Well, what a "painful" journey I have been on these last almost 3 months, since my complicated hand surgery. I am so happy to report that the worst is over!!! Quadruple YAYS x 1000!! I have been seeing Dr. Sull for almost 5 years and I am so happy to tell everyone that wants to listen to me "how amazing, brilliant, kind, incredibly informative, thorough, intelligent, and calm this surgeon is ... " Best of all HE GETS ME! This experience has taught me this mantra and that is: SLOW THE HECK DOWN!! And be PATIENT... needless to say I'm an extremely impatient patient, and this has been my biggest lesson! Happy to report that the results are fantastic and extra soon, I will be my old "maniac " self. I have to be very careful in my exercise routine AND pay attention to how much weight I put on this hand. Funny, how much I use my left hand naturally without thinking. I really cannot say enough, how much I appreciate this man and if I had to do it all over again, he would still be the man that would be my choice!! Every staff person at Kerlan-Jobe is a gem! My wife tripped and fell shattering her wrist into several small pieces. I took her to St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica just before Memorial Day weekend. While we sat for several hours in emergency waiting for the perfect Doctor, entered Dr. Sull. We couldn't have been more fortunate than to get such a superb and brilliant Surgeon! After a 3 hour operation he came to tell me and my wife how he had to reconstruct many broken pieces of bone back together, and put in some screws and a plate. His hands on aftercare and and advice in the hospital and later in his office was beyond remarkable. Not only is he a brilliant surgeon, he is also a great communicator and a compassionate personable Doctor. I cannot recommend he and his staff more highly. read more

I self-referred for a second opinion and I was very pleased with Dr. Sull's medical expertise and opinion on the treatment options for my condition. He is focused but easy to talk to. Extremely intelligent without a scintilla of arrogance. He takes the time to establish a thorough patient history and was definitive yet tactful in his perspective. It has now been over a year since Dr. Sull performed surgery on the severed tendon in my left hand. During the initial four months, I was under the care of the PA, as Dr. Sull was unavailable. Despite suffering extreme pain from CRPS, the office did not assist me in finding a closer occupational therapist in Orange County. Dr. Sull only began to directly address my case after his PA left. Recovering from a severed tendon has proven much more challenging than from a broken bone. I am still undergoing occupational therapy, but I have serious doubts about the full recovery of my hand. The scar tissue from the surgery is severe, and I fear I may never regain full functionality. read more

I saw Dr. Sull last month after a bad fall. He is incredibly thorough and this is one of the best doctor's and medical experiences I have had - shared with Dr. Kidd and Dr. Polakof who are in the same office. I have been a patient at UCLA since 2022 and the providers there don't even look at you. Dr. Sull had Derek Calderone do xrays, who was kind and supportive. Dr. Sull then reviewed them with me thoroughly so I understood what he was seeing. He referred me for a contrast MRI to be safe. Teresa at the front desk was lovely upon check in and helped me with all the referrals I needed for the MRI and follow ups. I can't recommend Dr. Sull or his colleagues enough. I was terrified to see an orthopedist or any pain management specialist, because of bad experiences at UCLA where they immediately jump to surgery. After tripping on the uneven sidewalk and breaking my wrist bone in two places, my new HMO sent me to Dr. Sull. I was very nervous and emotional when he told me I needed surgery but he was very direct and confident that I would be fine. He also put my broken wrist in a traction device and soft cast right there in the office which gave me tremendous relief. The day of the surgery went seamlessly and I was confident with his whole team, especially his assistant Mitch who did a follow up call that night to answer questions I had since I didn't really remember much of the procedure due to the anesthesia. Dr. Sull is an extremely compassionate, caring, competent and overall GREAT physician and surgeon. After a sports injury leaving my ring finger broken and awkwardly bent, Dr. Sull performed an intricate surgery on very small bones to correct the injury. Now my finger is 100% and you can't tell such an unsightly injury existed. I would recommend Dr. Sull for minor hand/surgical repairs to repairing the most severe injuries. So disappointing. I had pain in my neck, shoulder and arm but dr Sull refused to evaluate my condition due to not having enough time as he claimed. He told me that I had to pick only one part of my body in order for him to check me. I picked my arm and he only checked my arm which obviously was not the source of my pain. Imagine 200 lbs of body weight flying forward at 20 mph and landing squarely on the elbow. This accident happened to me and I found myself at St. John's hospital in Santa Monica on a Friday night. My humerus was broken and split, the arm was dislocated, and the pain was excruciating. Fortunately for me, Dr. Alan Sull came to my rescue. He stayed late into the evening, performing an emergency 6-8 hour surgery on my arm, piecing everything back together with a series of bolts, screws, and metal plates. Over the past 3 months, I've been in physical therapy working to regain range of motion. Believe it or not, I've nearly regained all of that range in this extremely short period of time. I was initially told in the ER that this was what they called a "life changing injury" and I should not have high expectations for the arm recovering fully and should expect 6-12 months of therapy. I believe that my rapid recovery was due 100% to the incredible work of Dr. Sull. He not only performed the surgery well, but my scar looks great, and he was very pleasant and nice to work with in all of my follow up appointments. You can tell Dr. Sull cares about his patients and he's the archetypal image of the consummate medical professional. All doctors should aspire to be like Dr. Sull. My fiancé and I are so thankful that Dr. Sull was in the hospital that night and came to my rescue. I highly recommend Dr. Sull for all of your arm needs, should you ever be in a situation like mine. Everyone in the office did an exceptional job making me feel comfortable and like my questions were heard and answered before moving forward. To anyone else who's reading this NTOS is a complicated nerve compression at the root of the neck that mimics the symptoms of other hand nerve issues and it often takes people 10 years or even more to get diagnosed correctly with bunch of unnecessary surgery....and then it's too late. I was diagnosed by Dr Sull in the first visit 2 month into my injury, even though TOS is not his specialty and he sent to the right doctors and it helped me so much. I tore a muscle in my left arm. Very painful and disabling. My Primary Care Physician referred me to Dr Sull. He saw me right away; quickly did and ordered all necessary tests, Dr Sull was very kind and very re-assuring. Dr Sull referred me for Physical Therapy. The results have been wonderful. I landed myself in the emergency room after an ankle injury at LAX, on my way to try and fly home to the Bay Area. After about 6 hours in the ER, and learning that I had a Trimalleolar fracture of my ankle, the Dr. there told me that they were calling in their Orthopedist from home which happened to be Dr. Sull, to reduce my ankle back into place, and bandage me up, so I could fly home and get care where I had family support. Dr. Sull was incredible to work with, explained every single thing he was doing, was very in tune with me and my struggles with anxiety due to medical procedures, and took great care to not torture me! We did not do a surgical reduction, I got my surgery at home the next evening but he got me wrapped up tight enough so I could get on an airplane and go home! When my 89 year old ex mother in law about a year ago fell and suffered a severe pelvis fracture and and a very complex fracture of her wrist, we took her to the St. John's ER since I was a practicing orthopedist there for several decades, retiring a year or so ago, and knew some good hand surgeons there. Unfortunately, none of these surgeons were available that morning. We got a referral to Dr. Alan Sul, who I did not know. I saw he had excellent credentials. As a retired orthopedist, I saw the xrays and recognized that she had a very complex wrist fracture which would be challenging to repair. Dr. Sul came promptly and said quietly he could fix it for her. And he did just that. She had the wrist operation and got a great result. She now has normal function and no pain almost a year later. I was very impressed with his surgical skill. We are all very grateful to him. I wanted to write him to thank him but did not have his email and thought maybe a Yelp review would be a good way to thank him. read more

Dr. Sull is great. More than completely competent, knowledgeable, personable, and thorough in explaining everything a patient needs to know before surgery. I was extremely anxious and nervous about finding the right surgeon when I broke my wrist, as I work with my hands professionally (I'm a musician). Dr. Sull understood what was at stake, seemed to know exactly how he was going to fix my break, and four weeks after surgery I was playing again. A couple of weeks later, nearly full range of motion.
