Awhile back I was stopped in my tracks with stiffness in a knee that limited my ability to hike and workout. In my search for an orthopedist I was lucky to find Dr. Powell who injected the knee with hyaluronic acid. The stiffness and discomfort completely vanished allowing me to do normal activities again without risk of injury. My understanding was that it would last 6 months. It lasted 5 years at which point I had another round! Dr. Powell practices some distance from me but I wouldn't go to anyone else. He has had extensive experience working with professional sports teams as well as ordinary individuals like me who want to feel their best. He is skillful, personable, and attentive. I can't say enough good about Dr. Powell and his staff. I've been treated by him for more than 10 years for issues with one knee and then the other. It is easy to make an appointment and I rarely wait more than ten minutes when I arrive. I've had two surgeries and both times Dr. Powell's care and skill have been exceptional. His assistant is in constant contact with me by phone and email and responds to whatever I need. I rarely write reviews, but wanted to share my experience with Dr. Powell. I was dealing with a nagging knee injury that just wasn't getting better. After the first appointment, I felt like I was in really good hands. He took time to walk me through what was going on with my knee, explained the options clearly, and didn't rush the process. I never felt pressured into a certain treatment. He ended up recommending a less invasive approach and I appreciated that he wasn't immediately pushing surgery unless it was really necessary. Throughout the process, I felt like he actually listened. He asked about my lifestyle and my goals and tailored everything around getting me back to the activities I enjoy. I ended up getting a procedure and some follow-up treatment (including PRP therapy, which was new to me) and I'm honestly shocked by how good my knee feels now. Dr Powell is not only highly intelligent,extremely well skilled but also personable. I like him as a Doctor and as a person. First, as a little secret, I contemplated not writing this review because Dr. Powell probably won't see it. And even if he does, I'm pretty confident he wouldn't give a damn. My journey with Dr. Scott Powell began after a shoulder injury while playing hockey last summer. I was referred to his office, where time waits for no one. Dr. Powell's visits were like a race against the clock, & I half-expected a Batman-like smoke bomb on his exit. Following a painful ruptured appendix ordeal, his surgery on my shoulder was a memorable rollercoaster. I played the family hero on July 4th, catching my stumbling 84-year-old father with my left arm, Instantly I knew I was screwed. Now, I can't pick up groceries or reverse my car without banshee-like screams. Who needs those, anyway? I needed the surgery before my fall job, & now I'll be working with a cast, feeling like a billy goat with a stomach ache. Plus, I still can't sleep on my left side, But hey, my wife enjoys her personal space! I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Powell and took a day off work, only to find they ninja-moved to Santa Monica without a word. No apology, just the sound of silence. When I got those 37 seconds with Dr. Powell, I poured my heart out about the pain, and he prescribed an MRI, which my insurance denied. They insisted on an X-ray and physical therapy. Apparently, my labrum tear wasn't VIP enough for the MRI club. Dr. Powell also tossed in some pain meds, but my pharmacist warned of internal bleeding. After my August visit, I left around 15 messages that disappeared into voicemail black holes. We reached Dr. Powell's office on September 28th, promising a peer-to-peer and quick MRI approval - which was a joke. Then came the pièce de résistance: a bill dated October 2nd, sporting big red letters saying past due that seemed to mock me. On October 18th, I left a message stating that I had no intention of paying that bill. And what do you know? They called me back today, finally realizing they had a phone.I regaled them with tales of unanswered calls, my pain, and the escalating absurdity. My phone records turned me into a detective. A friend, an orthopedic surgeon from D.C., confirmed the situation's gravity. I wish I'd stood up against the bill from the beginning. Their indifference pushed me to find a new doctor, hoping it was not too late for my shoulder. And if you doubt any of this, try calling Dr. Powell's office. They're playing hide-&-seek with your messages. They offered to waive $250 out of the $1,484.73 I paid, But a little empathy and how we can fix this would be nicer. Did I mention he sees you for 37 seconds? After my phone call, I'm convinced they all celebrated like in The Wizard of Oz, with a triumphant chorus of "Ding Dong, Darren's shoulder still hurts, and we couldn't care less." It's a classic case of "heartless hospital administration" instead of "heartfelt friends of Dorothy. Oh, and to clarify, I'm not upset with his work on my shoulder. The guy did a fantastic job, and let's not forget, Dr. Powell's office could double as a celebrity hangout, with photos of him and the rich and famous plastered everywhere. Who needs wallpaper when you can have celebrity headshots, right? Don't get me wrong; the insurance company isn't a beacon of hope--credit where it's due. The insurance company did pick up the phone, and we made numerous calls to Dr. Powell's office. The insurance company didn't hesitate to point fingers at Dr. Powell every time, insisting they received their first response on Oct 13th. It's bad enough that I'll have to pay the clinic all over again, and if surgery's required, I'll fork out for the anesthesiologist, too--a double whammy. Oh, and by the way, I'm expecting my first child in February, And with my post-surgery experience, I can confidently say that I won't be able to pick up my little bundle of joy right away. How do I know, you ask? After that first surgery, I was confined to an arm sling. You might think an arm sling is a comfy sleep accessory, but it was more like a nightly rendezvous with an enthusiastic branding iron, courtesy of my wife. I'd wake up feeling like she was claiming me with a mercury-hot branding iron, scarring me for life with her initials. And believe me, I've lost count of how often strangers would come up to me, curious about what had happened. Like clockwork, they all shared the same sentiment: "Worst pain ever." Of course, I get it; giving birth is often touted as the worst pain, but hey, women are undoubtedly a lot stronger than us mere mortals. So, hats off to Dr. Powell, who'll likely have a chuckle at this. He's the master of the 30-second check-up, takes a moment to admire his portrait on the wall, and then, like my cats, seems to wonder, "What was his name again?" P.S. If you, too, need help contacting them, tell them you're not paying your bill, and they'll call you back faster than a Dr. Powell office visit. He's just trying to run through as many people as he can and am confident has no idea what empathy or sympathy mean. Treats people as though their drink is up on the counter at Starbucks. I had never had any health issues, so for someone to walk in through a door and say "You need surgery. Here's a packet. See the front desk to schedule your surgery." then walk out - is just insanity to me. I didn't understand half the words he said, was in shock, and had many questions. Dr. Powell and his staff really stuck with me and pressed the insurance company , moved up the surgery schedule and got my knee surgery through in the knick of time. After being traumatized by trying to work with a couple of orthopedic doctors recommended by my attorney, I decided it was time to come in to see Dr. Powell. He also performed surgery on my then-boyfriend a few years ago, and was highly recommended. Calling in the office to set up the appointment was efficient and I got any questions I had answered. I spoke with Chris, the office assistant at this office location and he couldn't have been more helpful. The office emailed me the patient forms to fill out online prior to the office visit. I only had a handle of forms to sign and date when I showed up. I waited no longer than 10mins before I was shown in. Chris asked me some questions and after I changed, I got to see Dr. Powell within 5mins. Dr. Powell was the epitome of professinalism and caring as well with great bedside manners. Very patient, he answered my questions to the point -- no beating around the bush or coming up with "extra" surgeries that I may need like I've heard from prior doctors. It is important for me to feel like I can trust the doctor who treat me and perform my surgery, and I felt that from the get-go with Dr. Powell. The front desk is also super nice and professional in handling questions. The only minus I could think of is the parking situation but then that is the norm around Santa Monica. Parking in the attached structure can get pretty pricey. Grab a 1-hour street spot if you get lucky. read more

I've had two knee surgeries with Dr Powell - both times to reconstruct my ACL. For the first surgery in 2014, he showed up late and left me anxiously waiting for my surgery at the hospital. He also scheduled a trip to Europe leaving later that day, so he wasn't able to perform any of the post-surgery check ups. Luckily his partner was great and did a house visit a few days later. Since my knee healed up nicely, when my other ACL tore two years later, I decided to go back to Dr Powell. Now with more experience working with his office, I took every precaution to make sure my surgery would be 100% in-network and covered by my insurance. Dr Powell's office still wound up scheduling an out-of-network anesthesiologist that day, who wound up charging me close to $7000. When I called to fight this charge, Dr Powell claimed I was harassing him and discharged me from his care, and then sent debt collectors on me. There is no one like Dr Scott Powell and his skilled surgery and consultations. He gave me an new ACL made from my own two small tendons from my thigh, no cadaver, no rotten frozen dead body part like the ones previous doctors insisted was great and safe at a time when UCLA was caught using and selling frozen cadaver parts from the medical school and I resisted until I found Dr. Powell and felt safe in his care. Once I found out he went to China with the Olympic team...sold. That takes courage and confidence and he commits his life to the wellness of his patients and passions. I'm returning for another procedure grateful that he is still practicing and living his beliefs and remarkable skills he uses with all of his patients. Almost seven years after Dr. Powell's botched surgery of my torn left ankle ligament (which has never healed properly), I'm finally writing this review (because I'm still seething about his ineptness as a doctor). Beware of this guy. He doesn't care about you. He cares only about his ego (see all the pictures on his wall with young sports team groupies and his focus on his past muscial career with ShaNaNa). He should have stayed in music as a B-rated musician, since he doesn't care about his patients. All he cares about is the money, stroking his ego, and how many people he can get into surgery. I had an appointment with him after my surgery (which was at 7:30 a.m.) and he didn't see me until nearly 9:30 a.m.? Why, well he told me he was attending to other emergencies with patients. But that was a lie. How do I know this? Well the office walls were very thin and in the next office he spent 45 minutes trying to convince a woman to have her surgery done with him (while keeping me waiting). When I had my surgery he insisted it be at an Encino surgery center (which was out of my way and I later found out he directs patients there since he partly owns it). The results of the surgery were awful. My left ankle and leg was swollen beyond belief and the original torn ligament in the ankle was WORSE after the surgery. So, for a full year I went to him and followed his advice (e.g. wear compresion socks, etc.) which didn't work. I went to other medical doctors who inferred it was a botched surgery and that there was such massive scar tissue that the only thing they could do is try to clean the scar tissue out (and they were not sure it would work). So after 7 years of PT, wearing a support sleeve for my ankle, etc. it finally is getting better (no thanks to Dr. Powell). He is an arrogant jerk. At one point after waiting nearly an hour to see him, his assistant said I should tell him about the long waits since they made patients angry. So, in the nicest way possibe I told him. I should have known better, he was not respectful but angry and attacked me verbally for even bringing this up and told me he was a prominent medical professional (ha! ha!) . Even though his staff encouraged me to mention it to him because they are afraid of him, he didn't listen. He has a god-complex. Avoid this excuse for a doctor at all costs. read more

Dr. Powell I a great surgeon and a very compassionate doctor. He has performed both of my knee surgeries and both went very well from a mechanical standpoint. I suffer from a chronic pain condition that makes recovery from surgery really challenging. The last knee surgery was especially hard, but Dr. Powell constantly checked on me and did everything he could to help treat the pain. Even when it was time for me to try a pain specialist, he continued to check on me often. This kind of care and compassion from doctors is really rare and I'm so grateful to have found Dr. Powell. read more

So surprised to read so many negative reviews! Dr Powell has been nothing if not extremely professional and thorough and courtly in my experience. I initially saw him with a hip completely destroyed by arthritis and in excruciating pain. After referring me on to Dr Oaks at Keck, a hip wizard, I was walking my dogs 10 days after surgery and am completely like new. More recently I had a second visit after an injury and he was extensive in his diagnosis. Personally, I couldn't recommend him more highly. If you have to wait, there are stacks of fascinating books to look at and cool photographs and Rick and roll memorabilia on the walls. read more

My experience with Doc. Powell was a disaster. Let's start. I was required to fill out a form prior to my visit and I did so thoroughly. I explained what kind of pain I was experiencing and where, and what I thought could have caused it. Once at the office, I explained again to both him and his assistant, twice, how I thought I could have injured myself and exactly where the pain was coming from, which was at the top of the knee. Not even the joint itself, but the very top of it, "before" the joint. I went into details and I didn't leave anything out. Doc. Powell, after a 2 minute assessment, said my meniscus was torn. It sounded odd to me, as the meniscus wasn't even near the location my pain originated from, and I made a comment about it. He got defensive and said that "I came to him for his professional opinion and that was it". He suggested to discard physical therapy completely, get an MRI done asap and maybe opt for surgery right away. I was very confused to say the least. Long story short, I went to a different specialist, who diagnosed my pain as tendonitis. After 2 weeks of rest and light rehab I am 99% back to normal. Had my first squat session yesterday and my pain is gone. Doc. Powell completely misdiagnosed the source of the pain and was almost willing to jump to surgery right away, completely discarding rehab. Thankfully I did not listened to him and dodged costly procedure and a big waste of time. read more

My wife had been treated there earlier in the year for a broken bone in her foot and, as a healthcare professional, she is a tough critic and she recommended them wholeheartedly. Dr. Powell is the absolute best when it comes to orthopedists. I injured myself playing soccer and it unfortunately required surgery to repair the damage. I of course was super nervous as I am very athletic and play multiple sports so I wanted to make sure I would be able to return to all the things I enjoy doing. He assured me I would be able to get back on the field. I was given a recovery time of 6 to 8 months to get back and sure enough I am back. I couldn't be happier! I've come twice to this office both times the doctor couldn't see me. He was over booked or too busy to take care of the clients in his waiting room. Walked right out the door as I sat in the waiting area after I even made an effort to come in early for him when his receptionist called my office to move my appointment up. I have an amazing insurance from NBC Comcast and he was referred by the patient concierge. I will be making sure they no longer refer him to anyone again. Complete waste of my time. I recently had my first (and last) visit at Dr. Powell's office and was unfortunately, very displeased with my end result. I have dealt with an extreme case of arthritis (adhesive capsulitis) in my shoulder for the past two years. After an unsuccessful surgery, I have been receiving cortisone shots to alleviate the pain. I decided to see a new and more conveniently local doctor, which was Dr. Powell. This particular cortisone injection provided by Dr. Powell left me with more pain than I had when I walked in. As Dr. Powell was about to inject the cortisone, I requested the shot to be injected through the back, rather than the front of my shoulder. Having previously had these shots to alleviate the pain, I knew that going through the front would only cause more discomfort. Dr. Powell insisted that he go through the front. I decided to trust a doctor's expertise, rather than my own. Over the period of a few days, the pain highly worsened by creeping up my neck. Now, I have a newly developed level of discomfort layered on top of the old pain. I called Dr. Powell, requesting yet again to receive an injection through the back and that other ways have not worked for me in the past. To my surprise, he responded quite rudely, saying that I can see another doctor because he refuses. Ultimately, I feel very neglected and most importantly, as if Dr. Powell did not truly care about my well-being and healing. read more

Okay, many will wonder why am I writing a Negative review, on a Doctor seemingly with an excellent record, remember each individual has his or her own story to tell. Keep in mind his specialty (Sports Medicine) and this is where he makes his money. If he feels he has done all he can, and no more visits or surgery's are needed, he'll refer you or let you go as a patient, and here is where I come in, THE MANNER IN WHICH I WAS DISMISSED: BLAKE AND BILLY (so called "Office Managers) -Lacks professional courtesy, patience and understanding the needs of the Patient. -Lacks consistency within the 2 office teams when communicating information regarding patients. Rude with a very bad attitude when confronted with patients, on the phone or in person. Dr Powell -Does not communicate honestly and directly with his patient. -Leaves important tasks (such as relaying info) to his 'office managers' who handle the situation even worse. -When it comes to NOT WANTING to continue treating a particular patient due to not feeling comfortable prescribing pain meds, referring patient to a Pain Med specialist instead. -Real reason (most likely) is that he does not make money on solely writing Prescriptions, and being seen every 6 weeks per Workman Comp guidelines. (He wrote 3 prescriptions in 3 months with limited quantity only, is this too much ? ) Receptionist -Santa Monica (the only positive person I came in contact with) Very Nice, helpful and does her best under the circumstances. Dr. Powell is a very well respected doctor in his field so this only my POV as a regular dude that needed a knee fixed. As I am generally in good health but I have had a few surgeries in my time as a semi-pro soccer player. I can speak from experience as to what I generally expect from heath care. You can read into it as you like, I may be expecting too much or I might be on to something. My surgery was to fix the pain caused by cartilage deterioration from years of running, he called it a micro fracture to get the cartilage to grow back. I will start with the Pros as I like to try an stay positive: Ultimately in the end my knee fills OK, I am 50yo now so how good could feel right? Now the Cons: Unbelievably long waits in the office for such a short visit by the actual doctor. One time I timed the visit at 2 mins 12 seconds after a 51 minute wait after my appointment time. As I was board and this was my 3rd visit I though I would time it for fun. This was pretty consistent with my previous visits. He is not into alternatives meds at all, surgery is his thing. I asked him if surgery is the way to go and he said its only way. I should have taken more time and looked around more before I just hopped on the table, this is my bad. Turns out their is another options called ORTHOVISC It worked wonders on my other knee with the same problem a year later, it was recommended to me by my new knee doctor. Post Surgery There were a couple of variables that he said he would not be sure about until he got in there and actually did the work. The variables would determine how long I would be on crutches so needless to say I was pretty anxious to hear about the details afterwords. When I woke up he was already gone, no big deal. My wife was in the waiting room, I figured she had the details. She said he never came out and talk to her. Had the nurse page him, no answer. I asked the nurse if I could go home? She said she was not given instructions on my case. I basically checked myself out of the hospital. He called me the next morning to see how I was doing and to make sure I had my leg on the machine? I said "Machine? What Machine?" he mention that I should of had my leg in motion after the surgery. I said Oh? An hour later the machine showed up at my house and my leg was now in motion. Fast forward 2 days. Post-op visit. Doc asked. Any pain in your calf? I say, yea, a feels like a muscle strain or something? Rushed me over the ER, there it was, blood clot. Turns out in the time waiting for the machine a DVT developed in my leg. This part sucked, 5 days of shots in my belly and 3 months of blood thinners. I went in for knee surgery and came out with a entirely different problem. DVT's are not the good doctors fault right? He said they were very rare, I don't believe that. I have had nothing short of excellent service provided by Dr. Powell and his Santa Monica staff. I recently had my second shoulder surgery (first, left, second, right) with Dr. Powell at the helm. I've been a patient of Dr. Powell's at the Santa Monica location for nearly ten years. While there were many in between years, whenever I would come in again, Dr. Powell and his staff would remember me, at least feign happy to see me, and treat me uniquely. So A1 in hospitality. As far as the surgery itself, Dr. Powell was confident, kind, expedient, precise, and thorough. My left shoulder returned to 100% strength and mobility and I expect the same again with the right upon my conclusion of physical therapy. Again, A1. Post-surgery follows suit. Worst experience I've ever had. Had an 8:30 am appointment, Left at 11:15 am and never got to see Dr. Powell. He was on a conference call. Why he was on a conference call when he had patients booked nobody could tell me They book appointments every 15 minutes. Went back a week later and waited for 1 1/2 hrs after my appointment time. He barely spent time with me and did not listen to what I told him and ordered the MRI for the wrong part. The place is a factory with NO individual care, Stay away. Six years ago Dr Powell performed meniscus surgery on my husband. He awakened from surgery in absolutely horrible pain and had to have a nerve block so I could get him home. He ended up with terrible pain in that knee and after several visits Dr Powell thought it was nerve pain and referred us to a pain Dr. He had almost 6 years of going to pain Drs, neurologist, physical therapy, acupuncture, etc and we finally found another Orthopedic surgeon that figured it out. He could hardly even walk at that point. The new Dr said it is his hip not his knee that is causing the pain! After an ex ray it showed that to be true. He had a hip replacement last May and is now pain free! I don't believe Dr Powell did anything wrong except not recognizing what was causing the pain. It took six years of pain which could of been prevented. My husband retired six years ago and could do nothing he wanted because he could hardly walk. I just wanted to tell this story Incase Dr Powell has another case where he can't figure out someone's knee pain. The hip pain can definitely affect the knee. There's really no way to pick a guy like this. You get lucky. Someone tells you to go somewhere and you randomly do, then you randomly compliment someone there and they happen to have just had the same injury you do, and somehow they're in the same profession. And they know your fear. And they're standing there as proof that you can be ok. 125% even. And they give you a name and a phone number of a guy you can trust to fix it. This is that guy. If you're already here reading this you probably are feeling f'd right now. The fear I felt was impacting. Debilitating. Shocking. This guy Dr. Powell is an ace mechanic for the body. He doesn't need this review. He kept the 2012 US Women's Olympic soccer team healthy so they could win Gold. He was a founding member of Sha Na Na and lived thru playing Woodstock to talk about it. Google this guy and watch him sing on tv. And then make an appointment and trust him with your injury and your fears. I'm a unique patient. There aren't many women drummers, and not many who play and record all styles, including METAL \m/. With this new 125% shoulder power, my drumming is steadier than ever, and I find I have more choices with patterns. In 7 months I was back in the studio drumming, recording a metal tune with people from Dio and Yngwie. When I got hurt I needed a guy who understood where my fear and I were coming from. A guy who could evaluate, offer options with the latest tools, and outline exactly where I needed to go. Then expertly get me there. This is that guy. I can not express in words my gratitude and appreciation in having the opportunity and good fortune in seeing Dr. Powell. He is a remarkable orthopedic surgeon and if you can believe it, he recommended I NOT have surgery for my meniscus tear. He expressed that in medical school he was taught "do no harm" and he felt doing surgery on my tear would not necessarily solve my problem. I was treated with courtesy and respect by his office staff, my appointment was on time and the whole experience was positive. Thank you Dr Powell. Not a chance! I went to his Burbank office with my daughter for a second opinion. Having read the reviews about their policy to cancel your appointment if you show up late; I figured that they would be somewhat timely in seeing their patients. Nope. Over an hour late in the waiting room; then to spend another 40 minutes in the exam room waiting to see the doctor. Yep, this is a guy that cares a lot about his patients, their schedule and their needs. He then went on to blame me and say that there was a lot of paperwork to assemble. We arrived with x-ray on CD and had the MRI and x-ray reports faxed over; plus we had the MRI emailed to us while we were waiting. If it takes this guy an hour and a half to read two faxes then he's probably not the guy you want evaluating you or doing surgery. He then became indignant when he told me we could reschedule and I told him we would seek medical attention from a provider that would treat us more respectfully. read more
