    Chicken fajita wrap
    Jon B.

Well , I don't know the Mexican food scene in Iowa but I was impressed by La Cantina ( much better than 3 stars). Came here for dinner without a clue. The service was very good, helpful and swift . I was greeted by a smile , a basket of chips and a very nice selection of draft beers ( they have all of the Mexican favorites). So in addition to the chips and homemade salsa I opted for the queso dip as well . The server recommended a chicken fajita wrap so I took her advice. Delicious . In sum , I couldn't ask for more - the menu is huge so plenty of options

    Aguachile

I've frequented this restaurant quite a few times. Each time has been pleasant, with good service and decent food. A week ago we decided to go with a group of friends- their first time visiting. Me and my friend decided to get a dish called "aguachile", mind you I've had this dish before (not here) and it's a very delicious and refreshing meal. First off, it took a long time for us to get our orders in. Then it took about 40 min to get our meals. They brought out 4/6 meals, me and my friend were still waiting on ours. While everyone is already eating and finishing up their meals they finally bring ours out. They said it was bc our dish took some artistry....not sure what they meant as I only saw a sliced avocado on top and slices of cucumber on the side of the dish. I was genuinely confused when I saw the dish as it looked nothing like aguachile. This was essentially shrimp swimming in mango puree with bits of mango and pineapple in it. Not really a typical aguachile dish. The cucumbers weren't even IN the dish, they were used as a garnish or as a decorative piece.. typical aguachile dish has diced cucumbers in it. The dish was so spicy we could hardly eat it. As my friend put it, this tasted like a spicy mango shrimp smoothie. We left it all. We just ate the avocado that was on top. If this dish wasn't $20 I would've let it go. But that was $20 too much for spicy shrimp smoothie. I did call the restaurant 2 days later to give them my experience and said someone would call me that day or the next. Unfortunately no one did. I do want to say my husbands dish was fine and no complaints whatsoever, he enjoyed his meal very much. I just wish someone would have addressed this issue so I didn't feel like I had to write this review.

Really, driving the distance is more than worth it. Yesterday, I happened to be on the right side of town and went back to Eva's. It's a small building but that's one of the things I like the most about it. It's comfortable and friendly. The server's name was Marili and she was great. She anticipated when I needed anything and never made me feel like I was asking too much. There was a high school(?) aged kid that was very attentive and courteous and helped the servers fill drinks, take plates, and check up on tables. I ended up tipping him as well because he definitely deserved it. The owner was a consistent presence, also making sure everyone was happy and everything was in order. This is a small, family owned business and it definitely feels like it by the way they treat and know their customers. If that wasn't enough of a reason to support this place, the food was probably the best Mexican food I've had. As soon as I sat down, I ordered a cherry coke and a small queso to go with the chips. The chips were thick (but not overly so) and had a really good crunch to them, and the queso was definitely worth the buy. Their menu is very extensive and there are so many different dishes that I haven't seen at other restaurants. I don't usually get appetizers at Mexican restaurants for some reason, but I wanted to try something new. To start, I ordered the Mini Chimis (Two fried chimis stuffed with chicken, beans, and cheese and served with a homemade dressing.) The dressing was something like a coleslaw, sweet and tangy, and I could have probably drank the stuff it was so good. The chimis were cut in half and served over a shredded lettuce bed and were cooked perfectly. had to move the plate to the back of the table so I would not just eat all of it right then and there and not be able to eat any of the chicken fajitas I had ordered for an entree. The chicken fajitas came out sizzling and had more and better flavor than other fajitas I've had. The tortillas were so fluffy and tasty as well I actually ordered another side of them to go! The fajitas are served with the usual rice, beans, and lettuce mix and topped with a fresh homemade guacamole. When the owner stopped by, I asked him if they made the guacamole in house and he said that yes, they actually made everything fresh there. You can definitely taste the quality and care put into everything. At the end, the total was $42.80, and I will still probably get 4-5 more meals out of the leftovers because of the generous amount they serve. This is the kind of place that once you go once, you'll probably have a hard time staying away from so keep that in mind before you make that decision. I couldn't think of one bad thing to say even if I wanted to. 10/10

Yes. Cheese? Also yes. Portion control? Absolutely not. And honestly? Respect. The Birria Tacos (aka post-workout happiness) These tacos are CRISPY. Like audible crunch. Golden, juicy, stuffed with slow-cooked beef that tastes like it's been marinating in flavor since 1997. And the consommé??? You dip it and suddenly you understand why people fall in love too fast. Served with: Mexican rice (carb loading but make it elite) Refried beans with melted cheese (fiber... we're calling it balance) A lime wedge for aesthetic health Would I eat this after leg day? Yes. Would I eat this before leg day? Also yes. The Smothered Burrito (aka the villain arc meal) It comes out sizzling like it's announcing its presence. Completely drowned in melted cheese. Sauce everywhere. Zero shame. You cut into it and it's just layers of juicy meat, sauce, and chaos. This is not a "cute little lunch." This is a "cancel your plans and commit" situation. Foodie Influencer Notes: Portions are HUGE (shareable but do you really want to?) Flavor is bold, rich, and comforting Not watered down, not bland, not pretending to be healthy This is real, messy, satisfying food Gym Girl Verdict: Is it high protein? Yes. Is it high calorie? Also yes. Is life about balance? Absolutely. You can meal prep chicken and rice all week... but sometimes you need birria dipped in consommé while telling yourself "this is for muscle growth." Final Rating: 9/10 - would absolutely earn this on the StairMaster again.

We had a chicken con polo (sp?) and it was good, again not our favorite in the area but still delicious and a generous portion. Staff was pleasant and I believe a manager or owner stopped by to see how we were doing which I felt was a nice touch. Good place to visit but not our regular Taco Tuesday venue.

The restaurant is beautiful and they have a full bar. The menu is small but a great collection of offerings. It's not traditional Mexican but more of a fusion with a lot of Spanish influence. For an entree we tried the bocadillo and Street corn both were excellent. The street corn stole the spotlight as a Mexican. I was impressed with their take on roasted street corn . We had the churros they were good too. The only negative I'd the seats were uncomfortable. They are going for a sleek clean modern astetic. And the place looks great .
