Monterey restaurant is one of the best kept secrets in town. It's also one of the best hole in the wall restaurants in town. Trinidad has owned it for years, and he and his staff do a really good job. Their prices are pretty cheap compared to other places in town, yet the food is fantastic. I guess I would describe it as homestyle Tex-Mex. Definitely a place you need to try if you want some good old style Tex-Mex. read more

We found this little jewel via YELP. It's not loaded with ambience, but who eats that anyway?? We tried multiple entrees. The crispy tacos were good. The chili relleno was very good and the cheese enchiladas were the star of the show!! Some of the best we've ever had.... and we've had a lot. The salsa was fresh, with a bit of kick. This is a simple, family-owned operation. We saw dad, mom and two kids working on Friday night. Dad is very personable. It's the kind of place you want to support - family run with good food. We'll definitely come back the next time we're in Abilene. read more

Went for the first time. Service not great, she kept forgetting us with refills and queso, we had to remind her about. I don't recommend the queso, it's out of a can. The food was decent but it is not authentic Mexican food. It is more Tex mex style. Hate that they don't offer beef steak for the tacos. Did not have green salsa. The service was ok. Server was not very knowledgeable of the menu. If you like Tex mex food than I recommend it but if you're looking for authentic Mexican food this is not the place. read more

So disappointed in the beef and chicken fajitas. We got them to go, brought them home, and the meat was dry, stringy and tough. Could not eat it. I ordered extra vegetables and specifically said happy to pay for lots of extra vegetables. We had a spoonful of extra onions. We've eaten here before and thought it was fine. Never again. read more

Ordered the combo plate and all but the enchilada was inedible. The ground beef tasted like tuna. Their sauce was cooked to the dried out enchilada and the chilies relleno was black. My daughter got the quesadilla and gagged. I told the waitress that the beef tasted like tuna and she told me she could take the food back. The food was out in minutes so it was obviously all precooked, weeks prior? No thanks. Go to Taco Bell. read more

Beef enchiladas were generously filled with lean savory meat and topped with gooey melted cheese, bathed in the perfect red gravy. Onions optional. The hot sauce wasn't as good as usual. Chips were served hot and crispy. I noticed they no longer have the bullet ice in the drinks. Excellent service as always. Update 9.11.19: Hot sauce was so good, very hot! Our favorite waitress is so friendly and got our usual order out in record time as always. We've never seen the place so slammed as tonight! The kitchen was running efficiently even so. This was OTHERWORLDY amazing! Tried it today on a whim and I'm thrilled I did. I had the cheese enchiladas and I got a family member the taco salad. Every bite was amazing. And the deep fried Oreos? Are you kidding me? Fabulous! I used the drive through (which I love that they have!) and they guy that helped me was SOOO kind, welcoming and hilarious! He answered all my questions, gave me tips for next time (call ahead to order so it's ready for you when you get there!) and made solid jokes! I'm only sad I didn't know about this place sooner! Such an awesome place to eat if you want the best Tex-Mex in Abilene. We got take out and it was so good I will go back weekly. Hot sauce, guacamole is to die for, chips are fresh, tamale plate puts a perfect twist on how they are served. Beef enchiladas and combination nachos are pure perfection. Normally I have to drive to Fort Worth to get good food like this, but not anymore. Cheap prices : $28 for all of this. Including a small bag of chips and three hot sauces that are about 1/4 cup each. Make this a place to dine at, if you haven't already. read more

We'll finally tried this place, service was horrible took 20 min after ordering to get our soda and tea! We ordered nachos totally lame no jalepenos asked 3 x did not make it to the table until entire meal came out! By then what they called nachos were cold and soggy and little to no meat. I wanted a combo with enchiladas and a taco but only comes with Chile relleno and I need gluten free so that was a no for me! Rice not completely cooked, and flavorless beans! I have had much better food at taco casa! I am still on the search for a Mexican restaurant with Mexican food that is good and that actually has chile con queso not cheese soup which seems to be the way out here in Abilene! Someone needs to open a Mexican restaurant with traditional items and REAL cheese queso that is not cheddar cheese soup or cream of chicken soup or something that is not so watered down your drinking milk! So over it! Closest ok Mexican-food is in Coleman And still not great just ok! No I won't be back to this place! read more

food is terrible. queso was straight out of a can like nacho cheese for ballparks. the Gordita tasted like it was made with fabulous cleaner. it smelled and tasted like a chemical. our chips had a hat looked like mold on them but no one bothered to bring fresh ones out. The rice tastes good but needed salt or flavor. beans were blah. taco was decent but no tomatoes anywhere. do not recommend this place read more

One of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had, and that's without even a chance to try the food. When I arrived, the hostess couldn't be bothered to start me, instead pointing to a table and telling me to sit there. 30 minutes later, and I still hadn't even ordered a drink, while watching other customers get seated, get drinks, get menus, and order. Locally owned and operated...the whole family is part of the efficient and very friendly staff. Mama's usually cooking. This is not some chain restaurant with cloth napkins that charges you 15 bucks for a sad nacho appetizer. In fact, nachos are not mentioned on the menu. It's the real deal. Closed Saturdays, so keep that in mind. Lunch on Sunday gets a little packed...go early or late. It'll be worth it. read more

On arrival I was happy to be greeted with Chips and Salsa (very good) one suggestion though maybe a little more heat and tsp of cumin, but non the less very tasty. I ordered Horchata I highly recommend this tasty drink, I wasn't sure what to order so I had the Taquitos special ( 5 taquitos w/ sour cream, pico de gallo, lettuce, and guacamole. I absolutely love when the meals comes with sour cream. pico de gallo, lettuce, and guacamole, the guacamole and pico de gallo were made in house and love that you could taste the lime. The special does not come with rice and beans. I wish they would of made the taquitos :-( no doubt about it they were store bought but still very good. This is a family run place with a lot of pride in their shop. The service was great; helpful, friendly, willing to make suggestions and worked well with us as we kept changing our order. The food itself is nothing fancy, no elaborate sauces or fancy presentations. It's just piled on the plate and served fresh and hot. The chicken isn't dry or stringy, the ground beef isn't greasy or mealy, and the nachos aren't piled high with fixings. Portion sizes are generous. Three of us split a half order of nachos and it was the right size for the table. The space is pretty good sized. It's sparsely furnished, so don't look for cheap Mexican tacky souvenirs or the Wals, but the space is clean and pleasant. Is was visiting the area, so not a local. Nevertheless when I'm back in Abilene this will be on my list of places to go back to. read more

This is my favorite place to go for non chain mexican food. It's authentic and tastes like you would get at someone's house or in a small restaurant. They make nachos with real shredded cheese. My favorite place is the combination plate. It comes with 5 different items, but no rice and beans. It also has a small dab of guac on the plate. Goes perfect with chips and salsa. I always order too much though and try adding cheese nachos and extra tacos. read more

Best Mexican food in Abilene!!! Get the enchiladas, salads, fajitas, tacos or even cheeseburgers!!! Service can be slow but the food is exertional and the prices are better than most. I hope that doesn't change! The atmosphere is small town feel but the food is better than most places in Texas!!! Best chips and salsa in town! FRESH! read more

My granddaughter's kid's steak quesadillas was missing the steak and the two orders of Pollo Poblano were not that. Instead of poblano sauce, the chicken was covered in grilled onions. With three of the dinners came flour or corn tortillas. We ordered one flour and two corn and were given all corn. Not the best experience and definitely won't order take out again.

They serve Mexican Coke and Mexican Fanta made with pure cane sugar, along with horchata, pineapple, and lemonade drinks, along with various Jarritos drinks and fountain drinks. I would've not even think twice about stepping into here because the outside and front of them Restaurant does not do it justice.. once you step inside you might feel the same way, but a few items off of the menu here sit down and enjoy the Mexican Coke that is in the refrigerator across from you and enjoy watching this very cheery lady how she treats every guest and jokes with them. Somebody complained about some lady being rude, but the one with a tattoo on the left side of her neck is far away from any kind of rudeness. Very pleasant to have your order taken from. The Emmanuel is kind of plain Jane with a lot of items marked crossed out and some of it changed, but it doesn't take away from the efforts that are going on in the kitchen back there. Prices are very good especially for a fast lunch. For example, the three street tacos is about $8 plus uncle Sam and with a drink that comes in at 32 inch cup. It's about $11.. I had the pleasure of trying the beef street tacos as well as a Chicharron tacos and a pita/gyro type one ,which was my least favorite, but it was still manageable on the pallet. There's not an accessible restroom here for you to use but they are more than glad will let you walk back there and utilize it to wash your hands as well. Sadly enough, I think I'm the only customer that ever washes their hands before eating. It's kind of gross but y'all do you.. The tables are kept clean when practical. It does get busy real fast and just as fast as everybody comes, everybody leaves so little patient here OK? The floors are not a problem. They're usually kept swept when they can.. If you can get over the street view of it as well as when you first walk in, just ignore all of that because you're not walking into a five star chain restaurant. This is a mom and Pop restaurant. Please give it a try and tell me what you think.
