Lunch with a friend. It was early so we were sat right away. Our server also made our margaritas, he was amiable and quick. The decor felt right at home. The barrel margaritas are second only to Cancun here in Cedar Rapids. The chips and salsa were good, the spice level on the salsa sneaks up on you after a while. Good stuff though. The Chori-Queso is chorizo and chile con queso together. Warm gooey goodness with your chips. The chicken molé is the best I've had in Cedar Rapids. Slightly sweeter yet a touch more bitter than other places. The rice was on point. You get guacamole, pico, jalapeños and lettuce on the side with corn/flour tortillas. Met a couple of friends here for dinner while in town. The entrance is a vibe with all the flowers... feels like entering a garden. The decor indoors is also very instagrammable. I just sometimes wonder how quickly will dust mites start falling or if there is a solid cleaning schedule for all the decor. Our sever was sweet, helped us make choices off a very extensive menu. I had the vegan bowl with the vegan chorizo. The food was very flavorful and I had plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day. The complementary chips and salsa also tasted very fresh. The tortillas were fried in house and were definitely not from a bag. All in all, it was a great experience and I will definitely come back and try other items on the menu. read more

This is an interesting new place, very nicely decorated with a green feeling. The margaritas were decent. This place just opened so they were not offering any drink or food specials just yet. This has become our go to taco Tuesday place. The staff is friendly and helpfulful. The placevis clean with cool artwork on the walls. We love the patio when the weather's good. This time I got pork mole and it came out beautiful and so much food. Very flavorful mole. If you don't like mole or are a simple eater I would not recommend because it is rich and has a lot of depth of flavor. However, if you want to try something new - do it! It's much more flavorful than I've experienced with other restaurants. He got the Choripollo which was also excellent. They do have a wait sometimes, so plan ahead. $4.75 house mix margs during happy hour. Otherwise the margs are delicious, but in the $10-$14 range. Great food! Have been wanting to try it for a while but never get to that side of town. The servers were very friendly, the place was swamped (it was Mother's Day). The inside was decorated pretty cool. The chips that come out beforehand are really good! So, I've hadn't yet tried Quesabirria Tacos so I decided to go for it and they were delicious! Definitely recommend! I had also had a side bowl of the Elotes corn. Spicy, but good. You could tell it was off the cob because some of the cob silk was still in it. My son had the Chorripollo, and I snagged a piece of the chicken and it was awesome! My husband ordered the ground beef chimichangas and he said they were pretty good. Out of the listed 30 top Mexican restaurants reviewed in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding area, I've eaten at over half over the years. Having eaten at Mextizo recently, it quickly has become my number one and favorite. The owner of Mextizo is amazing and great to talk to. The food and service are exceptional. Our wonderful waiter recommended the Saturno Margarita, which turned out to be the best-balanced Margarita I've ever had. My wife enjoyed some incredible enchiladas, while our son had a kid's quesadilla with fries and a very tasty lemonade. I was unsure what to order and mentioned to the waiter that I usually get fajitas at Mexican restaurants, as I've been spoiled by good Mexican food on a few trips to places like San Antonio. Upon hearing this, the waiter explained that the owner is from Mexico City and many of the recipes are based on his experiences there. He recommended I try the "Street Quesadillas," which are made with handmade corn tortillas and then fried--a method I'd never tried before. Even though I'm not usually a fan of corn tortillas, the waiter promised that if I didn't like them, he would remove them from the bill and bring me something else. He only needed to know which meats I wanted to try, and I could sample different types. When the Street Quesadillas arrived, they looked nothing like the flour quesadillas with melted cheese I've come to expect. However, from the first bite, I was hooked. These delightful treats were amazing and huge--I ended up taking half the meal home, and they warmed up well in the air fryer. Overall, I give Mextizo top marks for authenticity, service, and taste. One word of advice: bring people you actually want to talk with, because they cook real food here, not just warmed-up dishes like you get at some modern-day restaurants. I love going here! When I have family visiting from out of town they always request going here. Chips and salsa are always fresh and consistently good. Booths, tables , floors always look clean. Service is quick , friendly and helpful! Menu is a good size. Lots to choose from with out being overwhelming. Familiar favorites ( nachos, tacos, quesadillas) and something different if you want to mix things up. The guacamole is amazing. Hands down some of the best I've had. We have been here at least five times and the food is touch and go...however...it's the closest to authentic that we've experienced in Cedar Rapids. The food is fresh, hot, and taste worthy. My only real complaint is their salsa is quite bland-no kick! The ambiance portraits well for the culture it presents-being in the great Midwest. The service is exceptional. EXCELLENT!!! "Mextizo" is a mix of the Spanish words for "mixed" and Mexico, and it makes sense: Do yourself a favor and try what is a fun mix of the authentic and the creative here at Mextizo. Cedar Rapids has what might be referred to as an overabundance of Mexican restaurants, but this one stands out. Service was attentive and effective. HUGE menu. My enchiladas mixtas had four types of chicken-based enchiladas in everything from cheese to an adobe-colored sauce which was somewhere between mole and cinnamon flavored, savory and not sweet. Nice, and authentic for sure when compared to what I've had points south of Mexico City. I took a convincingly steamy, smoky video of mom's beef fajitas and will try to find a way to upload it later. Trust me, she's picky there and they delivered tender beefiness to satisfy. House-made corn tortillas are available in addition to more familiar flour ones. My wife's jalapeno margarita dusted with spicy and tart Tajin had fresh jalapeno peppers and was a fun, if not wholly authentic addition. The margaritas are oddly crystal clear, but don't taste artificial, so order with confidence. They're huge and strong, so go slow! read more

We arrived and ordered the fajitas for two from looking at the online menu. Don't know if this has been changed since but we were charged a few dollars more than the price on the online menu. We didn't bring it up but just be aware. Fajitas were pretty middle of the road, some bits were charred. Not worth the $33 dollars we paid. Drinks were good, the service was alright(we sat at the bar). We liked the ambiance and decor. Also would recommend to check out the 8 health code violations before coming here. read more

the only good thing i have to say about this is their servers and wait staff are incredible, i have nothing cruel to say towards them. i want to give the kitchen the benefit of the doubt, because we showed up just after a rush-- however, my california burritos rice was pretty dry and hard to swallow, the potatoes inside tasted like old mcdonalds french fries. my partners carne asada was also unseasoned, and had so much fatty pieces it was nearly 2/3s of each piece of steak. the restaurant itself was clean and beautifully painted. read more
