I ended up getting some guacamole with my chips and salsa, all of which were very good. For my entree, I got the pollo chipotle - it was a huge meal! I'll be back in the future!

For positives: the restaurant is beautiful and staff are very friendly. The queso was also good and we loved the salsa. The not so good.... First off: I Loathe when there isn't clear direction upon walking in. Am I taking a seat or waiting to be seated? Standing there and awkwardly shuffling after a couple minutes to finally be greeted feels weird. People don't want to do the wrong thing. If your host has other jobs please just place a sign saying wait to be seated. We're seated, drink orders are fairly prompt, queso comes out in good time. The chips are good at first but as they cool down they actually get pretty firm and stale feeling rather quickly which was a new thing for us. My drink had a weird after taste and after explaining to my husband who used to work in the kitchen he thinks my glass just didn't get rinsed or maybe double washed, it didn't taste flat, but chemically. Husband had quesa birria which is his go to and I had pollo con arroz. He liked the consume but whatever additional sauce they had with it was SO incredibly spicy that it ruined the tacos. He loves heat and can absolutely tolerate heat, but when it's all heat and no flavor but bitter, it's just not pleasant. Pollo con arroz is the standard for me. And here I just didn't like the rice. The flavor wasn't quite right and adding in corn and other vegetables adds sweet little bursts that aren't pleasant (to me) in this kind of dish. The chicken was fine, it was a little odd that it did t come with tortillas though. Portions were smaller and prices were higher than our go to place. Service, though it was friendly, was reaaaaaaaally slow. It didn't look to be overly busy and we waited about 50 minutes for the two meals and a mini corn dog meal for our son. And even after we got our food the waiter stopped by as we were finishing asked if things were good, and we didn't have a chance to ask for the box or a check he left so quickly so had to wait an additional 20 minutes to leave after eating. There's dozens of other Mexican restaurants to try in Cedar Rapids, so we'll keep looking for our new regular place.

The chicken and rice had an extremely minute amount of queso included, so the meal was DDDDDRRRRRRRYYYYY. I poured some of their tasty salsa on top and mixed it in, but it wasn't the same. The chicken was underseasoned as well, but the salsa mildly made up for that. Overall, it wasn't a terrible experience, but I found myself wishing I had tried a different place while I was in town. Sadly, I doubt I ever go back to El Viejo.

Place had plenty of space on a Monday night with a few patrons scattered around the restaurant. Chips and salsa are complimentary. Really nice, seasoned thick corn tortilla chips and a classic cantina style tomato salsa was a good start. I ordered the Steak El Paraiso, which comes with a T-bone steak and shrimp. The portion was absolutely massive. The seasoning on the steak and shrimp was excellent. And I could taste the grilled char on both the meats. The entree comes with 3 flour tortillas, which I used to construct little tacos. The side of rice was nicely seasoned and tender as well. The refried beans, while slightly under seasoned, were nice and topped with a good amount of melted cheese. I thought it was very reasonably priced in my opinion for the generous portion. Note that if you don't mention anything, the steak will be well done (which I did not mind, it was still very tender and flavorful). Service was very friendly, attentive, and quick. I'm impressed! I would definitely return here in the future if I come back to Cedar Rapids.

I recently visited Adelitas Mexican Restaurant in Cedar Rapids after hearing that they made their…read moretortillas in-house. Sadly, when I inquired about this before ordering, the server looked at me as if I was asking something outlandish and nonchalantly remarked, "We've never done that - there isn't ANY restaurant around here that has the people to do that." This set the tone for an experience that was a mixed bag. Service: Service-wise, I was left wanting. Not only did the server's dismissive response about the tortillas disappoint me, but I also encountered another hiccup when it came to payment. After we had already paid with a debit card, we were informed that ANY sort of card used was subject to a 4% service fee. This felt like a hidden charge that should have been communicated upfront. Another minor issue was the lack of drink refills. My guest ordered a soda and was never offered a refill or asked if they needed anything else. I only ordered water for lunch and was disappointed to be offered a single refill when our food was initially brought by someone other than our server. My cup sat empty for over half an hour while we finished our meal. Food Quality: The food at Adelitas was reasonably tasty but nothing extraordinary. While their flavors were acceptable, their menu offerings of only shredded chicken and ground beef options as protein fillings fall drastically short of what I consider "industry standard." I'm not saying everyone has to have a barbacoa pit out back, but at least having a chicken breast or steak option would be nice. I will say, I did appreciate their lunch special, where you can get two choices that included tacos, chimichangas, burritos, etc., and a very well-made tamale (with your choice of sauces - and they allowed me to substitute in their queso sauce). Atmosphere: Adelitas scores well on cleanliness and location. The restaurant is well-located and offers a cozy, family-friendly environment that makes it a great spot for a quick meal. The interior is clean and spacious, with decor that is vibrant and reflective of the restaurant's Mexican theme, creating a lively and enjoyable dining experience. Outdoor seating is also available for those who prefer it. **Overall Experience:** While Adelitas Mexican Restaurant is a decent choice for a quick lunch on this side of town, my overall experience left much to be desired. With so many better options not only in Cedar Rapids but also in the surrounding neighborhoods, I personally won't be heading back to this particular restaurant anytime soon. For those considering a visit, it might be worth a try if you're in the area and need a quick bite. However, be prepared for potential service issues and hidden fees.
