What a fantastic find! Stopped by for lunch. I order two tacos (asada and pollo) and wife ordered a burrito. Always a good sign when a place is busy. While waiting, did some shopping. Great meat counter. Ended up seeing some nice ribeye steaks button inspection, cut too thin. Then was offered any thickness. Two steaks at 1 1/2". Picked up some Salsa Macha (can't make it right at home). Very friendly staff in grocery, restaurant and butcher counter at a fair price. Limited seating but friendly and comfortable. My hubby and I always stop by here when we go to friend's place at Mt Vernon. Parking lots are available around store. It's a place where there are many people coming and going. There are various items in the store, but it is standard for us to buy meat for BBQ every time. We bought several types of marinated chicken, but they were affordable and delicious. The cashier was crowded, but quick and friendly service. There is also a place where you can easily eat in the store, and it is crowded during lunchtime. Ok so, we stopped here for some tacos because we were Saturday shopping. It is a lovely store with a wonderful meat counter, and various goodies, yay tapatio and limon salt! I tried the quesabirria taco, and wow, it's like Mexican pot roast and tacos blended together in a cheesy masterpiece. There was also fresh onion and some red and green sauce, the green has made my mouth burn, but in the way I like ;) I absolutely recommend this place, and cannot wait to review again when we try something new. Also the service was lovely and quick, (they have fresh flour tortillas on the weekends), and although it was crowded I didn't care. Asada taco. Simple street food, but there's nowhere to hide with simple foods. This was so good. Braised, pulled, and chopped, the meat was wet and flavorful. Good cut, chuck probably, seasoned just enough but can still taste the meat. Lime, onion and cilantro makes it perfect. Good and fresh tortillas. Service was busy, go to the counter to order. They can seat about 20ish. And the seating has fun chairs. It's a tienda, love tiendas because we discover the best South American ingredient finds. Very good, authentic Mexican food here; primarily tacos. They offer hand made tortillas only on the weekends, but when we got there at noon they were all sold out. The restaurant is inside a market/carniceria which has some tasty offerings like bakery items, staples and meat. The taco shop inside specializes in different meats for the tacos (asada, pollo, lengua, etc). The two downsides are the lack of description for some of the menu items like the burritos and a bit of a wait time when ordering and getting your food. But overall a great place to get your Mexican food and staples! read more

Great meat counter and super friendly folks working there all very helpful! I had a bill of groceries for $40 which included 2.5lb pollo marinada and 2.5lb de carne marinada both absolutely wonderful. Being from Texas and buying from carniceria's often this store is right there with them. So happy to have found such a gem located so close to our sons house, they will definitely be back. The fresh salsa's were great, we had verde and roja very tasty and the right levels of heat. The veggies and produce were all fresh and there is also a few tables where you can go in and order food and sit and eat. Highly recommend for some great Mexican / Texmex food and meats. read more

I got a lengua taco and a barbacoa burrito and my only regret is that it was so much food I couldn't eat it all. The taco was standard, but very good. The burrito was huge. It had pork, beans, seasoned rice, and a pleasant surprise, avocados. The filling was flavorful and juicy, wrapped in a chewy yummy tortilla. Came with two sauces, a green and a red, with the red being pretty spicy, and both being delicious. The food came out really hot too! My meal could easily have been two meals. Service was good, though a bit chaotic for me because I didn't know what I was doing. I was also the only person in the place who didn't understand Spanish, which lead to some confusion on my part. If you want to find great I mean really good tacos and food this place here is it. Soooo gooood and cheesey they didn't skimp on the meat or the cheese it was perfect. The restaurant is located in a store so you can also go shopping while you wait every one that worked there was kind and that's always nice. There were some loud kids so I could see how if you wanted a quiet lunch you'd just have to eat in your car. ....and for their food I would definitely do that it was so good. read more

During my current taco bender, I decided to try this place out. I'm a regular customer for the rest of the tienda, usually hitting the carneceria for my proteins and chicharron and the dry goods for hard to find stuff like achiote. If not for any other reason, go there for their chicharron. First off, their prices are very reasonable. With all the meats they sell, I'm not surprised. Their "standard " tacos run about a buck with their others running twice that. I tried the fish tacos and the chicharron tacos. The chicharron were delicious. The pescado? Well, they were good, but were mostly lettuce(instead of csbbage) with some chopped fish and a sauce resembling thousand island. I was hoping for just a single large piece of fish. As determining the number of tacos to order can be very confusing (they're so little, obviously I can eat 10 of them!), here's my scale: 5'3" woman, very athletic, ate a late snack, could eat but not starving: 3 tacos All the same, but has been wondering about what to eat for dinner for the past hour: 4 tacos All the same, but curious and don't care about how stuffed you'll feel: 5 tacos All the same, but either has been challenged to an eating competition or wants to try all of the tacos on the menu: 6+ tacos Now that's out of the way... The taco counter is at the back of a grocery store. You order tacos at the counter (yes, they take credit cards!) and take a seat at one of the several dining tables laid out. The ambiance is functional - you are there to eat and enjoy the food and not do anything else. The taco menu is not vegetarian friendly, and there are a couple of other options that are not tacos, including horchata or tortas. Food is served on paper plates, and there is an awesome array of hot sauces to put on your tacos. And of course, the food is the highlight of this place. I personally loved the shrimp, but my friends sing the praises of the asada and the adovada (which I love, too). Honestly, come here with a friend, order one of each, and split them all. Track your preferences on your phone, come back later, and then order the ones you loved...and then take home extra. Because they're all at a great price and can you really eat too many tacos? So in summary, this is not a 'nice' restaurant. It's functional with a bathroom that is clean (but has a toilet that REALLY needs to be fixed...). This a combination Mexican grocery, butcher, and food counter. I found this 3 years ago, and so far is the closest I've found to my SoCal and Baja experiences. All meat counter items have been fresh and tasty- especially the chorizo. A few times a year I'll do a mixed grill of their adovado pork, chicken, and beef. In winter I'll get the thick cut short ribs for braising. My usual at the taco/burrito/tortas counter are either carnitas/pastor/birra/lingua tacos, or a fish burrito. It is always a good sign when the majority of customers here are Latinos. I like to try new places whenever possible(see my other reviews), but Compadres continues to be my regular. While there is some seating now available inside, we like to take our lunch just south to the small riverside park picnic tables when weather allows. read more

Not too enthused with the dry goods section of the grocery store, but the meat counter and the tacos are AMAZING. My favorite tacos are the carne asada and adovada. I'm usually all about the carnitas, and theirs are really tasty, but they have THE BEST carne asada I've ever had. They have lots of hot sauce to top your tacos with, but I'm not too big on spice. I really enjoy the avocado salsa they offer. On the weekends they offer tamales and home-made tortillas. Do yourself a favor and try this place. Bring cash for tacos. We went for a drive all the way from Lakewood and came across this place and we have since been back about 5 times for not just the prices of the items they sell but for the tacos burritos and all the deliciousness. If anyone from California is familiar with Vallarta Supermarkets - this place is where you'll find a few dishes like the ones they at the mercado.
