The food here was good and the establishment was clean, but as (obvious) tourists, my family had an overall sketchy and frustrating experience.
For starters, we were led straight to a dinky indoors area towards the back of the restaurant, past all the outdoor diners. Apparently people seated in this indoor area were actually considered to be in a different restaurant that was NOT Mextreme, but actually some wannabe Italian seafood place with the same staff yet different menus. We asked the man who seated us for the Mextreme menus as well, and had to sit through him trying to convince us to order from the fairly limited wannabe Italian menu. We insisted on the Mextreme menu, and he left to fetch one, but never returned.
We finally got the menu from our waiter, who we immediately showed the referral card we had received from a tourist info booth (the man there said it would get us free drinks) and the 15% off our meal total as promised by a Yelp check in. Apparently the referral card was actually only for a free appetizer, but whatever, fine. The appetizer came before the waiter informed us that we could only use one of the special offers--of course we chose the 15% off and informed him accordingly--but we were fine with paying an extra hundred pesos for the mystery appetizer, which was small but decent.
We each ordered a drink, some guac, a large shrimp cocktail, a seafood grill for two. Drinks took a while to come--the mojitos were good (albeit very sweet) but the Mai Tai was disgustingly watered down and tasted like nothing. The sauce for the chips that accompany most Mexican restaurant meals came only after a long while, and without the chips themselves... the chips ended up coming at the same time as our entree, and the guac (supposed to be an appetizer?) came after with the shrimp cocktail. The seafood itself was great, with an assortment of rice, pico, guac, potato, miscellaneous veggies, salmon, shrimp, scallop, mahi mahi, and clams/muscles--definitely more than enough for two, and very adequate for three. Guac was mediocre to disappointing, and I thought the shrimp cocktail was disgusting, though that may just be a personal preference. We cleared the food at a healthy and happy pace, and asked for the check afterwards, which was when the real trouble began.
It took us HALF AN HOUR to get our first check, at least, and probably an addition ten minutes to get the CORRECT check. Three other tables in our area asked for their checks, paid, and left before we even saw our first one. At first, we thought the holdup was due to the 15% coupon, which our waiter had already seen and cleared with a supervisor. But when he waiter arrived with a confusing smattering of four or five checks, the total, scrawled on the back of a scrap of paper, was nothing near what I calculated it to be with the menu's prices. We first asked if he had calculated in the 15% off--he paused and said he hadn't, ran off with the checks, and brought back another supervisor, who said the 15% was valid. Again. Our waiter promptly tore off to get the credit card scanner (which they bring to the table and swipe in front of you, that was nice), and I had to lunge for him and call after him to even get a hold of the itemized breakdown for longer than 10 seconds. I asked how much he charged for the not-complimentary appetizer, and he quickly pointed to some random item on the composite check and then said "it's free, it's free" before trying to whip away the checks again. One, inconsistent with what he said earlier, but great, not-complimentary appetizer is now complimentary, great. Two, it wasn't even our check, which I pointed out to the waiter who was obviously in a hurry to rip us off. I understand the perils of dining in a tourist-heavy area while obviously being a tourist but COME. ON. That is just some seriously shady business. Our waiter gave us a pretty insincere "oh." And ran to get it fixed once more. It came back to a total of more than 200 pesos less, including what he claimed was a 15% service charge. At this point, it was approximately the correct price, and we had spent more than half our time at the restaurant either waiting or wrestling with our check, so we just paid it and left. What a headache and good riddance. My advice to tourists is to either avoid this place altogether or be prepared to keep a close eye on things and stand your ground if it comes to it. read more
