On Friday, March 20, 2026 (Check #41, around 11:29 AM EDT), Server Tressa my friend and I stopped in for a late brunch. I frequent this location often, and the service is usually pleasant and the food is great. However, this particular visit was the most unpleasant experience I've ever had. I ordered the Bissell Breakfast, and my friend ordered a flatbread pizza. My meal included a waffle, and I asked the server to add strawberry butter. When my order arrived, I was shocked to see visible mold on the strawberry butter served with my waffle. I immediately brought this to the host's attention, who removed the plate and spoke with our server. Since we were seated near the front bar, I could clearly see the interaction. The server appeared unaware that I could see her, and I watched as she scraped the molded butter off the waffle. She then checked several other containers of strawberry butter, which also appeared to be moldy and were discarded. After finding a better-looking container, she proceeded to place new butter on the same waffle that had previously had mold on it and brought it back to me. I declined the plate and explained that I was not comfortable eating food that had already been in contact with mold. The server responded with an apparent attitude and walked away without addressing my concern. A few minutes later, she returned with what appeared to be the same waffle, now with the strawberry butter smeared or melted on top. Given how quickly it was returned, it did not seem that a fresh plate had been prepared. At that point, I declined the waffle entirely. Overall, this situation was handled very poorly. A friend told us to give this place a try. Good food at fair prices. They were not wrong in their advice. Three of us had breakfast here on a Friday. We got there around 10:15 and were seated right away. After ordering drinks we ordered two bissell breakfasts and two eggs with bacon. The eggs were delivered perfectly cooked over easy. I got the sausage and the others bacon. The hash browns were crispy. The bissell came with two pancakes. Everyone enjoyed their breakfast. I ended up taking my pancakes home to eat the next day. Here is a quote directly from their website, "It's not only our big, bold comfort food that'll bring you to Metro Diner here in the Classic City, it's also the warm welcome you'll receive.". Little did we know, there would be nothing warm about this brunch. My friend and I were in the mood for brunch, and since it was later in the day, we decided to settle on Metro Diner. Our waitress, Olivia H., immediately told us (After we received our drinks-referring to the other waitress in the restaurant), "I fucking hate that bitch". Each time she came to our table, she would say aggressive and hostile things about the other waitress, always referring to her as a "bitch". She repeatedly said, "I'm gonna lay that bitch out, I swear to God". NEVER IN MY LIFE have I been to an establishment that was so blatantly hostile, violent, and unprofessional towards its own coworkers. It is also worth noting that the establishment had two other tables being served inside, but the restaurant was quite empty and not busy. When our waitress would say her alleged threats, she did not lower her voice and she appeared quite comfortable outwardly admitting that she wanted to beat her up. The managing partner, Jonathan Bates (Here is his LinkedIn: Jonathan Bates | LinkedIn ), was always in our line of vision and I believe he had already heard the comments but did nothing about it. My friend informed the manager of the situation at hand; this is what he said: "She said that right now to you guys?". That is all he said. He did not come up to our table and apologize for allowing Olivia H. to get away with her hostile and repeated threats. Jonathan Bates continued to walk around the establishment and refused to acknowledge or make eye contact with us. He showed no support to the other waitress who was less than five feet away who would hear these terrifying threats. There was nothing warm or welcoming from Jonathan Bates, nor did he ask us how our food was. I would expect this behavior from a nineteen-year-old, not a middle-aged grown man. As someone who has worked in the food industry, it is appalling how disregarded we were by him. Afterwards, Olivia H. came up to my friend who complained and apologized; she explicitly said the manager (Jonathan Bates) did not make her apologize to us, and she did not apologize to the waitress who she threatened. She then told my friend who had brought up the threats, "I didn't say I was gonna beat her up and lay her out; I said I wanted to beat her up and lay her out.". I'll let that settle in. I am genuinely concerned for the safety of the waitress who was threatened, and it is evident that Jonathan Bates is racist and that he is complicit with white employees being openly aggressive and racist to non-white employees. As a manager, how do you not care about the safety of your employees? I am also very concerned about the well-being and safety of the harassed waitress. Jonathan Bates was cold and stand-offish to us, paying customers. I was a bit surprised that Mr. Bates did not offer to comp our meals, as we were very uncomfortable having to deal with this situation. If you are a local, I wouldn't recommend working OR eating here. If you happen to be African-American, LatinX (Especially Mexican), a part of the black diaspora, etc, you ESPECIALLY should not work or eat at Metro Diner in Athens. This establishment feels way too comfortable treating non-white people (Employees and Customers) as second-class citizens. The food is okay, but you are better off going to First Watch. I will never come back to Metro Diner, nor will I recommend this racist establishment. If I could give zero stars I would. read more

We thought this may have been a fluke , but we came back some weeks later an we had the same poor service due to being whoa fully under staffed. Don't waste your time going to this restaurant. My friend and I tried to have lunch at this diner and walked in when there were almost no patrons eating. We placed our order and patiently waited for the food to arrive. The waitress brought our drinks and everything seemed fine to this point. You could see the cook from where we were sitting, and he appeared to not really know what he was doing. He had my sandwich prepared and put fries on the plate which I did not order. He dumped the fries in the trash and started over there. My friend ordered a burger with fries, and he put her plate under the heat lamp ready to serve. Then he dumped the fries off her plate. He put onion rings on my plate which I did order, but all the while our food was sitting under the heat lamps and getting dried out. We ate there on a Wednesday evening with a large group. This was our second time there. We had previously eaten breakfast there on a weekday. It was fine. It was of better quality and a much nicer place than Waffle House. I ordered beef tips for my entree and was very disappointed. The beef was tough and very chewy. I won't ever order that again. Salad arrived after main entree, flies on the windows and rock music coming from the kitchen. Teriyaki salmon, mashed potatoes and broccoli were quite good although "Teriyaki" meant squirting salmon after it came off grill. Friday fish special was good, nice and hot but with cold fries. Four of us went to Metro Dinner for a Valentines Day brunch. 1st I went on their website to be added to the wait list (and recieved a confirmation). When we arrived I was told they "never" use that system!! We spent over $80.00 for the four of us, and everyone's food was terrible!! I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant. I mean how can you mess that up...they did!! The egg tasted like powder eggs, they were dry and stone cold,the croissant was not fresh. The sandwich was cold, dry and falling apart. My daughter ordered an omelet, it looked more like scrambled eggs, was also cold and dry. My husband ordered biscuits and sausage gravy. I tasted it, it was bland and cold. I don't remember what my granddaughter ordered, I do remember she didn't finish it. The resturand was crowded & loud. In a time when money is tight for everyone, and you are just trying to create a nice family memory...Metro Diner was an expensive & Epic FAIL!! Will not be back. read more

We went to Metro Diner. We are not a fan of everything, but the club sandwich and fries are great. We always have good service and the staff is always friendly and accommodating. We went there Wednesday night and surprisingly it wasn't very busy. Plenty of staff and folks cooking. We ordered the club as usual and requested no ham, not tomatoes and American in place of the cheddar cheese. My wife cannot stand tomatoes and not a fan of the other two items, but a simple request all the same. It took longer than expected, but when arrived it had tomatoes and cheddar cheese on the sandwich. They did take off the ham. We were going just to pull off the tomatoes, but we really don't want the cheddar and once you start pulling apart the sandwich it falls apart so we sent it back. The waitress was great and said she would have them remake it. Then the manager decided to put her foot in her mouth and come to the table to school us on that she made the sandwich herself and wondered what the problem was. We repeated our request and she reluctantly took it back to remake it. Who knows what they did to the sandwich at this point, but after an extremely long time she returned with a sandwich and fresh fries. I didn't make a stink then, it was at the end of the day, but we were really set back by the lack of customer serve from a manager and with her coming to the table when she should of just remade it and moved on. The restaurant was packed at 11:45am on this Saturday morning, but we were seated right away when we asked to sit outside on the patio which was in the sun so that the 45 degrees felt like 60. Had breakfast with a group of eight senior citizens. Coffee was excellent, proportions acceptable and price fair. My concerns: waited forever to get drink orders and have drinks delivered - place was freezing...I don't know why these places have to set their temp so low plus have on overhead fans and floor fans - the 81 county inspection score was problematic - food came out piecemeal to the eight of us so much that by the time the last was served the others' food was luke warm. It appears they have no plan for such a large group as there were only two other tables occupied at this time...two people at each table. First time visiting the Metro Diner in Athens, Ga. We ordered the 3 egg platter and the shrimp and grits. The food was quite good, however the server was terrible. When my egg platter was brought to the table it was obvious there were only 2 eggs, I asked about the 3rd egg and was told it was probably under the hash browns, showed the server it wasn't and asked to have the bill changed to the 2 egg platter rather than wait for a 3rd egg while my dinner got cold. Cyndi ordered the small size shrimp and grits. When the bill came it still charged for the 3 egg platter and the large shrimp and grits. We asked for a to go container for the shrimp and grits and the server brought us a to go of iced tea, sweetened instead of the unsweetened we had ordered. I asked about the discrepancy on the bill and was told she would take care of it, after waiting 10 minutes and no sign of our server, we left rather frustrated. I understand the difficulties of wait staff and hiring in general but this is not acceptable after we make the choice to spend our hard earned money on an evening out meal... not sure if we will go back at this point. read more
