I came here for dinner while in town for work. I sat at the bar, service was quick and the bartender was friendly with everyone sitting. I ended up getting some guacamole with my chips and salsa, all of which were very good. For my entree, I got the pollo chipotle - it was a huge meal! I used to have something similar at a go-to restaurant near my house, but unfortunately the restaurant closed, so I was happy to find it here! It was very tasty and the menu is substantial. We've really wanted to try this one as we've heard decent reviews from friends. Our normal place is now a long drive after relocating here so we're trying to find our New Mexican spot. For positives: the restaurant is beautiful and staff are very friendly. The queso was also good and we loved the salsa. The not so good.... First off: I Loathe when there isn't clear direction upon walking in. Am I taking a seat or waiting to be seated? Standing there and awkwardly shuffling after a couple minutes to finally be greeted feels weird. People don't want to do the wrong thing. If your host has other jobs please just place a sign saying wait to be seated. We're seated, drink orders are fairly prompt, queso comes out in good time. The chips are good at first but as they cool down they actually get pretty firm and stale feeling rather quickly which was a new thing for us. My drink had a weird after taste and after explaining to my husband who used to work in the kitchen he thinks my glass just didn't get rinsed or maybe double washed, it didn't taste flat, but chemically. Husband had quesa birria which is his go to and I had pollo con arroz. He liked the consume but whatever additional sauce they had with it was SO incredibly spicy that it ruined the tacos. He loves heat and can absolutely tolerate heat, but when it's all heat and no flavor but bitter, it's just not pleasant. Pollo con arroz is the standard for me. And here I just didn't like the rice. The flavor wasn't quite right and adding in corn and other vegetables adds sweet little bursts that aren't pleasant (to me) in this kind of dish. The chicken was fine, it was a little odd that it did t come with tortillas though. Portions were smaller and prices were higher than our go to place. Service, though it was friendly, was reaaaaaaaally slow. It didn't look to be overly busy and we waited about 50 minutes for the two meals and a mini corn dog meal for our son. And even after we got our food the waiter stopped by as we were finishing asked if things were good, and we didn't have a chance to ask for the box or a check he left so quickly so had to wait an additional 20 minutes to leave after eating. There's dozens of other Mexican restaurants to try in Cedar Rapids, so we'll keep looking for our new regular place. read more

Basic food order took over 50 min to come out after order. To add insults to the long wait, other parties who ordered long after us received orders way ahead of us. We talked to the waiter, manager and even the cook after we complained, not one of them apologized or took responsibility. Not a way to treat you customers. Will not be back read more

Stopped in for lunch, menu had some depth, but mostly classical Mexican dishes with lots of customization options and most importantly lots of veggie and low carb options. I went with the grilled shrimp salad, and it was the right size with good quality. read more

First time here - came because of the reviews on Yelp and quite honestly because we were craving Mexican!! Clean location Friendly staff Wide variety on the menu I ordered the Chimi Special and my wife had the mahi tacos, Both were delicious. And Authentic! Very well done! Will definitely eat again. Washed it all down with a house marg and the wife had a horchata agua Fresca. Both passed the test! All around - awesome! Sat at the bar as it was a 20-minute wait. Lunch with a friend. It was early so we were sat right away. Our server also made our margaritas, he was amiable and quick. The decor felt right at home. The barrel margaritas are second only to Cancun here in Cedar Rapids. The chips and salsa were good, the spice level on the salsa sneaks up on you after a while. Good stuff though. The Chori-Queso is chorizo and chile con queso together. Warm gooey goodness with your chips. The chicken molé is the best I've had in Cedar Rapids. Slightly sweeter yet a touch more bitter than other places. The rice was on point. You get guacamole, pico, jalapeños and lettuce on the side with corn/flour tortillas. No beans (mild disappointment). They have a lunch menu if you'd like, we did not. 5/5 will definitely return. read more

Met a couple of friends here for dinner while in town. The entrance is a vibe with all the flowers... feels like entering a garden. The decor indoors is also very instagrammable. I just sometimes wonder how quickly will dust mites start falling or if there is a solid cleaning schedule for all the decor. Our sever was sweet, helped us make choices off a very extensive menu. I had the vegan bowl with the vegan chorizo. The food was very flavorful and I had plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day. The complementary chips and salsa also tasted very fresh. The tortillas were fried in house and were definitely not from a bag. All in all, it was a great experience and I will definitely come back and try other items on the menu. read more

Food was cold and the waiter, Carlos, practically threw the food on the table when he came back. Oh and then it had a hair in it. Gross!!!!

The service is incredibly slow. We got here at 12:40 and are still waiting on our food at 1:20. We won't be back.

This is an interesting new place, very nicely decorated with a green feeling. The margaritas were decent. This place just opened so they were not offering any drink or food specials just yet. The staff were friendly and attentive not overly pushy as we sat drinking as opposed to ordering food. We will come back another time to try the food, from what we smelled it seamed good. read more

Great food! Have been wanting to try it for a while but never get to that side of town. The servers were very friendly, the place was swamped (it was Mother's Day). The inside was decorated pretty cool. The chips that come out beforehand are really good! So, I've hadn't yet tried Quesabirria Tacos so I decided to go for it and they were delicious! Definitely recommend! I had also had a side bowl of the Elotes corn. Spicy, but good. You could tell it was off the cob because some of the cob silk was still in it. My son had the Chorripollo, and I snagged a piece of the chicken and it was awesome! My husband ordered the ground beef chimichangas and he said they were pretty good. This has become our go to taco Tuesday place. The staff is friendly and helpfulful. The placevis clean with cool artwork on the walls. We love the patio when the weather's good. I havent sampled alot of their food, but the Tuesday taco special is very good. The barrel margaritas are good. Maybe not the best, but good. read more

I haven't had a bad experience yet. Service is great, staff are friendly, it's clean, and the menu has something for everyone. I rarely rate 5 stars, but I can't find a negative! This time I got pork mole and it came out beautiful and so much food. Very flavorful mole. If you don't like mole or are a simple eater I would not recommend because it is rich and has a lot of depth of flavor. However, if you want to try something new - do it! It's much more flavorful than I've experienced with other restaurants. He got the Choripollo which was also excellent. They do have a wait sometimes, so plan ahead. $4.75 house mix margs during happy hour. Otherwise the margs are delicious, but in the $10-$14 range. They also do taco Tuesday, but I have not been there yet for that. Highly recommend. read more

Out of the listed 30 top Mexican restaurants reviewed in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding area, I've eaten at over half over the years. Having eaten at Mextizo recently, it quickly has become my number one and favorite. The owner of Mextizo is amazing and great to talk to. The food and service are exceptional. Our wonderful waiter recommended the Saturno Margarita, which turned out to be the best-balanced Margarita I've ever had. My wife enjoyed some incredible enchiladas, while our son had a kid's quesadilla with fries and a very tasty lemonade. I was unsure what to order and mentioned to the waiter that I usually get fajitas at Mexican restaurants, as I've been spoiled by good Mexican food on a few trips to places like San Antonio. Upon hearing this, the waiter explained that the owner is from Mexico City and many of the recipes are based on his experiences there. He recommended I try the "Street Quesadillas," which are made with handmade corn tortillas and then fried--a method I'd never tried before. Even though I'm not usually a fan of corn tortillas, the waiter promised that if I didn't like them, he would remove them from the bill and bring me something else. He only needed to know which meats I wanted to try, and I could sample different types. When the Street Quesadillas arrived, they looked nothing like the flour quesadillas with melted cheese I've come to expect. However, from the first bite, I was hooked. These delightful treats were amazing and huge--I ended up taking half the meal home, and they warmed up well in the air fryer. Overall, I give Mextizo top marks for authenticity, service, and taste. One word of advice: bring people you actually want to talk with, because they cook real food here, not just warmed-up dishes like you get at some modern-day restaurants. It takes a bit longer, but it's worth the wait. read more

Overall really good! I stopped in during my lunch break so being fast was a must for me. I was offered a virgin daiquiri (ok inclusivity!!) and it was so so good! The food was hot and ready in about 20 minutes, btw the Camarones al Mojo de Ajo is one of my favs in CR (but none of their seafood options ever disappoint). Why a 4 instead of 5- FLIES! Haven't seen any reviews of this place for awhile! We have recently moved to Cedar Rapids after living in Southern California for over forty years where authentic Mexican food is the real deal. We have been here at least five times and the food is touch and go...however...it's the closest to authentic that we've experienced in Cedar Rapids. The food is fresh, hot, and taste worthy. My only real complaint is their salsa is quite bland-no kick! The ambiance portraits well for the culture it presents-being in the great Midwest. The service is exceptional. They do aim to please and make your dining experience the best possible. Overall review from me...the best Mexican restaurant in the Cedar Rapids area. read more

I love going here! When I have family visiting from out of town they always request going here. Chips and salsa are always fresh and consistently good. Booths, tables , floors always look clean. Service is quick , friendly and helpful! Menu is a good size. Lots to choose from with out being overwhelming. Familiar favorites ( nachos, tacos, quesadillas) and something different if you want to mix things up. The guacamole is amazing. Hands down some of the best I've had. EXCELLENT!!! "Mextizo" is a mix of the Spanish words for "mixed" and Mexico, and it makes sense: Do yourself a favor and try what is a fun mix of the authentic and the creative here at Mextizo. Cedar Rapids has what might be referred to as an overabundance of Mexican restaurants, but this one stands out. Service was attentive and effective. HUGE menu. My enchiladas mixtas had four types of chicken-based enchiladas in everything from cheese to an adobe-colored sauce which was somewhere between mole and cinnamon flavored, savory and not sweet. Nice, and authentic for sure when compared to what I've had points south of Mexico City. I took a convincingly steamy, smoky video of mom's beef fajitas and will try to find a way to upload it later. Trust me, she's picky there and they delivered tender beefiness to satisfy. House-made corn tortillas are available in addition to more familiar flour ones. My wife's jalapeno margarita dusted with spicy and tart Tajin had fresh jalapeno peppers and was a fun, if not wholly authentic addition. The margaritas are oddly crystal clear, but don't taste artificial, so order with confidence. They're huge and strong, so go slow! read more
