To go with it, I subbed a salad instead of fries, and for a small up-charge, I had a half of their pear and blue salad sans the bacon. It was so good! I want to go back for a whole salad and try one of their flatbreads to go with it, so I can bring some leftovers home for lunch the next day. Wow. Just wow. This place was amazing. I would give it a 6 if I could. Everything was flawless. Run don't walk to come try it. My DD and I were in the area and noticed this on Yelp and decided to give it a try. It has a fun upscale dive bar atmosphere, it feels comfortable and lively all at the same time. There is a small bar near the front with 6 or so seats and the rest of the room is tables. We started with the garlic truffle fries. They were magnificent. Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft potato-ey on the inside. Likely double fried. The aioli was perfect and there was a lovely heap of truffle oil fried garlic piled in one corner of the bowl. We devoured them, I got a salad special of the day. It was arugula with beets, dried cranberries and pumpkin seeds with a house vinaigrette. I added shrimp to the salad. It was delicious. The shrimp were soft and cooked perfectly. The mellow flavor of the baby arugula made me think it was locally grown vs store bought. My DD got the avocado turkey club on ciabatta and more of those perfectly cooked fries. She loved it. The service was extra friendly. Our server was a lovely, sweet woman who got everything to us in a timely manner and offers us to go cup drinks. She kept the glasses appropriately refilled. This spot was an easy and casual lunch spot. I had heard that service speed can be hit or miss, but really wanted to try it out because of the name. The service was speedy and they were able to remove the bacon on the Mac and cheese sandwich for me. I think as a pub lunch it was more or less what I expected and fine, but my colleague's eggs were overcooked and rubbery in his salad. The server kept our drinks super full though, so that was nice. We found the Wooden Pickle in a road trip along interstate 81. Needing a break from fast food, we arrived about 8 o'clock for dinner. The friendly wait staff took good care of us, and the food was delicious. We had the crab dippers (six fritters to an order) the Philly cheesesteak and a caesar salad. Delicious. Small place with a big atmosphere. Patio lights span the ceiling and the brick wall on the right has your thinking you're on a patio or in a courtyard. They had tables fenced off on Main Street for a little chili festival the day of our visit. We decided to sit at the bar (we haven't been able to for SO long!). Just before we sat, we ran into Mike, a co-owner and asked him about the chalkboard special of "Mike's Damn Good Chili" and we asked him about the heat and consistency. He gave us details (fresh local beef, beans, veggies, etc.") and finished with, "you know, it's okay..." lol. We ordered the pickle fries appetizer... thin slivers if fresh pickle lightly battered and fried, served with ranch dipping sauce. While the flavor was good, we found the "fries" to not be crispy enough. A few more minutes in the dryer would have made these perfect!! My husband went for the chili and raved about how fresh it tasted and how many veggies were packed into it. He ordered a dollop of sour cream and a large cube of cornbread (both complimentary!!). It was a STEAL at only $5 for a bowl. I went for the fish tacos that were recommended by a festival booth staffer a block or so from the restaurant. I've had fish tacos up and down the East Coast but these truly were the BEST I've ever had. Each taco was "street size"; The trio came with well seasoned, lightly pan-seared mahi, topped with crispy cabbage slaw and an aioli that was a tad spicy but a perfect compliment. Two lime wedges served as a garnish but I put them (& another wedge I ordered) to work, splashing each taco with the fresh citrus juice. No sides came with the tacos and it's a good thing because I had no room! This is a locally owned and operated, laid back and easy going place. Locals frequented the establishment as evidenced by the friendly greetings by staff and fellow patrons, many of which whose drink order was remembered. If we lived in Marion, I'm CERTAIN I'd be one of them known by name!! If you're even NEAR Marion, you owe it to yourself to stop here, belly up to the bar or kick back under the lights and enjoy some fresh food with friends! read more

Here we are in a southwestern Virginia small town, Marion, and we arrive late and pick the place because of the name, Wooden Pickle, because it's late. Found this place in Marion, Va yesterday evening and we could not have been more pleased. The food and service were amazing and we would highly recommend. Lindsay was our server and she was an absolute gem. The server was quite nice and very attentive. However, "someone grabbed" the dinner entree she ordered for one of our party of six, and they weren't served the replacement meal for 20 minutes. Some of the sides we ordered never came, and our to-go desserts were put in mislabeled styrofoam boxes, so we all went home with the wrong food. Best advice: Don't order the "ultimate grilled cheese sandwich." What I was served was mac and cheese (expected) on un-grilled, half soggy white bread (wtf). Seriously, the bread was not browned or apparently "grilled" at all. It was a soggy, congealed mess, genuinely disgusting and nearly inedible.
