First, a shout out to Abilene Yelper Garry H. for giving me the 411 on Casa Herrera. My car club peeps visit the Abilene area once a year to dine at a famous steakhouse in Buffalo Gap. We usually drive up Saturday so lunch in Coleman, TX. Once we're settled in at our usual hotel we start looking for evening snacks and drinks. We dined at TaMollys once but didn't like the lack of a full bar. That restaurant has since closed. The Buffalo Wild Wings at the mall was horrible. We also went to Outback Steakhouse because it's within walking distance. Good drinks but we're not here to eat sub par steak followed by the # 3 ranked Texas Monthly steakhouse in Texas. Checked everything within reasonable walking distance. This is where Garry's local knowledge helped dial in Casa Herrera. Our group waited a few minutes before being seated. Served by veteran server (20+ years at the restaurant) it was a very pleasant experience. Here's how the food went. My entree consisted of a giant pitcher of Patron Margarita which I hoarded. To begin, the staff isn't very welcoming. We went today after work because we wanted Tex-Mex and saw this place on Google Maps. We ordered a plate of "beef fajita," and the waiter decided it was the perfect time to correct us which we didn't really care for. When the food came out, the portions were extremely small. A fajita plate should at least fill a couple of tortillas, but one tortilla used up all the few strips of meat we got. We even told the server, "Ma'am, I think y'all forgot the rest of my plate back there," and she didn't even stop walking she just said "Yeah right" and kept going. Overall, the food and portions are very small, and the service isn't great. If I were to recommend anything, it would be to not go. You're better off finding a different place to dine in. Also as we were paying the waiters stated "I'm guessing no tip" over all a joke of a place. read more

This place was great! We were greeted by 2 Friendly & Happy ladies, who took my name and said there was a 10-15 minute wait. They didn't have a bar to sit & wait at, but the sweet hostess said she could take our adult beverage order and bring them to us while we waited. PERFECT! Give ME an Adult Beverage anytime and I can wait for hours. We started pulling out money to pay and she said, do not worry about paying for these, we can just add them to your bill when you're seated. Genius and yet PERFECT! I ordered a Margarita swirl with Tajin on the rim and it was so good!! The hot sauce was flavorful, the chips were crunchy and a good weight to hold the salsa on top. The Queso was a bit bland, but I added the hot sauce to it and then it was Muy Bueno I ordered the brisket plate for dinner, which I assumed was going to be like shredded brisket tacos like I've ordered many times at other places, but it was more like cubed brisket meat.... Still Great tasting, but I pictured it differently. I made (cubed) brisket tacos, using the flour tortillas with some lettuce, tomatoes & hot sauce and it was YUMMY. Their charro beans were super tasty too. I feel like this is an authentic and true Mexican food restaurant, with friendly service and great prices. On today's layover in Abilene this was my pick after reading a ton of other reviews. The previous reviews, the good and the bad, where right on the money. First I tried the red salsa, green salsa, and a small queso. The reviews on the red salsa were spot on. The 1st serving of red was not spicy, when waitress came back with another serving... it was spicy! Hilarious. The queso was bland, looked and tasted pretty much like the Frito Lay from the grocery store. The green salsa I liked best, it was fresh and tasted homemade. I had Chile Relleno next. It was ok, , not a heavy batter, which was a plus for me, but smothered in a ranchero sauce which didn't add much. Would have been much better to order it verde. Chips are baked, tortillas look and taste store bought. The unsweetened ice tea was perfect. Lots of locals in there from the conversations going on and the place was packed at 6pm, so people seem to like it. It's very affordable and locally owned and operated, a good thing. I think the key to this place is knowing what to order, which makes it a gamble for people passing through town. read more

I love Casa Herrera! The chips and salsa are my fav in town! I don't eat enchiladas anywhere but here. Their steak is so good. I don't know why their margarita machine makes the best margaritas in town but they do! The wait staff works here for years. We stayed one night in Abilene and always choose to eat somewhere unique that we can't get at home. We chose Casa Herrera primarily because it was nearby. First, the service was great. Our waitress was helpful and knew the menu very well. She was able to give good suggestions and was super friendly and attentive. To start we had salsa and chips. Both were fresh a tasted great. We added queso and it was pretty basic but still good. The waitress, who was from Laredo was nice enough to get us a sample of the beef fajitas before we ordered to see if we liked them. I had the chicken fajitas and they were decent. Nothing above ordinary with corn and flour tortillas, which weren't home made. To some this may not be an issue, but we are from South Texas so home made is preferred. . My wife had the enchiladas verdes and they were also decent. Just nothing super spectacular about the food. Good customer service. But as far as their Mexican food, they cover it in cumin. Everything has cumin. Salsa has it, rice has it. They even sprinkle it on the enchiladas and cook their chicken in it. My son got a good burger though. Rosas is a few levels up from this. read more

Great place for some Mexican food in Abilene. I ordered the steak plate which came with a 6 oz top sirloin, cooked perfectly medium rare, two beef enchiladas, rice and beans for $12.95. The prices are very reasonable here. The steak was delicious and the enchiladas really hit the spot. I also tried their crispy taco from my sons plate and it was delicious too. Their salsa is very good with just the right amount of heat and spice. The service was very good and we really enjoyed our visit. We'll definitely be coming back here next time we visit Abilene. read more

We come here abut once a month for lunch. I've never looked at the menu cause we LOVE the lunch buffet. The brisket mix is so good, and dessert comes with it. The hot sauce is a little plain for me cause I like it spicy. Give them a try. read more

This is not a Service Dog Friendly restaurant. * Good food * Good prices But this restaurant really let me down today. July 20, 2019 at ten minutes till 11:00 am my husband and I arrived at Casa Herrera Mexican Restaurant at 4109 Ridgemont Dr. Abilene Texas 79606. There was two other cars in the parking lot so my husband wanted to check if maybe they were already open, I asked my husband to inform them that I have a large service dog so that we could be seated in an out of the way place. My husband did go in and he did speak with them about my large service dog. The gentleman's response was that it was fine and that they will seat us further back. We don't go out to eat often and I haven't been feeling well and haven't been out much at all, so my service dog was out of practice. For some reason my service dog didn't want to go in. He didn't even want to walk up to the door. We had just came from Walmart without any problems and was surprised at his reaction. We were about to turn around and just pick something up on the way out of Abilene when a woman came out and asked to see our paperwork for our service dog. This is a question she is not allowed to ask. I responded with, a mobility service dog is not required to show paperwork under the Americans with Disabilities Act. She went on to say that the owners were older and are trying to comply with service dog policy. And again she went on to say that they had another person come in with a service dog beforehand and a separate customer complained that they didn't like the dog in the restaurant and threatened to stop coming back if they had service dogs there. Today she said that she would educate herself and the owners about service dogs. I said to my husband that we'll just go. I told her that I was disappointed. Her last reply was, " I told you we would sit you in the back." Yes, we could have stayed; but why would we? I truly feel we were treated unfairly. As I said, we don't go out to eat very often, thank you to Abilene's Golden Corral and Red Robin for treating us well... read more

I've been here a few times in the past but last time I went just really blew me away. It was a Friday night and they were super busy. We had a wait but it wasn't long and we the staff definitely made us feel welcome. The owner was running the front and sat us as soon as she could and a waitress came to us right away. The owner and waitress both helped fill our drinks and make sure our food came promptly. We felt so taken care of!!! The food was delicious and we all left happy. The chips are really really wonderful (puffy, warm, and crisp - just the way I like them) and they definitely make sure you have enough at all times! We had a great experience and will be back! Salsa is some of the best in Abilene, my husband and I always buy some to take home. Its a staple in our refrigerator. Sometimes its hot, sometimes its not- but the flavor and texture is so unique and always the same. If you aren't sure what to try, ask your server. They eat their too so they know whats good and whats just ok. However, this places is known for its authentic chiles rellenos (BTW its pronounced "chi-lays reye-nos", NOT RELENOS). Other popular items include the Lizzies Plate- YUMM YUMM. The fajitas are not stretched out by the unnecessary amount of onions and bell peppers like at other places. When you order fajitas, they dont skimp out on the meat! Another great item is the Enchiladas Rancheras. The taste is as authentic as it gets, reminds me of one of my moms sauces. This place has a full bar. And their margaritas are the best Ive found in Abilene so far. I hardly ever get the house margarita because my favorite is the Juarez which is perfect for those of us who like our drinks strong. But the basic margarita is good too; perfectly limey, sweet, and tangy, I just like a little more of a kick in my margarita. read more

Highly recommend! In response to the review stating this establishment is NOT service dog-friendly, this place is most DEFINITELY service dog friendly! I went to Casa Herrera this evening with my mobility service dog, Atticus. Nobody even questioned his presence. The previous reviewer stated that her dog was hesitant to walk through the door, which is an unacceptable behavior in a service dog. A service dog must be trained to be comfortable and obedient in all environments. I take great pride in my dogs' training, especially with Atticus. A service dog that does not follow and obey their handler is either very poorly trained or a fake. Did you know that if a service dog is out of the handlers' control, the establishment may legally ask for it to be removed? I have to wonder how this dog was behaving. Any responsible service dog handler will leave if their dog is having an off-day or behaving poorly. The staff not only did not hesitate to seat us, they let us choose a spot where he would have the most room to lay down. Now what you're actually here to read about: the food. Everything we ordered was excellent. To start, the chips and salsa tasted homemade. Our entrees came out hot, fresh and absolutely delicious. Service was fast and our waiter was very nice. In fact, every employee at this restaurant was nothing but kind and respectful towards us. My service dog and I will be back soon! Please note: it is a misdemeanor in the state of Texas to represent your pet as a service dog, punishable by a fine of up to $300 and 24 hours of community service. A service dog is defined as a dog that is task-trained to mitigate the handlers' disability. Emotional support and Therapy dogs are not service dogs and do not have public access rights. There is also no such thing as a "registered" or "certified" service dog. Websites selling these certifications are scams and have no legal standing. Service dog access is protected by federal and state law, the only two questions a business may ask are "is that a service dog?" and "what tasks is it trained to perform?". They are closed on Mondays but opened it up to our huge family for a funeral in town. Their wait staff was so friendly and welcoming. I know they came in on their off day and they still acted like it was a regular work day. We also held our rehearsal dinner there 10 years ago and they were just as awesome then. Great place. First of all, I must let you know that I love Mexican food, and specifically Tex-Mex. I have eaten at some of the best Mexican restaurants in San Antonio & Austin, so I'm writing from that perspective. The food here was okay, but certain elements were disappointing. The salsa has a ketchupy consistency and is barely spicy, and the queso resembles pasty velveeta. The margaritas are made weakly with a mix, and ours were watery. On the bright side, the service was attentive & the atmosphere is nice. Bottled beer was served cold. Now on to the entrees... I ordered the chile rellenos, which were more of a thin, Hatch type of chile, covered in average ranchero sauce. They did serve excellent charro beans (whole with fresh pico de gallo on top). I asked for those instead of the refried beans, which I noticed were dry and pasty. The rice is standard Mexican rice, pretty good. My tablemate ordered the spinach enchiladas, which were covered in a verde sauce that she said was pretty good. Other party members ordered chalupas (lots of lettuce, looked fresh), and enchiladas, which also looked good. Just not great. If I ate here again, I would just order a beer and go straight for the entrees. No need to munch on appetizers or sample mixed drinks. Being from San Antonio I have high expectations for Tex-Mex. Casa Herrera has always met my expectations, infact exceeded them. I have read many reviews from Austin natives bashing this place but just a note, your Tex Mex makes Taco Bell taste authentic. The salsa is not ketchupy, the food is not from a holding plate, and the beans are not made of paste. This place is about as home made as it gets and being so it will have some downs at times but they are very rare. I have triedeverything and love everything. The customer service is delightful and the restaurant is beautiful Try it, if you love it come back, if you don't go back to dirty Austin and stay there. read more
