A few months ago I wrote a review stating that when they changed from Sole to Meta, it was not nearly as good. We dined there last night and they are back to being as good as they were when they were called Sole. We had duck, Sole Veal Chop And the filet of Sole stuffed with crab meat& shrimp. All the dishes were really really good. As an appetizer, we had baked stuffed clams, as good as ever. We won't hesitate to go back, since it one of our favorite restaurants. We had my mother-in-law's 80th birthday in the back room over the holidays. The food was great and the service was exceptional. The party package was well worth it and the family had a great time. My husband and I had dinner here last night. It was my second time here since it changed from Sole and my husband's first time. Every thing was exceptional! The Caesar Salad was hands-down one of the best salads EVER! It was extremely fresh and the Asiago crust was phenomenal! My husband got the Pear Salad with Goat Cheese and he said it was delicious. We ordered a bottle wine which our server recommended and was the right call! For our entrees I got what I usually get here, the Chicken Parmesan Ravioli and my husband got the Chicken Parmesan with Linguini. Both of us throughly enjoyed our entrees. We were too full to order dessert but we did order food for our son to go and my husband ordered a meatball Panini to take home to eat later at home while he watched the games. He said it was amazing. The service was very attentive and the Manager came by our table and was very friendly. Meta is a warm, cozy restaurant and I love the updated look. My family and I came here for my mom's birthday. Service and people are great, everyone is so nice. Food was ehhhhh.....I noticed the majority of their dishes are sweet. I'm all for a sweet and savory menu but not for almost all dishes. Luckily the pasta with white clam sauce wasn't sweet. I've had better, though, it had a taste to it that I just couldn't figure out what it was. I don't think I would go back here again unless they change up the menu. read more

This is my first review ever on Yelp and I wish it was a positive one. I've been going to Sole (now known as Meta) for 12 years. It was my favorite restaurant. I brought my grandma and cousin with us there tonight from Northport. We waited over an hour and a half for our meal. The manager came over and apologized for the delay. When we got our check, they didn't take anything off for the huge inconvenience in fact, we were charged $2.00 extra for ricotta for my son and $2.00 for ricotta for my grandmother. When the waitress came to take the check, my husband explained how we waited over an hour and a half for our meal and on top of that charged $4.00 for ricotta. Our mistake, we thought that they would realize the poor service and comp something, instead they insulted us by removing the ricotta that never should've been in there from the beginning. Unfortunately now I will never return. I understand mistakes, but I have no patience for disregarding error and ignoring the chance to make it right. I'm so disappointed. read more

You wouldn't know it by looking at the exterior, but Sole is a culinary delight. There is a reason there is a wait every night of the week, and there is a reason to accept this wait and hang around for a table: the food here is delicious. Have a drink prepared by one of the friendly bartenders and fantasize about what you might order. Sole truly does have the best Italian food in the area. I would know this because I live around here and have eaten at (almost) all of them. Whenever I go to Sole, I try and have something from their specials menu, but there are a couple of go-to items on their menu. Their braciole is off the charts...I mean absolutely delicious. The first time I had it, I dreamt about it that night. Also, their chicken parm raviolis have been the talk to the town for quite some time and must be their biggest seller. The sauce they lie in is spectacular, but the real treat is inside. The delicious, and I can't emphasize delicious enough, explosion of flavor that comes with each bite will make you want to call your mother and thank her for giving birth to you just so you could eat that dish. But, that being said, I've tried many things here, and it's always a delight. While the food is great, I did have to take a star off for two reasons: 1. The crowd. While they didn't particularly bother me, they were still noticeable and I could see why others might be annoyed. A lot of the people who come here think they are foodies and sommeliers. They are not...in fact, many of them are just the opposite. 2. The wine list. If you're looking for a red on the lighter side, such as a pinot noir, your options are extremely limited. The red wines are mainly heavier, fuller bodied wines (chianti, merlot, cabernet sauvignon). I recall there being a number of chiantis. Also, I enjoy a nice bottle of wine with dinner, and Sole only carries cheaper wines. While this does make them more affordable, it detracts slightly from the fine dining experience the restaurant provides. Lastly, on a side note, I LOVED the server I had last time I was there. Last night I went to dinner for the first time to Sole and boy what a let down! First off they had plenty of open tables in the front of the restaurant but they sat us all the way in the back right in front of the bathroom. Just wanted to note that I was the only Latina there with the exception of the bus boys. Secondly, my boyfriend who is italian wanted to move to another table so I asked the bus boy if he can get the hostess to come so we can request to sit in another table but instead she told the bus boy to do it. Interesting.... Finally, not sure if they changed chefs but the food was AWEFUL!!!! I ordered the Cavatelli pasta dish that came with sausages and the smell and taste was bad. The pasta was hard, beyond al dente. My boyfriend was not impressed at all with his rigatoni pasta dish. Needless to say, I will not be going back to this place even with their $10 coupon given to us for our next visit. Waste of money! read more

It is with great regret that I have to update my review of Sole from 5-stars to 3-stars. A big part of the reason I LOVED sole was that it had one of the most impressive Duck dishes I've ever had. Unfortunately that seems to have been a lucky one-shot. I've now been to Sole five times. The first time I went, I ordered the duck. I always order duck if it's on the menu. The duck was perfect! It was unbelievably succulent, juicy, tasty, and all the other effusive adjectives you can imagine. The second time, I brought my friend as he was a duck lover as well. As I ate it, I knew--it wasn't the same. I asked Kevin what he thought, and he said it was good, but not perfect. Ok, ok, that's fine. Third time, duck was good. This last time around, the duck was just ok. It's a shame; Sole raised my expectations to an unreal standard. I honestly love this place so much that I waited till my five time around to downgrade the rating as opposed to doing so after my second time there. The duck is still likely the best in Oceanside, but I can no longer recommend it to friends nor will I be ordering it anymore. My other issue with Sole is the prices. The prices are city prices, but that's not exactly the decor or the food. The silver and salt/pepper shakers are all standard fare you'd find at your local diner, not a nice restaurant. The duck, I still think is worth the price, but this recent visit my gf had a Veal dish that was just shy of $30 and felt that I had better veal for much less at other restaurants. We dropped $90 (including tip) for the two of us. We left thinking, that wasn't at all close to what we thought an evening like that should cost. It should be noted that although prices are city prices, they also offer specials and coupons. You can get 20% off your check (up to $20) which is a good deal, but comes with so many rules and conditions that it all but disincentivizes you from using it. CASH ONLY, no split checks, no holidays, etc etc. There's like five different restrictions. The one thing I can say that has gone from not so great to better is the parking lot. The parking lot previous was in a state of disrepair. It seems to have been redone and looks beautiful. Sole is a good place, that can sometimes be great. read more

I'd love to know the secret to Sole's popularity. It gets great reviews, good press, and people just seem to love it. It's a Monday night and I'm dining in an almost full restaurant. Nothing is bad, but nothing justifies the popularity. Prices are high, menu is lacking, service is indifferent, and food is fair. Dinner for three with no drinks is about $150. Portion size is good, and although the menu is limited, the food is basically the same as you get at every other local Italian restaurant. WELL some friends of mine and I have a lot to celebrate...engagements, weddings, houses...all sorts of stuff is in the happenings, so we decided to grab some dinner and be merry. I'm diggin this place - its quaint, not too large/not too small, and its not overwhelmingly Italian or cheesy on the decorations. I was able to book our table through openTable, which is a huge plus for me...its sort of like ordering lunch online...I dont know why I like doing it, I just do, so if you have that option, I'm into it. We were a little early and grabbed a drink at the bar while waiting for our friends to arrive - the bar isn't huge, and could potentially get crowded if there were a lot of people in the restaurant, but that wasn't the case. And the bartender had a nice, heavy pour (hello, friend). After we sat down, we got a bunch of appetizers to share:fried calamari (not soggy, points); baked clams (always a winner, not too bready), mussels (already out of the shell, less work for me). All winners - well done. For my meal, I had the shrimp limonchello - which I heard from my friends and other folks going into dinner was their key dish. The risotto was very well made with a nice, sweet sauce and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. The portion was large enough for me to be full (because I was eating everyone elses dinner) and take some home. My ManWich got the veal cutlet salad, and it sort of reminded us of the veal don pep..I'm assuming he liked it, because he didn't share, and there was none left. I do think the winner of the night, though, was the pork chop my friend got - it was huge, and the mash that accompanied it looked outstanding. Also, I wouldn't know, because HE didn't share and ate it all. Dessert...get the little effn tiramisu truffles. Delicious, as was the home made whipped cream - I am SUCH a sucker for homemade whipped cream, its such an easy thing to make and it really makes the difference in a dessert. I dont remember the other desserts, I just know I liked them. oh! everyone that worked here was very friendly, and the service was efficient but they weren't tossing you out the door. Over the past ten years or so I've dined at Sole' at least a couple of dozen times. The first time we went I actually wrote the owner a letter thanking him for offering such consistent, well presented, well prepared food at very competitive prices. Every dish I've had (with the exception of the fried olives) has been first rate. I can, however, understand why the atmosphere might turn some people off as the room can be very noisy when it's busy. In all though, the traditional meals like veal parm are very good, and the duck dinner can't be beat at the price. Very casual, good attentive service, and a particularly good value received. I had my first meal at Sole the other night and I have to admit i was quite disappointed. This is a mediocre restaurant that seems to be passing itself off as something spectacular. How it is managing this is beyond me but they definitely have the locals fooled. I ordered their salmon, and admittedly the presentation was decent. It came with grilled asparagus and sat on a bed of risotto. By all appearances very appetizing. That's about where the positives end. The salmon and risotto were overcooked, the asparagus slightly undercooked. The risotto was quite salty, the vegetables in the risotto were either from a can or freezer burned, it's hard to tell which. My date had the hake, i believe, which was also overcooked and overzealously coated in some sort of pretzel concoction. Overall, very lackluster. I had a really amazing dinner at Sole with some girlfriends a few weeks ago. Lucky for me, one of my friends was close with the staff so we received lots of complimentary dishes! My rigatoni a la vodka was cooked wonderfully and the sauce was slightly different than any other I had tasted. I think they use some sort of Italian champagne or something. All of the portions were huge and every single special sounded delicious...especially the shrimp crusted salmon over risotto. It's really too bad I can't turn down pasta. I rarely order dessert at restaurants but our waitress brought out 4 desserts for us to try! I'm not the biggest fan of cannolis but the "make your own cannoli" plate was so rich and creamy. My favorite dessert by far was the chocolate cake with tiramisu ice cream which came out on a block of ice! The presentation was beautiful and the cake-ice cream combination was perfect. Just a side note...I loved the feeling of Sole. It was easy to see that it was full of regulars, the wait staff knew most people by first names, and it seemed more like a big group of family and friends than a bunch of strangers. read more

I grew up in Oceanside. I've seen Sole for years and years, but I've never been inside. My parents have gone before and raved about it, but I rarely give their opinion credence when it comes to kitchen art. My mom's a great cook, but they rarely - if ever - dine out. I wouldn't say I was surprised by how good Sole was - that would be unfair. I will say that my expectations were exceeded. I knew it would be good, but I didn't know it would be as good as it turned out. I got a great glass of wine, started with the mango crab cake appetizer, and had the duck special with a fruit glaze served over a carmelized onion risotto as my entree. D-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s. I loved every bite I took, the portions were very generous, and I had a meal for the next night too. I love the food (the cast iron skillet of sweet sausage with melted peppers and onions is to die for) and the armosphere in this restaurant and I love the option of having the price fix menu as the prices are a little high. They always offer new specials. It does get packed pretty fast, and they take reservations for parties of 5 or more, so I do recommend to get there early. Now the only reason I gave them 4 stars is their manager, who ruins the place! I planned a birthday party there and have been there for regular dinners, and all of the times that I had to deal with the manager she has been rude and had an attitude. She never smiles and has no customer service skills. She did not accomodate with any of my little requests (e.x. wait for the birthday person at the table, she insisted that everyone should be present in order for us to be sitted, which ruined the whole idea of a surprise). I'm getting angry by just remembering her. It's sad as the restaurant itself is one my favorits on Long Island. read more

My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for many years, back when it use to be called Sole. It is one of my favorite Italian restaurants, even when comparing to places in NYC. When I was younger, I would always get the chicken parmesan ravioli. They're fantastic and unique, I've never seen something like this in any other Italian restaurant. When I started eating meat, I realized that I was totally depriving myself by not ordering the Veal Chop Sole. It's a large portion of veal, on the bone, pounded thin and prepared parmesan style. It's absolutely great, and pretty reasonably priced for what you're ordering. We also really love sharing the fried calamari. After much hype from my coworkers and reading so many positive reviews on yelp, I decided to purchase a groupon for Sole. Since the place has been described as "always busy," I made a reservation for their first seating on a weekday evening, 5:00 pm. We were happy to find that the restaurant was 90% empty. Sole is small, but clean and well appointed. The outside does not reflect the decor inside at all, so we were pleasantly surprised by the tasteful atmosphere in the dining area and small bar area. Before we talk about the food, let me say that the service was excellent, even after I presented the groupon certificate. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and the manager even came to our table to make sure were happy with where were seated (one person in our party of 4 was on crutches). For these reasons, I am sorry to report that the food was underwhelming. We started with a sampling of different bruschettas (3 pcs for $10). The "24 hour tomato" had potential, but was soaked in pesto...and the crab bruschetta tasted more like tuna. Our other appetizer was a small portion of calamari ($12.95) which was very lightly battered and not greasy at all...BUT, there was a hair in it! For entrees, I had Sole's famous "chicken parmigiana ravioli" in a pink cream sauce. The dish was swimming in sauce and the poor drowned ravioli had no detectable trace of chicken at all. I was disappointed to say the least, but I soldiered on, tasting off the plates of my family. Mom had cappellini with shrimp in spicy pomodoro. The shrimp were huge, cleaned and cooked perfectly. The sauce didn't taste like true pomodoro, but overall I think this dish was the best at our table. My brother had the braciole, which was very salty and unappealingly in its presentation (looked like two logs of...) and accompanied by mashed potatoes with so much pesto mixed in that they were literally green. The dish wasn't awful, but like the ravioli, I can't understand why everyone raves about it. BF wasn't in the mood for pasta or anything too saucy, so he had the chicken scarapiello. The presentation of this dish was lovely, but the taste also failed to impress. The chicken sat on a bed of diced sausage and tiny roasted potato cubes with vegetables, all smothered in a balsamic reduction that didn't allow the flavor of the roasted veggies and potatoes to shine through. After the main course, we were too crushed to order dessert. So, we settled the check and went elsewhere. Overall, Sole is a quaint neighborhood restaurant operated by nice people. But it feels like the chef is overreaching, aspiring to create "haute cuisine" but falling seriously short. My coworkers will be disappointed to hear my take on Sole, but maybe Long Islanders are more easily impressed with mediocre Italian food because they don't venture into "the city" to eat the real deal? read more

We went to Sole after buying a $25 for $50 deal off Groupon. The establishment has been there for 13 years and the place at 5:30 already had several tables filled. When we left at around 7, most of the first room was seated with more people coming through the door on a TUESDAY. (FYI -- They do take reservation now. I heard they used to do only walk-in and the wait turned people off. I did make the reservation at 5:30 and highly recommend for any time after 6). Our server was friendly and gave us plenty of time to go through the menu. But, once we ordered our meal, it took about 25+ minutes to get the appetizer (Fried Calamari). Really, 25+ minutes?? The server came to us at 20 minute mark and apologized for the delay (and brought another basket of bread). Calamari was lightly fried, accompanied by basil aioli and marinara sauce. Perfectly fried, however, the wait could have been shorter! Entree came soon after. Husband got Chicken Scarpariello -- Braised chicken over sausage, potatoes, peppers and onions. His chicken was cooked perfectly. I ordered Linguini with clams and shrimps. Again, well-done with refreshing basil...The portions were in good size, enough for leftovers! Sole is a restaurant that is not situated in an area where you would find other restaurants. The food is consistently delicious and presented beautifully. My staple dish is the shrimp limincello but every other dish we have gotten has always been great. Their Caesar salad is served in a fried cheese bowl. They have very nice selection of desserts. My parents loved this place since the day it opened and changed the face of mediocre culinary destinations in my hometown of Oceanside, NY. It's quite good. They can fully accommodate gluten free, including pasta, which is awesome (especially for a place in the suburbs). The cuisine is Italian, but you can find all types of dishes on the menu from shellfish to chicken parm to whole roasted chicken to pasta and great grilled options as well. My dad usually gets the chicken parmesan, which always looks absolutely delicious. My mom usually gets some type of special /fish entree...always comes with tons of veggies and side dishes to make it a really nice portion. I've had gluten free pasta dishes (a la vodka) and most recently tried their version of shrimp scampi with a limoncello sauce/reduction. It came with a basil risotto that was great, plus garlic-y spinach. Deelish. Hint - get there early...especially on the weekend. The place will be PACKED with people waiting for a table as of 7pm and they don't take reservations unless you're a huge party. We usually get there by 6 and we're okay. If you get there at 5 (yes, for all you old biddy-wanna-be's), and do the early bird special, you'll beat the crowd and get a great restaurant week-type deal for not a lot of money. read more

I came here a few times when I was younger and LOVED the food.. the last time I went I was very disappointed.. I ordered eggplant parm because I usually do when I go for Italian and I hated the way it tasted. After trying it and not liking it, I asked if there was provolone in it and there was which I'm not a fan because it can be overwhelming.. Even after taking off ALL the cheese it still tasted off! The actual eggplant tasted old or funky.. The fried calamari wasn't good either, it had an extra weird crunch to it that almost tasted like the squid had a shell on it before they fried it (gross) My boyfriend ordered roasted chicken, he got his food over 10 mins after us and it was under cooked (bloody inside) and had to be sent back which took over 15 mins Sadly after this experience I will not be returning, there are plenty of other good quality and cheaper Italian restaurants I can go to 2 stars because of the baileys dessert with ice cream was decent (but really how could you not mess up booze chocolate and ice cream ) read more

Sole is a small place. The tables are packed in together so you can hear the next tables conversation. Other than that, this place makes some great food. Apps: Mussels taken out of the shell for you, cooked in a red garlic sauce and put into a wine glass, were very good. Veal Meatballs in a demi glaze were also good. I would go with mussels over the meatballs. I had the pork chop sole, which was fried pounded out thin and very tasty. I would get this again without a problem. Big fans of this place. We go here often ever since we first found it in March 2015. We got a coupon for 20% off and each time we come we get another coupon. Nana's Ragu is a staple dish for my husband. Two softball size meatballs, one sweet and one hot sausage with Rigatoni in red sauce with a dollop of ricotta cheese in the middle and a nice piece of fresh basil. Perfection. The meatball appetizers are a must try. We get them every time. They give you three small meatballs and there are three different sauce choices. So each time we get a different kind. All of them are amazing! I kid you not! The pear and goat cheese salad is enough to share, also very good. The prices for a bottle of wine are really great $25! They give you basil pesto and tomato bruschetta at the table with soft and crispy breads. I've tried the Swordfish special, Porkchops, Pork Osso Bucco, Rigatoni alavodka with Shrimp, Salmon with Risotto, Eggplant Parmesan. All very good! Haven't had a bad meal here and it's very consistent. Been here with just two people and been here with a group. Either way we get the same great service and delicious tasting food. You can only reserve a table if you are 5 or more. Wait is worth it if you are there on the weekend. They also have a great groupon out. Love this place. Go there!!!! We were seated without a reservation. 15 minutes before we left, it was getting busy in the restaurant so I suggest making a reservation after 7. We ordered a bottle of wine and two dishes, the ravioli for my guy and Osso Bucco for me. We were both stuffed towards the end of our meals. Very hearty dishes - but what can you expect from delicious Italian restaurant? Overall we had a great time. From the outside, this place doesn't look too great. A really cheesy mural with no windows doesn't give it the most inviting appearance, but on the inside it's fine. Delicious wine and food! Just returned from a small birthday celebration we had at Meta. With my "pod" of 5 couples all weeks post vaccination we were comfortable getting together. Planned the party with the help of Roberto, the manager who was a pleasure to deal with. He provided everything we agreed to and surprised us with much more. The food, drinks, service and ambiance could not have been better. We went early and had reserved the back room. Every guest loved every part of their meal. Our waiter, Adam was helpful, courteous, efficient and giving and remembered everyone's drinks even from previous times at the restaurant. The eggplant meatballs were good and so were the rice balls (although I wish the portions were bigger.) I enjoyed the zucchini vegetable dish with great flavor and great chunks of garlic. They also offer some good choices on the kids menu along worth a free sundae. read more

I used to look forward going to this restaurant when it was Sole...Since it was re-done and the name was changed to Meta the owners must think they are in Manhattan...The portions got smaller and if you ask them to change something they tell you no...I ordered a special salad that came with feta cheese I wanted goat cheese and the waitress came back to me and said the chef said no and he yelled at her for ordering it...There is no flexibility...Sole made the customer happy with subsitutions...My friend ordered shrimp limoncello as always and the shrimps were much smaller than before...I dont think I will be returning to this restaurant...As they say "If it isnt broken, why fix it? read more
