Stopped in for lunch, menu had some depth, but mostly classical Mexican dishes with lots of customization options and most importantly lots of veggie and low carb options. I went with the grilled shrimp salad, and it was the right size with good quality.

Lunch with a friend. It was early so we were sat right away. Our server also made our margaritas, he was amiable and quick. The decor felt right at home. The barrel margaritas are second only to Cancun here in Cedar Rapids. The chips and salsa were good, the spice level on the salsa sneaks up on you after a while. Good stuff though. The Chori-Queso is chorizo and chile con queso together. Warm gooey goodness with your chips. The chicken molé is the best I've had in Cedar Rapids. Slightly sweeter yet a touch more bitter than other places. The rice was on point. You get guacamole, pico, jalapeños and lettuce on the side with corn/flour tortillas. No beans (mild disappointment). They have a lunch menu if you'd like, we did not. 5/5 will definitely return.

Absolutely awesome Mexican food. Fast service with the drinks and appetizers. Food menu was plentiful. Main course took almost 30 minutes to come out. Food tasted great. Atmosphere was clean and friendly.

This is an interesting new place, very nicely decorated with a green feeling. The margaritas were decent. This place just opened so they were not offering any drink or food specials just yet. The staff were friendly and attentive not overly pushy as we sat drinking as opposed to ordering food. We will come back another time to try the food, from what we smelled it seamed good.

Great food! Have been wanting to try it for a while but never get to that side of town. The servers were very friendly, the place was swamped (it was Mother's Day). The inside was decorated pretty cool. The chips that come out beforehand are really good! So, I've hadn't yet tried Quesabirria Tacos so I decided to go for it and they were delicious! Definitely recommend! I had also had a side bowl of the Elotes corn. Spicy, but good. You could tell it was off the cob because some of the cob silk was still in it. My son had the Chorripollo, and I snagged a piece of the chicken and it was awesome! My husband ordered the ground beef chimichangas and he said they were pretty good. Overall, I would absolutely recommend!

I haven't had a bad experience yet. Service is great, staff are friendly, it's clean, and the menu has something for everyone. I rarely rate 5 stars, but I can't find a negative! This time I got pork mole and it came out beautiful and so much food. Very flavorful mole. If you don't like mole or are a simple eater I would not recommend because it is rich and has a lot of depth of flavor. However, if you want to try something new - do it! It's much more flavorful than I've experienced with other restaurants. He got the Choripollo which was also excellent. They do have a wait sometimes, so plan ahead. $4.75 house mix margs during happy hour. Otherwise the margs are delicious, but in the $10-$14 range. They also do taco Tuesday, but I have not been there yet for that. Highly recommend.

Out of the listed 30 top Mexican restaurants reviewed in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding area, I've eaten at over half over the years. Having eaten at Mextizo recently, it quickly has become my number one and favorite. The owner of Mextizo is amazing and great to talk to. The food and service are exceptional. Our wonderful waiter recommended the Saturno Margarita, which turned out to be the best-balanced Margarita I've ever had. My wife enjoyed some incredible enchiladas, while our son had a kid's quesadilla with fries and a very tasty lemonade. I was unsure what to order and mentioned to the waiter that I usually get fajitas at Mexican restaurants, as I've been spoiled by good Mexican food on a few trips to places like San Antonio. Upon hearing this, the waiter explained that the owner is from Mexico City and many of the recipes are based on his experiences there. He recommended I try the "Street Quesadillas," which are made with handmade corn tortillas and then fried--a method I'd never tried before. Even though I'm not usually a fan of corn tortillas, the waiter promised that if I didn't like them, he would remove them from the bill and bring me something else. He only needed to know which meats I wanted to try, and I could sample different types. When the Street Quesadillas arrived, they looked nothing like the flour quesadillas with melted cheese I've come to expect. However, from the first bite, I was hooked. These delightful treats were amazing and huge--I ended up taking half the meal home, and they warmed up well in the air fryer. Overall, I give Mextizo top marks for authenticity, service, and taste. One word of advice: bring people you actually want to talk with, because they cook real food here, not just warmed-up dishes like you get at some modern-day restaurants. It takes a bit longer, but it's worth the wait.

We arrived and ordered the fajitas for two from looking at the online menu. Don't know if this has been changed since but we were charged a few dollars more than the price on the online menu. We didn't bring it up but just be aware. Fajitas were pretty middle of the road, some bits were charred. Not worth the $33 dollars we paid. Drinks were good, the service was alright(we sat at the bar). We liked the ambiance and decor. Also would recommend to check out the 8 health code violations before coming here. read more

the only good thing i have to say about this is their servers and wait staff are incredible, i have nothing cruel to say towards them. i want to give the kitchen the benefit of the doubt, because we showed up just after a rush-- however, my california burritos rice was pretty dry and hard to swallow, the potatoes inside tasted like old mcdonalds french fries. my partners carne asada was also unseasoned, and had so much fatty pieces it was nearly 2/3s of each piece of steak. the restaurant itself was clean and beautifully painted. read more

Overhyped. The service was slow. Authentic margaritas should not include orange juice as an ingredient. The ambiance was poor. It was very loud as the design of the seating areas did not lend itself to any amount of sound absorption. The refried beans were the worst we've ever had. If you used soapy dishwasher to soak the beans and then turned them into refried beans, that was the exact flavor. The rest of the food was lackluster. We ordered tacos al pastor which were flavorless unless soaked in lime juice. For the price point we expected more. I agree with others the decor is nice but beyond that it really falls flat in flavors, ambiance, and service. read more

This by far is my ABSOLUTE favorite and my go to for Mexican food in Cedar Rapids!! I LOVE ME SOME MEXTIZO!! The homemade chips, the salsa, mmmmmhmmm! I really love their chicken street nachos, their chicken is fire! I love their tacos, and have tried multiple dishes. My go to is usually fajitas, but I haven't tried theirs yet. The prices to me are great and the service is super as well! My only complaints are I'm not a fan of their refried beans and the noise level is sometimes deafening. But overall...chefs kiss! read more

The overall experience was brought down by the fact we waited over an hour for a table , but they do haver a pager system to call you when your table is ready, after that everything was spot on . The food was exceptional and the service stellar. The ambiance was very loud, but the decor was very well done . I would go back again, just not during dinner rush on a Friday night of one of the warmest January days I can remember . I would also request a table away from the bar area .next time. read more

I rarely leave reviews, but I have to in this case. I love Mexican food and have been at 10 places in Cedar Rapids in the last year. This place is the best of all of them. The chicken/beef fajitas were better any other place I've eaten in eastern Iowa. Three of our party had shredded chicken, chicken and ground beef chimis. All agreed they were the best they have had. The service was attentive and we never had an empty glass. The waiter took our orders, and repeated them back by memory. After the food was served he checked back with us a couple times to be sure everything was all right. The table was clean, which can be unusual for a Mexican restaurant. The wall art was fun, but I thought, well done. My wife and I will surely be returning. read more

We had our first visit to Mextizo Mexican Restaurant for lunch and can definitely see why it's such a popular spot! From the moment we walked in, the lively and vibrant ambiance set the tone for a great experience. The tortilla chips were fresh and crisp, and paired perfectly with their homemade salsa and guacamole--both packed with bold, authentic flavor. We also ordered the queso birria tacos, which were solid: cheesy, juicy, and satisfying with that craveable consommé for dipping. Service was fast, attentive, and friendly without feeling rushed--something we always appreciate during a busy lunch hour. All in all, Mextizo delivered on flavor, atmosphere, and hospitality. Really, driving the distance is more than worth it. Yesterday, I happened to be on the right side of town and went back to Eva's. It's a small building but that's one of the things I like the most about it. It's comfortable and friendly. The server's name was Marili and she was great. She anticipated when I needed anything and never made me feel like I was asking too much. There was a high school(?) aged kid that was very attentive and courteous and helped the servers fill drinks, take plates, and check up on tables. I ended up tipping him as well because he definitely deserved it. The owner was a consistent presence, also making sure everyone was happy and everything was in order. This is a small, family owned business and it definitely feels like it by the way they treat and know their customers. If that wasn't enough of a reason to support this place, the food was probably the best Mexican food I've had. As soon as I sat down, I ordered a cherry coke and a small queso to go with the chips. The chips were thick (but not overly so) and had a really good crunch to them, and the queso was definitely worth the buy. Their menu is very extensive and there are so many different dishes that I haven't seen at other restaurants. I don't usually get appetizers at Mexican restaurants for some reason, but I wanted to try something new. To start, I ordered the Mini Chimis (Two fried chimis stuffed with chicken, beans, and cheese and served with a homemade dressing.) The dressing was something like a coleslaw, sweet and tangy, and I could have probably drank the stuff it was so good. The chimis were cut in half and served over a shredded lettuce bed and were cooked perfectly. had to move the plate to the back of the table so I would not just eat all of it right then and there and not be able to eat any of the chicken fajitas I had ordered for an entree. The chicken fajitas came out sizzling and had more and better flavor than other fajitas I've had. The tortillas were so fluffy and tasty as well I actually ordered another side of them to go! The fajitas are served with the usual rice, beans, and lettuce mix and topped with a fresh homemade guacamole. When the owner stopped by, I asked him if they made the guacamole in house and he said that yes, they actually made everything fresh there. You can definitely taste the quality and care put into everything. At the end, the total was $42.80, and I will still probably get 4-5 more meals out of the leftovers because of the generous amount they serve. This is the kind of place that once you go once, you'll probably have a hard time staying away from so keep that in mind before you make that decision. I couldn't think of one bad thing to say even if I wanted to. 10/10

We didn't have an issue with the bill other than the fact that after I told you all the stuff she did and how she ignored us you made excuses for her and dismissed us. Then I said I refuse to pay the bill and you told me to leave. We could have left right then and there but we agreed to pay half off because the other server was kind to us. Not you. Not our original waitress but the others that flagged her down for us multiple times. Say what you will, it isn't my business or reputation that's going to take a hit for your shoddy service.

For my trip to Don Miguel, I took my oldest (14). She ordered a burrito with only chicken and cheese. I don't know what I ordered. Their menu board had a section called something like "chef's specialty." The menu board had a picture, the name of whatever the dish was, and the choices of meats. I ordered that chef's specialty with carne asada. The best way I can describe it is if you rolled out dough into incredibly thin ovals, then dropped them into a pan of something like Crisco for just long enough to get them to puff up a little, then put them on a plate with carne asada on top. A lot of times, when you're ordering something with steak cut into small pieces, you can get a lot of gristle, but I didn't notice that. It seemed like they either used better quality meat than a lot of places, or did a better job butchering it. I would highly recommend this meal. I'll try to remember to update this review with the actual name of the meal next time I go. I'm not sure of the best way to tell you about my daughter's burrito, which I ended up finishing, because it was pretty massive. I guess I'll start by saying that my daughter said it was the best burrito she has ever had. In my opinion, asking for a burrito with only chicken and cheese is essentially asking for a bland burrito. So, I don't feel like I can give a great assessment of how good their burritos are, but the kid who likes chicken and cheese burritos really liked the chicken and cheese burrito at Don Miguel. We went on a Saturday, and the restaurant was doing a very good business. There were a handful of open tables, but all of them except one were large tables. As a party of two, I didn't want to occupy a large table at a busy time. The one open smaller booth hadn't been bussed yet. I'm probably giving more detail than I need to, but I don't want to just say that my table hadn't been bussed before I sat down, and make it sound like the workers weren't doing their job. So, I want to make it clear that I chose an unbussed table when bussed tables were available. The reason it's relevant that I chose an unbussed table is that my table had a squeeze bottle of red salsa, and a squeeze bottle of green salsa. I did not notice squeeze bottles on any of the other tables, which makes me think these bottles are something that you ask for if you want them. The reasonI think that's worth mentioning is that the salsa verde was incredibly mild, but the regular salsa (is "red" in Spanish "roja"?) was spicier than any salsa I have ever had as the standard salsa at a restaurant. I've had spicier salsas when I specifically bought hot salsas in grocery stores. So, I'm not saying this salsa was unimaginably spicy. I'm just saying that I'd bet they have squeeze bottles of mild, medium, and spicy; and whoever sat at the table probably asked for spicy. If you ask for salsa and there's only one kind of red salsa though, I would be prepared for it to have a nice kick. The staff seemed very nice, as far as I could tell. If the fact that I'm not sure how to say "red" in Spanish didn't already give this away, English is my only language, and I don't feel like I speak that language well enough to get cocky and try to learn a second language. It seemed like most of the staff at Don Miguel also spoke one language. It wasn't a problem, though. When I tried to give my daughter's special order, the woman just called over another guy who kindly took my order in English. (I've tried my best to learn a few words in Spanish for my next visit, and I understand that saying something like "Uno burrito solamente pollo y queso, por favor. No frijoles, no lechuga, por favor." should do the trick.) I also had horchata. I actually hate horchata. I normally drink iced tea, but they didn't have iced tea. I try not to drink soda. So, I asked the gentleman if they had agua fresca. The gentleman who was taking my order said "horchata?" and seemed to read on my face that horchata wasn't what I wanted. (It's the only agua fresca I have had that I didn't like.) When he saw my face, he pivoted to asking if I wanted ice water. I was about to say yes when I realized that I'm pretty sure "agua fresca" translates to "fresh water," and that this guy may have been assuming I thought "agua fresca" was the way to ask for ice water. I may be stupid, but the Dunning-Kruger Effect is strong with me. So, I don't want people thinking I'm stupid. As a result, I proudly said "You know what? I think I will have a horchata." It was like a quart of horchata. So, if you like horchata, that would probably be a pleasant surprise for you. By the way, the prices at Don Miguel were fantastic. Obviously inflation has had an effect on us all, but the folks at Don Miguel seem to be doing a good job of handling it. I highly recommend!
