It's been a little over 10 years since the last time I allowed Dr. Brian Perri to lay hands on me. But knowing something wasn't right within me, I knew there was no one I trusted more than him to get to the bottom of my current condition. In the end, he determined that my condition had continued to affect my body, especially my spine, and not in a good way. Instead it had grown further in size until it started to crush my esophagus and vocal cords. X-rays, an MRI, and finally, CT scans told him all he needed to know, I needed a second surgery to scrap the brittle bone away from my spine, easing the pressure. That was the gist of my latest surgery. In addition, he discovered that my condition had calcified my sternum, leaving my ribs attached to it, pulling me inwards, putting additional pressure on my skeletal. Following many more months of physical therapy and pain management, in January 2020, I had to have a revision surgery on my cervical spine after suffering through nearly two years of neck pain and muscle spasms. My new surgeon stated he had to perform a deeper spinal decompression and that the existing artificial discs were loose. I feel much better now and I can actually move my neck and arm without any pain. I wish I never had this surgery in the first place. Exhaust all your options before surgery then do thorough research on the best surgeons. Then do more research. It matters. read more

I'm not much of a Yelper, however I wanted to post a review due to the fact the surgery done by Dr. Perri had such a significant impact on my life. Hopefully this review helps anybody out there that was stressing as much as I was to make an informed decision and get some relief. Over the span of the past 5 to 6 years my back pain was slowly becoming worse. I believe my pain started due to my job (first responder) and was only held at bay by an active and fit lifestyle. As my back soreness morphed to sciatica, I began seeking chiropractic treatment and researching online for ways to slow down the disc degeneration of my L5 - S1. These techniques bought me a couple of more years, however I ultimately begin feeling numbness and loss of motor control in my right leg and right foot. At this point, fearing permanent nerve damage, I began looking for surgical options. If you research enough, you will realize the artificial disc replacement is fast becoming the preferred choice for symptomatic disc disease. A lot of people will tell you to avoid back surgery because if they cut you once, they will keep cutting you for years to come. I believe this may be true for a fusion as research indicates somewhere between five and eight years post, the possibility of an adjacent level disc herniation/degeneration becomes a real possibility. I don't think this happens in every case, so if you are having a fusion please don't panic. I learned that I was a candidate for an artificial disc replacement. A friend recommended Dr. Perri. This particular friend had to have a multiple level fusion revision and an artificial disc replacement. According to her, Dr. Perri was a miracle worker. The whole process moves very quickly, the staff was excellent, I really enjoyed speaking with Dr. Perri. He was out of Network, I believe at the time of this review he was only accepting Blue Shield. (Not Blue Cross - Blue Shield, only Blue Shield) my out-of-pocket costs were somewhere around $17k. I only mention that because people on Yelp seem to be afraid to list cost, but as a patient I found the financial part of it very important. This surgery was worth every penny. On the day of the surgery I arrived at the DOCs Hospital. It is a small boutique hospital. The staff were excellent. I believe my surgery lasted about 3 to 4 hours. Dr. Perri initially thought he would have to make incisions on my front and back, however, thanks to the use of robotics he only needed to cut my front. My incision is just below my belly button, it is about 3 inches long. When I woke up I immediately felt relief. I was walking three hours after surgery. Fast forward to four days after surgery I was able to walk 3 miles. Prior to surgery I could not walk farther than a half mile before I started feeling numbness in my leg. I worked up to walking 8 miles in the first two weeks, zero issues. I am now just two months postop. I have been cleared to go back to work without restrictions. I have zero back pain, and zero sciatica. I feel like I am 25 again. I am making lifestyle adjustments to take things easier on my back, as I don't want there to be any problems. However I feel like I could do anything I did 10 years ago fitness wise. I should note, I am about 6'4 and a little bit over 300 pounds. My size was a concern to some doctors regarding the use of a mechanical device. If this thing breaks in the near future I will update my review. As for now it feels totally solid. If you are a candidate for artificial disc replacement and you are experiencing a loss of motor function or extreme pain, don't wait any longer in my opinion, get it done as you will feel a great amount of relief. I honestly don't know how to put into words how Dr. Brian and his phenomenal team have impacted my life. I am going into my 3rd week of recovery and I feel incredible. During Covid my gym shut down (as I know many did) and never re-opened. I started walking a lot and I started getting these shooting pains down the backs of my legs which had never happened before. I was then diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis and it became progressively worse. Just at the end of the past year I started going numb from my waist down and I went to my Rheumatologist, while they were doing the proper testing I ended up have gallbladder issues and ended up getting my gallbladder removed. Moving on I had tests run regarding my numbness and finally got some answers and my report was discouraging and I reached out to a friend who is a Doctor and he got me in touch with brother who is Dr. Brian, and this is how to I got to this point of taking back my life. We had a consultation, he had me get tests done in my home town and I would send discs to him of my results and we made the decision that lumbar surgery was in my best interest. While scheduling surgery I had a sort of setback with issues in my cervical area. I developed numbness going down both my left and right arms into my hands and fingers, and immense pain in my left forearm. I have had neck issues previously but it was never simultainiously so I didn't think to mention it. I was encouraged by my Chiroprator to consult with Dr. Brian about this issue and as Dr. Homza has suspected it was my C6/C7 which it was. Obviously you will have different pain from where they were operating on you but it's a pain so different than the pain I had been living with these past few years. Brian Perri did a back fusion of my wife. After the operation,she was left with a drop foot and no back relief. After a week an X-ray was done which revealed that one of the screws he has put in was too long and was hitting a nerve, so another operation that week with a shorter screw. Six months later,she kept feeling pops in her back. Of course we went to a different surgeon who saw that all of the screws were loose and required not a fix but a totally new fusion sing the first didn't fuse at all. Perri was very nice but I'd never go to him again. read more

I cannot be more grateful to have met Dr. Perri and his team. Last November, my L5/S1 was so severely herniated I could not function. I could not sit, stand, walk, or lie down without pain. I stopped eating and drinking because doing so would require me to move. To get around the house, I crawled and rested in between destinations. I had also lost some sensation in my right calf and foot. I tried everything before surgery - steroids, chiropractors, epidurals, and physical therapy. Since none of the above treatments had restored sensation in my foot, it was clear I needed surgery to remove the part of the disc that was compressing my nerve or I would have permanent nerve damage. I wept like my life was over. From scheduling the consultation, to surgery prep, surgery, post op check-in and rehabilitation, Dr. Perri and his team have been top notch. I had surgery with Dr. Brian Perri January 4, 2020 I needed discs replaced and to fuse a fractured sacrum that grew back wrong. I got an x-ray and was told I would be fine I walked around for many years with a fractured sacrum. As a child I had curvature of the spine and also suffered from spinal meningitis. I've exercised all my life five days a week but with age came degeneration. After years of epidurals and Pilates I searched for six months for the right doctor. I choosing Dr. Brian Perri. Through MRIs and CT scans he figured out what was wrong. Now before I continue let me say I have no pain and am in good condition physically. Visually is another story. Dr. Perri gave me Choices but he leaned towards going in through my belly button. He said it was the best surgery with the least discomfort and said the scar would be very small vs going in through my back which would be a larger scar and uncomfortable. I was nervous. He said that insurance wouldn't cover it but that we could try submitting it. He told me he had done several and it was the way to go. Insurance turned me down but I was convinced. He assured me my stomach would be flat and that if I was to get a plastic surgeon the bellybutton would look beautiful. Unfortunately that was not the case. I let Dr. Perri know right away that things did not look normal. ImI had a lump and my belly button looked too small. He said that was normal that it would flatten out within months and everything would settle in to place. Two weeks after my surgery Dr. Perri took off for Chinese new year. I thought it was irresponsible for a doctor to leave a patient right after surgery without leaving me with another doctor. Unfortunately for Dr. Perri he was sent home Covid was blowing up. I was not able to get a hold of anybody be it him or his staff. It was very difficult during Covid I understand that but there should've been somebody that I could talk to. Finally I was able to get someone on the phone and came in. Once again he assured me that it would settle. A year went by I was doing tons of PT. A year went by still all the same issues. There were three doctors in the operating room that day. Gastro doctor plastic surgeon & spinal surgeon Dr. Perri. I finally went and saw the Gastro doctor Who gave me a CT scan. I was told that the skin was pulled to having no muscle mass. I could have another surgery and place mesh to help the muscle. I can't handle another surgery. I'm weight training twice a week Pilates and long distance walking. I'm getting ready to start a spin class. I treat food like medicine very clean eating no drinking I'm on a mission to get back to health physically. Dr. Perri promised me that this was the way to go. Looking back now I realize that this was about money. Yes I'm sure going in through my back would've been very uncomfortable and the scar would not have been nice but at least I would've had my flat stomach and a normal looking belly button. I'm thinking about doing Tight Lase to help tighten and flatten the area. I hope that I can get back to a physique that I am comfortable with. I recently sent an email to Dr.Perri telling him how I felt. He never got back to me. Do I recommend Dr. Perri? He's an excellent surgeon he will fix your back but don't count on any bedside manner after the surgery and don't let him talk you into going through your belly button. I was referred to Dr. Brian Perri by Dr. Dan Jacobson at the Beverly Hills Comprehensive Medical Center. For months I had been in near constant pain in both arms, upper back and both hands and had limited use of my left hand due to severe weakness. After reviews of the MRI and CAT Scans, Dr. Perri recommended cervical spine surgery to fix multiple issues from C3 down through T2. I had the surgery on Apr. 23rd, spent two nights at the recovery center across the hall from the surgery center, and went home pain and numbness free in both arms & hands. I am old enough [early 70's] to have watched the medical profession change drastically. On the one hand, the technology of medicine has advanced in ways which are almost unrecognizable to someone who grew up In the mid 20th century. Diagnostics and treatments now exist which were not even imagined 40 or 50 years ago. On the other hand, the personal connection between doctor and patient has, along the way, been compromised - - actually, almost lost - - as the science overwhelms the human aspect of medicine. What I find remarkable about Dr. Brian Perri, is that he clearly is at the forefront of his specialty (spinal surgery) in terms of technical skills and knowledge. In fact, he is continually helping to advance the science of his specialty. But at the same time, from the moment he first walks into a room, you are aware that he is there as a person - - not just a Doctor. You do not feel like the next patient on an assembly line. You feel like he is genuinely there in the room with you, person-to-person. I believe he has a quietly revolutionary idea, which is all around you, in your experience with him, and the other members of the DOCS team. Medicine should not be just about the process. It should, first and foremost, be about the patient -- the well-being and care of the patient -- from the moment you walk into the waiting room, and through the entire process of surgery and post-surgical healing. I know, II know -- you can find some version of that idea on every website, of every medical group and every hospital. But the actual experience you usually you have as a patient is, in most cases, very different from the words. I had a double spinal fusion [L4/L5/S1] and what they call a "decompression" for stenosis at L4 and L5 on both sides of my spine, done by Dr. Perri. All of it, done through a 2 inch incision just below my navel. It is now about four months since those procedures. At my last check up, Dr. Perri cleared me to return to the gym - - working out has always been an important part of my life. I waited for that moment at the gym when I would be aware something about my back was now (necessarily) compromised - - I mean, come on, my spine has literally been taken apart and put back together.... But that moment never happened. Yes, I am still in the healing process, and aware of it. But it is still my back - - I am still me after a surgery which in some ways still seems just short of magic. And every time I see Dr. PerrI, there is, for me, a genuine personal connection which he makes possible. He actually listens. He invites questions and dialogue. His techniques and capabilities may be new-fangled - - but the humanity he brings to the process is old-fashioned in the best possible way. I wanted to do it - have good insurance - and was wondering if there were other alternatives and had othe questions i wanted answerd. I was under the care of another doctor for three years. I received multiple spine injections & treatments but only got worse. My 91-year-old mom does not have a yelp account, so she asked me to post her review for Dr. Perri: For the past 10 years, I have been a patient of Dr. Brian Perri, during which time he has performed three back surgeries on me. They have all been very successful, but unfortunately my spine is riddled with arthritis and seems to be getting worse with each passing year. Here's were Dr. Perri's talent, expertise and experience come to focus. I first went to his office with terrible lower back pain. After several tests it was decided that I needed decompression surgery and was scheduled three weeks out. Unfortunately, several days after my appointment my pain level went to a 10 and my daughter needed to get me a wheelchair to move around. I was in so much pain I was literally crying. Dr. Perri saw me again and immediately admitted me to Cedars Sinai, where he operated the next day. It was a successful surgery and I recuperated well. My next surgery was about six years ago after caretaking for my husband, which was physically hard on me. Again, the surgery went well and I recuperated quickly. He joked and said that he hoped he would not see me again. However, my back had other ideas. My last surgery was 7 months ago and more complicated as the arthritis has progressed arthritis and my spine continues to degenerate. He fused two levels and inserted hardware to strengthen everything. Again, I recovered well and quickly and am able to walk around the home without a walker and outside the home with a wheeled walker, sometimes walking 1/2 to 1 mile when I feel good. The care that Dr. Perri is gives to his patients comes from within. Whenever I have a question or need to be seen, his office is only a e-mail away and they always respond so quickly and try to work me in somehow if I'm in pain. His office staff is so professional, kind and caring as well and the DOCS hospital where I received my last surgery was like having a private hospital. I had a very painful low back for years but I have been afraid of surgeries because I saw many bad results and worse; I know people who had to go back for second surgery and that scared me to death. I have my life back and Dr. Perri made it happen. For those of you reading this that suffer every minute of your existence with chronic back pain, you know the full power of what I'm saying. The bottom line is this - I now bend at my waist, can put on my sox, make the bed, pick things up off the floor without performing a deep knee bend combined with some deformed form of yoga, mountain bike some of the most treacherous trails in the country and the single most glorious thing of all, play sports with my son. I owe all of this to Dr. Perri. If you are suffering like I did, you know what I just said is all the testimony you need to put your trust into a doctor that made this my new reality and gave me my life back. If you want a little more color and detail, here you go... All the grandiose proclamations of a doctor's skills are great but my measures of true skill are results; especially those achieved under less than ideal conditions. To those not afflicted with the agony of never-ending back pain my measures of skill, and likely yours too, may seem childishly simple but when your everyday movement can bring you to weeping like a baby, the seemingly simplest of measures become the wholly grail of everyday living. My measures are bending at my waist, running, jumping, getting dressed, riding my mountain bike and wrestling with my son - all, to mostly, pain free. Dr. Perri has exceeded my measures of success. As for the details, I'll cut to the chase and spare you the ins and outs of years of torturous physiotherapy, poor diagnosis, pain killers, homeopathic wishful thinking, acupuncture, chiropractic, massage and the multitude of "experimental" back pain remedies. I'm sure you can relate to most, if not all, of this. When I went to Dr. Perri, MRI in hand, he looked at it for 2mins. and spent the next 15mins. explaining my options in very clear terms - L4/L5 disc replacement or fusion. He, for good reason, was not enthusiastic about fusion which I whole heartedly agreed with (did my homework prior to my appointment). He and I chose L4/L5 disc replacement using ProDisc L. Leaping forward to post surgery, it turned out my spine had fused itself, my disc had been pushed almost completely out and my vertebrae had grown "barbs" of bone on the surfaces of L4 and L5. When Dr. Perri saw this during surgery the easy route for him would've been to forego the disc replacement and complete the fusion my spine had already begun by itself. He didn't take the easy way out and I can't thank him enough. Instead, he rose to challenge, improvised, cleaned up the mess in my vertebrae and performed the disc replacement. Today I am 90% pain free - I may be 100% pain free at some point but it's only been 5 months since my surgery and that's the true result as of today. If you are looking for a doctor that will give you the greatest chance at a pain-free life my personal experience tells me that your best bet is Dr. Perri. 5 stars does not give Dr. Perri and his staff, Nalynn and Katherine, enough credit for their care. I saw Dr. Perri 3 years ago for a cervical disc herniation/pinched nerve. Dr. Perri showed me my MRI, explained the problem and assured me that I would recover with physical therapy/traction. My treatment plan was laid out clearly so I felt knowledgeable and confident in my recovery. I had fully regained my strength and was symptom free 3 months later. Unfortunately, I suffered a second neck injury this past March. I hoped ice, NSAIDs and rest would do the trick. My pain was so severe I was unable to sleep or function for weeks. Symptoms began progressing very quickly. I lost sensation in my fingers and felt I was losing control of my arm doing basic activities like brushing my teeth. Dr. Perri fit me in his schedule immediately after I called the office. He once again reviewed my MRI with me. I had a large disc extrusion blocking both the right and left nerve root exits, along with congenital stenosis. I am a 27-year old nurse with a very physical job so this news was terrifying; however, Dr. Perri explained my options and I decided to have an artificial disc replacement. Dr. Perri even wanted to meet with my parents to answer their questions prior to surgery. My parents were more terrified than I was but left my pre-op appointment with absolute trust in him. I woke up from surgery and was beyond ecstatic I could feel my fingers again!! Besides the expected post-op surgical pain and muscle spasms, I have not had any nerve pain since :) Nalynn and Katherine made this whole process 100x easier for me. I've always suffered from various back pain throughout my life since I turned 32. Mostly low back pain that would flare up when I traveled or when I was stressed. My back would "go out" a couple times a year but it always came back and was pain free after a couple weeks. When I was 35 (about 15 months ago) it all changed. I started to get lower back pain that radiated to my hips, my tailbone, my butt. It would pulse and it was sharp and constant and interfered with sleep (every time I turned at night, I would wake up in shocking pain). I would dread the morning because initially standing up would cause so much low back pain that I would cry out audibly. I went to my GP and he took X-rays and told me there was some narrowing of the disc in my L5/S1, but then just sent me to physical therapy. I did physical therapy for 4 months. Sometimes, it seemed to make the pain worse. I went to a rheumatologist to get tested for arthritis and it came back that my immune system for the most part was fine. They sent me to an orthopedic specialist who gave me epidural steroid shots (terrifying huge shots) in my lower back. They told me it was possible these shots could take down the inflammation and could potentially solve the problem. It did, for 24 hours, and then the pain was back. They told me I should see a surgeon. I went to a chiropractor who did some work but it didn't help. I did yoga for a few months and it seemed to make the pain in the morning worse. I went back to the orthopedic guy and he ordered some MRI's. By this point, I legitimately had to also switch insurance from an HMO to a PPO because my HMO wouldn't allow for any of this even though I was in constant pain. The MRI's came back that I had significant degenerative disc degeneration, disc desiccation, minor Schmorl's node formation, and reactive plate endorses (and a whole bunch of other medical terms I barely understand). The crux of the matter is my L5/S1 disc (which connects your spine to your sacrum) was basically disintegrated and almost rubbing bone on bone. I'm not a person that runs to surgery (I've literally never had a surgery before) and I went and saw two different surgeons before Dr. Perri. Both those surgeons before him basically told me I needed fusion... I did my research on fusion and the consensus was "if you need it, you need it" but everyone complains that fusion still can cause pain and complications down the road with the discs above or below taking the brunt of the work after one disc has been fused. Then a friend suggested DR PERRI... Dr Perri is basically the world specialist on "artificial disc replacement" (a fairly new surgery that's been around for a decade or so). He told me we could save my back from future surgeries by doing a disc replacement. I was incredibly relieved. And then I had to fight with my insurance for two months to get it approved (it's very expensive and they consider it to be experimental). Both Nalynn and Katherine in Dr Perri's office would get on the phone (waiting for hours on hold) and on email with various insurance reps with me, and Dr Perri had to call them personally a few times, to argue the necessity of this procedure. I cried, a lot, both out of constant pain and out of frustration. And they kept working with me to get this done. Not only did they answer like a hundred (maybe more!) emails from me about the procedure itself but also dealt with hundreds (maybe more!) of emails and calls with the insurance company. Guess what?!? We finally got it approved. I got surgery (a total disc replacement on my L5/S1) on 2/15. It was an amazingly quick procedure and I was back home in bed on vicadin the same night. The first 3 days were a lot of drugs and a lot of sleep. After that, I did the requisite walking Dr Perri asked me to (legit pacing in my house for a mile a day since my husband was terrified of me tripping outside), made sure to take care of my incision (about 3 inches long on my lower abdomen... I know... it's terrifying and awesome they go in THROUGH THE FRONT). It's been 13 days since surgery and my lower back doesn't hurt when I sleep.... it doesn't hurt when I get up in the morning... it doesn't hurt in my hips. Don't get me wrong, my back is not pain free. I have other issues from old injuries and I need to go to physical therapy and make sure my core is strong so I don't have other back issues. But this is legitimately a miracle. And I couldn't be happier I did it. The insurance is only paying a portion of the cost of the surgery so it is costing quite a bit out of pocket for the whole thing. But I'm 37 years old and I need to take care of my health now so it doesn't suck as I get older. Dr Perri told me if we had waited another 4 months, fusion would have been the only option... and once you fuse one level, the other levels may need fusion later. I'm so glad I was able to get this disc replacement and for the loving care his staff and Dr Perri showed me over this entire ordeal. read more

Unfortunately we did not have a good experience with Dr Perry. Dr. Perry did a neck surgery on my husband, and a screw came out so it had to be redone. That was not the problem. My husband ended up with a feeding tube. Something was nicked during the procedure. Dr Perri said in his 250 procedures this had never happened. As my friend said his case 251 was the problem. When Dr Perry came by the hospital he gave jerry some apple sauce and said see he can swallow. In the mean time the swallow tests were showing that my husband had silent aspiration which means the food was getting into his lungs even though he didn't feel it. My husband was on a feeding tube for 6 months until Dr. Berk at UCLA was able to help him. Now 6 years later my husband is back on a feeding tube due to the same injury coming back. This created a huge gap in our lifestyle and was and had been horrible. read more

I trusted Dr. Perri with my life twice. First time, I was in pain, losing strength, miserable. Dr. Perri repaired my neck, took me out of pain...a hundred percent successful operation. The second time, I was in terrible pain and trusted Dr. Perri, who installed two eleven inch metal rods and sixteen screws, defused my vertebrae, stablilized my spine and took me out of pain. Each time I saw Dr. Perri, he was totally present, totally focused on my needs and extraordinarily clear and precise when describing what he suggested, what he did and how best to heal. That would be a high enough of a recommendation, but, in addition, his staff, top to bottom, were efficient, patient and extremely helpful. If I had a question, it was answered. This is my second time having a successful surgery with Dr. Perri. I had a L5 Disk replacement May 2016 and it was life changing. Everything went perfect and I'm pain free today thanks to Dr. Perri and his incredible staff. Two weeks ago I had a c6 c7 neck disk replacement and it's been so much easier than I had anticipated and I know that's all to Dr. Perri's credit. I'm pain free already and can tun my neck more than I have in 10 years. I can't say enough great things about DOCS and the staff there as well. Let me start by saying that for 50 years (fortunately) I'd never had to undergo any kind of surgery. So needless to say it was a bit intimidating to learn that I was suffering from spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal cord) as well as herniated discs in my neck, which would require a discectomy and fusion. Thank God I was in the very capable hands of Dr. Brian Perri. He did an excellent job of explaining my condition and the options at hand. His calm, authoritative manner was extremely reassuring and his entire staff made office visits and the procedure a breeze. Dr. Perri!! If you've read any of my posts re doctors, the common thread is my fear of needles and pretty much pain, in general. For the last 2 years I've been doing EVERYTHING and ANYTHING to avoid the multiple surgeries that were ahead of me, from getting run over by an SUV, (while on foot). A few months ago, I dragged myself into Dr. Perri's office, ready to submit to the inevitable. From the second he opened the door, wearing what could have been a bespoke suit, gorgeous Italian shoes, (I'm a designer/stylist), a beautiful friendly smile, a friendly casual demeanor and my favorite scent...CONFIDENCE. We talked for a bit, reviewed my old MRI's, did some kooky physical exercises which confirmed his findings...I needed a Cervical, "Hybrid", surgery - (replace a disc and a fusion at a different level). Yikes! Actually, no yikes, at all! Aside from neck pain and very little range of motion, I was losing the ability to use my arms, hands and fingers. Surgery had to happen soon but he wouldn't touch me without new scans, a bone density and blood test and 6 weeks of pt because my neck wasn't strong enough or in a good enough place where I could get the best result. 1 month ago, I did it and it was incredible! I went to sleep, woke up a few hours later and could move my head, raise my arms over my head and bend my fingers and open and close my hands! AND didn't even and haven't had to take a pain pill. Yeah...HE IS THAT GOOD!! I knew he would be. Dr. Perri saved my life - sounds hyperbolic but it's not. There aren't enough words to describe the gratitude I have for this awesome man and brilliant surgeon. If you're in need of "Greatness" Run!
