The garlic rice is absolutely worth the extra $3, no question. And all of the pickled veggies across dishes were standouts (bright, flavorful, and balanced everything really well). The chicken bao was probably my favorite bite. It was packed with meat and layered with pickled veggies, would probably order a full plate of those (wish I had taken a better picture). The lechon isn't the traditional rolled style--it's more like softer chicharrones with two large sheets of crispy skin. Not traditional, but honestly delicious and very satisfying texture-wise. Not pictured but took the ube flan and regular flan home and it was delicious. Not sure what they add to the caramel but it felt slightly richer than usual. Super good.

The whiff of the food definitely brings you back to the motherland. The spices and even the way it's cooked. Everything is authentic! Had I had a bigger appetite, I would have had a slice of the ube cake on the counter. Also, can't forget the calamansi juice! So refreshing! Everyone is extremely friendly and beyond respectful. These empanadas are homemade and the fillings are extraordinary, some of my favorite's are chicken with cheese, curry chicken, bbq chicken, coconut curry shrimp, burria with cheese and oxtail - all were phenomenal. Honestly the empanadas were so flavorful on thier own a dipping sauce wasn't necessary, but they had them... so I had to try them. Well let me tell you, thier sauces were just as good, I loved the honey buffalo and pineapple jerk sauce. At the event there were also two delicious pastas and a variety of three salads; peachy green salad, minty melon delight and a mango cucumber strawberry, each with its own homemade dressing. To top off the night, Angie made coquito, margarita and a peach punch, all weee very good but the margarita was my favorite. Needless to say, I went home full and satisfied! Angie's bites serves out of the Ravel Hotel, which has quite a few event spaces where they can cater and customize the menu to your liking. The staff is extremely professional and very enthusiastic about serving customers. I got the chance to meet Angie herself and she talked about her business with such passion. Angie has a very kind and sweet demeanor, she loves serving customers and loves hearing thier feedback. The business is fairly new, but Angie has been perfecting her recipes for quite some time. I know there are bright things ahead for this business and I highly recommend. Angie's Bites also ships to frozen empanadas to your home, so you can serve them at your personal intimate events.

Because the seasonings and spices, I would even say many of them are a crossover item, living somewhere between being empanadas and beef patties depending on the flavor. This is a good thing and a complement as they can arguably stand in a class by themselves. At one event there was also pasta, which was also tasty and more favorable than you may otherwise get from mass produced event food, without being overpowering. I have seen them work events at a bar/restaurant setting and in an event space, where they had control of the food presentation and did well. They are filling when eaten and most people won't just want one, because of flavor rather than being a size issue. I recommend trying these. Because they live in a special place that rises above a bland empanada, It's almost like they're cheating if you compare them to other items in the category.

While Red Grill is good, it doesn't compare to my favorite Mexican restaurants in Georgia and Florida. (And -- sorry Floridians -- it takes a lot for me to praise much of anything in your state.) I love good Mexican chicken soup. Red Grill's is nothing special. The broth tastes like Swanson's, which doesn't say much. And while there are plenty of vegetables and a generous portion of chicken, the soup falls short of expectations. I doctored mine up with every condiment available, which helped a little. I'm glad I added a last-minute quesadilla to my order. Again, not as good as my favorite -- this time in Virginia -- but decent. T enjoyed Red Grill's carnitas. He said they were fattier than last time, but hey - it's pork. Frozen margaritas were potent and only $8, perhaps because it was happy hour. I have to remember to ask for mine fruitier. What I do like are their chips and salsa. Chips look homemade and the salsa is spicy and chunky. Perhaps this is where we should go for cocktails and appetizers. Proximity to home is a plus.

We are very fond of sushi as a family. The progeny have been enjoying tekka maki and negihama maki…read moreever since they had enough chompers to gum them up. And before that, they ingested some very nice omakase meals in utero. For years, we've had a tradition of ordering makizushi by delivery just about every Friday night. It's what the progeny have come to call "Friday night food." We have a few go-tos for Friday night food, but on a whim -- mostly because it popped up on a food delivery app we use and we're susceptible to advertising -- we decided to try a new place: Suki Ichiro. I knew only that it's located on the Upper East Side and a stand-alone establishment, not part of a chain; it offers a number of different "party platters" that allow customers to choose which rolls they want included; it's inexpensive (a 12 roll party platter was only $84); and online reviews seemed to be both positive and real, not written by paid shills. I'm so glad we went with it. For our "Party Platter A," we selected twelve classic maki, mostly involving yellowtail, tuna, avocado, and cucumber in different combinations. (We're hidebound traditionalists and find ingredients like spicy mayo and salmon to be new-fangled abominations.) To our happy surprise, the maki was of excellent quality for this price point. The yellowtail and tuna neta were all non-fishy. (Hah, I realize what I just wrote.) Obviously, they weren't as flavorful or well cut as what you'd find at a spendier, medium- or upper-tier establishment, but for Friday night food... it wasn't too shabby! Avocado included in rolls was ripe, cucumber and other vegetables were fresh. The rice was proper, short-grained sushi rice, prepared to a good texture. Although it was seasoned with a touch more vinegar and sugar than what a serious itamae might use, nothing was beyond the realm of reason. It's so nice to shoot completely blind and find a place like Suki Ichiro.
