But we were staying in a cabin along the Virginia Creeper Trail, and walking the trail into town for a traditional Southern breakfast sounded like the more authentic mountain-town experience. I'm so glad we did. The portions were huge, the prices were incredibly reasonable, and everything we tried was good. My husband ordered "The Hog"--2 eggs, country potatoes, sausage, bacon and pork loin. The sausage was his favorite of the meats. I had the Mt. Rogers with 3 eggs, hash brown casserole, and upgraded to the 8-oz sirloin. Both meals came with toast or a biscuit, grits, and peppered sausage gravy. They were out of biscuits, so we had white and sourdough toast instead, and it was all good. The food was hearty, traditional, and exactly what I was craving. But what really made the experience was the Southern hospitality. The young woman serving and the host were both so kind and cheerful. Sometimes the best travel experiences aren't the trendy places--they're the local spots where you walk in hungry, leave completely stuffed, and feel genuinely welcomed. The waitress was friendly and the bathrooms were very clean. The women's room was well stocked with good quality toilet paper (why must this be so rare?!) and paper towels. It even had a hook on the back of the door for any bags or jackets you may want to hang up- it's the little things! The pricing was shockingly amazing! We spent $34 for 4 meals, a coffee, and two add-ons. The ambiance is casual and cute, and the building is decorated nicely. The family and I were on an adventure, heading up to Niagara Falls. I was using my trusty Yelp app to try to find a cool lunch spot. I saw Skeeter's, and knew we had to try it. So we jumped off the interstate, and wound our way down to the quaint downtown of Wytheville. It's a beautiful little town, and also the birthplace of Edith Boling Wilson, wife of President Woodrow Wilson. So we rolled into town and spotted Skeeter's nostalgic brick corner building. Very cool looking, and fitting for the 101 year old business. Alas, we got out of the car and excitedly walked up to the door,,, to find a CLOSED sign. We looked through the window, and could tell that we were missing something special. So we walked down to the street to a pizza place, and had a less than stellar lunch. Actually, it was just bad. So, went went off on our Niagara adventure, and a few days later we were heading home. It was nearing lunchtime, and we saw the sign for Wytheville. My wife said, why don't we try Skeeter's again. I called to make sure they were open, and we hit the streets of Wytheville again. We found a table at Skeeter's and started looking over the menu. They have plenty to offer besides hot dogs, but we had to try these world famous dogs. My wife and son got the regular "red weiner" dogs with fries. I had to go for the big 1/4 pound Black Angus dog. I was happy to find that they were in the process of changing their store over from Pepsi to Coke! As I said up at the top of this review, Skeeter's certainly lived up to the World Famous Hot Dog moniker! My big Black Angus dog was so good, that I had to order a second one! I think I can safely say, that if Skeeter's had been open on our way north, we would have still stopped on the way back, to enjoy it again! We found nothing bad to say about Skeeter's. The atmosphere, the decor, the food, the prices, the staff... all were absolutely wonderful! This is the kind of small town, hidden gem, that I love to find in my travels! We'll be back!
