When our food came out, I had ordered a single beef taco, but the server completely forgot to bring it. By the time I mentioned it, the moment had already passed. Met up with friends here after an appointment at UIHC. Solid 3.5 stars. I'm in a good mood--thought I would round up tonight. Kenny took care of us. He was very friendly but kind of flighty. Had to remind him a few times of things. Also, apparently the bartender stepped out on him, so he had to pour the beers himself. I thought they were reasonably priced. A pint of Pacifico was $4.50; a 25 oz. pour of Dos Equis was $7.50. I ordered the Steak Chacon. The menu says it comes with "fried potato slices, fried queso sticks, rice, beans, and tortillas". When it says it "comes with"; that is an understatement. The food pile was massive. And it was all very good. Seasoned nicely and the waiter brought out some extra bottles of hot sauce. I was hoping they'd be more of a house sauce, but they were commercial grade; one was Tapatio. Comes with tortillas, which I don't believe you can see in my picture. The queso was very good, as was the salsa. The chips were tasty too--they aren't your traditional tortilla chips however. Work out the kinks, I'll push this up to a five next time! read more

I dined here tonight with my youngest daughter and a friend and her daughter. Tuesdays are $1 tacos and a variety of specialty happy hour drinks. We also had the queso and guacamole. I do have to say the chips are the freshest in the area and queso the creamiest. The $1 tacos were ok and my daughter had the steak tacos (regular) menu price and those were ok as well. I'd definitely come back to try the queso with chorizo. I wish it would have been cooler to sit outside the great patio--next time! read more

The remodel from the former Mexican Bar and Grill was a definite improvement. It has a more evocative Mexican aesthetic with colorful murals of Xoloitzcuintli dogs. Seating was plentiful though the music was loud and I felt like I had to raise my voice quite a bit to speak to people at my table. The staff were friendly and felt like they were on the ball... once they noticed we were there. Our wait staff was attentive. The food was a mix. I had the Tacos Campechanos which were good. Flavorful. Well presented. The corn tortillas held together well. The rice was a bit bland as was the refried beans. Though it really felt like the beans were homemade. If just a bit more seasoning it would have been perfect. My spouse had the chili rojo and enjoyed it but also felt everything was under seasoned. According to them the corn tortillas were the best thing. We split a slice of the tres leches cake. Which was huge. Split it. The cake was good. Unfortunately it was covered in thick, overly sweet whipped frosting. The cake alone would have been great. I enjoyed it enough I'll be back to try another entree or two. Im hopeful the seasoning profile doesn't extend to the whole menu. We will see. read more

Let's just start off by saying that the patio was packed. That being said, we decided to sit inside. Upon arriving, we called and asked what the wait was and there wasn't one. Perfect. Asked if we wanted to sit in a "handicap" accessible table (it's right where people walk in). and politely declined. Then they sat us in the bar area. Usually my go-to anyways, so perfect....or so I thought. Both, me and my gf about fell on our butts, due to the fact that the floor was SO slippery. The chops and salsa were good but my chair fell into a hole while getting them. Did I mention the slippery floor?!?!? Last thing I needed was to fall into a GD hole!! Slid right into it. Strike 1 ‍. Now onto the drinks and food. We waited for about 20 mins to have our drinks served. Both were in smoking HOT glasses. Strike 2 ‍. The food came out and and other than my beans, everything was hot....almost strike 3 but it all tasted delicious and their homemade hot sauce would make anyone sweat! Be wary of the red sauce....its fire but oh so tasty. The next round of drinks was SO much better and colder and our waitress kind of came to life, so I'm just saying that they just they just were a little overwhelmed, (even though they weren't that busy). The biggest issue I had with XOLO was how long it took to get our food. We ordered our drinks and, shortly after, we ordered our meals. 30 minutes later we still had not gotten our meals. We had to ask for our orders to go because we had to return to work. It took the staff another 15 minutes to bring our food to us. If I was eating dinner, I may not have minded the long wait for my food. I could enjoy their chips and salsa and drinks, but for the lunch crowd 45 minutes does not work for most people. I ordered the grilled chicken chimichanga, which comes in a pair. The combined size was about equal to a typical chimichanga. The chicken was grilled well and was tasty. The chimichanga was more like a burrito and not fried like one would expect. I don't feel like I got my money's worth in this dish. The portion and the side of refried beans and salad were average for the cost. I have had much better for less from other restaraunts. Overall, the food was average, but the service was excessively slow for lunch. The new interior decor was nice, but the music was a little loud for my taste. Be prepared to wait if you decide to try this place. read more

It was completely packed tonight but the staff was absolutely killing it! The food took a little long to come out but when it did it was worth the wait. From the amazing chips and salsa to the excellent and good sized entrees, it's definitely more of an upscale Mexican restaurant. The chips were the best I've ever had to be honest. Kudos to the wait staff for acknowledging the longer than normal wait time for food and assuring us several times our food would be out shortly. They went above and beyond to give great service and make us feel welcome. A friend and I went to Xolo for dinner on a Friday evening. We arrived around 6:30 p.m., which I understand is a busy time, and we were seated within about 10-15 minutes. The staff seemed to be working hard, but it took another 30 minutes just to get our drinks, and we ended up waiting more than two hours for our food. Unfortunately, this was the slowest service I've ever experienced, and I don't think I'd recommend this restaurant. The margaritas were $15 each, price not listed on the menu, and honestly I could have got a better margarita for less elsewhere. The staff offered only a brief apology for the delay, with no effort to make it right. As someone who worked as a server for years, I would've at least comped a drink or dessert after such a long wait. In total, my friend and I were there for nearly three hours before we finally closed out our tab. I wanted to like this place but I will not be coming back. read more

I've been eating in Mexican restaurants around the area since the 1970s and this is the best I have ever experienced. Our party of six received excellent and attentive service from the moment we walked in the door. Our server (Jasmine) was top-notch and the food was fantastic. we were celebrating two anniversaries and the staff was so kind as to comp our table desserts for the occasion. If you are looking for something better than the run of the mill Mexican restaurants, this is one to try. read more

We prepared for our meal based on the reviews of others--we scoped out the menu ahead of time and were prepared to order upon arrival. Even so, it was 45 minutes before we got our food--which is great if you want to chat but not great if you are eating at a Mexican restaurant because it is quick. It has a nice atmosphere so it is pleasant, but in general we like it to be quicker. Our favorite local Mexican is La Mexicana, and we compare everything to that. The chips here are good--better than Mexicana and the choriqueso was great. The salsa is fine, La Mexicana is better. The rice and beans--which are critical to my enjoyment-- were subpar. La Mexicana wins by a mile. The chili rellenos at Xolo use queso blanco, so the center doesn't melt--this is not a bad choice, just not our favorite, but they were well made, but served without a sauce. There are a lot of menu selections Xolo that you cannot get at La Mexicana, and the Chicken Milanesa, the fish ceviche, and the Huaraches are an example of that, and were all well made if under seasoned. The choripollo was very good--maybe better than La Mexicana. Overall, we would not go back--but might if we lived closer. It is more expensive than your average Mexican restaurant, but with large portions. The food was too under seasoned for us--even under salted, and definitely not spicy enough. The guacamole is not good--probably jarred rather than made in house. Not enough salad with the main courses for us either. The drinks were so so and expensive. read more

We had a fabulous meal Monday night, celebrating my wife's birthday, at a new restaurant in North Liberty - XOLO. Terrific food + great presentation. Margs galore + a really good beer selection. A lot of staff - more than enough to provide a high level of service - Yaire was our server and she was outstanding. Very pleasant/interesting atmosphere/ambiance inside plus an outdoor patio. Huge menu - very authentic - more "Mexico City" than "Tex-Mex" imo. I've had the good fortune to travel across the country for business - and this is one of the best "Mexican" restaurants we've ever dined at. We'll go back and you should try it, too. I was incredibly disappointed by how this restaurant handled an obvious issue with their air conditioning. Despite it being uncomfortably hot, management ignored repeated concerns from both staff and customers. The worst part was watching how poorly they treated their own staff -- who were working so hard under tough conditions. No one should have to work (or dine) in that kind of environment. Until they learn to treat both their team and guests with basic respect, I can't recommend this place. read more

It was beautiful outside and the patio was half full, I requested a seat outside and the man told me "we're currently full". Sitting inside was alright but why have more tables than you can serve? We waited 45 minutes for our food. We had to request silverware on 3 occasions, and when we received them, they were dirty. Food was decent but Fiesta has better. Since our waitress never checked on us we didn't get a chance to tell her the rice was either way overcooked or dry along with the beans. At least their chips & salsa were good. We sat outside. We were super excited to check this place out after hearing the podcast interview. We did like the atmosphere and decor when we arrived, very cool! We were at at a table in the upstairs seating. We waited quite a bit for our server to greet us, but we could see they were busy and tried to give the benefit of the doubt. We were greeted after about 10 minutes and were able to put in our drink order. Waters with chips and salsa came shortly after. It took about 10 minutes for the margarita, so we were 20 minutes in at that point. 35 minutes after putting in our food order we were more than ready to leave at that point. We had seen our server only 1 or 2 times while waiting, so we finally asked another server for a manager. The manager came over and at that time we expressed that it had been 35 minutes for our food and asked for the check and to have our food boxed up. As we were requesting that someone did bring our food to the table. The manager did not apologize for the wait, just simply stating "It was really busy and a Friday night, so the food was going to take longer". We paid our $70.00 bill and took our food to go. The food was mediocre at best once we got home to eat. Definitely a disappointing experience and while we acknowledge that restaurants get busy, 35 minutes it way too long to wait for your food, regardless of the day of the week. read more

Party of 6 went last night for a really late father's day dinner. This was our favorite spot when it was El Patron. We waited for over an hour for our food. Our server seemed new, which was fine he did his best. We were the only ones seated upstairs. It was ok with us since it was more private. However we felt forgotten. Our son and his girlfriend came from out of town 1 hour away to celebrate. His girlfriend doesn't eat pork is a Muslim . She ordered a shrimp fajita. When it came out, it had pork in it. The server and another server was looking over her skillet saying it was just a piece that might have fell off from another plate, does she want it back??? Of course not after other people inspecting her food and pork being in it. She asked for her food to go since we been there over an hour already. The new fajita to go was missing tortillas & the veggie plate, for the price we paid you'd think they'd get that right. They could have at least compt her meal for the inconvenience. The restaurant was very beautiful. The update was unbelievable. But our service was so bad. We were told that the main cook was sent elsewhere. We ate what we could until the fajita came and packed up and left. Hopefully they can figure it out. Pricey. Most plates $15 & up. read more
