Why do people lie in their reviews? I do not know. Some people want to help businesses by saying nice things or exaggerating their experiences. Perhaps they think they are helping the employees or the economy. But what about the customer that relies on reviews to visit a restaurant? I read several great reviews and decided to visit Mexico Viejo. I was deceived. We arrived at 4 pm, and there were only two other tables with customers. One of those tables was already done with their food, and their plates and empty beer bottles were everywhere. Our first impression was that this was a messy place with dirty and sticky tables. The waiters watched the movie "Cars" from a corner table while swapping their phones. The beans, rice, and pico de gallo came right away, and two things happened: One, I burnt my hand since the plate, I assume, was put into the salamander, and I was not informed. Second, we realized the pico de gallo was old; maybe that is intentional to honor the restaurant's name: Viejo. We order the molcajete. That was the first time I saw beef, shrimp, and chicken mixed with chorizo and cheese. The combination is mouthwatering and delicious but greasy and unhealthy. I wish I had known about the mixture before; that is my fault for not asking. Our meat was burnt, as shown in the picture, and soaked in grease. Our waitress was the only one serving the tables while the others continued sitting at the corner table, watching the movie and their cellphones. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this place, and I have zero plans to return. The people lying in their reviews have created a monster!

Located in the old Jack In The Box building this place has been showing some promise with the amount of people there on a regular basis. Atmosphere: it's called "Mexico Viejo Bar & Grill" as it does have a rather nice sized bar as you walk in. We sat at a table for service and it has your fairly typical Mexican diner vibe about it. 1 Star Service: Service was pretty good. We waited a little while on refills a couple of times especially on chips and salsa, but not an inordinate amount of time. Our waitress was very nice though and apologetic for the wait. She was hopping around the whole time as it was fairly busy. 1 Star Food: Every single thing we ordered was fantastic, minus one little thing that is purely on opinion thing. Wife said sour cream enchiladas were good and the sauce is very thick and stuck to them well. Kids both had beef enchiladas (one with queso and one with red sauce). This may be one of the best items on the menu. Both were very tasty. I had the steak chimichanga which was fried perfectly and the meat was good. This is the part where it's purely an opinion thing, but like I said, the steak was very good, but that's all there was in the chimichanga. Just steak. No grilled onions or bell peppers, no cheese, no poblanos, no nothing. Just steak in a fried burrito. I tell you what, they add the option to throw in some grilled veggies or some green chilis in that baby and it would be off the hook! As an honorary mention, get the queso, it is very good. 1.5 Stars Overall: Another place that is making very good authentic style Mexican food. There were lots of other options on the menu that I will definitely be going back for. They feature pineapple in a couple of dishes (which I love) as well as some unique Spanish style dishes. Can't wait to go back for more. Rounded up to 4 stars with 4.5-5 easily being attainable in the future.

    Yolanda's chicken Enchiladas!

Fastest service in a long time Had the Yolanda's enchiladas and hubby had the tamale plate. Green sauce was tasty. Waitress was amazing and relaxed atmosphere and great food! Chefs kiss! ‍

After a couple of revisits, it's really a hit or miss experience that just isn't worth the gamble. My first impression was great, but things just aren't consistent in regard to the service and the food. Queso and salsa have both been bland at recent visits. Food is good, but not as noteworthy as my first experience!

Everyone had been talking about this place, so we decided to try it. Very cozby small establishment. It does have a bar with beer, margaritas, and a TV (because football was on of course!) we tried the combo meal of chili relleno, beef enchilada, and a churchy taco. It came with refined beans and rice. We also got the Birria tacos which came with charro beans. I had never had a Birria taco like this one. Usually they are fried on the grill with cheese to make it crunchy and it has a broth for dipping it in. They came out dipped but not crunchy and no broth. Although I was disappointed the flavor of all the different meats we had were wonderful and very delish. We weren't crazy about the refried beans and rice, but the charro beans were very good. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things. Will give it another try. Staff was very friendly and always checking on you.

I was raised in California so I've had my fair share of great Mexican food. But I've been stranded in Abliene Texas for almost a week and found this place. Best food I've had by far. Reminded me of authentic Michoacan food but the owner is from Guadalajara. It's a must try for sure. Plenty of leftovers and super cold beer and great service.

We arrived around 5. Seated quickly and drink orders taken. I found it odd that they charge $1.89 for water that you didn't ask for when you got a beer. Queso was great but for 6.99 you will get a square thin bowl 3x3x1 1/2 in. Chips were all crumbs. Hot sauce lacked flavor and heat. I could taste and see pepper. Husbands carne guisada I wasn't a fan as it tasted like an Italian seasoning wang. My toxic carnitas were inedible with the two bowls full of grease on my plate. Kids had chicken nuggets that were really chicken strips over cooked and double fried old fries. Cheeseburger kids meal was a premade bigger patty with zero flavor. I don't ever mind paying $72.11 for a good meal, but not worth it!

    Nice dining room and bar.

Once upon a time, Abilene's only Jack in the Box. Now Mexico Viejo. I went by myself for Christmas Eve lunch. Ordered the birria tacos and talked to some friends while I waited. They had been here several times, and bragged on the food. The dining room and bar are very nice, they did a good job. I enjoyed the chips and salsa. This is the third place I have ordered birria tacos, and again, not what I was expecting. Meat on corn tortillas, with onions, cilantro, and lime on the side. No cheese. Apparently there are different ways to make birria tacos, as the tortillas had not been dipped in the stew juice and fried on the grill. I'll give them 3.5 stars, good but not great. The charro beans were a solid 4.5 stars, really yummy. I'll go back with Glenda and try something different. If your on Interstate 20, this is on the access road, so easy on and off if your in the mood for some Mexican food. To try what I consider real birria tacos, give Casamigos a try.

We popped into here for lunch one day. The food was outstanding, the service was quick, and very attentive. My husband had steak Mexicana and I had the Toxic Carnitas. We loved it all. They have been doing a lot of work to the place and it looks great. It was very clean too.

The food was good. I was bummed they were out of tamales. The waitstaff seemed overwhelmed. Our server was good, but I also saw people who left without being served.

Torta with carnitas. I had already eaten half of it.

Microwaveable Mexican food. Quesadillas was dripping water and cold in spots. Go to Hooters instead.

We usually drive up Saturday so lunch in Coleman, TX. Once we're settled in at our usual hotel we start looking for evening snacks and drinks. We dined at TaMollys once but didn't like the lack of a full bar. That restaurant has since closed. The Buffalo Wild Wings at the mall was horrible. We also went to Outback Steakhouse because it's within walking distance. Good drinks but we're not here to eat sub par steak followed by the # 3 ranked Texas Monthly steakhouse in Texas. Checked everything within reasonable walking distance. This is where Garry's local knowledge helped dial in Casa Herrera. Our group waited a few minutes before being seated. Served by veteran server (20+ years at the restaurant) it was a very pleasant experience. Here's how the food went. My entree consisted of a giant pitcher of Patron Margarita which I hoarded. As for the rest of the cuisine the photos are posted here. OK, I did share a bit with my GF and nearby friends. I've also been asked to do the steak run twice a year. We're coming back!
