OK, I used to LOVE going to Mi Mexico, and drooled for a week when I knew a visit was coming up. My passion? The Seafood Enchiladas. OMG SOOOO good! Have to agree with previous review -- not exactly sure how this place got 4 stars. The food, even for crappy American style Mexican food, is rather bland and lacks serious authenticity. My tortillas for the tacos were covered in oil; the beans straight out of a can with a lot of water added to thin them. I will give them points for the meat being seasoned nicely. The margarita was fine- at least it wasn't a weak pour or over use of the sugary mixer. The service was fine- nothing spectacular (never checked on us after serving). If desperate, it's edible but you're probably better off finding something else. read more

This was my favorite Mexican restaurant for years --going way back to when they were in the location where the dollar store is now. However, in the past year--I've been there three times--and each time the food was nothing like it use to be. It was bland--tasted like it came out of a can--no flavor and lots of bland rice! My friend was also less than thrilled with their order--after three tries--I'm done with ever going there again. I love Mexican food--will be looking for a new restaurant. read more

I was quite amazed to see this mediocre restaurant at the top of the Mexican restaurants in Bellingham. It just shows that most people are looking for bland food that caters to delicate Northwest palates. I also found the service disappointing. The restaurant looks huge from the outside, but when you get in, there really is a fairly limited main area, which is not decorated particularly well. A huge area is available for groups. read more

Spent last weekend in Bellingham and went to Yelp to see where to eat out with grandkids. Mi Mexico reviews were impressive. Unfortunately, Mi Mexico was not. Okay, the pitchers of water and the chips and salsa hit the table quickly. Then, the wait service disappeared. Extensive child's menu? Nope. Just a small note that indicated a choice of entree with beans and rice for $3.50. Not complaining, but the wait after that was incredible. One would think with half the order being 3 child plates that it would be a 1-2-3 quick deal. Had to flag the waiter to bring a soda refill at $2 for all you could drink. Had to question why we went through double baskets of chips and salsa before we got service. Had to wonder why it is necessary to charge so much for some bean dip for the chips. Food tasted good, but this was nothing special. I'll search before I eat Mexican food in Bellingham again. read more

I came to this place about six years ago, but had forgotten about it until today when my bf and I came across it again while making a pit stop at the nearby McDonalds for a coffee after driving from Vancouver to Bellis Fair. So glad I found it again! Same great food as before and same great service. Very generous also as they brought us more fresh salsa and tortilla chips after we devoured the first batch and all complimentary! The food when it arrived was similarly very generous in portion. My bf had the chipotle chicken combo which came with lots of mushrooms and chicken and a chipotle sauce with rice, salad, and refried beans. The chipotle chicken was spicy, delicious, and piping hot. I had the appetizer chicken quesadilla which was your standard quesadilla with guacamole and sour cream, but honestly, for an appetizer it was large enough for a full meal plus I had some leftovers to take home. The bill was amazingly reasonable - $33 for the food plus a glass of red wine and a delicious large margarita! We left very full and very satisfied with our experience. read more

Not impressed! Went to this restaurant with friends a few days ago. Ordered a combination plate with one cheese enchilada, one ground beef taco, beans and rice. The enchilada sauce was acceptable but the cheese used throughout the plate was horrible tasting mild, yellow cheddar. The service was very good. When I suggested to the waiter that the food would be remarkably improved by using Mexican white cheese. He responded that the owner would not allow them to use the suggested cheese because it would cost him too much money. Not recommending this restaurant at all. If they were operating like this in South Tucson, Arizona, they'd be "run out of town" very quickly. read more

I had been coming to this restaurant for a long time but I will not come again. I ordered a carne asada at 12:30, noon, from the lunch menu. When my good arrived, it was a giant plate; it was the dinner size menu that they charge 20 dollars for, versus the 12 dollar lunch size that I saw on the menu. I mentioned to one server that I had not ordered that. He said not to worry that I would be charged would be for what I ordered: a lunch meal. When the bill came, I was in fact billed 19.99. When I asked the female server to make the correction, she said yes, it was her mistake, BUT, she explained, (with a very exaggerated look of sadness on her face) that she would have to pay for it out of her pocket if I did not pay the full 20 dollars. That particular woman looked pretty in charge of the place and was probably the owner's wife thinking she'd outsmart the dumb Canadians down there for the long weekend by squeezing an extra 8 bucks out of the table. If that is not the case, then I still will not go back to this place because if an owner DOES in fact penalize his servers by having them pay out of pocket for an incorrect order, then that is as unethical as the "Oh sorry, I didn't know that you wanted a lunch size meal, at lunch time, from the lunch menu I bought you..." shtick. What ever happened to just doing business with some honesty and integrity? Your customers are Canadians, not morons. read more

I'm actually disappointed that I have to give any stars. This place is the biggest joke. 1st the silverware was dirty and we had to ask for more 3 times before they remembered to bring them. 2nd when we got our drinks 2 of them had Tomatoes floating in them. 3rd the salsa and chips are terrible! The "salsa" tastes like tomato juice with a few onions tossed in, not blended with any spice or flavor and the chips were tasteless crap. I'm mad that we didn't leave then. Now we order our food and when it came they slammed the plate down so hard that everyone around us turned to see what happened. I got fajitas and had to wait almost 5 minutes before they came back with my tortillas, there literally is no flavor to the steak or the vegetables, completely bland slop. Plus losing heat as I wait for the tortillas. The rice and beans have no flavor, but at least they were warm. The other 2 with me got the enchiladas and that was a waste of time. No flavor, lukewarm and have no redeeming qualities. At this point I'm so mad at myself for picking this place. Never again and I honestly don't understand how any single person could recommend this place. I wish like hell I would have dined and dashed, because we basically threw $41 in the trash. I would recommend Taco Bell for a better Mexican meal before I recommend this s-hole. read more

I'm writing this review as I'm sitting in this restaurant. So far I've had their complimentary C n S and I'll give it 3/5. I'm also having a Rita Rox and I must say it's excellent: 4/5. The female server, an older lady, is clearly not happy to be here and looks frustrated and tired. A very friendly male server just brought my albondago soup. It's huge and hot. I used to live in Houston so I know a little bit about Mexican food (Tex-Mex any way) and this soup is excellent and did I mention it's huge? I'm a big eater yet I was only able to finish less than half the bowl. I did eat all the meatballs , however, as they were excellent. The soup is definitely a 4/5. For dinner I've ordered the carne asada (I know, not very adventurous) but since this is my first time here I decided to go with a staple. By the way I chose this place bc I'm staying at the Best Western hotel across the parking lot. Okay so just finished eating about half of my carne asada. Again the portions are gigantic. Overall I have to give this entree 4/5. The guacamole deserves a 5, however , as it was very fresh and well made. Definitely recommend this joint if you're into Mexican. Just as an aside if you drive through Blaine (just up the road) avoid Paseo Del Norte. Happy eating everybody. read more

We were passing through on our way to Vancouver, BC and tried this place for the first time. The food and service was exceptional. Reasonable and huge portions. Mi Mexico was my long-standing favorite Mexican Restaurant in Whatcom County. After last night, I cut it to three stars account the tastelessness of the food. My meal was the #23 large combo - enchilada, chile relleno and tamale. Greasy ground beef in an enchilada? I don't think so. The jacket on the relleno was thick and didn't contribute much to the taste of the item. For that matter, the green chile didn't have much taste, either. The tamale? Again, the corn masa was made with fine ground corn, and again, lacked a robust corn masa taste. The shredded pork was dry, although the masa was nicely moist. The high point of the meal was the chips and salsa, and that isn't enough. read more

Up until tonight, I would have given the place 4 stars. I'm a bit of a stickler for Mexican food and if there's one thing Whatcom county is missing, it's good Chinese. And next to that, it's good mexican. But I was pleasantly surprised when we went here the first few times. The service was always friendly, our food always arrived quickly and we enjoyed our meals tremendously. Unfortunately, tonight changed my opinion of the place. My daughters have severe food allergies. As I said, we've eaten here before, so we know what's safe and how to order. My daughters proudly gave their orders, the waiter double checked with us, we stressed the dairy allergy (as we always do) and he repeated it back to us. The food arrived, my daughter mixed up everything on her plate as she always does, started eating and said "Daddy? I think there's cheese on my plate." Lucky she caught it. You could barely see it mixed in with all the chicken but once we started poking around, we found quite a bit more. We sent it back, and they replaced both her meal and my younger daughter's meal since we weren't sure whether hers also had cheese on it and that was great. The problem came when my husband went to speak with the management about it. Food allergies can be deadly. For my children, they are literally life-threatening. They are as big of a concern for the people who have them as salmonella or other food poisoning are to the general public. It's not something you mess around with and as a restaurant, it's something you need to be pretty darn serious about. We've occasionally run into this before. Typically something is said to the manager and the manager speaks immediately with the kitchen staff about the problem, along with a profuse apology to us. I expect the preceding, at a minimum, when the kitchen inadvertently attempts to poison my children with foods their bodies will violently reject. The manager's response tonight was "It was busy tonight, amigo." Busy is an excuse for slow food and lousy service, not a potentially life threatening mistake. I know that I don't know what goes on after a restaurant I've eaten at previously has contaminated my daughter's food with an allergen. I like to think that the kitchen staff is re-trained on allergy safety. I like to think the person responsible is spoken to about the problem. At a minimum, I have always had the managers at least indicate to US that they view the contamination as seriously as we do and reassure us that it won't happen again and it is still safe to bring my children into their restaurants. In this case, the manager didn't see nearly making my 7 year old violently sick as a problem worthy of an apology. He didn't even seem to see it as a problem, just as something that should be expected when there is a full house. And, in spite of the fact that I really do generally enjoy the food at this place, I can't risk my daughters' safety on a place that dismisses a serious lapse in the kitchen as being due to high volume and not warranting an apology and some form of reassurance that we won't encounter the same again when we go back. For that reason, I'm giving this one star and we will not be eating here for the foreseeable future. If you have food allergies, I urge you to be very careful about what you put in your mouth at this restaurant as the staff do not seem to take very seriously the threat they pose to individuals who have them. read more

Not going to tote this places food as being anything to out of the norm but i love the quantity, quality, and the speed i get the food for the price. The service is terrible. The place was not very busy around lunch time and there were 4 of us eating. We ordered and there were only 3 sets of silverware. When I asked for another I sat there with my food in front of me waiting until I had to ask a busser for some. While eating no one came to ask how the food was or if we needed anything. Then I also didn't have a cup for water and asked for one and never got one. Then once we finished our meal we sat for 10 minutes waiting for the check then once we did pay we waited another 15 minutes for our change. The food was great but the service was just horrible for not being very busy. read more

Terrible. If your looking for in-authentic american-mexican then maybe. Bland-bland-bland. The sauces are either canned or watered down to 'stretch it' and then thickened with starch. I have never met a mole or a chipotle that I didn't like until I ordered it from Mi Mexico. read more

Food is very bland. Service was atrocious, really bad. Both of us had chicken fajitas. We had to ask for enough salsa, got a tiny bowl. Begged for more...15 minutes went by before we finally got another tiny bowl as they made it clear we were really an annoyance for them (their bowls of salsa are the smallest I have ever been served in a Mexican restaurant). We were completely ignored. Drinks were not refilled. There were not enough tortillas for the chicken fajitas (three tiny little corn tortillas each), when we asked for more, we were told we would have to pay for more. Something like $2.50 for three more tiny corn tortillas. We paid. The chicken fajitas were overcooked (chicken was dried out and slightly burned), and very unimaginative and bland (which is why we wanted more salsa). This is supposed to be a class act (at least, they think it is). Taco Del Mar has much better Mexican food, and even though you have to stand there and wait while they assemble your food, the service nonetheless is better, the staff more attentive and friendly, and they DON'T make you beg for salsa. In Southern California, where you can get decent Mexican food, this place would fold up within three months. read more

My wife and I are Seniors...we stopped in at the Mi Mexico for dinner. We were treated very shabbily. We were seated in a booth and the hostess after plunking our menus on the table walked off without asking for our drinks. A waiter walked up to our table, took a look at us, and walked away. I guess we didn't appeal to him. No one came around until my wife stopped a waitress walking pass and asked for coffee and ice water. Finally, a waitress came by and took out order. The food though served hot was less than mediocre. I had chicken enchilidas. the meat was stringy and tough. the tortillas even with sauce were dry. and the refried beans runny. I suppose we are spoiled when it comes to Mexican food. We lived in Texas and New Mexico over twenty years. And, have had the best in Mexican cuisine on both sides of the border. Prompt and courteous service has always been a must for me. I did not appreciate how we were treated and certainly plan never to return here or recommend it to anyone read more
