Such a shame when a very solid kitchen is marred by mediocre (at best) service.
Metropolis offers better than average small and large plates, although not really Tapas, in a pleasant setting. Given the very few choices of restaurants in the Outer Banks, I'm glad Metropolis is here and continues year after year to deliver interesting, and diverse dishes. With the exception of the Tuna "Tartar" - amazing because it wasn't raw tuna - we enjoyed every one of the dozen or more dishes that Metropolis served.
But the service! Wow, hard to believe the service in a small, kitchen driven restaurant could be so indifferent and inept in handling its customers. Our waitress, as well as the servers that helped her, acted as if we were a nuisance. Think rolled eyes like a teenage girl taking advice from her mom. With a chalk board full of specials, she didn't tell us about one.
We ordered a bottle of sparkling wine, and despite the room being very warm, simply set our bottle of sparkling wine on the table. When I managed to flag her down to ask her to put the still half full bottle in ice, she grunted acknowledgment and left it sit there for another 10 minutes. Finally, when reminded, she snapped up the bottle and took it away. Another 10 minutes later, with empty glasses all around, we asked "what happened to the wine?" She admitted that they didn't HAVE wine buckets so the wine was taken into the kitchen to be cooled. What kind of restaurant with a substantial wine list (in a summer restaurant) doesn't have a wine bucket?
We ordered the charcuterie and cheese platter - which is very, very slight for $16 - and then waited and waited and waited. She finally took our order, although she did so from one end of a long table so we shouted (and laughed and the absurdity) our order so she could hear us. I guess it's too much trouble to walk around the table to take our order.
The food itself arrived entirely randomly. Each of us ordered three dishes but some of us were on our second before others received their first. And while a real tapas restaurant does indeed come fast and furious. There is really nothing about Metropolis that is tapas. At a minimum, the servers should let us know how things work and that the food will arrive for anyone at anytime.
There were too many kooky service issues to mention. But salty service like this is more typical of a Philadelphia diner. I certainly didn't expect it here. And if the chef is the owner - or even knows the owner - he should clean house. For me (and my group of seven) the service dragged an otherwise very good dining experience down to a frustrating and sometimes comical dinner. read more
