I saw many surgeons for my cervical spine issues. The who's who of spine surgery in LA. All of them were impressive and at the top of their field. But even among this elite group, Dr. Ehsan Saadat stood out as the one doctor who I would entrust with my spine, and by extension my life and the future of my children, above everyone else. As a scientist myself, I know a remarkable and detail-oriented mind when I see one, and Dr. Saadat is as good at it gets. My case was not straightforward: I saw 6 different and distinguished spine surgeons and got almost as many different opinions on what to do. Dr. Saadat spent a lot of time thinking through my case, he referenced the latest scientific evidence, and he consulted his trusted colleagues on my behalf to double check his own judgement. He also spent a lot of time emailing back and forth with me to discuss the pros and cons of various approaches rigorously, patiently, and honestly. On a human level, It became clear pretty early that Dr Saadat is caring and generous with his time and attention. I can imagine that when you do something as demanding as spine surgery for a living, day in and day out, then no matter your level of empathy it becomes easy to forget that what is routine to you can be one of the most scary and nerve-wracking experiences for each of your patients. Leading up to surgery, Dr. Saadat made the time to sit down with me and explain in detail what he was planning to do. He had a well-thought out answer to every question I asked, and I asked many as I had spent the past two months reading and watching everything I can find related to my spine condition. It became clear that he left no stone unturned in preparing his team for my surgery, and making sure I'm comfortable with everything he planned to do in there. He explained how he will use every modality of Neuro monitoring available, how he would decide which size and angle of implant he would use based on what he finds when he goes in there, and many other details. Best of all, he assembled a team in place that would be able to handle every contingency, and he told me about them. Notably, he explained how he will be joined by an exceptional neurosurgeon colleague in the operating room; this turned out to be a prescient judgement call, as they discovered dangerous adhesions to the covering of my spinal cord once they opened me up, a grave challenge that Dr. Saadat's all-star team overcame with precision. Without Dr. Saadat's meticulous preparation, his refusal to leave anything to chance, and his dedication to leaving no stone unturned for the benefit of his patients, I might have been left permanently disabled or worse. I am thankful I chose someone who was able to keep me safe, give me my life back, and safeguard for my children their father. On surgery day, I experienced no hardships. The last thing I remember before surgery was joking around with the anaesthesia team as they injected something in my IV, and the next moment I was talking to Dr. Saadat as he was checking my strength after surgery while I told him how I was feeling remarkably little pain. I was released 24 hours later after staying overnight for observation, and left the hospital virtually pain free feeling as if nothing happened, having to consciously remind myself to take it easy. Once all was said and done, my surgical outcome has been great, and I'm continuing to recover nicely with all my pain and symptoms seemingly a thing of the past. Dr. Saadat is a phenomenal orthopedic surgeon. He did extensive neck surgery on my husband which completely changed his life for the better. He did my lower back decompression surgery in September 2024 and it has greatly improved my way of life. I had major numbness and tingling that ran down the backside of both my glute area, legs and toes which was causing me a lot of aggravation and pain making it so I could not do a lot of activities of every-day life. I had years of steroid injections which would temporarily help but never relieved the problem. Dr. Saadat did my surgery at DISC in Marina Del Rey and that was a great experience as well. From the moment I woke up from surgery, I felt an immense release in pressure in my problem areas. I will say that I do have a sit-down job which is not good for your piriformis muscle and hip flexor muscles so long periods of sitting cause those muscles to become extremely tight which in turn causes compression to your sciatica nerve which is what essentially contributes to the tingling and numbness that goes down the front side of your hip area and quads. After my surgery, I did feel the pressure release down my back side but I still had a little bit of discomfort down the front side of my hips and quads so Dr. Saadat had me continue my PT. Take into account that PT is entirely the patient's responsibility because you really have to work at getting your muscles back to normal and do things to help loosen those tight muscles. All the surgery in the world is not going to help that situation. I will say that regular stretching, maintaining good posture and light exercises with pressure point massages on the piriformis and hip flexor muscles really help loosen up and strengthen those muscles over time. A sedentary lifestyle contributes to muscle tightness, so make an effort to move your body. It has been 6 months since my surgery and almost all my problems are gone. I am able to walk, lightly work out, sleep at night and do fun activities with my husband. Dr. Saadat has an impeccable way of following up with his patients after surgery and that is something people should take into consideration when having surgery because not all doctors do this from previous bad experiences. He is the best and my only regret is that we didn't find him sooner. I had two surgeries from Dr Saadat. I was very disappointed with both. He seemed to have good reviews. I saw him for weakness in my legs, lower back pain and poor balance. He said the weakness and poor balance might not be just from my back but the neck as well. I had neck surgery first. It has been almost a year and I have stiffness, and pain every day. About 2 months later he operated on my lower back. When I woke up from the surgery my right foot was paralyzed. I could not move it at all. Now after months of physical therapy I can only raise it about a third or half as much as the other foot. The pain is less but my balance and the weakness are worse than before the surgery. After several months he ordered a nerve conduction study. It then took a couple months to get an appointment for that. Once I got it he would not answer my texts, emails or phone calls to get the results from him. His assistant, who prior to this had usually responded quickly to my enquiries, no longer would answer me either. Finally after 6 weeks or so I sent a text threatening to to to the state medical board and get a lawyer he responded. The he said the area of damage to my spine was and area he did not touch. If you are nervous or on the fence about surgery with Dr. Saadat, I am walking proof you do not need to be! You will wish you didn't wait to move forward with your care. I recommend him 100% and am very grateful for his life changing knowledge, care, and honesty to completely change and better my life. He was worth the 1000 mile journey and will always be one of the best doctors I have ever met! I have had 4 massive back surgeries over a 15 year period. Including L4,L5, and S1 being fused at 28 years old, (told I would have to have a repeat one done in 10 years). I had a spinal cord stimulator put in at 34 years old. The stimulator helped pain, by maybe 50%. But the pain started getting worse at L3. I had severe drop foot and neuropathy from lower spine issues and was told I had nerve canal damage that caused my drop foot, and nothing could be done for it, (except wear a foot brace, which I did). Fast forward to age 39, the pain was getting so unbearable I decided it was time to see what needed to happen next. I started doing research on what kind of procedures were available, what might be a new option to help me. Dr Saadat's name came up several times. I went to my home town doctor who assured me I was not a candidate for the procedures I found. He wanted to do a repeat surgery of what I have already had. (I was told that I would need that 12 years ago). But with medical advancements being made daily, I was not ready to accept what I was being told. I started searching out of my town, just to realize what I was wanting done, wasn't really being offered in my state of Oregon. A couple places were, but did not take my insurance. So I decided I wanted to see Dr. Saadat, even just for an out of pocket appointment to get his opinion on my situation. Surprisingly he did accept my insurance, so I made the 1000 mile trip to see him. I have never had a doctor take more time and consideration to explain what exactly was going on with my spine and nerves. He showed me, and explained to me, every little bit of my MRI. He also informed me that the procedure I was wanting was not a good fit for me, and explained why. But then patiently explained to me what options I do have. Which was mind blowing and way better than I was able to even find upon researching on my own. I was so nervous to move forward with this procedure because of the risks. Dr. Saadat assured me that the risks were very low, but my mind made them feel huge. I decided to move forward with the procedure. (It took close to a year, start to finish planning to the actual surgery). It was well worth the time and energy it took to make this happen. I wish I would have not waited so long!! My operation was a 2 part, 5.5 hour surgery. I spent 4 days at Cedars Sinai, and was up walking within hours after my operation. Within a week, I started to realize my pain I had pre surgery was gone. (I was obviously very sore from a massive surgery), however, the surgery pain was minute compared to the pain I had before. Around day 10 post surgery, I no longer needed pain meds. Occasional Tylenol and muscle relaxers were sufficient enough. I made sure to listen to the doctors orders of no bending lifting or twisting. And made sure to walk every day, about a mile or 2. Lots of naps to help me recover as well. But around 1 week after the surgery, my wife noticed I was no longer dragging my foot. My drop foot has disappeared! I have regained about 75% strength in my leg and foot. My pain is 80% better, which is something I never thought was possible! I am so disappointed with Dr. Saadat, I thought he was a top doctor in his field. I found out he wasn't an honest person, first his diagnostic, it was to put two plates in my lower spine which would have got me less flexible and no more sports, so I got a second opinion from another doctor, and he told me I might need one plate only but first he recommended doing PRP treatment and my pain is gone now, I have bulged herniated discs and was in pain constantly for years !!! Its gone I don't have to lay down all the time any longer ! So Saadat went for the most expensive option which is full blown surgery and ad as many plates as possible. That's the worst opinion I got from doctors... Then he gave me a back compression garment when I broke my back, I asked his assistant how much it was and she told me "don't worry its covered by the insurance" so I took it. Later I saw I owe the doctor hundreds of dollars just for the garment so looking in the details of my insurance I see the doctor charged $1500 for a back compression garment !!! I went online and found the brand and model number on Amazon and it's bellow $200 so I contacted the doctor and after questioning his honestly because after my insurance I still owe him nearly a thousand dollar for visit and now I have to pay $400-500 for a compress thats twice cheaper and Amazon overnight it - After asking a bunch of question, Saadat is not responding. I called and emailed his office many times but no response from Dr. Saadat. This guy is a crook - I also contacted his billing many times to readjust the price of the compress but Dr. Saadat doesn't want to hear about it, he ignores me. After this if you still want to be treated by this doctor for something as important as the spine good luck - I think spine surgeon is like a tatoo artist, being honest is primordial ! Prior reviews to dr. Saadat were helpful to me and I would like to contribute with my own reviews. I had a bad case of central stenosis with progressive symptoms of leg pain and limited mobility for past two years. I tried all possible non-surgical options with no resolution to my leg pain and limited mobility. I eventually decided to do the surgery with Dr Saadat based on reviews and after an appointment with him where he explained my case and the surgery option and what to expect from it. Dr. Saadat did the surgery which is bilateral Laminotomy for my L4-L5 4 weeks ago. I am feeling great and had no nerve pain right after the surgery. I am walking now as much as I want and going through the planned recovery. D. Saddat is a top surgeon and a nice guy too who cares and answers any question (he evens responds to text and email questions). It has never happened to me to sit behind my desk and write a review for a doctor unless being badly hurt emotionally and physically to do so. I visited this doctor in July 2023 for my severe back pain, at the time of the visit I gave my MRI images Disk to the nurse to download. In the exam room the doctor said that he was unable to see my MRI images clearly ( later I went to the radiologist and asked him why my MRI images were not readable? Radiologist showed me sharp images and explained the reason that Dr. Saadat was unable to see the images because they failed to download the disk appropriately) at that time Dr. Saadat relied only on the X-Rays, revealing numerous disks and spine stenosis which I was already aware of and for that reason I went to him seeking treatment. The visit took only 5 minutes, he said he will email me a prescriptions for pain killer and referral for bone density, I asked him, do you have my email address? he looked at the chart and read my email address which was correct and he left the exam room. I waited and waited for prescriptions but I have not received any responses, no phone call, no massage, and no email , I called his office several times and listened to music hours and hours and finally I spoke with Susan and Jesus asking for those proscriptions and gave them over and over my email address, but still receive no responses!! . Finally after 3 weeks of waiting, the pain was killing me, I decided to travel 25 miles from my residence to his office to talk to him that I needed immediate attention and I was suffering from tremendous pain. On August 15, 2023 when I arrived to his office, I asked the receptionist that I wanted to see the doctor for only few minutes to get proscriptions and I did not need to go to the exam room. I silently sat in his waiting room for four hours from 12 noon to 4 pm in the same chair, I repeatedly begging to see the doctor for only 2 minutes to get pain killer medications or proscription, they said he is busy with patients, I said, I will stay here until he finishes with his patients, but him, not only came to me or to the front desk to help or show his sympathy, he instead sent me an army of SECURITIES !!!!!!! to remove me from the office!!!!!! You can imagine the depth of his irresponsibility and his incompetence. His behavior is totally against principle, ethics, and discipline in medical practice. The goal of disciplinary review is both to protect patients and to help and receive appropriate assistance to practice safely and ethically, his misconduct and ignoring his obligations put patients at risk is recognized in both the unethical standards of profession and in law. In the end, Cedar Sinai including their numerous satellite offices hairs low quality doctors and gives them 50 patients a day, it means 5 minutes per patient, this money making business and such conduct undermines the public confidence in medical practice. My wife and I met Dr. Saadat 2 years ago when another Surgeon was not available. That was our lucky day. We are Ballroom Instructors and she was unable to dance because of the broken vertebrae in her back. She needed Back Surgery on her L4 and L5. The surgery was complicated and Dr. Saadat was comfortable with task at hand. He decided to perform the surgery on two separate days. First was on a Monday and the other on the next Friday. Both Surgeries went without a hitch - meaning they both were Successful. She stayed in the Hospital for another week to handle any reactions. As it turned out, there were minor reactions and she came home. With Physical Therapy for the next month, She was able to walk and most importantly Ballroom Dance. In February of 2021 I was struck by an SUV on a pedestrian walkway in West LA. I spent the next 6 months seeing several orthopedic surgeons in Los Angeles County, at UCLA, and in private practice. I had multiple reasons to trust and select Dr. Saadat as my orthopedist. One, he respected my time, he wasn't late to my initial appointment and still does. Two, his education is important but his bedside manner is more important. He is warm and comforting. He is brilliant, but his calm angelic demeanor eases whatever pain you are struggling with not add stress to the process. Three, his support staff Aubrey, Tony, and all the nurses are on their A game. through out the past year that I have been under his care, he and his professional support team made the process less stressful and more manageable, especially when you are in constant pain. The fourth reason, he collaborates with my neurosurgeon and pain management doctor to truly offer me the best care possible. After my surgery, he actually called me the next day to see how I was doing. This type of practice and care may have existed 50 years ago but never happens in 2022 but just shows his genuine respect, care, and integrity for his practice. He is drastically different from other surgeons I've seen because he listened and really cared about my overall health. He did not rush me into surgery as many surgeons do, I'm still under his care and completely trust his guidance. I've suffered from spinal disease for the past 6 years while living in London and had 9 surgeries. One of the surgeries caused hematoma so I had to have two surgeries on the same day! And I suspect that I've had other surgical failures. I regret very much that I didn't learn about Dr.Saadat earlier; if I had been treated by him early on, I believe that I would have walked better and suffered less. After failing physical therapy, getting an epidural that lasted maybe 3 days, and ditching my initial chosen surgeon who I just didn't vibe with, I hopped on Google and found Dr Saadat in Los Angeles. Not only did Dr. Saadat's credentials look great when I researched him, but I could tell right away in person Dr. Saadat was compassionate, qualified and very professional. I felt like I was in the best of hands. I left my first appointment elated. I felt like he listened to me. And that was huge. He is top notch. As a 31 year old woman who has never had surgery, never even been a hospital patient since I was born, I was terrified for anyone to operate on my spine. It kept me up every single night for a year. But one of the first things I told the nurse after my microdisectomy/spinal decompression with Dr. Saadat was, "why did I wait this long?" I immediately felt relief in my hip. There was no more stabbing weird grinding pain from the nerve and I also felt relief in my right leg which had the radiating pain. Surgery pain is no where near the pain I felt daily before surgery. I am going on 3 months post op and everyday is better than the last. With tools to help me that I've learned from physical therapy after surgery and time passing, I feel the surgery was very successful. Let me say it again, this doctor is very attentive and I absolutely recommend to everyone that have an issue that requires service of this specialist. He is not someone that will rush and recommend that you get a surgery. He also do not rush through an appointment, he will absolutely take his time and analyze and explain to you everything. By the time you leave his office you will know exactly what you have and what you don't have and what your options are. I was having excruciating, burning pain down my right leg that prevented me from walking. Following an MRI, Dr. Ehsan Saadat correctly mapped my pain up to my L3-L4 disc. He patiently helped me understand and showed me how a bulging herniated disc was putting pressure on the nerve root exiting my spinal cord on the right side, and told me he was confident that surgery to remove the "huge" bulge would relieve my pain. However, he reviewed all options with me to the proposed Microdiscectomy, and I decided to first try a spinal injection to reduce the inflammation and pressure on the nerve. Unfortunately, the epidural had no effect on relieving my pain and I decided to move forward with the proposed surgery. My surgery was performed in April of 2021 at Precision Ambulatory Surgery Center, an affiliate of Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Saadat checked in with me before and after the procedure to provide reassurance and answer all additional questions that I had. He even called my wife to give her reassurance following surgery and to provide care instructions. The procedure was a complete success and I had no pain in my leg immediately following surgery. Aubrie is Doctor Saadat's "scheduling" assistant; however, she went way beyond that moniker to guide me through the myriad of procedural, insurance and surgical issues. It was a spinal decompression for L6. It was super successful, relieving my excruciating sciatic pain. Unfortunately, that wasn't the end of my story. Seven months later, I started having pain in L4 & L5. Not wasting a moment, I called his office and could barely wait for my appointment date. Because of my insurance, I urged the doctor to do my second surgery, as soon as possible. Once again, within three weeks, just as expected, I had another completely successful surgery. After the procedure, I was up walking without any sciatic pain! I'm three weeks post op, and everyday, I get stronger and have more energy to do things. Again, I'm so thankful, crying 'Happy tears'! I was referred to Dr. Saadat after developing a massive lumbar MRSA infection from a previous surgeon. He coordinated all the scans, checked in frequently with my infectious disease doc and made a horrible situation a bit more tolerable. Dr Saadat had to go back in a few months later and did lumbar fusion surgery and decompression surgery which have healed quite well. As I progress in physical therapy, everyone who sees my incision areas are amazed at how well the surgical site has healed. Excellent, thoughtful surgeon. Dr Saadat was the third surgeon I consulted for crippling arm pain and weakness and he was the only one of the three to insist on a second MRI since the first one was blurry. On that second scan he saw a bone spur that the other two surgeons missed and was able to suggest a less invasive, more conservative surgery, fusing only one level instead of 3. Dr. Saadat is an amazing spine surgeon who performed a complicated multi-level (T2- L5 S1) fusion on me along with another spine neurosurgeon & vascular surgeon (along with a team of knowledgeable & competent healthcare professionals.) I was so impressed by his expertise, competency, compassion, & bedside manner. Even though I live in Santa Barbara County, the drive to L.A. to Cedars Sinai Hospital was well worth it for the end result! I'd had two failed fusions by a different spine neurosurgeon & was in chronic pain for years post-op. The pain in my right lower back is now completely gone! I will start with the bottom line. When I woke up from my lumbar fusion surgery, pain that I had been dealing with for 10 years was completely gone. I had been managing it with opioids and steroid injections. Now the pain and drugs are gone from my life. December 2020 will be one year since my surgery and my life has improved tremendously. The biggest problem I had with my surgery was impatience. My 73 year old body is not magic, I am still recovering from the surgery. It is a slow, deliberate process. I went from being a very healthy person in the best physical condition of my life, working out two hours a day and practicing advanced yoga, when I herniated a disc at L5-S1. I tried medication, physical therapy, ice, heat and an epidural to alleviate the pain. Nothing worked, and the pain became so intolerable that I went from being extremely active to completely bedridden. Dr. Saadat through his expertise, knowledge and advice has made me feel so much better. I have a bulging disc in my back and when i first found Dr. Saadat my pain level was at a 10 or more. I had been suffering in pain for months prior. After his recommendations my pain is about a 3/4 and tolerable now.
