In 2017 I had a slight MCL tear on my left knee, the previous doctor I was seeing suggested doing a knee surgery to repair it. Was referred to Dr Fields by my Chiropractor of many many years, after 3 or 4 years of traditional medical treatment for problems in lower back which resulted in 3 surgeries from bulging, degenerated, and collapsed discs that were impinging on nerves. When my right knee began troubling me in 2021 I saw an orthopedic doctor who immediately said "knee replacement." Well, I wasn't going to do anything that drastic right away, so I began to look at more non-invasive remedies. Steroids and hyloronic acid injections did not help so I thought that stem cells might be the answer. A friend gave me Dr. Field's contact information and I made an appointment for a consultation. Dr. Fields was very pleasant and chatty. He took plenty of time with me and after our conversation he announced, "You're going to get stem cells!" I was thrilled. I have worked with Prolotherapy and PRP doctors all over the world, and Dr. Fields is the best I have encountered. When I tore both shoulder tendons during a business trip to the Sinai desert, I was told by a surgeon in Spain that I would need surgery and that recovery would take two years. This took place between two extensive tours of Europe and the timing was not good. Fortunately, I found a physical therapist in Spain who managed to patch me up enough to complete my tours although I was still in a lot of pain. Upon returning to the US, I found a Prolotherapy doc in San Francisco who I worked with a few times. Her treatments were physically brutal unlike Dr Fields who is precise and gentle with his injections. I was then referred to Dr. Fields by an associate and from my first session with him, my recovery greatly accelerated. I was no longer in pain, and I had full range of motion, which allowed me to go back to the gym. I could also play the piano again without pain. I can honestly say that Dr Fields saved my career as without full range of pain-free motion I could not have continued to perform or teach. I couldn't give Dr. Fields a higher rating or I would. First, his office is convenient and near the 10 freeway with easy-to-find parking all around. I was bound to have an age-related injury at some point; I have been an athlete for forty years. Dr. Field's was someone I heard of for many years so when my chiropractor, Dr. Vessey in Arcadia said we had reached a point where I needed more - the soreness in my tailbone and the numbness that occasionally occurred in my leg could not be healed with manipulation alone. Dr. Vessey told me to see Dr. Fields because he had received prolotherapy and stem cell treatments with exceptional results. (He was a college football player and everyone knows what happens to their backs later in life. Dr. Vessey said that he was going to have to quit working because of his back pain. He thought his life was over.) Dr. Fields looked at my xray and MRI and said that I was a good candidate for treatment. So I scheduled my first prolotherapy treatment. I was in and out of his office in an hour and a half. I followed his instructions on how to care for my back and in about a week, there was a noticeable difference. I am presently pain-free in November of 2020 after my 35th LA Marathon at 72 years old. After #35 I could hardly get down my second story steps. The pain in my right knee was a 10+ and my knee and foot were very swelled. I spent several weeks elevating and icing, the swelling and pain started to decrease. I had an X-ray and an MRI. Neither showed serious damage, that was not relative to the level of pain I was experiencing. I had researched PRP and Prolo Therapy in the past and understood the process. As the weeks and months went by my knee began to feel better. Not no pain, but better. I talked with several other PRP/Prolo Therapy Doctors. I selected Dr. Fields because as an accomplished Ironman athlete himself, I felt he would understand my desire, even at 72, to continue my LA Marathon Legacy status. Honestly, I was not sure the pain would go away. Funny, I was, for the first time ready to commit to my Road Bike! I was ready to say "No More" LA Marathons! I saw Dr. Field's regarding PRP shots in my hip that is causing pain. To be honest, he's one of the absolute worst doctors I've ever met. First of all, you wait over an hour (even though there is hardly anyone there!) Then if you dare ask any questions, you are brushed off, or he gets defensive. I asked what the efficacy rate is and he got defensive. I asked him if he uses an ultrasound to guide the needles (most do) and he defensively replied "if they use that they don't know anatomy." Actually standard of care states that some guidance should be used lest you nick a nerve or something more serious and cause more of a problem than you started with. He would not meet my eyes and likes to repeat over and over his little sales pitches like "the clock only goes one direction so your condition will only get worse" or "cortisone will damage you" over and over to scare you. I've never had a worse gut feeling in a medical office in my life. He won't discuss specifics, doesn't know how to read an MRI (which is why they freak out if you only bring a disc and not the written report), and has no desire to really discuss the treatments. He's too busy selling them. Oh and you pay UP FRONT before you ever get there! What doctor does that? I've never even heard of that. And if you cancel? He charges a "restocking" fee!!! What is he, Target? What exactly is he "restocking"?? I am very open to PRP and will most likely try it, but with someone else. The treatments he offers aren't the problem - it's him. read more

I was having problems with my knees and was starting to seriously consider knee replacement surgery. I'm a firm believer in holistic medicine and felt that I should explore stem cells first to see if they could improve my knees. Dr. Fields gave me the price of $16,000 to do stem cell treatments on both knees. I cashed-out a long-held investment and did the treatment with Dr. Fields. I paid the $16,000, did the treatments and waited for the results. I waited the required amount of time and returned for all post-treatment check-ups. As a Dentist of 25 years, the use of my arms and hands are absolutely vital to my profession. I also need to be in peak shape as a Brown Belt in Jiu Jitsu, father of two very athletic teenage girls, with a wife that plays League tennis, as an avid mountain biker, and having trained with the Navy SEALs. I consulted with a surgeon who informed me that I had a fracture and put me in a cast for 5 weeks. After 5 weeks, the fracture healed, but I still had extreme pain in my wrist. I was scheduled for an MRI where I was told that not only had I fractured my wrist, but I had also partially torn ligaments. The surgeon who reviewed my MRI informed me that I needed surgery to repair the ligaments, and that it was my only option. I left the surgeon's office in tears, not wanting surgery as I knew this would impact my active lifestyle, and I sought other options. I remembered that I had previously attended an A4M Conference, where Dr. Fields lectured on the topic "Repairing Joints and Spine without Surgery: Prolotherapy/PRP/Stem Cells". I searched for the lecture and listened to it again and began doing my research about alternative treatments to heal my wrist. I realized that if I wanted to continue living the active lifestyle that I do, I needed to heal my wrist and not have any surgical procedures, so I contacted Dr. Fields' office in Santa Monica. I was immediately drawn to Dr. Fields, aka The Athletic Doc, because he also lives an active healthy lifestyle - he had participated in multiple Ironman's and multiple triathlons - and would understand my desire to continue my very active lifestyle. I contacted Dr. Fields' office and spoke with Ally, who set me up with an appointment. My first appointment was scheduled a week later so I could make arrangements to travel to Santa Monica for my treatment. I was excited and nervous to get treatment, but I knew I would be in great hands with Dr. Fields. During our appointment, I immediately sensed the passion Dr. Fields has for helping his patients since he was extremely attentive, knowledgeable, and engaged. Dr. Fields informed me that repairing torn ligaments is a slow process that takes time with possibly multiple treatments and is not guaranteed, but I was optimistic and eager to try a non-surgical route to heal my wrist and had faith that it would work. Well, it did. After each treatment, I began noticing the pain decreasing and my wrist function increasing. My last treatment was October 2016 but the healing benefits didn't stop then; my wrist improved over the next year, and my wrist is now back to normal if not even stronger than it was before my injury. I have no more pain, no weakness, and no restrictions in using my wrist. I cannot thank Dr. Fields and his staff enough for helping me keep my very active lifestyle and heal my wrist with the PRP Treatment I received. Prior to visiting Dr. Field's office, I had an MRI which showed a clear rotator cuff tear, but rather than go straight to an ortho and surgery, I decided to research PRP. Dr. Fields comes up quickly in a Google search, so I decided to give him/his office a call. I live in Newport, so driving to Santa Monica is a pain, anytime of day. Nothing was unusual about the consultation, except that I agree with the previous Yelp review - $300 for very little time - ESPECIALLY when they don't include it in the PRP if you decide to go with the therapy, is pretty steep. Dr. Fields comes across a bit like a salesperson..........But since he is an athlete himself, I decided to give PRP (his recommedation) a try. Here is the WEIRD thing. When I showed up for my PRP, an office person took my blood......Then, after the blood spinning, the office Manager injected me with the "improved" blood.....But no Dr. Fields....no where to be found. Never saw Dr. Fields during the procedure - which begs the question - What is the difference who or what Dr. you see to do PRP if they don't perform the procedure, oversee the procedure, or FOLLOW UP with the procedure? And then, after being told that I would be called the next day to see how I was feeling - I never heard from Dr. Fields office until 4-5 weeks later when it was time to schedule the next $875 appointment...........No thanks. And yet, my arm was KILLING me for 10 days after the procedure, but I REFUSED to call THEM...... No reason to go out of your hometown to get prolotherapy or PRP done - and it doesn't matter how many Ironmans or Triathalons the Dr. has run. It is the same procedure......so make sure the price is right and the patient care/follow up is good. read more

Dr. Fields and his staff have given me my life back. I had been in terrible pain with tendonitis in my elbow and was considering going out on disability. I had to give up doing any of my physical activities. Weeks of physical therapy and rest did nothing to alleviate my pain. I'm so happy I researched and discovered prolotherapy and Dr. Fields' office. It's been a year now and I am still pain free..playing pickelball, kayaking, bowling! All the things that I had given up. *******Update******** Dr Fields did call me after learning of my extreme dissatisfaction to try and clear things over so I gave him one additional star. I wouldn't say the problems I had went away as a result, but I do appreciate the time he took to communicate with me. He seemed genuinely surprised at my dissatisfaction and kept referring to my file where I stated on paper that I was getting better (to his credit) However, as I tried to explain that's because I did FEEL better when I had the treatments but it wasn't working long term all of my pain kept coming back and I didn't feel he was providing effective communication when we would talk in person about my lack of completely recovery. Tho we concluded on better terms, I don't feel still that we saw eye to eye on the situation. I have looked over my review and am trying to present the facts of my interactions with him and the office because my intent is not to slam him personally, but to advise others of what they are getting into. As a result, I feel that my review is still applicable and if the situation is made right or a more positive reputation is built with my husband and I, then I will again update or remove my review. Until then, here are the fact as previously reviewed******** My husband and I have been extremely frustrated with this office. Let me be clear, prolotherapy itself DOES work, but if you can go somewhere else, please avoid Dr Fields office. I however, did not have any other options. #1 In the 7+ months that I have worked with the office not a single employee has stayed working there. In fact, of the 4-5 positions (outside of the dr.) each position has had an average of 4-5 people in it (as that's just the ones I personally encountered going every four to five weeks or so). The Dr must not be easy to get along with. Now at first, this may not be a concern, except it is extremely difficult to get anything done with so much turnover. I have to call an average of 7 times to get my receipts emailed to me for ins billing purposes (or other questions I need answered etc). I can't generally get the paperwork when I'm there because there is always someone new who doesn't know how to do it. I generally get voicemail when I call and I have yet to have anyone return a call once I leave a voicemail. I live several hours from the office so I can't just walk in. #2 I am often left wondering if he has an issue with women. He's wonderfully polite to my husband, and generally nicer to me if my husband is there, but if I go myself, Dr. Fields appears to be pushy and a lot less concerned as I try to explain the results of the treatment. On one occasion I tried to shake his hand after the apt. He ignored my hand but then shook my husband's. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I stuck my hand out again and he jammed the clipboard in my hand. When I asked what it was for he told me (sorta like an order) to "take it up front" desk as if I was his employee. #3 My husband and I became more and more frustrated as time went on because we couldn't get Dr Fields to give us a general "game plan". Initially he said that the average person needs 4-6 sessions but on the extremely high end 12, but we should see it working before we got that high. However, after 7 treatments, when I had about two months of great results, I wound up back as square one with a lot of pain and "slipping out" we went in for a total of 9 treatments before quitting because he kept increasing the treatments I might need and said you just need to keep coming back every so often. $500 a session is a lot of money for not very long term results. We asked him for markers or things to show us that we were on the right path/ or improving but he just kept saying come back for another treatment which is when we really got angry because we strongly began to feel he just wanted our money and wasn't really concerned about me actually getting better. He never re evaluated me when the treatment results stopped working after only two months of success (it took 4 months of treatment every three weeks to get to that point). He just said I had to come back for more. When I asked him about the fact that he originally said we should know at this point and 12 was the max he changed that and said I just needed to keep coming back. We've finally given up on him because we didn't feel that he actually cared about me being better, just our money. #4 He's considerably more expensive than other prolotherapists that I have now worked with, but I wouldn't base your decision to go on this. Some guys aren't as knowledgeable or as good at the injections, Dr. Fields does seem to know what he's doing. read more

Dr. Fields has been treating me for over 2 years. I have traumatic arthritis in my left hip, and have had two series of prolotherapy and PRP 4 times...it has helped miraculously and upon doing so, decided to go ahead and do the right hip as well!! My quality of life would not be what it is today, had I not found him!!! I had an accident with a massage and decided to get prolo in my left shoulder...there again...great success....I just recently go trigger finger in my thumb, and I am going for my 3rd prolo shot...and this should be the final shot...no steroid and everything is up to par...I thank God for Dr. Fields...he has helped me in ways that I never could repay!! All I can say is pure quackery. This guy only wants to sell his overpriced prolotherapy and take your money. To make matters worse he bad mouths other physicians to make himself seem more competent. Oh, and some important information he is not a sports physician! He's a chiropractor and a general medicine Doctor. He claims to be a sports physician which is totally misleading because you actually have to specialize in a sports medicine fellowship for that. This review is long overdue. I joined a running group and started running. After my 2nd half marathon, I must have over done it and my left knee hurt like crazy after Surf City half. I was in pain, could barely walk to my car, and days later, it hurt going downstairs, like it was rubbing or grinding. After my crazy posts on Facebook, a client of Dr. Fields recommended that I see Dr. Fields. (The client had two bad ankles and after 8 or so treatments, is all better, playing sports, etc). I got a prolotherapy treatment on my first visit and consultation. In total, I had 4 prolotherapy treatments, coming back every 3 weeks, but it was improving, but not as much as I hoped, so we did then tried PRP. I did PRP twice, coming in 6 weeks in between appointments. The rates are posted online so it's not a secret so I'm not sure why people are surprised about the costs. Dr. Fields is an athlete and has done a few triathlons so when I told him I needed to run the LA Marathon, he understood that I needed to get better ASAP. Does he like to talk? Yes. Are his staff friendly? Yes. I've never waited more than ten minutes in the lobby, maybe because I go early in the mornings? There are video testimonials as you wait which are inspiring and gives you hope. I didn't get an MRI. I did take the supplements faithfully bc if I was gonna spend this much on treatments, I wanted to do what he suggested. (My friend didn't take the supplements). I was supposed to come in to do the video testimony, but I have been too busy to make an appointment. I was 90% good when I stopped the treatments. My last treatment was June 17. My first treatment was in Feb. Since Jun, I've done two more half marathons and resumed my running with the running group. I also work out bootcamp twice a week. My knee is fine and doing great, pain free. So, though it was an expensive treatment, it sure beats surgery. I would recommend Dr. Fields if you have knee issues. Thank you Dr. Fields for your help. Your staff was great, especially Manny (I think that's his name). An update as of 12/18/15: I've done 8 full marathons so far and a bunch of half marathons and maintaining my running! read more
