Finally made it here for happy hour! There's a street sign with all the deals on it and a lovely patio for the summer. Happy hour is only at the bar or patio. I asked at the bar if I could sit at a table and still get the deals which they allowed; they were confused when we ordered but still let us have the happy hour deals. I got three tacos - shrimp, fish and quesabirria. There were only 2 shrimp on the taco but for $3 it was fine (probably could have gone for another taco!) The drink specials were also solid and the house marg, chips and salsa were all great! I'll be back for sure! read more

While hanging out, we couldn't help but notice how long some things took. I stepped inside to use the bathroom, assuming that it was full in there... and it actually wasn't -- maybe half full? Came in on a Saturday night for dinner with family and was surprised to see that they weren't packed... Reason I say that is the food was AMAZING! Seriously, some of the best Mexican eats I've had in a very long time! They food they make and serve here isn't the typical Mexican stuff you get from many locals, neighborhood joints that cater to the typical American... the food here would 100% be appealing to everyone, including the bland, typical American... but it's also unique in style, preparation, and flavor! Their ceviche was incredibly fresh and tasty. The basic chips and salsa they provide when being seated consists of a nice, smokey red salsa as well as a spicy verde which was loaded with heat and flavor. Their queso fundido was incredible and came out bubbling and piping hot! The best thing was their Solis Molcajate was OUTSTANDING! It's a protein buffet served in a mortar (Molcajete) along with some other garnishes, cactus and onions and cheese and it's truly incredible! It comes with sides and their most amazing homemade corn tortillas too. A few of us shared this and it was definitely enough for 3 - 4 people! Overall, we tried many items on the menu and all were great! Highly recommend stopping in for great Mexican eats! I met a small group of friends at Mezcalero on Cinco de Mayo for their Sunday celebration and food drink deals. The restaurant wasn't particularly crowded so we grabbed a seat on the outside patio which had about 6-8 tables for parties for 4+. We were there for tacos, margaritas, and a good time. The tacos were really great - we tried the carne asada and the shrimp. Both were really fresh, flavorful, and well made. For the special, they were only $3.50 which felt like a good deal. Definitely happy with our choice of bites. The margs were good too, at $7 each. They had a few different flavors but of course I stuck with the lime. I like my margs a bit tart and this hit all the right notes. Unfortunately, the food and drink service throughout the afternoon was soooo slow. There weren't many guests sitting outside with us and the inside didn't seem overly crowded either but the wait times for our food and drink were really puzzling. Our three margaritas came out 1 at a time over the course of 10ish minutes. Then our small order of 3-4 tacos took 30+ minutes to hit the table. We really enjoyed the food and drink and would've ordered more but were afraid of how long it would take to get another round. We decided to close out our tab and head to another spot. I ordered the beef lengua burrito for delivery and received it on-time and still warm. I liked that cost was very reasonable, the portion size was good, they left the sour cream on the side, and the burrito had good heat. Additionally, I appreciated that the burrito came with chips, salsas on the side, and a good amount of well-cooked lengua. However, the burrito was way too salty, overwhelming most of the other flavors, Additionally, the Mexican rice and beans needed to be seasoned better, and the tortillas were too doughy. I previously went to the Mezcalero on Rt 1 and wasnt terribly impressed. In a random comversation someone was saying to try the place, I gave my expdrience, and he recommended the DC location. Not one to discard a good recommendation, I put it on my list and finally went. Parking at this location isn't great. But if you can find a spot its worth checking out. I decided to break from my typical Al pastor and birria tacos to try something different and got the chicken mole. The mole was far better than I expected it to be. Part smoky, part sweet, all good. I was recommended by a colleague to try Mezcalero and I definitely enjoyed my visit. I visited on a Friday night, no reservation, and I was seated quickly. It had a decent number of people but wasn't super packed. The place is right on 14th street, it's pretty small but lively. The server was very kind and attentive. I loved the salsa verse that came with the complimentary chips and salsa. I got the tacos de mole which came with yellow rice and black beans, my partner got the enchiladas de mole which came with yellow rice and refried pinto beans. I loved my meal and my plate was definitely clean when I was finished with it! I love that the tacos come on corn tortillas with cilantro and onion because that is closest to authentic tacos. My partner enjoyed their meal as well! I got the horchata which I really liked, my partner who is Mexican didn't like it as much. I'd rate them closer to 3.5, but I just moved to the neighborhood and walked by here the other night. I wanted to check them out, so I came back last night for dinner. It's seat yourself seating, so I sat outside which was a nice view for people watching. They have a pretty solid menu with an array of options although, to me, their entrees seemed to be on the pricey side. I ordered the Maracuya, a passion fruit cocktail with rum in it and that was pretty good. They had complimentary tortilla chips with guacamole and red salsa. I liked the chips. Those were pretty good. For my main course, I did three different tacos--carnitas, carne asada, and the fish taco. I feel the tacos are authentic--they were very simple without all the extra stuff. It was the protein, some onions and cilantro. They had red radishes and cucumbers as garnishes on the side. This is how the tacos were in Mexico when I visited years ago. They were very good. Where they could improve is with service. The servers were nice enough, but it took way too long to get my check. The man who was serving me either left or went on break after I asked for my check so I had to ask someone else. That was a little annoying, but other than that, it was pretty good food. This place has a good size menu and with pictures! Which I feel like all restaurants should have bc it sure does help. The staff was super nice and the place is a decent size with indoor and outdoor dining. The neighborhood is a tad bit sketchy though, but I guess thats a give and take. Overall the food was good! Here's what we ordered: 1) strawberry & mango Agua Frescas & Horchata- the size of these drinks are large! Also super refreshing and not too sweet. 2) Guacamole & chip- they know that they are doing with the flavors. It was bomb!!!! 3) Queso Fundido- it comes with what taste like homemade tortilla and all I can say is, "where has this been all my life!?" This combo was amazing! My sisters and I love this place and always enjoy the food. An exception is the guacamole, which I had today and realized it's not that bad! So, maybe next time. But I bring my family here as well and my husband likes fajitas so we came in Father's day evening to an EMPTY restaurant and the worst service I've ever had! I understand that you're disappointed that this is a table with 4 kids - but guess what: YOU DON'T HAVE A KID'S MENU ANYWAY! We are ordering the same food. We were ignored. The waiter brought ONE TINY basket of chips 5 minutes before our food came out. He never refilled our waters. He forgot my Horchata and it took 20 minutes to run my husband's lemonade (and no, they didn't come at the same time). He didn't bring the extra plate to split my youngest sons' entrees, and he absolutely did not check on us AT ALL. We flagged down other servers all evening for water, extra salsa, etc... and forewent dessert because he just refused to come back to our table. The food is always good, but I do not want to be in this guy's section. There is a "service charge" on the bill thats 18%, I'm assuming it's gratuity; and, for the first time, it was the ONLY tip I left. Whew, this dude doesn't need to be in service. He's RUDE, condescending - my husband speaks spanish but this dude refuses to speak to him in spanish- and absolutely ridiculously slow. We did not enjoy our time tonight. The kicker was my husband's entree. The fajitas were really poorly made today: the chicken was cut 2" wide and the bellpeppers were too! Those bellpeppers looked like quarters! After waiting 10 minutes for him to come back, we gave up on ordering the flan (which is so good -_-) and went home. Hopefully it will be better next time. Sigh. read more

Its a hidden gem outside the main DC most visited area. The chips & salsa, enchilladas, tacos and drinks. All of them tasted incredible. You could tell everything is made fresh. For tacos we ordered the chorizo, al pastor, and carnitas tacos all of which were super tasty, we couldn't pick a favorite between the three because they were all so good. This restaurant serves free chips and salsa (both salsa verde and salsa roja). The salsas were decent and was really good poured on top of the tacos. The chips were pretty stale. All of the tacos are $4 and up and the cocktails were all around $14. Overall a little pricey but I would definitely come back for happy hour in which it seems like they have better deals. This is the best Mexican restaurant in town if you're looking for great food. Pre-pandemic they were pretty busy (I don't think they take reservations) but we were usually able to get a seat, I think it's calmed down a bit now that they have an extended outdoor eating area. If there is a wait, we usually just swing by one of the nearby bars. I don't think they deliver, otherwise I'd be ordering from them everyday. They have a pretty extensive menu, which I haven't gotten to trying everything since I can't get past their great sopes, gorditas, and enchilladas. All of which I recommend. Their fajitas are great too, especially if you're looking for something on the lighter/healthier side. I wish they offered more than just the little (complimentary) cup of chips, but their salsa options are better than most and make up for it. read more

Amazing authentic Mexican food in Columbia heights. Around dinner time on the weekend it's super packed so be prepared for about a 45 min wait if you don't make a reservation! They bring chips and salsa to start and a trio of salsa which was great. For my meal I got the street tacos - carnita, pastor, and campechano - and campechano was my favorite since it had chorizo and steak. I like classic street tacos and the flavoring on each was on point. My friend also got the tres leches for dessert and said it was one of the best she's had. I haven't tried many tres leches but this one was definitely delicious! We also got a pitcher of mezcal margaritas and I'm usually a hit or miss with mezcal but these were great and not too overpowering with the smokiness. My friend and I came here for dinner. What I can say is they have good drinks, decent food, and the staff are a bit aloof to your table when you sit outside. If you can look past that, then you're alright. Bathrooms are inside near the register towards the back. They were clean. With my food, I got the ceviche. It was a bit spicy, but worth trying. It was fresh and that is what I needed. I miss having that where I live as I live closer inland in Nashville. I finally went to Mezcalero this past November after having gone by it for years (I typically go a couple doors down to Habanero if I'm craving Mexican). It was a bit too cold to sit outside so we opted to sit inside. It was a Monday and wasn't too crowded and we were able to sit apart from other patrons. The first thing I noticed was the smell. They had some kind of air freshener that was so overwhelming it starting to affect my breathing after a while. It also gave me a headache. I'm not sure why you'd want such a strong scent for a restaurant where smell is part of taste! Their chips and salsa were a great start to the meal, and loved the different options of salsas. I opted to get something a little different and got the torta de milanesa de pollo, and it was so good. It's a large sandwich so it's incredibly filling. My partner got three tacos (including lengua) and was really satisfied with them. The server was also very friendly and made sure we had water when we needed it. We tried the tacos dorados (minus the sour cream), the carne asada and pastor tacos and a carnitas gordita. The tacos dorados were nice and crispy. We had two beef and two chicken. I normally prefer the beef but this time the chicken won. The chicken was all white meat and super juicy. The guacamole on top and the iceberg lettuce with tomatoes on the bottom are a great accompaniment between bites. The tacos (not pictured) were good but the Gordita beat both on flavor. We'll definitely be back to try his other specialties (I.e., chilaquiles, pambazo torta). If you're looking for a parking spot around here - good luck! Mezcalero is really good. Delicious food, large portions, tasty strong margaritas, and good service. I've tried the tacos, nachos, tortas, and quesadillas and I can't think of one thing I haven't liked. Surprisingly, I actually love the vegetarian options more than the meat options (although the meat dishes are still good). The spinach and mushroom quesadilla is amazing, probably the best quesadilla I've ever had. The quesadilla is packed full of spinach, mushrooms, cheese, and corn and is extremely flavorful. It's also made with a corn tortilla. I also really like the nachos. I've had both the chicken nachos and veggie nachos, and while the chicken nachos are delicious, the veggie nachos can't be beat. The veggie nachos are a tower of chips, beans, cheese, and every veggie in the house (including guacamole). Tacos are small but cheap; most tacos are $3 or less. My favorite tacos are the fried fish and the salmon taco. The drinks are solid too. And during happy hour from 3 - 7, you can get both a tequila margarita and mezcal margarita for only $6. Both are very good but in a place with mezcal in the name, you should definitely get the mezcal margarita. The cucumber margarita has to be my fav. Also, you can make any drink on the menu a "mocktail" (no alcohol) for only $6. The cucumber margarita mocktail tasted just like the real thing. There's also no judgment ordering a mocktail. Service is always great when I come, even though this place is always packed. Happy hour is only in the small bar area (about 6 bar stools and 3 high tops) and by 5:00 it's full. By 5:00, most of the restaurant is actually full and by 6:00 the usually a line of people waiting. read more
