Main course was good but we made the mistake of ordering side salads. Awful. A pile of spring greens (no iceberg at all) that looked pretty but tasted terrible. When the bill came, I asked that they be taken off the bill as we did not eat them and got a very abrupt "NO" from the manager. "YOU ORDERED THEM, YOU PAY FOR THEM". Period! We quietly paid the bill, including a $10 tip for the waitress, and left. We just moved here from Arizona and would have likely become repeat customers, but not now. Went tonight for dinner and it was just how we remembered it. We walked in and were seated immediately. Our server was so incredibly nice! It was pretty obvious that we were some of the only non-regulars. The restaurant is well lit and the music is a great volume. We ordered the nachos with steak and the chicken chimichanga with chile verde to dip! Everything was amazing! We were so full but still had to get some sopapillas (called something else here) and we were so glad we did because they were some of the best we have ever had! So disappointed in the customer service. I made an order through Door Dash but the restaurant gave the dasher the wrong items. I contacted the restaurant and they told me there was nothing they could do and I had to go through Door Dash to address the problem. It was not a Door Dash problem it was a restaurant problem. My husband and I ate there tonight. We both ordered carne Asada, minus the rice with the meal. Instead, we ordered the side salad. The carne asada was very good, the salad was terrible. A sorry plate of spring greens with a splash of traditional iceberg lettuce. We did ask for our money back on the salad as neither of us ate it. This is our go-to Mexican restaurant. The food can't be beat, although my husband and I rarely venture from our favorites. I love the deluxe taco salad and he is 100% sold on the smothered burrito (and has been going there since he was a kid). We like it at Mexico Cafe and took our kids and grandson there on a Friday night. There was some confusion when I put our name in. I said we were a party of four with a toddler and the girl marked down party of five. They kept us on ice until people vacated two tables of four to get us seated. After almost 30 minutes the lady in charge realized we were four with a high chair and she found us a booth. They had some large tables coming in. I guess I should have been happy to get seated. We waited 20 more minutes to order then waited close to if not over an hour to get food. We have always had prompt service but we don't usually go on a Friday night. Our toddler grandson held it together pretty good. Maybe better than I did actually but he too had his limits. By the time we were served our order he was done. If we had waited any longer we were going to start getting mail there. I asked for the check right away to avoid another wait. I was ready to leave before the order came. When you see people seated after you leaving after their meal BEFORE you even get yours it's frustrating. We will go back for sure but not on a Friday night. read more

Mexico Cafe has been a West Mount Vernon staple for decades, and for good reason. This family-owned little Mexican restaurant serves up authentic, tasty goodness. And, bonus, they have one of my favorite beers (Negra Modelo) on tap! I'm especially fond of their lunch specials, including their pork chile verde which, in my opinion, is borderline addictive. It tastes like it's been sitting in a slow cooker for hours. The meat is so tender, and there's just enough spice. Speaking of spice, I only recommend ordering their camarones a la diablo if you LOVE it hot. Because theirs will make your eyes water. I love spicy food, and could barely finish mine (but it was so good, I had to). The place is a bit divey, and I'm sad that they don't have a separate bar area, but there's plenty of parking and the service is always fast and friendly. Located on the west side of Mount Vernon. This place has a good mix of Mexican food that you would expect of an Americanized Mexican restaurant. They give you massive portions and the meals come with your standard rice and beans. Very good flavor and always appreciate the bottomless chips and salsa when you dine in. Service is as very rude, when we ordered drinks she asked for our IDs in a very snarky tone and asked "are you ready for food or what?" We are young in our twenties but still no need to act like we are criminals trying to drink underaged. The margarita was very weak and just on ice no option for blended or any drink menu presented. Food took a long time to come out and there were multiple screaming children and families who arrived after us that ate and paid before we got our meals. What a happy find. My husband went here to place a to go order, and he felt like he was at our favorite restaurant in Ventura. While looking at the menu he sampled the Cadillac margarita, Fabiola made it perfectly, again felt like home. He ordered the Flautas for a starter, these were cut into three bite pieces, and were crispy and delicious dipped in the guacamole. I had requested the Chile Verde, which was tender and flavorful, this I will have again. Hubby got the carnitas, and he was so pleased on how yummy it was. Beans and rice were tasty, chips and salsa nice and flavorful, and the tortillas seem to be house made. I am looking forward to going here in the near future to sample more. We have ordered from here multiple times but tonight was the last time for me. Ordered a taco salad that was 90% vegetables, 5% beef, and 5% taco shell. They forgot the sour cream even though the receipt clearly states add sour cream. The ground beef in the "salad" was INCREDIBLY bland. Very disappointed and will not return. read more

Beware!!! Food was only fair. Two days after my visit I was reviewing my online bank statement to realize I was charged twice. Upon calling I was given the run around, a few hours later I was called back. The response was completely confusing, with No apology. The issue is still unresolved. We will Never go back! If you eat there check your online bank charges to make sure you haven't been charged twice, the manager said they have had over five hundred customers complain about this issue, I said you need to use another bank, I asked the name of the bank, she refused to give it to me. Delicious chili verde! Yum! Spicy so beware, but if you like spicy, this dish is for you! My only peeve was they only put a few pieces of meat in my dish, but the flavor made up for it. My friend likes her chimichanga, and my mom the lunch steak fajitas, although they don't come on a sizzling plate like usual. The meat wasn't chewy like how it can sometimes be, it was tender and yummy (I had a bite). Another thing is, the salsa is literally the mildest salsa I've ever had. This was great for the company I was with, but I crave more heat. Nice service and fair prices during lunch. Would come back to try other things. With the closing of my favorite local Mexican place, I have started the journey of finding the next go-to and unfortunately Mexico Cafe will not be the spot. I ordered arroz con pollo, which is one of my favorite dishes of all time and is usually not hard to make well. This one was horrendous. The sauce lacked depth of flavor, as it was overpowered by nothing but chili powder. The chicken was fine, but nothing to write home about. The chips were fresh and good but the salsa was vile. It was nothing but tomato sauce/tomato chunks, and green onions with a dash of spices of some sort. The limited spices, however could not override the flavor of the can the tomatoes came from. My two star review is solely because the portion size was enormous for the cost. The unfortunate part is that it went in the trash and that portion size was wasted. read more

When I was growing up there was no doubt that the Mexico Cafe was my very favorite restaurant, it was a real treat to go there for lunch on Friday with the crew at the office, when they were farther down Memorial Hwy in the small building, they had an awesome waitress named Shari, who knew my order before I sat down. I rarely dine at the Mexico Cafe these days, but I thought I'd try it again, and again I was let down. The prices have gone up, which I am okay with, and the portions have once again shrunk, which was once again a huge letdown. If I compared the size of a crisp taco from the 90's to the crisp taco I had today it would be laughable. The only thing still the same is the flavor of the beef patty, which is the best ever, but the size of everything, including the beef patty, has been literally cut in half, even the taco shell is far smaller. I was just shaking my head the entire time thinking "how can this even be?" The enchilada in the small combination has shrunk as well. The food is excellent though, but for the price there needs to be more of it. Nice that it's still the same family who owns it, but it's merely a shadow of restaurant I remember from 30 years ago. read more

We heard the Cafe has the best Mexican food in the Valley so off we went. It wasn't quite as good as what we get in Tucson but awfully close. My cheese enchilada's cheese wasn't melted enough and the chili relleno was a little overdone. But the mole sauce was 5 star with a depth of flavor. And the beans and salsa with warm chips were great. The restaurant itself was relaxing and our server was superb. So far, this is my favorite Mexican eatery in Skagit Valley. read more
