Met our friend Marianne w here for lunch when they opened at 11:00 a.m. she had had awakened at 4:00 a.m. just for the occasion. Wife and I had walked 2 mi les from 57th Street and 6th avenue to 92nd Street and 2nd avenue. Wife have the $16 lunch enchiladas with Red sauce and chicken while I have the $23 cochinnita pibil. My dish had chunks of pork covered with a spicy sauce and raw onions together with five corn tortillas. Ate everything except the lime flavored rice. Marianne at first had the empanadas with ground beef. However once they found out that she was allergic to tomatoes she changed her dish too a cheese quesadilla with no pico de gallo and no guacamole. Very small order for the $15 price and definitely much to bland for my wife or myself to eat. When the bill came they charged us for the empanadas that never came. Marianne spoke to the owners the next day and got her free empanadas a second dish courtesy of myself making the trip worthwhile. read more

I've found really good Mexican restaurants virtually everywhere I've lived -- except NYC. That is, until last night. Red Grill falls short of five stars, but I'd guess people in the neighborhood disagree. Tuesday night -- not a traditional 'going-out' night -- the place was hopping. Chicken fajitas come with a lot of sauteed peppers and an adequate amount of chicken. I enjoyed it. The frozen margarita? Maybe seven on a scale of ten. I like mine a little fruitier. I was impressed with my husband's carnitas. Had a bit of a kick and the meat was lean. Portions are big. Ambience is lively. Prices not terrible for Manhattan. And on a day when temperatures soared over 100 degrees, air conditioning worked well. I know we'll be back. read more

Best mexican restaurant in north Manhattan! Really enjoyed my experience sitting at the bar for lunch. The servers were very kind, quick, and checked in. I got the chicken burrito which was a huge portion. One of the best things I ate all trip. All the staff was bilingual. They have a wonderful drink selection, as well. Caught up with a friend for Taco Tuesday! The space is festive and lively with bright decor. We sat at a table by the windows, and got ourselves a margarita pitcher to cool off from the summer heat wave. Our server brought us chip and salsa to start before taking our orders. I got the chicken tacos and my friend got the burrito. Little did I know that my meal came with an included margarita or draft beer for taco Tuesday! So I got a draft Modelo as well. The tacos were loaded with chicken and steaming hot. The guacamole and hot sauce that came with it were fresh and delicious. I enjoyed the meal! The Red Grill was so much fun today with my friends from Sunnyvale California. Robert and Janeen visit me and graciously buy me lunch every six months! I love to enjoy their company and this was a good location. I love Mexican Food especially Quesadillas and Empanadas. Today I had the Cheese Quesadillas which were delicious! I cleaned my plate and I'll definitely be getting them again. I've got the Photos of Robert and Janeen's lunch and from their clean plates I think they enjoyed their meals. As for the service I appreciate my tomato allergy was taken seriously. As far as wait time considering I changed my order it was fairly reasonable. The server changed during our visit. The man was very prompt. The female took over and our plates were finally cleaned away but I had to go up to the bar to request our check. Robert and Janeen used the bathroom so I don't know what that was like. I did find the rest of the restaurant clean very comfortable. I love the decor that's colorful and cheerful artwork. My chicken dish was very good, it didn't need any added seasoning in my opinion. The chicken has a hint of salt and lime flavoring. The vegetables can come separately if you don't want it on the same dish. My favorite vegetable was the mushroom caps. The waitress was very nice and respectful to me. Everything in the restaurant is covered in beautiful Mexican art, I loved it. The front entrance is not wheelchair accessible but I was able to get it through a different entrance so it ended up being disability friendly. Please be careful and triple check your bill! They just tried to overcharge me deliberately but I checked the bill as the total amount seemed higher than expected. This was a pick up order. First, the girl taking my to-go order tried to charge me an extra $3 for the veggie taco salad (on the menu it clearly states it's 15.99, but she was trying to charge me 18.99, apart from the fact, the menu on the window has a price of 14.99 but that's ok , did not update it so I was like that fine). when i tell her hey I have been here few times and know what it costs, she then tells me let me check with my manager, comes back and says the system is wrong and she won't charge me the extra $3. At this point, I start to feel they are scamming me. I ask for the receipt, and again a scam. The first receipt is wrong where instead of giving the cash payment discount, they are adding it to the bill, not subtracting. I pointed out the mistake, and then she proceeds to print a new receipt by adding the cash discount but it is still wrong. This is the attached receipt and it gives a 3% discount but then adds it back below. The best part is - I ask for the manager and the manager instead of correcting the issue starts to tell me I am wrong and do I still want the food? I tell her your system is wrong and you should correct it, you cannot charge people like this , it's illegal. The balls on her , she tells me you want the 31 cents change? Do not patronize this place and if you do, please verify your check before playing. No idea what other shit they are pulling. read more

Forget the kitchy, cliché decor. I can only speak to what I tried. But of limited sample, this is serious, good mexican. The ceviche pescadoro was excellent. Tender white fish in a perfectly balanced citrus marinade that appeared to include not only lime but also orange juice for a delicate added sweetness. My friend had the chicken mole which was also very good. Service was attentive. Seems this spot is no secret--it quickly filled up just after 7pm. It's worth the effort. read more

Came in the other night for a drink with some family friends who live on the block. Great atmosphere and even better customer service by the three young woman who served us and the bus boy who sat us. I didn't eat anything but The burrito my friend ordered not only looked delicious but she said it was. We both got frozen coconut margaritas that were very strong and delicious peris andalicious. Wow, this was certainly not the place that I had expected. We came here with another couple to enjoy one of the local neighborhood Mexican restaurants and completely stumbled upon this place by accident. Totally unassuming on the outside, this place had a nice local authentic vibe to it with Latin music and friendly staff. We were seated in the corner on a cold snowy night and ordered sizzling hot fajitas mostly around the table. Starting out with drinks, the margaritas were excellent and we could easily taste all the spice. The fajitas were appropriately salted, which I might add is an often downside to many Mexican restaurants, and had plenty of sides to make you feel full. The prices were competitive and there was a huge menu to choose from. The guacamole is made on-site and even the chips are not overly greasy. Highly recommend this place which has made our top 10 list of restaurants on the upper east side. You won't regret it! read more

They're following all Covid guidelines and also provide each table with a bottle of hand sanitizer! By the time we were leaving tables were full! Complimentary chips and salsa are given once you sit down. Soooo good! Chips are not salty and the salsa isn't too spicy. For my meal I went with The Grilled Chicken Breast that comes with veggies, rice & beans. The chicken was a tad bit over cooked, veggies grilled to perfection and the rice was full of flavor. I also had a Mojito (lacking alcohol & too much mint) and a margarita (winner winner!!! Great punch to it). Although they were understaffed the waitresses came over periodically to check on us. Came here for dinner with my friends and the service was the worst I've had in a long time. First of all, we had to call out waitress, Maria D. several times just to place the order since after 15 minutes no one came to take our order. Drinks arrived 20 minutes after we ordered them. My friend asked for hot sauce, not creamy, since she doesn't like the texture. Had to remind the waitress 3 times and after 15 minutes we got a creamy version and got charged $3 - we told her we didn't eat it since we didn't want this. She told us we wanted the hotter one that's why she ordered it from the kitchen - nothing like that was said by anyone at our table. Lastly, there was 20% automatic gratuity, which she didn't tell us - we had 4 people, because after you get your receipt it still shows a tip line and to add suggested gratuity 20% or 25% - what a scam and a joke! Luckily my friend looked at the bill and stopped us before we left additional tip, which people probably have done a lot. Will never return here and I advise you to avoid it as well. read more

This place has excellent outdoor seating and is my go-to for happy hour and to grab drinks. They're strong, large, and well priced! The food is okay and a little overpriced which is why I gave it 4 stars. There is ample seating inside and outside. You shouldn't need to make a reservation. Absolutely delicious gourmet level authentic ceviche, carnitas michuacan (with amazing juice orange), cochinitas pibil (a Yucatan specialty you rarely see in restaurants). It was closing, time, but they couldn't have been niceri wanted to get a menu & see if they had Tamales , the one thing I have Not found in NY that was good. And I hit the JACKPOT OF the 3 different types, I ordered 1 red sauce & steak ( a bit too spicy for me) , & 1 green sauce with shredded chicken---which was. Not only did she help recommend some of the top dishes there that we ended up loving, but she also made delicious margaritas & was super attentive. I've from Southern California and very picky with my Mexican food and NYC has been disappointing. When Red Grille first opened during the pandemic we happened to stop in there to eat since they have these big open door windows and it made us feel safe. I AM so glad we stopped by, as it has become a favorite for us. We have taken many of our friends there as well and each and every one of them has been impressed. The food is excellent, well seasoned and spiced and cooked to perfection. First, this is one of the few Mexican restaurants that gives you your first basket of chips and salsa for free in NYC! In California, chips and salsa are always free! The entrees and appetizers are on point. They have excellent vegetarian tostados. They won't come out soggy and the salad taste very fresh. The cheese enchiladas are also very good, but average compared to some of the other food options on the menu. The vegetarian version of the California burrito reminds me of home - the French fries are crispy and the beans and rice inside are well flavored. They have 3 different hot sauces and I love them all! We always ask for all three. The drinks there are pretty good. They have goblet margaritas and pitchers as well with some really good and unique flavor options. They've also made us a combination of different flavored margaritas as well. A few friends and I checked into The Red Grill for a late afternoon brunch. This was my first time here upon recommendation from a friend, and I'd like to dine in again The food: - Margaritas: I highly recommend the Mango margarita pitcher. It was perfect for a group of 5 and the ratio of tequila, mango and lime juice just worked. - Tortilla Chips: They were double fried and paired well with the house salsa. We ordered a second plate. - Cali Nachos: Standard Nachos with lettuce, pico de gallo, guac and lots of cheese (though I wish they were spicier) - Queso Fundido: The queso was congealed, making it hard to eat with the tortilla wraps, however I am attributing this to cold temperature outside - Cheese Quesadilla: Standard cheese quesadilla. Here were the pros: - Quick to be seated - Generous portions - Attentive (despite being outdoors) Here were the cons: - Cold. Our group sat outdoors. This new restaurant opened up on my block so I had to try it. They have a lot of space and great outdoor dining. They have a party room in the back which will be useful post pandemic. I ordered churros to go a few days ago and absolutely devoured them. I didn't even realize it came with a side of vanilla ice cream but the churro itself was amazing. Now I came for a quick dinner on my own. The waiter was extremely friendly and helpful and gave suggestions for some authentic mexican dishes that you don't typically see. I saw they had frozen margaritas and have flavored ones as well. They let me mix the mango and coconut flavor and it was so yummy. The coconut was smooth and not like those fake coconut syrups you taste in other flavored margs. They also gave free chips and salsa. By the time i drank my marg and had the chips I was already almost full! I ordered 2 apps anyway - elote and the chicken mole in a corn flour tortilla. They were both super delicious. While the service started out fast, attentive, and great, after we received our food - they forgot to refill our waters and stopped checking on us. In regards to food and drinks... all spot on and delicious!!!! To start, they brought out homemade, hot and fresh tortilla chips with tomato salsa. We then ordered the queso fundido and holy cheeseballs - this was phenomenal, perfectly cheesy and topped with onions, peppers, and spiced chorizo!! For our entree meals, we ordered the shrimp stuffed fish (forgot what kind) doused in a rich chipotle sauce, including 6 peices of jumbo shrimp(!!!) + steak fajitas, which was seasoned and sizzling to perfection!! The salsa, especially the salsa verde, was actually more decent than I've had at other Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood. My friend and I had a lovely dinner at The Red Grill! The has a cozy, fun atmosphere and feels like a great place to come with family. We started with frozen margaritas - I was tempted to get the large but settled for the standard size (and slightly regret that choice because they were great). They also serve complimentary chips & salsa for the table! I usually go for tacos or enchiladas when getting Mexican food, but the octopus & shrimp ceviche tostadas sounded super good, so I chose that for my entree - they were absolutely delicious. The citrus in the ceviche was mild and the guacamole on the tostadas was very fresh. There was a generous portion of fish on every tostada and it was a perfect amount of food for an entree. My friend ordered enchiladas in mole sauce - I didn't try them myself but they looked delicious as well. For dessert, we shared flan and tres leches cake. I loved both, but would probably recommend the flan if I had to pick one over the other. An unexpected surprise was the calamari. It was so crispy and tender. It was served with a chipotle sauce instead of traditional marinara. Their chips and salsa were superb. I'm still giving it 4 stars because I think everyone is working so hard during Covid and I know this is not something to take for granted.
