Well Pickett and I have been driving by here and we thought we'd go ahead and stop in and try it out. We were in the mood for Mexican. The staff was great. The quality of food was good. But it's all of us know every cook has their own way of Preparing the meals. In our case we ordered chicken fajitas. The seasoning was lighter than what we were expecting. Not bad just not what we were expecting for chicken fajitas. We sat inside in the back but on our way out we noticed they had an outside deck and people sitting out there and enjoying themselves. The ambience would've been better on the outside would have to remember that if we were gonna come back. Bottom line: you should check it out and form your own opinions. For us we check the box but when we're craving Mexican we're looking for a little more seasoning. Maybe it was an off night. Will have to give it a try again next time we're in the area. read more

We stopped in about 5ish for dinner on a Monday and was not crowded at all. I had the Echiliadas Cozumel and my husband had chicken chimichangas. Both were delicious and served quickly. Their salsa was awesome with big chunks of tomatoes. The rice and beans were just like my grandmothers. Prices were very reasonable. Will stop in again next time in town. read more

This is a great place for groups as they can seat larger parties and they were great at bringing the food out rather quickly. Likely the most boring" presentation of a meal I have seen in years. However, The flavor was good. If you don't speak Spanish, don't expect the bar or wait staff to engage in any meaningful conversation. Ok that my fault for not knowing Spanish and going to a Mexican a restaurant in Iowa. So crossed this place a lot of times in past 2 years. I didn't enter this place because of its name. I got jellyfish sting in Cancun n was upset with the name for the longest time. But after booking my tickets to Cancun again. I was ok to enter. :) So finally....... this is a food joint in the heart of the city. Lot of good places around, but having their parking lot full was hard to believe. But then as soon as I had my first bite of their chips n salsa I was sure this place wouldn't disappoint me. Waitress was calm n friendly even at 10pm. Where you knew you needed good food n margarita. And we had the best margarita 'Sangria Strawberry peach margarita' as the name sounds it was full of Aaaaallllcooohhhhool. With the food we had veggie quesadilla flourito and Nachos. Nachos could have been more cheesy. We had to order a cup of quesso. Flourito was different but their homemade side sauce was good. And you can't go wrong with the veggie quesadilla. Now the setup A good size full bar with the lot of space. The dining area was good as well. It will be a good practice to have gloves on when wrapping the tissues.... so was a bit concern. When the Mrs saw that they had Molcajete on the menu I was all over that! Steak, Chicken, Chorizo, Pork, Cactus, and Peppers all serv ed in a big hot pot served along with tortillas, beans and rice this is a lot of food! Definitely in the Top 5 Molcajete's I've ever had! Please do not come here!!! To start off, staff was very rude, the were giving attitude when asking for utensils. One of the servers actually rolled her eyes after asking for lime and salsa. And charged for the LIME!!! Cooks were pointing and laughing at our party of 10 on the way out. And to top it off we waited over an 1 hour for our food, as soon as we were about to head out , the waiter said it'd be right out and still took awhile longer. I had supper on 6/18 around 5:00, service was fast and friendly, prices were ok. I had the 3 crab enchiladas. I had a hard time eating them as the imitation crab was cold and more rubbery than normal. Put the imitation crab on the grill with some butter to warm it up and give it some crisp. I've been eating at Cancun ever since it opened a few years ago, and before that at their other location just around the corner on 6th St SW. Both places serve top notch Mexican fare. This location is in a larger building, so if you have a large group there is certainly more room in the rear dining area. There is also a good size area in the front, with additional seating a a large bar. The food has never left me wanting, for either taste or quantity. One of my favorites is the Fajita Quesadilla Loca which has chicken, shrimp, and chorizo. It comes with a side of rice and beans, and a small taco shell filled with pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole. The serving Is large enough that two lite diners can share. The carnitas is another favorite, as well as the Juan's Burrito and Enchiladas Super Rancheros (5 different enchiladas) very filling. The food has always been served fresh. The shrimp in the fajitas is outstanding. The salsa is made in house, and isn't runny, but also not chunky. It can vary in flavor and heat depending on the fresh ingredients. I like that. It's not out of a jar or can. Plus they always give you enough chips for 4 people. The service is always friendly, although on Friday evenings it can slow down a wee bit. Plenty of off street parking. If you're local or staying at one of the hotels in the area give Cancun a try. :) read more

I was born and raised in LA, CA. Lived 40 years in CO and now live in AZ. I know Mexican food and I can say that Cedar Rapids, IA has some very good Mexican restaurants. Cancun may be the best. Our server, Alondra, was spectacular. The atmosphere is beach casual. My wife had a tamale and a cheese enchilada, my son had the jallisco? fajitas and I had the texana fajitas. Everything was delicious. The portions filled us and sent us home with lunch for tomorrow. Good margaritas too. Will definitely be back. Recommend you give em a try. read more

Terrible service and experience. The service was so slow, one guy for like 9 tables. Our table was a table of six, we had to ask for refills on everything because the guy never came back to our table. When we first sat down, the guy asked what we wanted to drink, but we didnt have menus. This was our first time there and he just waited for us to tell him. We were so confused, so we just guessed. We recieved the menus, my meal was wrong when I received it. I asked for beef enchiladas instead I got chicken. They took it back but the worse part was my enchilada shells were like raw corn tortillas? Normally they are toasted at least than wrapped? I'm not sure if they were just in a rushed and just took a short cut on fixing fast but it was like eating raw dough. read more

We were in the area while we were waiting for repair to our motorhome. Pleasantly surprised to find an excellent Mexican restaurant in the Midwest. Salsa that came with the chips was excellent. The portions were huge. I had the beef fajita for one and it was easily enough for 2. There was more meat than vegetables. The other meal was a perfectly seasoned seafood soup with a huge shrimp/prawn. The food was so good we returned again the next night. I had the carne asada with beans and rice, which was as good as I've ever had. The other meal was a huge chicken and beef burrito, again excellent. The first night was a Saturday and they had an all woman mariachi band. The music was a wonderful treat and a lot of fun. read more

We like our mainstay Mexican restaurant (Los Compadres) so much it was difficult to venture off to a another place. We were glad we did however! The chips and salsa were fresh, not much heat, but great flavor none-the-less and since I hadn't eaten lunch I devoured them. We split a platter of Texanas Fajitas, which come with chicken, steak and shrimp plus the usual grilled vegetables. It was nicely seasoned and freshly made, still sizzling as it arrived at our table. With an extra order of tortillas this was enough to get us both stuffed. Cancun is literally just off I-380 on 33rd Ave SW in the former Happy Chef location. Being in the middle of hotel row they seem to do a good business here, presumably with both travelers and locals like us. One suggestion for the business owners: why not offer breakfast too? With Perkins being the only other breakfast house in the area, I would think the location is ripe for more early morning businesses. Serving both American and Mexican breakfast favorites would greatly expand your clientele, getting a bigger share of the older crowd. Where else can you get a Denver omelette and an authentic huevos rancheros or breakfast tacos in the same place? read more

I just moved to IA from TX so I was pretty nervous trying a new Mexican food place... I wouldn't say that Cancun is the very best I've ever had, but I think it's the best I've had here in IA. My husband said his michelada was the best he's EVER had - he even gave the bartender an extra tip, it was so good. We will be frequenting this place! The only reason I couldn't give that 5th star is because the salsa is not good... You can tell right away they use canned pureed tomatoes, which is such a pity, considering the produce up here is top notch! read more

Staying in Cedar Rapids on snowy night and there were 3 different Mexican food restaurant food spots within a quarter mile from hotel. Chose Cancun because of yelp reviews and desire not to venture to far from hotel. Chips and salsa were less than average, but things looked up with entree. Burritos were good size and had flavorful fillings, had one beef and one chicken. They had fresh toppings and guacamole on top was fresh and chunky, also got some queso which was pretty standard. Margaritas were also fairly standard. Nice bar to sit at and staff was friendly enough, price were very reasonable. Overall, fairly average overall experience, I would go back if in same situation. read more
