The words directly from my wife:
"My family and I finally got a reservation at Meximodo in Metuchen- I was so excited to try this place! I accompanied my six year old son into the women's bathroom (bc I'm a woman and he's too young to go alone in a men's restroom). While walking in, a female employee was ahead of us and tried to go in but decided not to when I walked in- she stood outside the restroom looking at me when the door closed. Along comes another woman apparently, and when the door opened again as another lady exited, BOTH of these ladies decided to very rudely say to me "You know this is the women's room right- why are you here?!" In front of my son. In an aggressive manner. My son was clearly upset so I was busy comforting him while telling the ladies who came up to me that I am indeed a woman AND a mom and they should be ashamed of themselves being so rude especially when they were WRONG. I asked to talk to the manager in duty- he proceeded to to basically dismiss me saying the employee doesn't speak good English and didn't mean to be rude with the other lady customer and probably didn't do it on purpose. I am absolutely horrified and upset. In the heart of diverse Metuchen. And this manager said he'll give the kids free ice cream bc kids love ice cream. What the actual f*ck?!"

It's also disgusting that the manager brought the icecream to the table and started apologizing to ME, basically ignoring my short haired wife, and giving the same excuse. (Hello, femme privilege I guess?) A language barrier had nothing to do with this, and, as I said to him, it ruined a nice, rare family night out to eat. I'm so furious on so many levels right now. Actually, furious doesn't even remotely begin to describe it.
A family night out, especially at a place that isn't a typical family restaurant, is a rare privilege for many families, including ours. We were willing to spend a decent amount of money and splurge on our family for a nice occasion. We were celebrating the almost start of Winter Break, and the end of a long couple of months. Our special night out was tainted, and the fact that the manager didn't understand that this wasn't a problem solved by icecream is really upsetting. Our son is an emotional, reflective child, and he was very upset by this. Our daughter couldn't understand why he said the workers were mean to Mama. This is NOT acceptable.
I was going to "check in" and post pics of the restaurant/ our food/ our excitement of a nice night out, but everything was soured. So, instead, I'm checking in with these photos I took when we were excited to see Santa on the roof, and sharing my disappointment in Meximodo. Do better. Icecream and saying "I'll talk to the staff" is not a solution. They did give us a slight discount, but nothing can make up for having to explain to our children why their mama was treated as "lesser than" at a restaurant we were excited to visit as a family.
Our family will not be back, much to our disappointment. Cute aesthetics and breaking a world record for drinks do not make up for blatant mistreatment and rudeness of employees towards other human beings, especially customers. We shared our experience with our family and friends, and it can safely be said that many connections of ours, both local members of the LGBT+ community and its allies, will not be returning to Meximodo in the future. read more
