip forward and to the right. When I went back and told him that there was a problem that the pain was not gone. He told me he was done doing surgery on me. When I said my spine tipped he said it couldn't happen. And a swelling on my left side that developed and was documented by the home healthcare nurse where she contacted him he said don't worry about it. So when I mentioned it he said it wasn't from his surgery. He blew me off to pain management. I went 2nd opinion doctor thru the hmo that scared me that he had to run ten tests to figure out what was wrong. So I asked my cousin to drive me up to LA so I could see Dr Kropf. He took one look at my CT scan said there were two fractures and it would require two surgeries one to fix the fractures and one to fix the deformity that had occurred. I didn't have to say anything. After that I swore I would never let any other surgeon touch me, only Dr Kropf. He is caring and the best. I have seen many spinal doctors over the last 45 years. So many of them I found never listened to the pain I was describing. Some said that can't be. As my surgeon passed away learned my spine fractured but I would hold up to get into see him. I am not someone who lays down screaming and I try to just hold up to the pain until it is determined what happened. This surgeon said to me after that that when I walk into his office and say I am in pain it means you are in pain. The tests had sealed up my fracture and it wasn't learned until I was operated on. So Dr Kropf has never questioned when I describe the pain I am having. That respect and compassion has meant a lot to me. Because in 2015 dealing with hmo doctors and trying to get them to do something because the pain was so bad I thought several times paralysis was setting in. I held up 7 months because I had to switch to a PPO before Dr Kropf could perform the first surgery and correct the fractures. And unfortunately we could not get me back to the way I had been before I let the hmo surgeon operate. It is comforting to know that Dr Kropf listens to me and finds the problem and gives 200% to making things better. His staff including his wife, Andre, are all so helpful and caring as well. After all these years with my spinal problems I would not trust anyone except Dr Kropf to perform surgery. My regret is that I let an hmo surgeon operate on me. So if you want a spinal surgeon who is very skilled, compassionate, and listens, and you want to feel confident in going in for surgery then Dr Kropf is someone you should choose. read more
