First and foremost, the food was very good. Tasted like they use fresh ingredients. A little Tex-Mex in flavor profile (we prefer Baja style if there's a choice available) but very good overall. But come for the food--excellent range of choices, fresh and well-prepared. Ample servings especially for the price. Chips, salsa, cheese dip, all solid. Took a very slight detour off of 81 to try out this place and we were not disappointed! A LOT of food for the price! I had the shrimp, chicken and beef fajita. I forgot to take a photo when the food came out so the photo is after I had already eaten a full, very stuffed, fajita. My husband had the shrimp, chicken, beef and pineapple fajita and loved it. Staff were excellent. Warm tortilla chips and decent salsa that we could not stop eating. Food came out quick. Good margarita ($6.50). Hi I'm vegan FANTASTIC food here I had the taco salad and I am stuffed-- refried beans, zucchini, red yellow AND green peppers, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and lettuce all in a crispy taco shell. My husband had the vegetarian burrito and he was thrilled with the variety of veggies, all grilled perfectly. Just ask for no cheese or sour cream and you are all set. I have never been in a restaurant like this where the menu is on the waitress' phone. You have to scroll to see the menu while the waitress stands behind you waiting for your order. El Campestre gets a fourth star for being a super friendly and welcoming establishment. We arrived on the late side of their lunch hours and the waitress couldn't have been any sweeter. Five or six other tables filled up while we were there, but service remained attentive and amusing. The food was not what I'm used to, being from the Philadelphia/NewYork megalopolis, but it tasted homemade, the enchilada was stuffed with seasoned ground beef and sauteed onions and the salsa had some flavor, but lacked bite. Overall, my husband, one year old daughter who loves chips and salsa, and I were all happy to have happened upon this place, it's a great alternative to all the chains restaurants you pass while traveling. read more

Depending on whether you're a fan of "standard SW VA/NE TN Mexican joint" food(really should be it's own class of mexican food, but it's obviously only in this area), it's pretty average all across when compared to other similar joints. Very authintic(sp?) mexican food place. you go in and get prompt attention by the front desk clerk. a waiter takes you to your table/booth(whichever you prefer) then hands you this very large menu and then asks you what you will be having to drink. while gone to get drinks another waiter comes out serving you with tortilla chips and dip. they make a special dressing that (to me at least) looks like ranch dressing, but when you eat it, it has a little kick in the butt. which is awesome. i ordered the Quesadilla Deluxe which consisted of : A flour tortillia grilled and stuffeed with cheese, chopped beef and beans. Served with rice, lettuce, pico de gallo and sour cream. All in which was very yummy. one thing is for sure you will never walk out of this place feeling empty in the stomach region. and to end the meal i had a desert of fried ice cream which was very good it consisted of : Vanilla ice cream covered with rice krispies. served with whipped cream, honey, cinnamon and chocolate. and topped with a cherry YUMM. very good place to eat. the waiters are hot looking and nice. =] read more

I've been to a lot of Mexican Restaurants and this one is as good as any. Service is usually great and very fast. Food is great and the chips and salsa have always been fresh. Very affordable as well. The owner of the building says the managers maintain the building as if it were their own and the kitchen is exceptionally clean. read more

With this being the closest Mexican restaurant to home I am very happy that it is actually enjoyable and tasty. Service is always fairly fast and service that is more than you could ask for. Sometimes there is some confusion with some of the wait staff that have difficulty understanding English but nothing that can not be communicated by just showing it to them on the menu. The food is always GREAT and I can polish of the entire bit of the fajita taco salad, never a disappointment. read more

I have been ordering and consuming chile rellanos for over 30 years, some of them while I was in Mexico, but when I ordered the chile relleno at El Campestre Restaurant in Chilhowie, Virginia, I received a lukewarm diced up load of mush covered in cheese on my plate. When I inquired about my order being wrong, I was informed (loudly and in front of the whole restaurant) by the American co-owner that I didn't understand authentic Mexican cuisine, and that I ordered the wrong thing. The co- owner informed me I should have ordered a stuffed chile instead of a chile relleno if I wanted a stuffed pepper. By definition, chile (usually, but not limited to, a poblano pepper) + relleno (spanish for stuffed) translates to stuffed chile pepper. I tried to eat the unappetizing mess on my plate, but ended up leaving it on the table. My friend, (whose food was barely lukewarm) and our families will never waste our money by eating there again. The whole dining experience was awful. The co-owner was loud, condescending, and rude. read more
