My favorite mexican restaurant in all of Abilene. I've had over 7 different items in their menu and have loved every single one. Great vibes too. The service is pretty solid depending on who you get, but mostly happy people!

Had a fast enjoyable evening at blue agave. Food tasted great, queso was great, service fast, seating fast. absolutely zero complaints. happy to see a step up after last time.

Usually when you go to a Mexican restaurant and get chips and salsa on the house, chips aren't homemade and salsa is too spicy to enjoy much of. Not this place. I could have eaten them as my meal. Also splurge a little get the queso, it is well worth it. 10/10 on all food. We got the quesabirria (quesadillas made with birria meat), the mixed fajitas, sopapillas, and of course chips and queso. The service is amazing! The waitress was attentive and so sweet. It's a nice place to come get a fantastic meal and drinks. Watermelon marg is well worth the trip itself.

very good restaurant with lots of great employees The highlights are going to be their fajitas, enchiladas, and most importantly: their birria tacos

Blue Agave is a Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant located on Treadway just down from Hendrick Medical Center. Atmosphere: A much beleaguered location with several openings and closures in the last 10 years, the building is very much a diner style venue. 1 Star Service: Service was great. Sat us right down and our waitress was very attentive to us the whole time we were there. Very polite and very quick service. 2 Stars Food: We were given chips and salsa to start off with. The salsa was good with a nice kick to it. The chips were fine, (and I don't discount for their choice) just not my favorite style of chips. We also ordered the Queso with steak. Quite good. They serve some flour tortillas with it as well which were also good and seemed fresh. My wife ordered the Quesabirria (a take on Birria tacos but in quesadilla form) and it was massive! Huge portion. Definitely enough to feed two people. They had good flavor and the Birria sauce was decent. I ordered the fajita chicken chimichangas. Classic Tex-Mex style chimis usually come with rice, beans, meat and cheese and then are fried golden brown and topped with queso or some form of red sauce. What I got was not a chimichanga, at least not what I have ever eaten, and it is one of my favorite dishes that I order at many places. I've had them stuffed with grilled onions and peppers (my fave) as well as the classic mix mentioned above and several things in between. What I received were two smallish "wet burritos." Each were stuffed with grilled fajita style chicken and .......... that's it. Nothing else. No cheese, no beans, no rice. Just grilled chicken in a tortilla. And then it was grilled (like on a Blackstone) instead of fried (this is easily noticeable from my pics.) and covered with queso (which was good). With that being said, the chicken was fantastic on flavor. I will not discount the taste. Very good, but man, I was sure wanting for more, and longing for that crisp golden fried tortilla. Lastly, the rice was good and my refried beans were cold (as in burr.) The wife's charro beans did not suffer the same fate and were very good and hot. 0.5 Stars Overall: Let's just get this out of the way first. Nothing we had tasted bad. In fact it was all very good. The chips are a personal preference and the Birria sauce was just ok. The Birria meat was good. The chicken in the "chimi" was also very tasty. I will definitely come back to try something else. But I'll most certainly steer away from the chimichangas. I'd be remiss if I didn't come back and at least try the enchiladas and tacos. I rounded up to 4 stars but overall, it's a 3.5 star on this visit with the cold beans and disappointing chimi.

In town for work and stumbled across this gem. The service was acceptable, but the food is worth returning for. We had the queso with steak, chicken quesadillas, and quesabirria. The steak queso was good, very cheesy, but the quesabirria was the star of the show. Tender, savory, perfectly crispy tortillas. Nice meal!

Service was super attentive. Chips were unique and light. Salsa fantastic and a little spicy. California burrito was great and crunchy taco VERY good. Chicken enchiladas with green sauce were excellent. Rice and beans very flavorful. Would like to try everything on the menu.

Avocado salad was good. Beer was good. Kinda loud. Waitress forgot about me for about 20 minutes. I'd go back but not at happy hour.

Enjoyed the tasty, crispy chips! Chicken fajita was good, too. But with the loud chatter, music, and no acoustic file - it was really noisy!

So, I have already had one review here. After being in Abilene for about 6 months, and coming to…read moreGrain Theory (almost daily) during that time, I finally tried the Brewhouse Burger. OMG, as an "Old Fay Guy" who has had more than his fair share of burgers, this is by far one of, if not the best, burger I have ever had. Shout out to Chef Rob and the kitchen staff. This burger will stand up (surpass) a burger from anyplace around.

I will forever be amazed by cool places, especially when they appear in unexpected cities like…read moreAbilene. Located on the second story of a beautiful building in downtown Abilene sits Grain Theory, a brewpub and coffee shop towering over the city. It is a mixed indoor-outdoor space with plenty of shaded outdoor and cooled indoor seating. Looking at their tap list, my girlfriend and I were impressed by their unique beers to try. I started with the Strawberry Peach Tonic (Fruited Hard Seltzer) and she had a Bella Rose (Rosé IPA). Both were served in cool glasses, with mine being tall and skinny and hers being almost like a wine glass. Shocking to nobody, mine was quite fruity while her Rosé IPA was hoppy with an underlying rosé flavor. Next, I ordered their Oktoberfest (German Märzen) and she had their Season's End (Belgian Dubbel). She described her drink as tasting like a Biscoff cookie. My Oktoberfest was quite malty, and I was a big fan. To close, we both ordered their Luscent (Belgian Table Beer) because small beers are back in fashion and I wanted to try it. It was obviously very light but still had a good flavor that was very bready. Nice and easy to close out our drinks with. They also have food and coffee that we didn't try, but the food looked sensational from what we saw others eating. They also have plenty of board games and card games to play while you're at the brewery and many beers available to take to-go. My only minor complaint is the lack of TVs in the brewery. Maybe it's a purposeful decision, but Texas Tech was playing football, and it would be a great place to watch the game. The bartenders are very friendly and willing to let you try and sample as many beers as you need to make your decision. Grain Theory feels like the kind of place every small Texas city wishes it had. I am very excited to come back here and try more beers, especially with how excellent the space is. RIYL: Cool-shaped beer glasses or a rooftop bar

The last stop during my Abilene day trip was the wood-fire pizzeria Vagabond. We arrived at…read moreVagabond exactly at 6:00 pm, impressed by their cork decor outside the shop. We were immediately greeted by the server and seated just as quickly. The place was pretty busy, as one would expect on a Saturday at 6 pm, so it was great to be seated right away. The table was already set with two water cups, two plates, two sets of silverware, and two napkins, so we didn't have to set the area ourselves. Our server came shortly after with a large glass bottle of water and took our drink orders. My girlfriend got a bottled Dr. Pepper while I stuck to water. I also noticed they serve plenty of wines as well as a good selection of craft beers. They have ten different specialty pizzas, and we settled on their most expensive: the Carnivore. I say most expensive, but it was $20 for a pizza that fed two. It took about 10-15 minutes before the pizza came out, which is impressively fast. All pizzas are about 12 inches and are sliced into sixes. If you're hungry, consider an appetizer or a dessert, but to us, it was a perfect size with plenty of meat. The crust is thin and crispy, as one would expect from a wood-fire pizza. It was really excellent. For dessert, my girlfriend and I ordered their Saturday Morning Cartoons, which is a panna cotta with Fruity Pebbles that I enjoyed but she adored (I let her eat most of it). All in all, the meal was around $30 plus the tip I added. We were in and out in under 40 minutes, which was quite impressive for a sit-down pizza restaurant. I highly recommend this to anyone living in or visiting Abilene. P.S. My girlfriend wanted my Yelp review to note that their women's bathroom has hair ties, bobby pins, a Tide pen, and other items that you never know you'll need until you do, which gives Vagabond extra brownie points for going above and beyond. RIYL: An affordable meal for two.
