Was passing by on a post christmas day. Most of the food places were closed and I was starving. Stopped by this place since it was one of the few places that was open. We stopped here to meet some friends. The interior is standard American-Mexican setup nothing spectacular but nice; the service was good, expedient, and friendly. The food was average, 350 combinations of beans, rice, tortilla and a meat. Kidding, there were lots of combinations. I had a ground beef taco and it was pretty tasty. Very much a disappointing experience. Based on the reviews we were hoping for a nice place to grab dinner on our drive back north. We walked in and it looked like your typical family Mexican restaurant. We were quickly seated and noticed an average crowd for early Saturday evening. The first sign that it wasn't going to be what were expecting or hoping for is that they didn't have a drink or margarita menu (I asked and the server looked at me like I had two heads). I asked if they could make a skinny margarita or something with fresh lime juice instead of sour mix. Crickets. Third try I asked for a margarita and he was quick to oblige this time. Typical sour mix laden margarita that was not refreshing but I'm sure most are fine with. The kicker was after we ordered our food, a shrimp quesadilla and steak fajitas, they came out two minutes later. The quesadilla was one of the saltiest meals I've ever had and the shredded cheese wasn't all the way melted. The fajitas weren't bad. I hate to give a bad review but we felt it was a seat em, feed em and street em type of place. read more

Stopped in not really knowing anything about this place. What a pleasant surprise. Spouse had Pollo Feliz and the ingredients were fresh and the chicken was cooked to perfection. I had the Pina Loca fajita. 1/2 fresh pineapple filled with shrimp, chicken and chorizo and vegetables and chunks of sweet fresh pineapple. Flan for desert was great. read more

Hub and I stopped for lunch at Mi Puerto recently on a drive from Tennessee to southwestern Virginia. We were familiar with this restaurant having stopped in Marion at Mi Puerto previously. This is what we were banking on: reasonably easy on and off from I-81, a good meal at a reasonable price, friendly service. Mi Puerto met all of our needs on this visit. They offer excellently priced lunch specials, as well regularly priced menu items. Hub had a taco plate from the lunch specials (under $10) while I had enchiladas from the regular menu. My meal was tasty, although fairly predictable vis-a-vis what you'd expect from similar Mexican restaurants. The ingredients were fresh and it was well-prepared. Hub enjoyed his choice, too. Our entire bill was less than $20 and we were in and out in about 30-minutes. The restaurant was filled at lunchtime, a testament to its place as a solid dining option. Mi Puerto is a good choice for a quick bite in Marion. read more

Being a local I frequent this place all the time. I have been patronizing this place since it's infancy. Sometimes as much as three times a week. The salsa is great. The service is mostly spot on (except for Sunday evenings for some reason?). The food is awesome and typically they have nice portions. HOWEVER (guess you saw that coming didn't you?), tonight I ordered my usual fajitas mix beef & chicken. When they brought them out it was very and let me emphasize VERY small portion. I ask the waitress if that was the kids portion and she smiled. I said that's not your usual portion. She said she'd get the manager. So I waited and didn't touch anything. When he came to the table he gave me a thumbs up. I showed him the portion and he turned and walked away. I figured he was going for more. I then started eating and finished well before my wife did which is unusual. The waitress came back to the table and I asked for the check. She gave me the check and I saw it was full price. I thought ok well I'll tell them about it at the register. I googled " how do you say the fajitas were great but not your normal size portion". So the manager took my check and never asked if everything was ok so I showed him what I googled. He read it and looked at me. I asked him if he could read that and he said "you should have said something before you started eating it". I said "I did I showed the waitress and you". He continued to ring me up. I said "how many times do you see me in here in a week?" He held up his finger and made a zero. I said really? I then said "are you going to let $10.00 come between us?" He laughed and shook his head. I said "See you in the grocery store" and walked out. So if your looking for good food and service this is typically the place. But after this experience I'm giving them 1 star. Yep, 1 star due to their lackadaisical, I could care less customer service to a loyal customer. I WAS a paying customer and always tipped well. I did not expect something for nothing but felt paying full price for a half portion with no negotiation was a crime. So this is probably petty to most, but to me it told me they don't care. Given that I'm not too picky when it comes to Mexican cuisine, this is a great place to go if you want a quick, cheap, and tasty meal. Ive been to this restaurant several times, and my favorite dish so far is the "Enchiladas Supremas." This dish comes with four enchiladas: beef, bean, chicken and cheese. Each enchilada tells a flavourful story, and they all come served under a blanket of lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and cheese. When mixed with the enchiladas, it results in a tasty perfection. In addition to having an extensive menu with a wide variety of meals, the service here is fast and friendly, especially if you speak Spanish! read more

I travel a LOT and am hispanic - the food is above average, the decor is quite nice, they are consistent, clean and reasonably priced and and the staff are very friendly, when seeing the reviews so people complained about the staff not being good, they are, they just don't take kindly to loud or condescending or ignorant people - I have seen them be insulted in numerous ways and handle it with cool aloofness - they aren't going to be overly solicitous to rude people for a tip, but they always have treated people with dignity and have forgiveness for those who don't mean to be rude. read more

For Marion this place is gonna be one of the better mexican restaurants but you've probably had better mexican food somewhere else. Don't let that put you off though. I enjoy eating here when I come to drive the Back of the Dragon. There is usually a large party of us that come in and the staff take exceptional care of us. read more

I was in the area hiking the Appalachian Trail and ended up in town for the evening. A local recommended this place and I wasn't disappointed. The food and service were as good as my hometown Mexican place. No real negatives that I can think of - maybe 3.5 stars would be a better rating. Mi Puerto Mexican Restaurant a very good place to eat in Marion, VA. Very authentic, the smells walking in the door will blow you away. you go take your seat. Then a waiter comes to you quickly. Gives you a menu asks what you will be having to drink. comes back with your drinks then asks if you are ready to order. i order a Burrito Grande which consisted of : Grilled chicken or beef (i got beef) mixed with rice and beans wrapped in a tortilla, then covered with cheese dip. YUMMM on the side of that i had beans and rice. Afterwards i had a very yummy desert called Xango which was soo good i mean wow. it consisted of : Creamy cheesecake wrapped in a pastry tortilla, fried until flaky and golden, then dusted with cinnamon and sugar. This Mexican restaurant is worth pulling off for in Marion. It's easy access to and from the highway. Staff was AWESOME - Service was FAST and FRIENDLY - and the food was OFF THE CHAIN. Everything tasted incredible and fresh - do I dare say homemade. We ordered Burrito Mexicana (white savory sauce) and Enchilada Mexicana (chicken w/everything grilled peppers and onions) Great place to practice your Spanish -should you be up for it. Visited Mi Puerto last evening with my grandkids for dinner. Waited at table over 15 minutes with no server, and the place really wasn't that busy. I had to go up front to ask for someone to wait on us. The folks are no at all friendly and the food was so-so. I felt like I may have had a Trump sticker on my forehead, (but I didn't ),by the way we were treated by this establishment. We won't be back and I'll pass my experience on to family and friends, but my guess is they could care less. Upon leaving and paying the $40 dollar tab, the cashier didn't say one word. read more

The worst Mexican food I have ever had. Ordered a Jamaican Margarita (a rita without sweet/sour mix) explained to the waiter that I did not want mixer....and it came with mixer. The waiter told me that was how they got the lime in (guess he didn't consider squeezing a lime). Sent the drink back. The quesadilla was advertized as "grilled"....it was just a tortilla stuffed then microwaved. I would guess that they don't really cook in the kitchen...just pull out frozen/canned stuff & microwave. read more

I was staying overnight in Marion, I was guided to Mi Puerto by the hotel manager (THANKS!) I was overwhelmed by the friendly staff, FAST service, accurate, hot (but not too spicy) FRESH food. The deep fried cheesecake dessert was excellent!!! cold beer and VERY reasonable prices. So good that I went out of my way to eat here again on my way back north 2 nights later, figuring that my first visit was a fluke, but I was wrong,,, same great dining experience and I think I was in and out within 30 minutes. I started eating at Mi Puerto about 7 years ago. Mu friend lives in Rural Retreat Va and she got me going there when I visit. Overall, the place is pretty good. The salsa is very good and the food is delicious. The ice tea is very good and the margaritas are supposedly good too although I have never had one but everyone raves about them. The rice and beans are tasty. Service is fast and efficient. The staff is friendly. Good cheese dip too. I recommend this restaurant when in SW Virginia. read more

This has become an annual tradition for our Memorial Day Weekend trip to the area! We hit this place on Saturday, just before 6p. Apparently, to did a lot of others. So, service was a bit sluggish at first. While we were seated right away, a number of others came in on our heels, so the servers were trying to play catch up. There were 10 of us, and we were not able to call ahead for a reservation, but that proved ok, in this case. We all had great food, and a number in our party really liked the $1.25 margarita specials and the dos equis specials, as well. We ordered a lot of things, but I can speak to the Texas fajitas for two (large portion and tasted great). Our son really liked the shrimp and rice, too, and our other son liked his three soft tacos. Another great experience! Our family from TX was quite impressed with the food and the prices, too, which was a compliment since they are from Houston and have access to all sorts of Mexican restaurants there! read more

I'm from this area, my kids grew up eating lots of Mexican food and lots from this place. Now I'm a travel nurse and have ate Mexican in Florida, California, Hawaii, Colorado, North Carolina, etc. I can honestly say- Mi Puerto in Marion Va is still the best Mexican place I have eaten! They believe in CHEESE, they are very large proportioned with their meal sizes, if you want flavor they have it, and the staff all work together to make your meal as wonderful as possible! Even during busy times (which almost all the time) they get your meal out to you in under ten minutes (I timed them once and for four of us it took 7 minutes) but while you are waiting you can have homemade spicy salsa and warm chips to feast on and if you like alcohol their pitcher of Dos Equis is not a bad price either. You can try their southern sweet tea mmmmm it's so tasty. The meal is Very affordable, flavorful, and I've NEVER been let down by this restaurant. bad bad bad and I'm pretty forgiving. more staff than customers and we were all but ignored. took 20 mins to get order taken after asking another waiter twice for service. not a happy place with no smiling or responses to 'thank you'. staff just didn't seem to like each other or the customers. about the food. veges not fresh. chips stale. meal had no flavor or spices. more of a bland brown sauce.
