In my never ending search for a great hot dog, I found my way to Skeeter's World Famous Hot Dogs in Wytheville, VA. I'll say right up front that they certainly lived up to that name. The family and I were on an adventure, heading up to Niagara Falls. I was using my trusty Yelp app to try to find a cool lunch spot. I saw Skeeter's, and knew we had to try it. So we jumped off the interstate, and wound our way down to the quaint downtown of Wytheville. It's a beautiful little town, and also the birthplace of Edith Boling Wilson, wife of President Woodrow Wilson. So we rolled into town and spotted Skeeter's nostalgic brick corner building. Very cool looking, and fitting for the 101 year old business. Alas, we got out of the car and excitedly walked up to the door,,, to find a CLOSED sign. We looked through the window, and could tell that we were missing something special. So we walked down to the street to a pizza place, and had a less than stellar lunch. Actually, it was just bad. So, went went off on our Niagara adventure, and a few days later we were heading home. It was nearing lunchtime, and we saw the sign for Wytheville. My wife said, why don't we try Skeeter's again. I called to make sure they were open, and we hit the streets of Wytheville again. We found a table at Skeeter's and started looking over the menu. They have plenty to offer besides hot dogs, but we had to try these world famous dogs. My wife and son got the regular "red weiner" dogs with fries. I had to go for the big 1/4 pound Black Angus dog. I was happy to find that they were in the process of changing their store over from Pepsi to Coke! As I said up at the top of this review, Skeeter's certainly lived up to the World Famous Hot Dog moniker! My big Black Angus dog was so good, that I had to order a second one! I think I can safely say, that if Skeeter's had been open on our way north, we would have still stopped on the way back, to enjoy it again! We found nothing bad to say about Skeeter's. The atmosphere, the decor, the food, the prices, the staff... all were absolutely wonderful! This is the kind of small town, hidden gem, that I love to find in my travels! We'll be back! read more

We stopped by Skeeter's Hot Dogs while walking through downtown, and honestly the setting alone is worth a visit. It's in this really charming historic building (apparently where First Lady Edith Wilson was born), and the whole place has that nostalgic mid-1900s vibe that just feels cozy and fun. Super cute spot. Our waitress was also really friendly and made us feel welcome right away, which always makes a difference. That said... the food itself was just kind of average. The hot dogs and fries weren't bad at all, just nothing that really stood out. For a place that's been around for over 100 years, I guess I was expecting something a little more memorable. It ended up tasting like something I could grab at a random country gas station. Overall, I'm glad we stopped in for the atmosphere and history, but probably wouldn't go out of my way for the food alone. read more

I had always been a customer of here, but after my experience today might be iffy if I decide to come back or not. Drove over an hour as well. I have always talked highly of this establishment but something has failed since the last time we were up. 2 1/2 hours before closing on Sunday July 26... the waitress meets us at the front door to make sure to tell it would be a 45 min to a hour before we got our food. And they stopped serving French fries. Hmmmmm then in the next few sentences afterwards says they ran out. If you knew you were going to be low...then you head to the store and get enough to get you by. Disappointed customers like we was to have sharing their experiences to everyone. We went across the street to Burger Express... they had a packed house and still ordered our food and received it in less than 10 minutes. The food was amazing. Directly across the street from my hotel, I found Skeeter's Hot Dogs, sometimes known as Skeeter's-Umberger, E. N. with E. N. Umberger being the name of the owner that started the store back in 1925. Skeeter's, it turns out, is a local tradition for having hot dogs. It's spotlessly clean, has charm, and is totally friendly with great service. Their main dog is the Skeeter Dog which is enhanced with condiments of mustard, onion and chili, no ketchup. Matter of fact in the true dyed-in-the-wool type of hot dog aficionado, their hot dog selections shy away from the use of ketchup. I had one of their Skeeter Dogs and loved it. They also have their Regional Classics like the Cheese Coney, Big Tex with jalapenos, chili, cheese and bacon plus a number of others, but unfortunately, no Chicago. I was really wanting to give this 5 stars at first, but I just can't. Cute place inside. We were greeted by a very friendly young man and he took our order. I really wanted a Slush Puppy, because I haven't had an actual Slush Puppy in years. Although it was good, I'm not convinced it was actually a true Slush Puppy. Anyway, the food was great. We ordered a plain dog with mustard and a side of fries, as well as the footlong "Matt" hotdog. The reason for my 3 star-because once we were given our food, no one ever came back to check in. They were getting busy, so that was probably part of it. We sat and waited about 15 minutes after we had finished as we were going to get another hot dog. We decided to not. Finally a girl came over and asked if things were good, and we just asked for the check. Overall, good hotdogs, I think they were just a little overwhelmed with only 2 people serving the restaurant and running the register for take out orders and Door Dashers. Umberger Store has been around since the mid '20s and offers their 'world famous hot dogs' of various styles (Skeeterdogs and regional classics); if you're not in the mood for hot dogs, there are also sandwiches, sides, and desserts. The hubs and I stopped by while we were doing a mini road trip. I ordered the Skeeterdog, which came with mustard, diced onions and chili. Sadly, I just wasn't a fan. Not sure what kind of hot dogs this place uses, but it was just not tasty. The slaw was okay, and the chili was forgettable. Even with the combination of the toppings, it just wasn't an enjoyable dog. Service was very friendly, and I only saw that there was one employee working the counter and the tables. I found this place as I was looking for a new gas station because my regular one was closed. I didn't know what to expect but the place looked enticing. Everything was perfect from the service to all the food I ordered. The fries were hot the hot dog was good and the BBQ was beyond what I expected. Stopped here last November. I remember the sign "world's best hot dog" so I had to try one. It was 9:00 am. and we were staying across the street in the Bolling Wilson Hotel. The conversation went like this: "I want two hot dogs with everything on them." I'm sorry we don't serve hotdogs for breakfast" "We're checking out in 30 minutes. I had a chili dog and a hotdog with everything on it. The hotdogs were good, not great. They were a little sloppy to eat, especially while driving. World Best? I think not. Stopped in Wytheville for some quick food on our way from Michigan to Myrtle Beach. Found Skeeters on Yelp and thought we'd give it a shot. Perfect place for DDD if they were to stop there. The menu was simple and short which made ordering quite easy. Three styles of the dogs and in any combination from there, chili, cheese, slaw with other typical condiments. Between the four of us we had them all and we were all very satisfied. The dogs have been the same for decades and I understand why. If it works, don't screw with it. The service was good and fast. Martha seemed a little annoyed with one of our party member's questions but she took it well. The counters could've used a little cleaning but I'm okay with some grime at a good dive. Another absolutely iconic Southern chili dog joint - and make no mistake, it is a joint, and a tiny one at that. Folks who come need to understand what this place, and others like it, are - they serve a Southern chili dog that consists of a red wiener, meaty chili with some flavor, on a soft googy bun, with a healthy smear of mustard, freshly cut onions, and/or a creamy cole slaw. They do that here, and if you are eating there, they give you your hot dog on a napkin, not on a plate, there is no bath room available, and there is no lemon for your water. I didn't think it was anything special. As my husband said, it was more about the history. That's what brought us there to begin with. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. We both ordered hot dogs, and I ordered fries, while hubby ordered chips. The hot dogs were just normal hot dogs. Every hot dog came with mustard, onion, and chili. I ordered mine without the mustard and onions, and opted for cheese instead. I didn't think anything was special about it. It was a red hot dog, but we've have those before. French fries were just normal frozen french fries. The lady running the register was a little less than desirable. Honestly, this place ruined Wytheville for me. We chose to stop here on our way from Pennsylvania to South Carolina after reading on numerous sites that this was a quaint friendly town. While two of the other employees were very polite, I cannot say that about the woman at the register. My 20 month old daughter had a small fit when I was putting her into her high chair. No exaggerations, she cried for less than 30 seconds, but I guess it was too much for the older brown haired woman working up front, she shook her head, loudly said, "jes** Ch****" and apologized to the patrons at the counter who didn't seemed phased by the crying. Really not good. The two guys working today were nice, but no clue how handle a rush. If you are ordering in a group, you will not all eat at the same time. If you order more than one thing for yourself, you won't eat those together either. Their timing is really off. Fries first then a hot dog in 15 minutes. Beautiful store, great idea.
